Lanterns Episode 3 Recap | Bernadette Is The WORST Wife & Mother In The COSMOS!!! | HBO Max
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
In the third episode titled "Outcast," John Stewart is chosen as the new Green Lantern following a misunderstanding about Hal Jordan's status, sparking significant online debate regarding the show's focus on race and equality. The hosts defend these themes by emphasizing that John Stewart's comic book origins have always centered on racial identity, arguing that ignoring such issues reflects a lack of intelligence rather than valid criticism. While the episode is praised for its execution, it faces some critique for its non-linear storytelling structure, which delays revealing John's origin story until this installment instead of placing it earlier in the series.
The narrative heavily features the hosts' strong dislike for John's mother, Bernadette, and Hal Jordan initially, citing Bernadette's behavior as that of an unfaithful wife and neglectful mother who prioritizes her newborn over her husband and son. Specific grievances include her refusal to believe John despite proof of his powers on the news, her dismissal of his alien visitors, and her attempt to kick him off the ring; similarly, Hal is condemned for dishonorably discharging John after a nine-month mission in Russia where John survived on minimal resources only for Hal to intervene and ruin John's record. Additionally, favoritism toward John during a birthday scene, where he receives a Green Lantern suit while his siblings are ignored, leads to sibling resentment, though Bernadette eventually redeems herself by encouraging John to choose himself and supporting his artistic dreams.
The discussion also delves into the unauthorized use of John's ring on Earth, debating whether his reconnaissance mission justifies the action or if it constitutes overstepping jurisdiction. Hal Jordan's hostile reaction upon returning home is interpreted as a standard "tough love" training tactic common in comics, although one host speculates it might be a misdirect to set up a future conflict where John must defeat Hal after he turns yellow. The hosts express disagreement on whether Hal will succumb to Parallax or become a Yellow Lantern, noting theories that Parallax could be an evil alien or part of the Yellow Corps, while also highlighting questions about the Guardians' trust in Hal due to his continued respect for his former mentor Sinestro.
Despite these initial hostilities and relationship flaws with John's parents, the episode concludes with hints of John's growing power, allowing him to create constructs without the ring. The segment wraps up by acknowledging that while the episode had specific narrative drawbacks, it was generally well-received by audiences. Viewers are encouraged to subscribe to the hosts' various channels for more content, and there is significant anticipation for Episode 4, which is expected to feature the introduction of the Yellow Lantern ring and further developments in John's journey.

Hey, what's going on? Me and Lamont are
back. I'm screaming for lanterns.
Episode three, titled Outcast. When his
father, what does that say? Oh gosh darn
it. When his father misinterprets the
Guardians contact, Jon becomes the next
choice for Green Lantern. After years of
preparation, he finally gets to
interview with the Guardians. Now, of
course, we are talking spoilers over
here. If you haven't seen the episode,
turn away. Go watch it. Come back. Get
all this spoilery goodness. But this
episode came out a few days ago. We're
just now giving you our recap. And
that's all good. Lamont, um, this
episode has strung up a lot of ruckus
online in the comment section, in the
threads. Some people love it, saying,
"Man, this is the best episode of this
season."
Uh uh HBO Max, they can't miss. We got
Lanterns. We got Welcome to Dairy. We
got um what was it? A Penguin. You know
what I'm saying? The Clayface is coming
out soon. Oh my god. But some people
like, "Oh my god, why you got to bring
up race? Why you [ __ ] on Hal Jordan?
Why are you saying he's privileged? Oh,
whoa." Anyway, uh how are you feeling
about the episode, man? Are you um you
more on the right, you more on the left?
somewhere in the middle.
How you feeling, sir? How you feeling?
>> I ain't never going to be in the middle
and I damn sure ain't going to never be
on the far right. This was a fantastic
episode and the individuals who are
always complaining about whenever
stories go into equality, the issues
black people deal with, oftent times
they obviously haven't read the source
material. And I'm not saying that you
need to read the source material to
understand the plight of black people in
today's society, you dumb asses. You are
the people that ruin TV and movie
experiences because you're so worried
about anything that you feel is woke,
which highlights your stupidity because
being woke means you are of knowledge.
You're intelligent. And you sitting up
here calling somebody not woke shows how
stupid you are. But in the comics, one
of the main story arcs for John is his
fight against racism in the military, in
his home life, he introduces to the
Guardians the issue that we have race
problems in America because they are
obtuse to it just like they did in this
episode. I am loving the actor playing
John Stewart more and more and more. And
this was a fantastic episode. HBO
usually don't miss and the show is still
great. And if you got a problem with
them introducing the issues that black
people go through because you want to
hide it, then go watch something else.
Go watch Barbie cuz that's what it
sounds like y'all want to do. Get your
panties in the water. Go watch Barbie.
>> Yeah, man. And uh as you just mentioned,
uh I just went to Google John Stewart's
origin and comics having have race
issues. Uh let me make this even bigger.
Yes, John Stewart's comic book origins
and history have always dealt directly
with race and black identity, a theme
that recently sparked heavy debate
following a unique backstory adaptation
in the TV's lanterns. Debut in politics
when John Stewart first appeared in
Green Lantern 87 in 1971 before most of
you cryb babies were born. his creator
Denny O'Neal and artist Neil Adams
explicitly designed him as a headstrong
raceconscious
architect. So you can read and Google
that yourself. Uh but that's just a
little context
um for meaning that your argument
doesn't make sense. And so, um, you
know,
>> even if even if they don't know that,
the fact that you have an attitude that
we are bringing up race issues, whether
you know the backstory or not, it's
still a problem for them,
>> right?
>> That's a problem.
>> I agree. I agree. I just wanted to add
some more gasoline to the fire. Um, you
know, and torch their ass. Uh, but
that's one thing, Lamont. Um, how did I
feel about the episode? I thought it was
fantastic as well. There was one
character that I hated pretty much until
the very end. I I couldn't We gonna talk
about it. Oh, they were driving me up a
goddamn wall, grinding my gears. I I I
It really was disgusting to me.
>> I know who it is.
>> Um they turned over a new leaf towards
the end of the episode, the final two
scenes they showed him. I was like, "God
dang, filing, you came around and has
some senses. Do you have a heart?"
Apparently, you do now. Uh, but I was
upset and I do have I'm going to go
ahead and give my nit that's a strong
criticism I have even though they kind
of save theirelves at the end. Um, but
my one nit even though I I I probably
give the episode a nine out of 10. Um,
but I still have a nitpick. My nitpick
is the order of episodes. I wish we
would have got this in episode one and
then episode one would have been episode
two and then episode two would have been
episode three. Um
maybe they didn't want to do that
because they're like, "Okay, if this is
episode one, it will turn off too many
people and they won't come back. You
know, we won't get the 9.3 million views
or however they did." So maybe that was
a strategy. I don't know. I'm making it
up. I'm speculating. But towards the end
of this, I was just and with all the
jump cuts and the timelines and the the
1980s 90s, uh, 2016, 2026,
I was like, man, even though I really
did enjoy this, I would have liked it
much more if they would have put this
episode as instead of this being episode
3, it would have been episode one.
Another thing is, and it kind of ties
into it, is I don't mind uh backstories.
Um, I don't mind nonlinear stories, but
at the same time, this episode to me did
not necessarily push the story forward
at all. We just went backwards. It was
still executed nice, great with
precision, but again, it's just the
order of episodes because at the end of
episode two, it's the last scene is how
flying off Earth, going across the
galaxy to planet OA, going into the
prison cell of Sinestro. He's like, "Hey
man, what's up with the uh the
manhunters?" And then Sinestro is like,
"Well, hey, tell me about who is this
John Stewart guy?" So, I'm like, "Oh,
snap. How in the world is Sinestro
across the freaking galaxy locked in a
cell? How do you know about John
Stewart? So, I'm thinking at the very
beginning of episode 3, we're going to
be diving deep into the lore. We're
going to be getting into the trenches
and finding out all this about Sinestro
and the Galactic Empire and whatever,
but we don't get any of that. we go
backwards in the story to get John's um
his origin, which again was great, but
the way I just explained it, I I just
would I wished it would have been in a
different order, more uh more linear. Um
do you do you see what I'm saying? You
understand where I'm coming from? You
agree? You disagree? Uh how you feeling
about all that?
You you're muted. You're muted.
audience. Uh, B, forgive me for that.
I'm halfway in the middle. I would have
liked for this episode. I'm fine with
where it's at, but if I would have
placed it, I would have placed it number
two. And for me, it does push the story
forward because we know the deeper,
darker motivations of Jon at this point.
We know why he's going to be one of the
best Green Lanterns ever. We have an
idea of why this man is going to be able
to wield the power without even needing
the ring because of his backstory,
because of what he went through, because
of the torture and the lies from his
mama, because of what how Jordan did to
him. We have a great understanding of
that. And in the future when he's able
to overcome certain things because of
his will and his lack of fear, we know
what that was all about. So, I was fine
with all that,
but I would have liked to have had some
of those questions answered that you
just mentioned. Um, you know, maybe they
could have done a cut scene to some of
that stuff in this episode. But I'm not
knocking the episode. I'm with you. I
give it a 9.5 out of five. And I love
how they weave the title of the episode
with the big homies in Atlanta, Outcast.
>> Okay. I thought you was about to say
something else. Um, I I do too. That
episode does have I mean the episode the
title does have dual meaning. What I was
smiling at just now is you notice when
they pulled up the title call for
lanterns it wasn't green it was yellow.
Did you notice that? Yeah.
>> I haven't heard anybody else talk about
that you know and yellow is the the the
color of fear. And I was like oh and it
kind of makes more sense why the show is
called lanterns instead of green
lanterns. But uh you told me that you
know who I'm talking about. Who am I
talking about that I didn't like in the
show or the the character at first?
>> It's only two people. It's only two
people it could be.
>> Either
John Stewart's mama or Hal Jordan. It's
the only two people it could be.
>> It was uh yeah, Bernardet. Uh John
Stewart's mother. I could not stand her.
I thought she was a horrible wife. I
thought she was a horrible mother. Um
she she got I I was furious, bro. I was
like, "Woman, you are disgusting." Like,
and it was making sense to me because I
was watching the episode and I'm like,
"Okay, she's here now, but where was she
at the very beginning?" Now, I thought
that John killed her on accident because
I'm I'm jumping forward when she was
like, "Okay, let's go practice again.
I'm going to go get your daddy so you
can shoot the apple off." And he was
like, "No, I want to shoot it off you."
I was like, "Damn, since she wasn't in
the first episode, she's probably dead.
He killed his mom right here on
accident. I'm glad that didn't happen.
And we got those answers later. But the
reason why I did not like her, first of
all, as far as her um her spousal
responsibilities, excuse me. I'm so
sorry. Excuse me. I couldn't help it. I
couldn't reach the mute. But I'm so
sorry. Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me.
Why do you not believe your husband? Why
do you not have faith in your husband?
You are supposed to be your husband's
number one cheerleader and have his back
no matter what. And you going to jump on
the bandwagon on the train of everybody
uh reprimanding your husband, calling
him crazy, and you don't believe him.
Okay, y'all are in the bed. You, the one
of your sons, Marcus or the other one
starts crying. You go out and try to
tend to your child. He is scared by the
the ring of the lantern floating him up.
You come back, he on the side of the bed
hyperventilating, sweating and stuff.
You trying to wonder what's going on. We
cut to the He said, "Oh, baby, the all
that stuff." We cut to the next scene.
He's shooting TVs and stuff like that.
Okay, Bernardet, I will give you some
grace. I will give you the benefit of
the doubt here. And like, yeah, your
husband can't be shooting TVs in the
house with the kids around. That's
dangerous. That's problematic. I will
give you that. But and even if your
husband did sound crazy when he first
tried to explain it to you, I'll give
you that, too. But Lamont, the proof is
in the mother freaking pudding on the
television that he shot. When he was
when when when he was going through it
that night, baby, I don't know what
happened, but an alien or a green ring
or green bubble floated me out, asked me
if I'm scared. I said I was scared and
it flew away. So then later on, how
Jordan is debuted on the news and
discloses information, the exact same
information, the exact same dialogue
that your husband described, and you
still don't believe him. It's on the
freaking news. He's in costume with the
mask on showing the powers. At that
point in time, you should have been
like, "Oh my gosh, baby, I am so sorry.
Uh, please forgive me." How is that not
proof enough? You know that your husband
does not know this man how Jordan that
they're not pulling some farce or joke
or anything like that. That alone him
popping up on the news and saying I'm a
new hero. The ring came to me and asked
me if I'm afraid. I said no. I'm
fearless. I am as steadfast now as I was
then. The exact same thing your husband
explained to you happened to him. But
you don't believe him. I I I was I was
like, "What the crap? What the f is
going on?
That's one thing, Lamont. On top of
that, a white lady pops up at your house
in the middle of the night, giving you
diamonds as big as our fist, explaining
everything. And hey, you know, uh, I'm
an alien. I'm a guardian, and we heard
that our process is not perfect. We
never had a lantern on Earth, and we
heard that our process is kind of
sending people, you know, giving them
PTSD. That right there should have been
the second confirmation. I don't believe
you. You just seem like some unfortunate
random white lady on my porch.
She grows up. I mean, yeah. Um, the
lantern gets big and shows you that
she's a lantern. And then what makes it
worse when she fin she is, she kicked
John off. Okay, they're going through
marital issues right now. They beefing.
John is not sleeping in the bedroom.
He's sleeping on the couch. Why the f
you got your husband sleeping on the
couch? And she said, "Hey, the alien
came over a few days ago. Why is it
taking you a few days to tell him? Like,
are you [ __ ] serious? Are you I'm I'm
like, I try to keep you PG-13, but I'm
This is insane. And we haven't even got
to the way that she's treating John yet.
That's three strikes right there,
Lamont. Am am I crazy? Am I missing
anything? You know, did I turn my head
and it was a a thing of dialogue that
popped up that explained her whole
mindset and psyche or something? Did I
watch the wrong Did I watch the the the
rough cut and I didn't get the final
version where they had an extra scene
explaining all of her BS? I I hated her,
bro, for that, bro. Horrible, horrible,
horrible wife based off that. We And
again, we haven't even got to the
mother. I'm I'mma calm down and take a
chill here. But am I making sense? Do
you understand where I'm coming from?
Please let me know.
>> I understand where you coming from. And
there's so much to unpack in what you
just said. I think the writers did a
good job of dealing with the fact that
in our society
for a woman to do the things she did in
this story makes it feel more heinous
than what a man would feel doing almost
as if it's expected for a man to behave
like she's behaving, not a woman to do
it. And then on top of that, you add in
that she's of minority race doing this
type of craziness. It really drives the
dagger in your back. However,
I want to give a shout out to the
actress playing badass Bernardet. Sis,
this is my first time seeing you. And
all I can say is
you is a top 50 finest that ever walked
planet Earth immediately. Your acting
fantastic.
Your dramatization
of being a psychotic parent. Fantastic.
Your facial expressions in moments where
we needed to know that you were scared.
Fantastic.
Everything you did made me hate you
about as bad as Be Avery hate you. I'm
just being honest with you. Your finest
can't get you out of this one. Sorry.
You
took a household of boys and a man. You
got the R&B group Boys the Men in your
house
and you basically was trying to get rid
of all of them. You was trying to off
all of them if not physically mentally
when your husband needed support from
you instead of being there for him. You
wasn't. And maybe it was because you had
the new baby. Maybe it was because your
hormones was off. You was busy worried
about the new baby and the other kids.
Either way, when times gets tough, you
still have a relationship. you have to
commit your all to no matter what the
circumstances are. This is your family.
You don't abandon them. And you abandon
them and then when your feelings got
hurt and you find out that your husband
was right, he didn't get the
opportunity. Now all of a sudden you
want to put this burden on your kid and
basically force feed him into not having
fear by doing all these eccentric
different things to make him become
tough. You ruined that boy's childhood.
And what if he would have never became a
lantern?
>> Yeah. Yeah. I I I agree. And not not
only that, man. Uh going back to the
husband when she came when he was on the
couch and they made the decision like,
"Okay, we got to train John." Before
that, man, she gave him some whack ass
halfbaked apology. I'm sorry people are
seeing you like this. And I'm I'm I'm
sorry as well that I didn't believe you,
man. I I I'm I'm the same. You need to
be on your knees serving him up for
breakfast, lunch, and dinner while
cooking him breakfast, lunch, and
dinner. Bending over, you know, uh uh
giving him breakfast, lunch, and dinner
in every room on the house. I mean, it
it this is awful. Um I could have sworn
it was divorce, but we see that they was
to still together at the very end. Uh
but she was awful, man. Um I I didn't
like her. Now, so if I pissed anybody
off, oh well, she did redeem herself at
the end of the episode to where um she
tried to ex I can't remember the scene.
Well, it was so many scenes where well,
not so many, but basically when um she
was telling John that he needs to choose
himself basically like, you know, as a
black person, you got to raise your own
hand and choose yourself. Don't let them
choose you. Now, that was a beautiful
scene. I was saying to myself, "Thank
you for being a loving, caring,
nurturing mother." Okay. Um, also when
John was grown and she was like, you
know, you wasted my electricity and all
that. That was he was an adult then. Um,
that was a nice scene between them, too.
But prior to that, bro, even when um
John,
not John, the father shot the apple off
of his head the first time. We first of
all we see that that was John's idea and
not the parents. So that made me feel an
infinite amount of times better. Um but
I was critical of the father uh played
by um um uh John Senior uh Mr. Jay Alons
I was critical of him as at first in the
first episode when I when he was
shooting apples off the tree. But I
remember in our recap in my in our
review, I said to myself, but at the
same time, he has some redeeming uh
qualities because as soon as it was
done, he was like, "Hey, I love you,
son." Or and and kind of gave him a hug
and a pat on the head and like, "All
right, great job. Let's go get a
cheeseburger." You know what I'm saying?
So, I'm like, "Okay, at least he showed
him some type of love and affection
there." But his mom never hugged him in
the episode. Never kissed him. Nothing
nothing like that at all. She was just
mean, cold, and everything. Even when
they dropped him off in the bad
neighborhood, when John came back in the
house and he saw all of his brothers
playing and and pillow fighting and
stuff, she was in his room like, "John,"
she didn't say, "Good job." She didn't
say, "I'm glad you're safe." Anything
like that. I left you a pork chop. It's
in the microwave. And then just going to
leave the room. Don't give him a hug or
nothing. And he jumps on the bed and
starts crying. I mean, you you're a
horrible mother, man. You're you're
horrible. I hate you. I hate you. I hate
you. I hate you. I I I'm feel like I'm
justified in saying that. Thoughts?
>> This is helicopter parenting from hell.
You want to live vicariously through
your son, him being a guardian.
And your feelings are hurt because you
ruined your husband's dreams by not
believing him and standing by that man's
side. So now in your mind, if you can't
get this job done for your son, this is
not about this this is not about the
safety of the galaxy. This is all about
that mom's ego and re and you know her
not wanting to let go and admit to the
mistakes she made. That's what this is
all about. And in this type of game,
it's the wrong place to be all about
yourself, lady.
>> Yeah. What do you think about this right
here? Um when Liliana played by Laura
Lenny uh was having this exchange I saw
with Bernardet explaining who she is um
her mission the um her being an a blue
of course we know that she's blue uh but
she was tall like probably 7 feet the
Guardians in the comics and the cartoons
have always been no taller than three
feet. Uh so what do you think about this
scene right here the diamond and and all
that stuff? Uh how you feeling?
First of all, shout out to the actress.
I love her. I loved her in um
golly, what was that show she played in?
Anyway, I I love um Ozark. Loved her in
Ozark. She is fantastic everywhere she
goes. I love the scene. I love them
transitioning, showing her as a guardian
from the back of the head, kind of
leaving the face in mystery. Us folks
that do reviews, we know why they're
doing it like that to save some money.
But it still was good for TV.
>> It was still very good for TV. And I'm
sitting here saying, "Why don't Why
don't you tell us where you got that
diamond from, lady? Because if you just
handing folks out diamonds like that,
why don't you go get a truckload of
them? Make everybody on planet Earth
rich." Qua.
>> Um, and I just felt like when she
revealed all that, mom should have ran
in the house, put the baby away, got
right on her knees, and got between her
husband's leg and said, "I am so sorry,
baby. lay back and relax. But she
didn't.
>> She did not, man. Um, she didn't. That's
that's that's unfortunate that she uh
didn't right there. I was about to say
something else, but you made me laugh um
about uh making making them rich. Um I I
I I will say I was a bit uh turned off
by this at first. Like I'm like, why are
they still showing like the human form?
I want to see some aliens. But it it
makes sense. Um, so I I don't really
have any complaints there. Um, how did
you feel about the conversation though
at the table? Uh, at towards the end of
the conversation, Bernardet was like,
"Man, y'all don't even notice us in
space." And, uh, I I I'll give some the
aliens, the guardians that some grace as
well there. Um, you know, cuz they've
never really interacted with humans that
much before and they realize they made
some mistakes and they're trying to fix
it. Uh, but to give Bernard Death some
credit, I will admit she do look good
right there. Um, she says, "Do you
realize how unfair it is to ask the
black man, is he afraid in this
particular climate?" You know, and I
didn't even think about that until she
said it. And, you know, I thought that
was um a pretty accurate question to
ask. Um, you agree or disagree?
>> Oh, 100%. But like I said, the aliens
are obtuse to the issues we're having on
planet Earth. But they shouldn't be
obtuse because they claim they've been
observing her for so long. And I like
Bernardet admitting that fact. But the
problem with her admitting that fact,
she did not express admitting that fact
to her husband with actions.
when this man tried to tell you what was
going on, you shot him down
and now all of a sudden he's been
validated. You want to uplift him. And I
I do like that they're having this back
and forth, alien towoman, and she's
giving the Guardians a great
understanding of what it's going to be
like to have John in their service and
what he has to deal with just here on
planet Earth so that they can kind of
understand what is going on on our
planet that shapes us. So, I enjoyed the
convers. I thought it was a good job.
>> Right on. Right on. Something that did
kind of confuse me uh during the scene
towards the beginning of the scene the
interview. Well, first of all, we got to
talk about like John sat there for like
12 16 hours, bro. Like my goodness
gracious, that is uh that is some
dedication, but that also may be
conditioning from uh his horrible
childhood cuz again, he never asked to
be a lantern. Um they just kind of
forced this on him. But
>> John said in this scene right here, he
was like, "Hey, I have a question. the
rings usually pick the next user or or
the next uh ring bearer. So why are
y'all conducting interviews? And she
says because of your condolences. He
gave his condolences in that meeting. So
they made the decision for him to have
this meeting before he before he
arrived. So that didn't really make
sense to me. If you can shine some light
on that, that would be cool. Um, but you
know, I I don't understand that. Do you
>> I I think that they're they're keeping
him in the dark because there's a lot of
stuff they not telling him from the
manhunters to the real reason why they
want him to become the next lantern over
Hal Jordan. I mean, she basically did
everything she could short of saying,
"If we kill Hal Jordan or if Jordan gets
killed, would you be willing to kill him
to take that that ring?" She basically
came short of saying that. So, I think
that they're just trying to tap dance
around a lot of issues with John Stewart
to make sure he is number one loyal and
number two. Um, he's ready for the job
and they don't want him to know
everything because keep in mind these
Guardians be Avery.
>> While they their mission is to serve and
protect the galaxy, they have done a lot
of dastardly stuff trying to fulfill
that objective. and they probably want
to keep as many innocent people in the
in the clear as they possibly can. And
John is no different.
>> Right on. Y'all let us know what y'all
think right here. Um for John's birthday
right here, um this bothered me, too. It
made me upset uh for both of them. I'm
just like, this is a horrible uh scene
between y'all being parents. The reason
why I say that is you're clearly showing
favoritism to your uh to a certain
child, to John. Um whether it's
intentional or not, and that's going to
affect the other kids. We don't know the
relationship that John has with his
siblings when we get when they get
older, we'll find out. But during this
scene, Lamont, they wasn't talking to
the family or the other kids at all.
They were just talking to John, not
including him, not including them at
all. I felt like the other brothers
shouldn't shouldn't he excuse me
shouldn't even have been in the room.
One of them ran out. Marcus was like,
"You always pick him." And the other
brother said, "Uh, oh, you had him going
to school by himself and sleeping in
another room. I thought you liked him
more." So, the kids at a young age are
clearly under the impression that their
parents like John more than them. So,
the fact that they never gave the kids a
conversation about this whole thing
like, "Hey, this is what the deal is.
This is a situation, uh, they chose your
brother or your brother chose this or we
did this. We we we're making the
decision together. He's going to be a
lantern. We're going to support him
together as a family. You know, if you
want to aspire to do something, we're
going to support you, Marcus. We're
going to support you other brother, too.
We're always going to support each
other, you know, and love each other.
When your brother When your brothers do
good, you you have their back. You
support them. You cheer them on. It was
It was just none of that. None of that
at all. No line of dialogue saying,
"Hey, I know it looks like this, but you
know, I love you all the same." It It
was none of that doing this scene. And
then talk about trying to live through
your child vicariously like the life you
wanted. I mean, it would be different if
John
>> if if if John was a little boy. And
actually, he was a little boy at the
very beginning of the season one. He saw
how on TV and he aspired to be a
superhero like him. Hey dad, I want to
be a superhero. Okay, then you can go
down this path that you created. But you
know, y'all kind of forced this on John.
Well, before that, uh, I just didn't
like it, man. I just thought it was
horrible parenting. Um, how you feeling?
>> How about that?
>> Number one, the boy wanted crayons for
his birthday and they they done brought
his ass a green lantern suit. Yeah.
>> I mean, because deep down on the inside,
he's got this talent for drawing and
architecture.
And instead of catering the things he
needs to be a young child, all that
they're doing is pushing adulthood on
them. And if there's one thing that you
should never rob your kid of is the
opportunity to be a child, where they
don't have to worry about bills, where
they can be curious and learn, where
they can have fun. That's you only get
one of those in life. And these people
are basically robbing him of that
because they want to push not just an
adult themed issue on him, but an adult
themed issue where he's going to be
having to carry the weight of a whole
sector of the galaxy. And so I just felt
like that whole thing was just horrible.
And it just it kind of seems like um dad
is a little panty draws whip if you want
my opinion.
>> I ain't mad at you for saying that
though. Um I'm not. So, y'all let us
know. Is the Father Penny draws whipped?
Um, maybe just a little bit. We'll see.
Uh, when we started this recording, this
uh breakdown, you talked about the title
of the episode, Outcast. Uh, why does
that stand out to you? I'm curious.
>> Because they play Outcast music like
three or four times in this episode.
They even did it on the outro when it
when it was going off and that was I
felt like that was pretty good. They
play Atlantanss in it. So, you know, it
was a parallel for me. I really really
love the music um this particular
episode and I thought it fit.
>> Yes, cuz they did treat um John like an
outcast. So
>> Mhm.
>> Good good stuff right there. I'mma let
you drive this scene right here. I want
your interpretation of it, sir. You
know, John is pulling up to um one of
his superiors
>> and uh explain it to me. What are your
thoughts here?
>> Aaron, first of all, Aaron Pierre Paul,
you rocking the hell out of that suit.
you rocking the hell out of this this
season, brother. You is doing great
work. Excellent work. And
anytime you have the the government
engages in what they did with him all
the time, we have allies which on paper
were supposed to be their buddies, but
sometimes our allies are harboring
dangerous people for whatever their
reason. And we decide we want to take
those people out. But we can't with the
military force because then we might be
breaking treaties. We might be breaking
clauses. We might be breaking deals we
have with our allies. And so we have
someone that they need taken out in
Russia
and they can't send the troops in there.
This has got to be a covert mission. And
they need someone who is a sniper and a
head hunter. And there ain't nobody in
the business better than John. And so
John is sent over to Russia to take this
dude out. And he's made aware by the the
cap the I think the colonel that was
sitting across from him that you might
be over there for a hot minute to get
this guy. John was like, I can do this.
Well, what we didn't know be able was
that I can do this would turn into nine
damn months and my man grow a beard. And
when he had the opportunity to get him,
who comes and steps in his way? None
other than how racist huxable ass
Jordan.
Right on. Right on. Yeah, man. Um, I
would have been pretty hot about that,
John. His response for being
dishonorably discharged when he did
nothing wrong is [ __ ]
>> Um,
>> yeah.
>> I mean, I liked them. I like him as far
as, you know, he respects authority and
the chain of command, etc., but this is
just too much, bro. I'll be damned,
>> right?
>> If I'mma sleep in the freaking woods for
nine months off of berries and bugs
and you going to dishonorably discharge
me?
>> No. No.
>> You better You better slide these people
on the side.
>> Yeah. At the least. At the least.
I mean, this is why people have crashs
>> and and and and then they want to get
mad at the person. Oh, they're crazy.
What are we gonna No. Are you nine
months? Not God. Lamont, think about
that. Nine. I couldn't even last four
days.
Nine months,
>> bro. I probably couldn't even last four
Well, four hours, man. Like,
>> dude stayed in the woods. Not He missed
Christmas. He miss birthdays. He miss
his brother's birthday. He probably miss
his own damn birthday. N
>> I couldn't even done it if I was catered
food every day outside like that. Maybe
if I'm if I'm catering I get a tent. You
know what I'm saying? But no, that
that's uh that that's too much, man. Uh
he should he should have been flipping
tables uh flipping buildings. You know
what I'm saying?
>> The thing is that's next level
discipline on his part.
>> There's no TV. There's no internet. You
ain't got no panty draws. It's not like
you like you eating gourmet food. You
having to do hand jobs to yourself if
you want to do that. And then how often
are you sleeping because you got to keep
one eye open and one eye closed.
>> Yeah.
>> Bro,
no way. And then and then how Jordan
gonna pop up and do the wrong thing to
cause you to be honorably discharged. Oh
no. you at some point in time you're
gonna had to discharge one of his
eyeballs.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Um definitely, man. Um that
that that's crazy, man. You know, he was
doing push-ups and sit-ups and you know,
all this stuff. Um you know, that that
was uh pretty impressive. But however,
about the scene, I don't know why this
was funny to me, but it just was. Maybe
it was, excuse me, intentional,
unintentional. But um the guy was like,
"Hey man, you don't got no extra clothes
outside, no gym bag. All right, I got
you some a beer in a steak. But the
point of meeting at the Outback, man, is
to be discreet, you know. And we got Mr.
uh Stoic Face over here with no
personality at all. U just like, hey, I
don't I don't need a panic button. I
don't panic, sir. You know, that's cool.
Um I was going to Some people may
disagree with me about the bad parenting
because they'll be like, "Well, Brandon,
it seemed like the parents worked. The
parenting worked. You know, John is not
crashing out. He's actually meeting with
the lanterns, training, you know, he's
doing this, he's doing that. Yeah, but
we don't know what his relationship is
with people or if he's able to maintain
them. Now, yes, he did smash a grandma
in the first episode. So, he has a
degree of social skills, but at the same
time, it's a grandma and that's not
necessarily a flex. You know what I'm
saying? And just because you can smash,
you know, if just because you can pick
somebody up at the bar or wherever just
like this, that don't mean that you know
how to keep somebody. You know what I'm
saying? And if you want to just, you
know, have some some fun real quick, you
know, you just got to go to the weight
room. That don't mean that you got some
game or some heart or some character or
personality. Am I making sense or am I
tripping?
>> It makes sense. I mean, this now the
only the only place I got to I got to
kind of pump the brakes is, you know.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah.
>> That grandma fine, you know. I mean,
Holly Berry is a grandma, and all of us
is going to let her jump in a slingshot
and fling herself at us the same way
this lady did.
>> You know what I mean, though?
>> This lady did.
>> You know what I mean?
>> I know what you mean. I know what you
mean. But still,
>> okay, I'll give you that. I'll give you
that.
>> We don't We don't discriminate over
here, lady. We love our geriatrics.
Okay, y'all find geriatrics nowadays.
Okay, but I what what he's really trying
to say is we still don't know the man's
mentality. She threw herself at him. And
the reason she threw herself at him is
because me and B Avery got this little
theory.
>> We think she's probably the manhunter or
she's the one representing the
manhunters and she sees that Jon is the
one based on some conversations Sinestro
had with Hal this episode. I think that
she is trying to figure out her way in
with John to get information to take
down Hal and probably the whole lantern
corps.
>> Yeah. What do you think about the
relationship that Hal has with Sinestro?
Um she asked him uh Lyanna Lyanna
whatever her name is the guardian like
you know hey what do you know about
Sinestro? Um and she says that hey
Sinestro is the one that trained Hal and
you know how Yeah. And John was like,
you know, told what he knows, what he
heard on the news. And what do you feel
about how do you feel about that
exchange, that exposition right there,
and her disgust or her disdain that even
though Sinestro is evil and betrayed
him, that Jon still, no, not John, but
Howal still rever him to some degree.
>> If it don't mean nothing, that's fine,
too. I just, you know, I just curious.
I think for her they're frustrated that
that she she wants Howal's she wants
Hal's loyalty and other lantern's
loyalty to remain with them. And
although Hal does not like what Sinestro
did because Hal is the one that arrested
them and threw his ass in jail, he still
respects the man for teaching him how to
be a guardian. I mean, how to be a
lantern. It'd be no different if, god
forbid, whoever taught me and you how to
do YouTube. They were YouTubers. They
taught us how to do YouTube. And now all
of a sudden, we done had to take their
place because they done went and robbed
the bank. We don't dis We don't agree
with them robbing the bank, but we still
can have respect for the way they
treated us when they was on the straight
and narrow. And that's probably what Hal
feels for Sinestro.
And if I were the guardians, I would be
a little concerned because it's kind of
like if this man was doing bad behavior
that we got to lock him up for eternity.
It does make you question what is he
still saying to you that keeps you
coming back.
>> Yeah.
>> Cuz I can I can respect somebody from
afar and be thankful, but if I keep
coming back, that says something totally
different. And I understand what the
Guardians are saying.
>> Okay. Okay. Um, I was going to ask you a
follow-up question to that, but it'll
dive too deep into my personal life, and
I don't I don't want to open up a a can
of worms, but this is coming back to my
memory. Uh, it was a flashback scene in
this episode where John was in bed. He
was drawing the apple
>> and his mom came in and she was like,
"You don't have to do that." And she was
like, "Man, you really are skilled. I
know that you want to, you know, be able
to draw a little bit more, but you can't
do much right now." John was like, "But
we got to train." and she was like, you
know, uh it's normal not to want to hurt
the people that you love, uh etc. That
was where the mother redeemed herself.
And I was like, goodness gracious. Cuz
prior to this, you know, you was awful.
Um it really sucks though that she lied
to him or they lied to him, excuse me,
about the birds. Um
I kind of thought that John would hate
her for that, but he didn't, you know,
because they had a a relationship
towards the end. But yeah, that not the
episode, but that scene right there
where she was like, "You got to choose
yourself." And, you know, all that. I I
was so thankful for that because uh I
was severely uh pissed off um prior to
that. Um and I'm surprised that, you
know, John still loves his parents. He
said that and you can see it towards the
end of this episode. But when he shot
the apple off her head, I I thought she
was going to die. Uh I I I I really did
think that she was going to die. And um
that would have been horrible. That that
would have been horrible. I think the I
think the bigger story for me was you
was afraid to do it with your dad, but
you not with your mom. So, are you
basically saying you harbor more
resentment and hatred toward your mom
and more love toward your dad? Because
he could not do it with dad. He was so
fearful. But with mom, he was like, "A
[ __ ] it."
>> Yeah.
>> If I shoot apple, I shoot you in the
eye.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I I'm not u I'm not mad at
that at all. Um I'm not. So I I agree
with you 100%. And so um and again I
think it was cool that maybe they g she
kind of gave up indirectly
uh didn't speak on it and admitted John
into our school which is great. I love
her for that as well. Uh because that's
what he wanted to do as a child. He can
draw his ass off. Um you know so that
that was cool. And I do like Do I have a
picture of this? I don't I thought I No,
I do have a picture. I do like this
scene right here how they did this. I
wouldn't I thought he was really well he
is in art school but you know a guardian
infiltrated and pretended that there was
a professor and was like hey we in
recruit mode right here you know uh
conjure up your daddy's watch Lamont
that he didn't just conjure up a watch
bro he he conjured up every nut bolt
widget
anything you can think of in that watch
man down to everything all hundred
pieces thoughts there sir thoughts
>> fantastic man is just showing you why
he's going going to be the greatest
lantern ever. He has that much thought
and control and you already seen last
episode he was able to conjure up a bird
even without the ring which is what we
kind of talked about earlier in this
review that he winds up becoming so
strong with his will he don't even need
the ring to do constructs and all that.
So, I think that this was just kind of,
you know, the beginning of understanding
why he was able to conjure up a bird and
be that far away from a ring and the
bird still follow him and why there was
a lot of hype about how powerful he's
going to be.
>> Yeah. I can't wait for him to say the
quote, you know, in bright and black,
what was it? In brightest day and
blackest night, no hero shall escape my
sight. Uh something something um
>> beware of my power green lantern light.
>> My bad. Fans, don't don't rip me up in
the comments. Um, but yeah, I I like the
fact that they had the little bubble at
the end and you know, it showed him how
he fell through the ceiling until the
mattresses and uh all of that. And so,
uh, why do you think the Guardians want
to have Hal replaced
cuz he's been doing this for decades and
they
>> trust him?
>> What did he do for them not to trust him
though? Cuz he's been doing this for a
while.
He continues to go and visit Sinestro
who tried to overthrow the Landon Corps.
And if he's a bad guy, and I know we
know he trained you, but he's also a bad
guy that you took down. Why do you
continue to go visit him?
>> Why you continue to go rogue? Because
they were saying that he does a lot of
he does a lot of things, use his ring in
a way that they don't want him to use it
all the time. And so at the end of the
day, what I want to know is if y'all are
the Guardians, why don't y'all just take
his ring? Why why are we playing these
games?
>> That's actually a good question. Um I
didn't think about that. What I I was
going to push back and say that well the
only reason he went to go visit Sinestro
was for reconnaissance, for information
on why the manhunters are on Earth. So
that's a just cause. Now, if if he's
going around continuing to use his ring
and powers on um humans or non-aliens,
terrestrials, that that's a more valid
argument to me. Um you know, just kind
of stepping out of your jurisdiction
causing a ruckus. So, I'm kind of 50/50
on that right there. But
they they make the deal. John has the
job or you know, he got he's an intern
now in training. Goes home. Mom, dad, it
paid off. 18, 25 years. Cuz I don't I
don't think when John went home to tell
his parents, I hopefully he was a more
he didn't look like he was 18 years old.
He looked like he was I don't know how
he looked, but he looked much older. Uh
but um Hal shows up and he's there. I
guess the Guardians gave him the news
and he's putting on the front like,
"Yeah, I'm going to train him." But when
he gets outside, he cussing out John
like, "You're not going to get this ring
over my dead body. It's my job. It's my
ring. Leave me alone." and and he he
flaws off. Um some tension there and he
was trying to talk crap. I don't know
what happened to your mic, but I'm
hearing some background noise now. But
um what do you what do you think about
that exchange that Hal gave him at the
end and that attitude that they had?
It's not really the a good first
impression in my opinion, but what are
your thoughts?
I think that this is just showing how
pretty much in the lantern core,
everyone who trains newbies is tough as
hell and they hate them. That's just
part of how the comics go. And I think
they want us to believe that probably
before this season is up, there's going
to be a knockdown dragout fight between
Hal and um Jon and maybe even a fight
with with Powers. But I think it's a
misdirect and Hal know what the deal is.
But at some point in time, Hal is gonna
wind up going to the yellow power of
fear and then it's going to have to be
Jon to take him down. And who better to
do the job than John?
Nope.
You're on mute. We can't
>> My fault. My bad. I thought you were
saying that you was muted. Uh I was
saying no. I disagree with you. Um I
don't think that Hal is going to go down
the dark side and and turn into a yellow
lantern. I was also saying that um I've
heard some theories that he is got
infected by Parallax. That is um is
Parallax just an evil alien or is he
part of the yellow lanterns as well?
And now you're muted.
Now you're muted.
>> He could be both, but he could be both,
but most of the time they associate him
with the the the yellow the yellow light
of fear.
>> Okay. Um, great episode other than the
bad parts I mentioned, but at least
Bernardet did have some redeeming
qualities and it seemed like, you know,
John doesn't hate his parents. Sades
loves them and they did a good job, but
it was, you know, a bunch of luck in my
opinion. Uh, but it was great. I cannot
wait to see episode 4. Uh, Lamont, what
are your final thoughts, sir?
Stay tuned for episode 4, folks. This
thing is just getting better and better
and better, and I want to know when are
they going to stick the yellow light of
fear ring in this? Because remember,
it's not called Green Lanterns, it's
