today we're here with the Russell
mechanic today we're going to do a
pretty quick little diagnosis we've got
the good old trusty Magnum in here I
know you guys haven't seen this one a
bunch but this is the pretty much daily
driver car of the Rust Belt for uh the
better part of the last three or four
months it's pretty awesome 06 Hemi car
and we got a bunch of cool things coming
down on this one however we are just
doing a quick little diagnosis today I
had the check engine light come on I
believe we have an O2 sensor code and I
do have a new scan tool to test out with
this today so we're going to talk about
the O2 sensor how to do a proper
diagnosis of these and how this launch
scan tool works

so first off for those of you who did
not know if you have these LX based
platform cars which is the Magnum
charger 300 as well as a couple of other
Dodge products we can do a quick check
for DTC codes in the PCM how do you do
that
we have three key Cycles we start in the
on position off on off on off on
and then we look over here in the
cluster and we can see our codes are
popping up
p0158 was the code that we had pop up
and it says done when they're done with
them so we know we have a 158 code which
is a downstream O2 sensor
so our scan tool that we're going to be
looking into today is this launch and
this is the x431 series and this is the
CRP
931e I believe is the model number of
this one I just picked this up from for
testing just a couple of weeks ago so uh
just here to show you guys exactly how
this one's working along with the O2
sensor code that we have
the first thing I want to do hook the
vehicle up to the scan tool and it's
going to do an automatic Auto detect Vin
scan as soon as the vehicle hooks up now
this one doesn't take that long as you
guys can see uh ding hits right there
2006 Dodge Magnum and I don't want to do
a whole vehicle system scan if you hit
the OK button it'll automatically do
that one I want to go into our
Diagnostics and you can see this covers
a crap load of different Diagnostics and
everything for all different brands
makes models and everything
bunch of stuff that nobody is ever going
to see but we're going to get up here to
our
Dodge section diagnosed for Dodge and
we'll hit OK so it's going to
process
16 pin Auto search the VIN
and it's already found the VIN number
Hemi v806 Magnum okay and we want to go
into our system selection select our
powertrain control module
and read our fault code
and you can see we have a
pier015802 sensor 2 2 circuit high so
for those of you who not know the
exhaust sensors on these cars do a very
specific function they will read the
oxygen content coming out of the exhaust
from the engine that tells the computer
pretty much how much fuel and how much
oxygen the engine is using and how
efficiently it is burning I uses a pump
style sensor Willer it will take a
reference voltage from the outside
available air as well as take a sample
from the oxygen gas coming out of the
engine it will turn that into a voltage
in which the PCM will be able to read
now the two Upstream O2 sensors on these
cars will read the oxygen content coming
out of the engine and that's how it
knows how much fuel to put back into it
the downstream ones which is the ones
that we have an issue with today on this
one they're after the catalytic
converters and they just monitor how
pretty much how efficiently the
catalytic converters are working it will
it should see a higher oxygen content
after the cattle a converter than before
the catalytic converter so it knows that
the cats are efficiently working so what
we're going to do we're going to go back
into the scan tool here and we're going
to look at how you're supposed to read
the different sensor voltages for oxygen
sensors
okay so for our oxygen sensors we want
to get a couple of different readings
here and this scan tool I'm pretty sure
it does a pretty decent job at doing
just so so we're going to want to read
our data stream and we're going to look
at a couple of different things here we
want to see our downstream O2 sensors
just to see the differences in voltages
on these so we're going to select our
one two that's our bank one which is the
driver's side on this specific car and
our tutu which is the passenger side one
so
we'll hit OK and it will start to read
these now this is kind of suspicious
right here these sensors they have what
they call a reference voltage when they
start reading things and the reference
voltage on these is 5 volts so anytime I
see a direct
see this voltage of straight 5 volts
that tells me it may have something
that's shorted to reference voltage it
may be internal to the sensor it may be
in the wiring but normally it's not
supposed to read exactly 5 volts we're
supposed to be just underneath so that's
a little bit suspicious there and that's
the one we have our code on also so
we're going to want to combine these two
and we are going to go ahead and graph
them and start up the car
now right away we're going to see this
thing slowly
start to work now the cool thing about
O2 sensors they go through a heat phase
in which it's kind of a warm-up phase
for because oxygen sensor so they do
have a heater internal to them a heater
does have the possibility of failing but
that's a different code that would set
all together so the vehicle once it goes
through this heating phase this is
called uh open loop so open loop is
we'll just say a different coding
variation of how the PCM makes the
engine run while it's still cold after
it goes uh through its whole little
warm-up phase kind of like an older
engine would hit its choke then we go
into what is called closed loop and we
start to see this difference here in the
oxygen sensors so the cool thing about
oxygen sensors like I said earlier is
they do take a reference voltage and a
reference from the amount of air that's
in and out of the exhaust system now the
PCM will take this voltage and it will
ramp it up and down and you will see
what we call a switching in the O2
sensors on a downstream sensor we're
going to see right around two and a half
two three and a half volts it should
switch up and down and it should go
pretty evenly once we start to see
everything going to a more even closed
loop cycle
now you can see right here in our green
we have our uh Bank One downstream O2
sensor and number two uh is our uh
passenger side one now you see the green
one we've got a pretty even up down up
down up down and it is switching very
evenly where the blue one you can see we
have kind of a flat mark it'll go up
higher come down it's not so even so and
you can see here is another section
where it's kind of getting stuck so it
is not switching nearly as fast as the
other side O2 sensor now obviously an
engine is not going to run perfectly
exact from side to side but these things
should be pretty even and you should see
them switch nice and evenly again you
can see here where the green is going up
but now up and down and we have a flat
line on our blue
O2 sensor which is the passenger side
one so that tells me right there that
the O2 sensor for our Downstream
passenger side isn't switching fast
enough and based on that and the fact
that we saw five volts uh right off the
bat at a full reference voltage I think
we've pretty much narrowed it down to
needing to replace our downstream O2
sensor on the passenger side
now this scan tool is something that
intrigues you it is a pretty awesome
scan tool especially for the amount that
these things cost scan tools anymore are
upwards of thousands of dollars to be
able to get a good bi-directional scan
tool and when launched approached me and
said hey we've got a really good economy
bi-directional scan tool I'm like really
is it bi-directional or does it just do
some sensor readings and everything they
said no it really does system tests and
in Chrysler will we have our actuation
test and our special functions if you go
into this one we can do everything from
a forced monitor test that is our EVAP
system where it will force the EVAP
system to run to check for any large or
medium EV athletes it will also do a
relearn of an electronic throttle body
works great on this one as well as a cam
crank relearn in case we replace any of
the cam or crank sensors it will do a
full reset of each one of the ecu's
clear out the variable line pressure
counter so the transmission as well as
all of your long-term and short-term
adaptives for the PCM we can do the
normal
then check
we can see our valid VIN number and that
is our valid VIN number on this one
and if it wasn't we could rewrite it and
we don't really want to do that one so
we're going to cancel out of that again
like I said I was really skeptical on
whether this was a bi-directional tool
and it really is for what this thing
costs which is like right around 465
bucks I was very surprised at what it
could do special functions
do our trans uh adaptive memory reset so
it'll do a quick learn for these store
the Adaptive so we don't clear them all
out that's pretty awesome for the
transmission functions like I said this
is pretty awesome and it'll do all the
normal things and all the normal resets
that would be for you know like
resetting your oil change light
something else that I thought it was
really cool to do was
um
sorry I've backed out a little bit too
far I want to go in here and look at
some of our OBD2 monitors so we're going
to our system selection our PCM
and art OBD2 monitors
so normally in the drb as well as the
the y-tech scan tools for these vehicles
that would be under OBD2 functions and
that's something that most scaffolds do
not read this one does quite nicely and
we will scroll down here you can see all
the different OBD2 monitors that it has
available and the one that most people
really like to use is which cylinder is
misfiring it does the active counting of
your rev Monitor and each individual
cylinder
monitors those for your misfire so you
can watch your live misfire counters on
this scan tool pretty awesome
functionality for a scan tool that's
less than five hundred dollars
now if the launched crp919e is something

that's where it's at I'm not sure if
they're going to throw any discounts in
but if they do then I'll just kind of
put them right here I don't know we'll
see how uh what they offer for that one
overall I would say it is a really good
uh buy it does some really nice
bi-directional functions for the amount
that it is especially being under 500
bucks for a guy who does a lot of
at-home work for some customers here and
there you need something more than just
a little code reader and something that
can do minimal resets we need some
bi-directional functions to be able to
do some of the system tests that we
really need for fixing these cars I
would definitely recommend at least
checking that scan tool out and on these
Hemi cars it is extremely easy to do
these O2 sensors we can see it is right
here hanging out just below the
catalytic converter on the passenger
side of the car bank one is driver's
side Bank two is passenger side the one
one would be pre-cat the one two would
be post cat same thing for two one and
two two the code was for the 2-2 so
we're going to grab our 7 8 wrench and
get those ones swapped out real quick
and easy one other just little tidbit of
advice just being that I've worked for
Mopar for the last like 14 years well
I'm not right now but I used to I do
know that these Chrysler products are
very picky on the O2 sensors that get
put into them and the ones that they do
not like more than anything are Bosch O2
sensors especially the extra wide ones
those just for some reason they don't
work they don't last very well with any
of these the variation range of the
voltages that they pick up just don't
work so I usually recommend sticking
with Mopar or ntk which is pretty much a
rebranding of what Mopar uses for the O2
sensors so that's the one I'm using
today so I went ahead and cleared out
all the codes and restarted our graph
restarted the car so we can see how much
better these things are going to be
switching with each other
I just started the car up so it is still
an open loop and we'll wait for it to go
into closed loop here and here we've
started to go into closed loop and we're
starting to see them switch here more
regularly of each other now I am
noticing that this blue line is a little
bit more jagged
than what we were before so it is
switching uh very quickly and crispy on
this uh new wave level here and shoot
that might be to where it's doing so
awesome
I might need to go ahead and change out
the O2 sensor on the other side because
it is not switching nearly as fast as
this side
you can see it switching way better than
it was before where it was stuck and now
I'm actually starting to see my other
side the Bank One Sensor 2 not switch
very quick at all it's kind of waving
but it is not going up and down very
much at all
but it looks like we did fix our 2202
sensor and verifying that it is
switching way better than it was before
like I said just a quick little video
showing you what I was looking at on
this vehicle when I'm coming into some
of the O2 sensor issues when looking at
some of these Chryslers as well as some
inside Peaks to the launch
