Video summary

The video introduces "Captivating California," a comprehensive educational study designed to explore the people, places, and history of the Golden State. Hosted by Jessica from Wild Oak Way, the program is structured around twelve distinct lessons that cover a wide range of topics, beginning with an overview of California's geography and climate before progressing through its flora and fauna, indigenous peoples, and various historical eras including Spanish exploration, Mexican rule, the Gold Rush, and the path to statehood. The curriculum also extends into modern times, examining the state's government, economy, landmarks, and current cultural innovations, ensuring a complete narrative arc from pre-history to the present day. Each lesson within the study follows a consistent and engaging format that combines reading passages with interactive elements to reinforce learning. Students are presented with text about specific topics followed by discussion questions, writing prompts, hands-on activities, and ideas for field trips. To make the experience more dynamic, the materials include coloring pages for creative expression, true-or-false comprehension checks based on the readings, and a variety of supplemental resources such as books, games, and a dedicated YouTube playlist. These additional tools are optional but intended to enrich the learning process without being mandatory, allowing families to tailor the study to their specific needs and interests. Beyond the core lessons, the resource pack offers extensive supplementary materials in the back of the workbook to encourage deeper research and creativity after the main curriculum is completed. Children can engage in projects such as creating fact sheets, writing biographies of famous Californians, or conducting animal research papers on local wildlife. The study also includes a fill-in-the-blank timeline for tracking historical moments and a dedicated log for recording field trip experiences, fostering a habit of continuous exploration. These activities are designed to help students synthesize the information they have learned while developing independent research skills. To make history fun and memorable, the video highlights several games included in the study that cover different aspects of California's heritage. These interactive elements include a timeline matching game where users can play memory-style or create a life-size version on the floor, an animal matching game featuring descriptions of popular local species, and a Jeopardy-style quiz to test knowledge. Additionally, there is a board game called "Journey Through California First People," which involves rolling dice, answering questions about different tribes, and collecting tokens to win, providing a playful way for families to review the material while bonding over shared learning experiences.

[music] >> Hey everybody, welcome to the Wild Oak Way. I'm Jessica. Today's video is going to be a look inside one of our brand new state studies, Captivating California, which is a study of the Golden State's people, places, and past. So, included in Captivating California, when we look inside, we're going to start with the introduction. This is just going to kind of explain what the study is and what's included in it. Then we also have some unit study resources. These are all supplemental. None of this is required, but it is books, games, and then even a YouTube playlist that would make a great addition to the study. But again, supplemental not required because everything that is required is already included in the unit study itself. And then in Captivating California includes 12 lessons. Each lesson is going to be set up very very similar. So, there is a reading passage. So, for example, you can see here we're going to start off with the lesson about California's geography and climate. Here is the reading passage and then here are some discussion questions based off of that reading passage. When we also have some writing prompts, some hands-on activities, and field trip ideas. There is a coloring page. Now, I like to have Emily do the coloring page while I am reading that lesson aloud. That's just my personal preference. Your child can do the coloring page at any point in time. And then there is a comprehension page from the reading. So, this is true and false. So, they're just going to mark whether these statements are true or false. And then like I said, every lesson kind of follows that same structure. So, we have California's flora and fauna. California's first people. >> California's explorers, Spanish California, becoming Mexican California, the Gold Rush and westward expansion, path to statehood, California in the 20th century, California's government and economy, landmark and attractions, and California today, people, cultures, and innovations. So, that is the last of the 12 lessons. And then in the back, we also have additional workbook type of pages that your kids can do. So, after they've finished the 12 lessons, they can do a page about California facts. They can pick a famous Californian and do a biography. They can pick a different animal and do an animal research paper. You can have them do this for either their favorite field trip or every field trip that you go on, and there is a California field trip log included. The timeline of California history, you can have them fill this out at the end or as you guys are actually doing the study, have them fill in historical moments. >> [clears throat] >> There is a timeline matching game. This is the directions for it. I'll show that to you in a moment. An animal matching game, again directions. I'll show that to you in a moment. And then there are answer keys to the comprehension pages. And no Wild Duck Way study would be complete without some sort of game and this one has a couple of different options. So we talked about that timeline matching. So here we have different years and some major events that happened. There are a few different ways you can use this. You can play it like memory and flip them over and match the year to the event. You could use them to do like a life-size um timeline and lay them out on the ground. There are many different things you can do with them. That's all listed in the study itself. Then we also have animal matching. So we have popular animals from California and descriptions. Again, you can just have them match them by reading them. You could play it like memory and flip them over to find matches. Multiple different game plays there. We have a California Jeopardy. So we have the questions or answers in this case, the answers or questions and an answer key where they would write it down. And then we have a board game which is Journey Through California First People. So you would just roll the dice, move along the board, answer a different tribe question unless you land on a space that has an event that happens and be the first one to collect all of the different tokens to win that game.
