I came across I wonder if I can share this. I came across a photo that uh that tortured me when I looked at it and it was AI food. And I'll see if I can share this with you before I go. >> Now, are these people trying to pass it off as if it's real, not acknowledging it, or are these people intentionally sharing? >> So, so the articles that I've read are about like, wow, there are a lot of restaurants that are creating their menus and and whatever with AI generated food, >> and why does it all look the same? Why does the food all look the same? What I'm about to show you does not look the same. It's just absolutely terrifying. >> Oh my gosh. It looks like a honeycomb. Yeah. >> Um Yeah. So, what what is the name of the the fear of holes? Tripop trypophobia, I think, is what it is. >> Is that what it Yeah. I don't remember that. >> And I look at this and I've never understood trypophobia for myself, but I look at this and I've had literal nightmares after seeing this. >> Trypophobes are not going to eat at that place. >> Ah, yeah. Uh, and you know, and I and I wonder like, okay, this is on the internet. Did someone like fake this to be like, haha, check out this restaurant? >> Is this an AI generated picture of a sign with an AI generated picture on it? >> But I do know that out in the out in the real world, I have spotted menus that are AI, you know, the food is clearly >> kind of tell. Yeah. >> Yeah. It's got that that glossy. It's kind of rounded and the meltiness is a little too melty and it's just Don't do that. Let's get into the mailbag then once Jason is by Bye Jason. Uh Come writes regarding our DTNS live uh debate from last week. I enjoyed the Thursday discussion on whether you own your game or not. The theme was what does the future of video games look like without discs? That future is already happening with movies and I was waiting for someone to bring it up. I could have sworn I brought that up at one point. But half the time I can't keep track of what I said in the pre-show versus what I said during the show, so maybe I didn't. Uh, anyway, yes, good point. Uh, Ky says, "If you have a DVD or Blu-ray disc and a compatible player, you can always watch the movie. If a movie is streaming only, its availability can change at any time. Even if you purchased the digital version, you may lose access in some cases. The advantage of owning a movie disc is even clearer than it is for video games. Still streaming eventually won because of its convenience. I think the simple reason there was no big protest from the movie disc collectors is that no major distributor ever declared we will stop releasing movies on discs and they still haven't. Yeah, they never declared that uh because they do make enough money selling those. They don't release every movie on disc though. That that is a thing, right? Uh, so they just kind of ramped it down but realized and I think maybe that that points to the difference is that with games you you don't have people saying I will buy only the best games on disc because I'm a collector of them. You do have you do have collectors of video games but it's just not quite the same like I am collecting the best movies. I am and maybe there are some people out there but it's not as widespread to be like I am only collecting the most awardwinning bestest games. Uh and maybe that will develop and then they'll go back to wanting to put them on disc because of that. Uh I also don't think you get a fidelity difference uh the way you do with Blu-ray. There there's a sincere debate over whether watching a movie on Blu-ray is a better experience sound and video-wise than watching it on streaming because of the compression. Whereas digital downloads uh of games are never no one streaming a game, sure, but no one ever talks about the digital download of a game being inferior in quality because it's the same bits. Uh, and arguably, you know, that should be true of movies, but it doesn't seem to be. So, yeah, it's an interesting point and a good good one to make. Thank you, Ky, for that. Scott wrote, "Just a quick comment about the owning games." Around 58 minutes in, Rob noted that he just needs his controller and can then stream his games wherever he is. Xbox must have been listening because shortly after that, I got a notice that they're going to be restricting the number of hours you can stream games until they announce some new hourly rate plan. We made brief reference to that. Uh you may have heard me mention that to Trish. Uh but yeah, uh that that news broke right before the show. Uh Scott says, "I know they've been planning this. It's just the timing." Also, an ongoing extra subscription for streaming changes the value proposition of owning your hardware versus the convenience of playing uh anywhere, wherever. Yeah, I do think a lot of the debate over this is about but I do it this way now, you know, and I like it so don't change it. That that's one of the prime motivations for human behavior is like, but I already do it this way. Uh so I, you know, people just don't like to have to change. I don't I don't think anybody does. Uh John Murray III said, "If part of the switch to digital means I only have to buy a game once and can play it on any platform, I think the shift might be easier. Hopefully something gives in the Switch." Yeah. I think Rob was trying to make that point of like a lot of the disadvantages to to digital are because of policy choices. They wouldn't have to be that way. And a lot of the advantages uh of disk wouldn't have to be that way either. You you can lock up discs with DRM. Uh you can do all the same abuses to discs that you can do to digital. And that's when I asked that question of uh do you think one format lends itself more to advantages or disadvantages than the other? Or is it just that we're in the habit of putting these these locks in there? Uh, and I think Good Old Games is doing the Lord's work out out there showing like, hey, you can have a digital store that doesn't lock up your game and then you can keep it and you can back it up and you can make legitimate copies of it for yourself. Um, so I I think they're showing like, yeah, digital doesn't have to have all of those disadvantages of ownership uh that discs do. Um, so you know whether does that mean that the uh the game companies are are going to you know follow in their footsteps? Probably not. But at least it's it's something we can point to and say you don't have to do it that way. Uh clearly there is a working business model that doesn't do it that way. Also I think um you know that that if they were to keep discs going they would get more abusive about what's on them uh and putting less and less on them, requiring you to do more downloading and all of that. Uh, so it's not like the discs force them to behave well. It's it's just kind of inertia. Mike wrote, "Good article. There are a series of podcasts on the Economist Network covering this in detail a month or two ago that were very good. They are sadly behind a payw wall." Uh, he is responding to Rogers column technofudalism explained, pushing back against the buildout of data centers around the US. Uh, and so yeah, if you want uh Roger's take on the whole data center thing, check out Roger's two cents, uh, he writes the the column uh about twice a month usually on average. Uh, and you can find it at patreon.comdtns. Thank you, Mike. Uh, Gabrielle said, "Hey, I hope you are doing well and congrats on the continued success of the show. I wanted to point out a potential issue I noticed with the podcast feeds." Oh, wait. Did I already talk about this? Um, he found a a couple of recent episodes with Dr. Nikki interviewing uh people didn't show up in his Patreon feed on time. And I think I explained this maybe on the editor's desk. Maybe I didn't explain it on mailbag, but if I did on mailbag, I apologize for repeating myself. Um, we had a perk where on Patreon you could get uh an episode as soon as it was done publishing and then we would go uh back in and publish it for everyone else. But that caused problems. People who were on that level didn't realize they had got the episode early. Other people were getting the episode, but the podcaster was like, "Well, this was published four days ago, so we're going to stick it further down in your queue." and then they didn't realize they got the issue. So, we're not doing that anymore. Uh we're not we're not uh we're not going to uh have that perk until such time as we can make it work better. Uh so anyway, uh you shouldn't see missing episodes. Uh for example, we had a uh an episode uh this weekend uh where Dr. Nikki and I were talking about why FDA recalls seem like they are more frequent this year in the United States. And the fact is they're not particularly more frequent, but there are more serious ones. And so that's getting more news. And then once you start getting news about one thing, it starts a it's a beter minehoff effect where you start seeing them and then people start reporting more of them. So yeah, uh that that should have been in your feed uh this weekend without delay. And then Seth had so much fun. [laughter] Uh, Seth from Philly had so much fun on doing the voicemail last week that he sent another one. So, let's listen in. I actually have not listened to this. That is that dangerous? And they yell DJ spin that And then there's a random songs plays and they start singing it and the whole stadium sings it and >> people get in arguments about whether the town that got their favorite song deserved it when they wanted it in their town and you know it's kind of like the Taylor the Taylor thing where she would do, you know, a section of Yeah. Yeah. She had two songs every night that rotated and she didn't want to play the same song more than once during a leg. Um, so my my daughter was tracking them all, making sure, you know, she'd had like a little checklist of songs she wanted to see live and if they she one of the songs left played, like she was in a bad mood that whole next day because the song she wanted got marked off her list. >> So, >> um, but one of the one of the she had like three songs left on her list that she really wanted to see live. And when when we went to Toronto, one of the songs that Taylor did was one of the three songs on our list. So, >> well, and that's the thing. When you only do two or three songs that are different every night, like the chances with with discoraphies as big as theirs, right? Um but the process is different. The timelines are different. >> Yeah. >> The focus is different. So it'll take us a little bit to fully flesh it out and iron it out and stuff like that. So we we'll get it figured out and then we'll have time for another podcast. >> Indeed. >> No, Tom. We're not going to do an Indeed podcast. Let's do a podcast about freelance work on Indeed. I Well, we just did an FDA thing. I'm not sure if daily food headlines would be like if you kept it inclusive, wouldn't you just be talking about poop lettuce all the time? >> Yeah. Uh recently you might have been sure >> daily fooled headlines. Bioel's like but no dedicated podcast AI. >> True. True. >> Maybe daily food podcast would just be what the host ate that day. >> What if you just created like podcast GPT? >> You mean like notebook LM? You can create specific LLMs like build it around a subject or whatever. >> Mhm. >> And then just have that as as what it is. It just takes different like take creates podcasts. >> So he wants daily bacon headlines. >> Uh yeah. So you you want to replace us is what you're >> That's got to be a great idea, right? >> I am not too worried about that sort of thing because I feel like that's a different thing. I think people value the human-made aspect of shows uh and and want it to be made by humans and in most cases. Um but but yeah, I think there will be a place for like I just want an update that's read to me. I don't need it to have a human touch. I just want the information. I think that I think there'll be a place for that, but I don't think it'll replace these kinds of podcasts that are done by people. I I mean I'm going to make an argument that that's just an updated version of having an RSS reader on your phone like a little reader app on your phone. >> Yeah. Yeah. It could go longer and then everything will be for not. Um but uh for now uh they the idea is that they will end their announcement at 11:00.
