Lanterns Episode 1 Recap | THE GREEN LANTERN UNIVERSE IS HERE! | John Stewart & Hal Jordan
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The hosts of this recap enthusiastically discuss the premiere of *Lanterns*, an HBO Max series set in the DC Universe, emphasizing its commitment to a gritty, dark tone that distinguishes it from Marvel's humor-filled style. While one host initially had reservations about the casting of Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, their opinions shifted positively after seeing the actors in action, praising Pierre's performance and accepting the dynamic between the veteran Hal and the rookie John. The episode is noted for its mature content suitable for an HBO audience, featuring intense training sequences where John Stewart faces abusive tactics to build resilience, a narrative choice justified by the high-stakes nature of becoming a Green Lantern.
A significant portion of the review focuses on the show's intricate storytelling involving multiple timelines, starting in 1996 and jumping to 2016, which allows for an effective introduction of lore regarding the Green Lantern Corps and the existence of alien life on Earth. The hosts appreciate how the series blends superhero action with elements of a murder mystery and police procedural, particularly through the introduction of Sheriff Kelly McDonald, who initially dismisses Hal's claims of alien involvement as local hooliganism. This setup creates tension between John Stewart, who follows protocol and suspects foul play, and Hal Jordan, who possesses insider knowledge but is viewed with suspicion by his colleagues and the public due to his celebrity status.
As the episode progresses, the hosts analyze the complex web of relationships and potential conspiracies surrounding Hal Jordan's arrest and subsequent release by a wealthy benefactor named Will Min. They theorize that the large, fenced-in property associated with Will Min might be connected to the villain Dark Side or an intergalactic espionage plot involving terraforming and colonization, raising questions about whether Hal has been corrupted by yellow energy or is working against his own interests. The discussion also touches on the emotional stakes, including John Stewart's developing feelings for Shy, known as Hawk Girl, and the hosts' excitement to see how these romantic subplots unfold within the broader context of the Justice League's formation.
In conclusion, the recapists express strong satisfaction with the first episode's ability to balance world-building, character development, and high-quality visual effects, even if the amount of green constructs used was minimal compared to previous adaptations. They highlight the show's potential to win critical acclaim similar to HBO's *The Penguin*, advising viewers to be patient as the narrative builds slowly before reaching its climax. With the series set in 2016 leading into a future timeline around 2026, the hosts are eager to see how this story intersects with other DC Universe projects like the upcoming *Superman* film and the introduction of characters like Guy Gardner, promising an engaging journey for both comic book fans and general audiences alike.

What is going on everyone? Welcome back.
It is B Avery with Lamont. We are
talking lanterns. This is HBO HBO Max
season 1 episode 1. It is the pilot
episode. Lamont, this was highly
anticipated. We are both superhero comic
book fans. We love Marvel, but we love
our DC2. Guys, this will be full
spoilers. I was not initially happy with
the casting of Aaron Pierre as John
Stewart, the Black Green Lantern. Uh I
was pretty cool with Kyle Chandler as
Hal Jordan. Uh but I feel different at
that now. Ever since we've gotten a few
trailers, Lamont, I've been more
accepting um of the casting of this
brother right here. And I will say uh
right off the bat uh I think he did a
great job. Uh I I am enjoying everything
that we're seeing in this first episode.
and Lamont the way that this started off
like oh my gosh talk about is this a
toxic household my brother Jay Alons
Nicholson who we know from the show P
Valley I think you're a fan of that show
you can let me know man Lamont was this
>> was this the best training possible or
one of the most abusive relationships
known to man I don't know I'm on the
fence I'm talking a lot but I want to
know man how did you feel about this
opening scene how do you about this
episode in general. I'm curious. I have
no idea. Where you at, sir? Where you
at?
>> If B Avery will indulge me and just give
me the floor for just a few seconds to
just set this set the standard for DC.
>> Often times people feel like me and B
Avery, we're Marvel fanboys, but we have
to tell you, we're not. We
[clears throat] understand the value of
DC. We understand the value of Marvel.
And we don't always have to pull out our
damn trinkets. But ladies and gentlemen,
[laughter] we support DC comics over
here. Okay? It's just that we support DC
comics when they stay DC, meaning
they're gritty, they're dark, they're
not full of humor. That's Marvel's
thing. We as fans want to see DC stay
DC. And that is what the opening of
Lanners has done for us. First of all,
it's HBO, ladies and gentlemen. They're
not making this kid friendly. And it's
HBO Sunday night, meaning that for HBO,
this is a tent pole event. They only put
their best shows on Sunday night. And
having said that, I will answer be
Avery's question. I love Little Murder,
Jonso,
but in a superhero world, what he did is
fine, but in a human world that we live
in, hell no. That's horrible parenting.
Because if you sneeze while you shooting
that damn gun, your son is gone. And it
was a it was a real accident, but you
shouldn't have been doing this damn
stupid ass behavior anyway. Okay. A
mosquito come bite you on the elbow
while you shooting at your son, he's
lost an eye around here like Pety the
damn pirate. No, Jono. No. In human
world, that's horrible parenting. But in
Green Lantern world and you know your
son is about to be a lantern. I guess
it's okay.
>> Yeah, man. [laughter]
You funny. I don't I don't disagree with
you, man. Uh it's crazy because they've
been doing it for a while. If you look
behind him, you see that there was at
least 30 bullet holes. So, they've been
he' been training him like this since
he' been two or three years old,
>> you know. U But to play devil's advocate
Lamont, he did show him love and tender
tender love and care afterwards. He gave
him a hug. He smiled. He embraced him.
He said, "Let's go grab a burger." You
know, um I'm not opposed to whoopins,
you know. I mean, I know that's taboo
right now and they say you shouldn't
whoop the kids and all of that, but I
got my butt whooped. I I didn't get shot
at with apples exploding over my head,
but um but Lamont, you you have to
think, man, if you're going to be a cop,
not of the the county, the city, the
state, the the government of the planet
of space, you got to have a hard shell.
You got to be tough, you know? And so
maybe this is what the doctor ordered.
Something else I liked about this
episode, man, is what they're doing with
the timeline. Uh we got three different
timelines. We'll save the last one for
the end of this the conclusion, but it
starts off in 1996 and then like they
released the first five minutes of this
episode on YouTube. And man, they
crammed a I don't want to use the word
crammed uh because that just sounds for
well whatever. They did a great job with
the first five minutes giving us the
origin story of John Stewart, the lore
of Green Lanterns and where they're
coming from. That they've been around
since it says 1996, but the subtitle
says that they've been around 10 years
prior to that. And he just showed up and
stopped a meteor from crashing into uh
the land, destroying people. And so I I
loved all that. that the that John
Stewart is the trainee of Howal Jordan,
but they've kind of had a one-way
connection since he was a child. I mean,
he's young. He's looking up to a real
life superhero. Uh, that's in the
military like his father. It makes
sense. So, um, we talked about the
training of John, but I like the
introduction of Hal as well with him
being on the news and how this is not a
secret, okay? like it is out there like
in the '9s, in the 80s that there there
are other planets out there. The galaxy
is not empty. There's intelligent life.
They're here on Earth. We have a
superhero. This is what he can and can't
do. These are his powers. These are his
abilities. It's all over the place. I
love that. How do you feel about the
intro with uh with how Jordan on the
news and all that?
>> Oh man, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the way
they intro Aaron Pierre Paul as um John
Stewart. I, you know, even though I'm
picking on um Jay Alfonso playing the
dad, obviously, even though they didn't
come out and say it be Avery, he
obviously has a relationship with Hal
Jordan. He has to because in order for
you to be trying to put your th son
through that level of breaking fear as
to shoot at him, you've got to know that
this is going to become your son's
destiny. He's got to know that. And I
enjoyed the way they introduced Hal
Jordan, um, played by Kyle Chandler,
folks who did Friday Night Lights. And
this show has somewhat of a feel of
Friday Night Lights. The first episode
does. Anyway, I've I've enjoyed it so
far and I've enjoyed the going back and
forth in time. I think it really fits
this story and I am so happy DC and
Warner Brothers decided to present this
story in the way that they did. and be
Avery mentioned his apprehension about
John Pierre Paul paying um Steuart
Lanner. I had the same reservation,
folks. For some reason, I didn't care
for the actor um and it was all based on
bias because of what other people said,
>> but now that I've had a chance to see
him in action here, oh, folks, he's
going to be he's one of he's he's a
great choice for this. Okay, hands down.
I'm enjoying his his presentation of
this John Stewart. He's gonna be a
member of the Justice League when they
put it together. He's gonna be the best
for the team.
>> Right on. Something um and I'm I mean I
love I like DC, but I'm more Marvel as
far as my knowledge is concerned. Um I
was always under the impression that
both Hal and Jordan uh Hal and Jordan
both Hal and John could be Green
Lanterns all at the same time, but it
doesn't seem like that's the case here.
Um, also when we're meeting them, when
they're together in I don't want to say
present time, it's 2016.
Um,
I'm How How did you feel about like he
says that the Guardians chose who they
are? I thought it was this the the
sentience the sentient mind of the ring
that chose people at random who they
thought was worthy. I didn't know that
it was the Guardians. Am I incorrect or
are they comic accurate? And does it
even matter to you? Do you even care?
>> Doesn't matter because you both have
been presented in comics. Both have been
presented in cartoons. It doesn't matter
to me. I kind of look at the ring and
the guardians is interchangeable.
>> They they created the rings. The
consciousness of the rings are the
guardians. So I I consider either one is
fine for me.
>> Okay. Are you cool with um John being a
trainee of how or did you kind of want
them to be at the same level?
>> I'm fine with it. Um
on on paper, I'm probably more kind of
no, but the way that they've introduced
this and just the level that John has
pushed back against how but has also
shown that he respects him, but he's not
going to take jump from him. I like
where this is going and I feel like
they're setting us up for the comic run
that me and you have seen on the cartoon
stage, but I've also read in the comics.
>> I got you. Um, and this it was pretty
intense the training. You know, John is
like, "Hey, we've been doing this for
two months now. I haven't even worn the
ring yet." Drives off a damn cliff while
he does a burrow roll out the car. I was
like, "Whoa." And the thing is, we saw
we've seen this this advertised in the
trailers and the marketing a ton, but it
was still very impactful for me. And I
was still like, damn, I can't believe he
did that. I wonder what construct that
he made. I like that they teased us just
a little bit at the very beginning. I
love the way that that was shot uh well
performed by Aaron Pierre, but he
grabbed the ring, put it on, and thought
of bubble wrap. That's what we found out
later. And I also uh again, I like the
way I like the lore. I like the world
building. As soon, you know, as Aaron
Pier, as John Stewart is coming back, he
gets the hologram of Hal, uh, trying to
trying to send himself a message. I like
that. And also, when he catches up to
him at the taco stand, you know, Hal is
a celebrity. Everybody knows him. He's
been around for more than a decade, you
know, saving the world. Everybody's
trying to take pictures, get selfies. I
like all of that. Even up to the end of
the scene where he says, "Hey, there's
Hel in Nebraska. pay the check and he
flies out of there. I like that. That
was cool. It was neat. Um, there wasn't
a lot of green, but I still like the
effects of him flying off and the
reactions to everybody as well. I know
that was a lot, but like how do you feel
about all that? Do you agree or disagree
with anything I said?
>> Oh, I agree with that. Um, and I
actually like the fact that they're not
with letting him wear the suit in the
very first couple of episodes. like he's
just
>> kind of like a international space cop
or space detective because that's what
we're getting here.
>> He feels in his heart of hearts what's
going on with where we're going is a
it's a space crime. But everybody else
in the situation don't feel that way.
And John Stewart is just kind of like,
you know, he's just going off of what
he's learned about the lanterns, what
he's learned of how. So, he's kind of
just still using rational sense to make
sense of something that maybe only Hal
can make sense of.
>> Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And y'all let us know
what y'all think in the comments
section. Do you agree or disagree uh
with anything that we are saying? Um and
I like the wisdom uh coming from how too
as like why he doesn't wear the suit
that much anymore. Uh referencing a tie.
Um, I know we had the Ryan Reynolds
Green Lantern back in 2011, 15 years
ago. Wow, that's that's crazy. You know,
they were CGI suits, [clears throat]
but we don't we haven't really got a
full shot of the suits um in this
adaptation just yet. But in the intro
scene, we kind of got excuse me, I'm
sorry, a shot of how like shoulders,
chest up. I don't know if you caught
that or saw it in the trailer. How you
feeling about that so far? Do you want
it to be more of a practical or CGI like
it was 15 years ago with Ryan Reynolds?
>> I think that where we're at in
technology, we can get both. I rather
the suit be practical. Um,
probably it's not going to be practical,
but if it is CGI, as long as it looks
good, I'm fine with it. Like the issue
with Ryan Reynolds, it to me, I actually
like that movie. But folks, you got to
understand, I am one comic book fan who
tends to like a lot of things that these
other brothers don't like. I like Thor,
too, whereas some people's like, "Ew,
Lamont, you're nasty. Ew, you eat that?"
"Yeah, I ate that." And I tend to like
Ryan Reynolds um first, Green Lantern.
But where the where the overall movie
went bad was not per se the CGI, it was
just a bad told story. Um the villain
setup was bad. And if in this series we
can get a good story with good CGI, all
is forgiven and we'll like it.
>> Right on. Right on. Right on. Now, uh we
have a new character here. Uh new to me
at least. Uh she's funny to me.
>> She may be funny to you, too.
>> Uh you're laughing, so you may know who
I'm talking about. Introducing Miss
Sheriff, uh Kelly, uh played by Kelly
McDonald. Um she's like, "Hey, man. I
got this. Okay. Y'all coming over here
scaring people, making everybody
nervous. All right. These are just a few
hooligans that was drunk, got high, and
killed each other. This ain't got
nothing to do with no aliens, man. How
do you know? I I have a feeling or feel
and feel my ass is basically the energy
that she's giving uh John and Hal. Uh
but yeah, man. They they pull up to um
to the stadium, man, and people getting
shot in the chest at a at a Friday Night
Football. Lamont, what what is going on?
Okay, that this is supposed to be fun,
but people people are dying off of dumb
stuff here. And uh they want to know
like how what you tripping on, bro. Like
um why you you flew here. You you're
spooking people out. How'd you feel
about this scene, man? And also uh how
how it ended and everything revealed
itself.
>> I love it, man. I like the way they're
doing this. Like you wouldn't think that
a kind of a murder mystery would fit a
comic book story, but the beauty of
comic book stories and how you bring in
other audiences is if you can tie you're
going to have the nerds. If you give us
the nerdy part, you can get us. But when
you add other things like uh murder,
mystery, romance, that humor, that type
thing, you get in novel people. And what
they're doing here is a Friday Night
Lights
uh mystery murder mystery right here we
got going on. And the only one who
thinks he knows that it's alien is
Howal. I really enjoyed the way John
Stewart behaved and conducted himself
because he's still following chain of
command. He wants to do things the right
way. He's green. He's wet behind the
ears. And he wants to go talk to the
sheriff and let her know, "Oh boy over
here, I done seen all this evidence."
And old boy over here knows something.
So I want you to know and how being the
old grizzled veteran who's lived life
and knows that trying to do the right
thing all the time ain't going to work.
Let's Mr. Green Stewart go down there
and do it. And you saw what happened.
Old boy runs. The sheriff got to run
with him. And then in the very end
Stewart used his brain to go around
popped old boy in the mouth. And I'mma
just go ahead and make my first
prediction. Be Avery.
>> What's that?
The guy we saw run has nothing to do
with these shootings. If anything, he
was mind controlled.
You pulling out the notepad.
Oh man, you know I keep the notebook
fresh and handy by the death. And I got
my black notebook since the our green
lantern is black. Got the black
notebook, ladies and gentlemen.
>> Y'all, if you didn't know, when Lamont
pulls out the notepad, even though I
encouraged him here, he's usually right.
It's it's he he has a crystal ball over
there. But we going to see. We going to
see. We got seven uh seven episodes to
go. Something that I did like right now
in this se in this sequence right here
is the score
>> when he was running doing the doing the
school. Um that caught my attention. Um
I really did like that. I probably
should have looked up who composed it,
but u great job there. Uh but we get
more of the origin of how um coming up
after this when these gentlemen are at
the bar. Uh, it's quite funny his plan
of I want to go to jail, so I'm gonna
get my ass whooped. So, I'm going to
play this annoying song 15,000 11
million times and get into a little bar
fight. But during this exchange between
them, uh we we got a little origin of
how um when a number of years ago he was
on base, the room started vibrating, a
bubble took him uh ever so many miles
away. And um he found Abinsur, the
purple pink u Green Lantern. Uh if you
are a comic nerd like us, you know who
that is. It would have been nice to
actually see this. Maybe we will later
on. Uh I don't want to jump to any
conclusions. Uh but if we don't, uh I
I'll still be okay. Um but I I again,
Lamont, I like how they addressed all of
this
in the first episode and we I don't even
think we're at the first 30 minutes yet,
you know. Uh and so a lot of lore, a lot
of backstory, a lot of origin. Um a very
effective storytelling. Uh mixing in the
comedy with with the fight um later on
as well. Oh, also now I'm I'm I'm I'm
going to let you go there. All right.
You you may you may take the lead on
that one. Um but h how are you feeling
about everything I just said? And uh
I'mma put a note in my my my end point
right there to bring another something
else up. But yeah, how how did you feel?
>> Loved it, man. Like [clears throat]
my fear with HBO sometimes is that when
they they start out kind of quiet
building the narrative on their shows on
their great shows and sometimes people
who are like big fans to the original
lure they kind of want you to get to the
meat and tats and the nut cut and quit
but if you are a fan of HBO series you
know that they tend to start out the
first couple of episodes building and
that's what they done here except for I
feel like from the norm. They're
building faster with this show with the
flashbacks and the time jumps and
everything that's going on now to we get
to this bar scene where John Howal knows
good and damn well that old boy that's
in jail knows something and he's going
to get himself trapped. He takes the
ring off so he can get beat up because
remember folks, that ring on your body
is almost like your white blood cells.
If something starts happening to you and
you unconscious, that ring will help you
out. Okay? They even mentioned John Hal
mentioned this is like one of the
strongest weapons in the universe,
whatever. And that's what that ring does
for you. And so he took it off to go get
beat up. But also during the end this
scene, folks, did y'all see how he made
counterfeit money? Now, is it real
counterfeit money if the minute you
decide to relinquish the thought, it
just disappears? Either way, you're
stealing because you stole the record
that you were supposed to pay for. So
you did steal that. So, don't make no
mistake, folks, in your data. He stole
that damn record. And when he got beat
up and the the stuff hit the fan, um,
and our boy John Stewart minded his
business
trying to be a good good Robin meets a
woman. Okay. And it was clear as day to
me from jump.
>> Number one, I can't trust that.
>> Uhhuh. Oh, it was clear for me. Number
one, we can't trust that broad cuz she's
asking too many questions. She's over
there asking like she's the damn
feds. And Steuart being green and wet
behind the ears is answering all her
damn questions. So that's a knock on
him. But then number two, I was like,
not only she asking questions, but look
at the way she's looking at him now.
She's a little older. Okay, folks. And
you know, we don't discriminate against
our geriatric population. You fine.
You're fine. Okay, we'll some of us
going to get them panty draws even if
they geriatric draws.
>> Get the draws.
>> John Stewart,
>> I said to myself at some point in time
he's going to get them draws. Lo and
behold,
>> very next scene he's in the geriatric
draws. Floor is yours, Bever.
>> Yeah, man. Um I I didn't see it coming.
Um and then when she was she was like,
"Can you walk me to my car?" I was like,
"Wait a minute." And then you know it
cuts to them in the truck. I was like,
"Wow." And what's also funny, she's
like, "You you going to give me a
lecture now?" Like I was like, "Damn."
He's [laughter] like, "No, man. I'm
I'mma give you a light, you know." Uh
it's crazy. Um she's obviously not
happy. Or maybe she is. People just live
live different lives. Uh because we find
out who she's related to uh a couple of
scenes later. Uh and that's funny right
there. I can't wait to um hear your your
um your commentary there. But that yeah,
um Hal is arrested. He goes to jail.
It's obvious to everybody what his plan
is. I like that. Um John showed up to
the sheriff office the next day. And the
cop knew that herself, just like, you
know, hey, um it's like he wanted to get
put in jail on purpose, so I put him
next to the person that he wanted to
talk to, you know, excuse me,
intentionally.
So again, I just say out to say I I like
uh Agent Carrie or whatever. She She's
cool. Um she's she's cool. She's cool.
Now, um we we're at court now. Okay. Um
we're trying to find out what's going to
happen to Hal and somebody springs him
out of jail. We end up meeting him. His
name is uh Will Min and goes to the
house. Now, for somebody to drop
$200,000 at the drop of a dime like
this, they're quite wealthy, Lamont.
>> Um they have an agenda. Um,
>> was the suspicions rising for you
initially when this mystery person with
just buttloads of cash popped out of
nowhere?
>> Um, or like what what what was your
thoughts? I'm curious.
>> Oh, of course. I mean, like, you know,
you know, I can't say Spidey senses cuz
we're talking about DC characters, but
you know, my bat tingles. My battle
rangs was tingling when he got, you
know, moved out of court for the
stepfather of the the lawyer, the dad,
the lawyer that the Let me get this
straight. So, first of all, we had a
lawyer pop in and that happens to be the
husband of the sheriff.
>> Correct.
>> And the person springing out, how Jordan
happens to be that lawyer's dad. And you
know immediately be Avery you know I
make lists of people that I don't trust
immediately I don't trust nobody in that
family and I don't trust someone who
we'll speak about later that I didn't
trust from the jump. The only one in
that household I trust is the sheriff.
Everybody else in that house I don't
trust. I don't know if they have been
corrupted by yellow energy. For those
that don't know, DC, yellow energy is
the ring of fear and um it was created
as a way to beat down the Guardians and
I think we've got some people injected
by Yellow Fear working on behalf of that
villain and we shall soon see.
>> Yes. And you know, we did see Sinestro
in the trailers. Um so that's that's
brewing up right there. Lamont, uh that
was a large body of land that they had
too, man. How many acres was that when
they pulled up?
Yeah, man. That was me. That was like
100 100,000 acres, which tells me that
which lets me further know that there's
something going on on that property.
Fenced in property. You got goons at the
gate be something is going on. Yeah,
something is going on up there that they
don't want us to know about.
>> And he's trying to get some information
out of the Green Lantern. So,
something's a foot.
>> Definitely something's a foot, man. Um,
you know, if you got land, bread,
militia like that, you know, tofu steaks
at random, you know, um, and you're
curious about um, being taken over, you
you you've been your people been the
bully for the longest, but you don't
want to be done to you, you know, saying
that there's thousands of planets out
there with intelligent life. I like how
was like, "Oh, it's pretty peaceful out
there." Well, if it's that that's the
case, why the hell space cops necessary?
So, uh, point taken right there. Yeah.
But he was like, he was like,
colonization, man, it's very bleak for
the people that's getting colonized. And
I don't, he don't want to get caught
with, um, the banana and the tailpipe.
But it's more than that, you know. It
it's maybe he teamed up with the evil
alien race, you know, thinking that he
was going to have some type of comeup
and it's not playing out the the way he
wanted, the way he anticipated, and he's
trying to save face in some way, shape,
form, or fashion.
>> I don't know. What's up?
>> Let's Let's throw a theory out there for
the audience,
>> okay? Since this is the Since this show
also pertains to the new gun DCU,
there's always a chance, folks. Now,
y'all, my comic book nerds, follow me,
regular audience. I try to clue you guys
in on this. There is a huge big villain
to Superman and the Justice League and a
lot of people in DC called Dark Side.
And dark side likes to take over um
planets. And when he does take over a
planet, he terraforms them. He puts
these giant holes in the ground that go
to the middle of that planet's core and
it spits out fire.
>> Could this man be working with Dark Side
and have all that land? because that's
going to be one of the places where he's
going to use to terraform our planet.
>> You know, cuz Dark Side has often got
little minions that work on Earth. Mr.
Mannheim for
>> Yep. and parody demons. And he also has
minions such as Mr. Mannheim set Earth
up for his arrival. Make it weak. And
that could be what we're seeing right
here. The Lanners have had to deal with
Dark Sign in the past. So, we could be
seeing that as a villain, too.
>> We could be. I am entropy. I am death. I
am dark side. Yeah. Oh, I can't wait to
see uh Gun's iteration of um of of dark
side. That would be amazing. That that
would be amazing. Uh but you know, he's
like uh hey, Will is like making us
like, "Hey, how I just want to make sure
that you know we on the same page." And
you know, um but he's like, "I don't
know if we're what page wrong." and he's
like, I'm I'm just trying to protect
Earth from people that wasn't born on
it, you know? And so that's fair, that's
commendable, that's respectable. Uh but
it's also vague at the same time. But
riddle me this, bro.
This dude ended up smashing old old
dude's wife and he knew about it. He had
he said those words like it ain't
nothing like eating off another man's
grill. I was like, damn, how does that
even how did he even find out? What is
going to be the repercussions of this
Lamont of of how not how but John
smashing Will's wife? And then the joke
that how it was funny. I laughed like
damn, we ain't even been here for 24
hours and you already smashing people's
wives. I'm impressed. What What's going
is is is this going to blow up in his
face or or it's not going to come up
again?
Well, how can it blow up in John
Stewart's face when the wife didn't tell
John Stewart? So, if a conversation is
ever had, you can't blame him. He didn't
know. But the fact that
>> the husband knows so quickly tells me
that this was wanted. He wanted this to
happen. Um, this is this is not
corporate espionage. This is
intergalactic espionage
be because he's trying to find a
weakness.
>> It's easy to know what how Jordan's
weakness is, but John Stewart is the new
lantern and they want to know what his
weakness is and potentially Hanny draws
is his weakness. Now, mind you folks, in
the comics,
John Stewart, he bangs some bodies, but
his but the person that made him fall in
love was Shy, better known as Hulk Girl.
And boy, the DCU has one of the finest
women on planet Earth playing Hawk Girl.
So, I can't wait to see that little
relationship start to play out. But to
for him to know that quick be able she
just got home.
I mean, unless unless she called him,
which she could have, I think that there
is some telekinesis going on. This is
all a crap. This was planted. This was
meant to happen. And I don't trust
nobody at that ranch except for the
sheriff.
>> Okay. All right. Y'all let us know what
y'all think. Uh, is this going to come
back and bite John in the butt or no big
deal at all? But out of all of this,
man, they worked it out to where the
sheriff is going to allow Hal to talk to
the supposed the alleged alien, you
know, at the police station. And he goes
in there and uh yeah, man, he's a good
interrogator, man. Um the way he's
drilling them, it makes sense. Like,
okay, yeah, you're you're learning all
these specific facts, the first
paragraph of Wikipedia, but you don't
know the culture cuz everybody should
know about Harry Potter briefly. And you
know, Obama was the 44th president after
George Bush and there's controversy
about his uh his citizenship, you know,
like what? Who talks like that?
Especially the way you look, you know.
Uh but he was going to get out of there.
Hey man, I'm going to blow this place up
if he don't let me walk. He was right
the whole time. I'm an alien. I you I
know about your ring. I know about the
little song y'all sing to power up and
all of this. You know, I got plans, man.
And you messing them up. Okay.
and say, "So, you want to throw a gear a
wrench in my gear, man? I'm just going
to blow the whole place up. You don't
know if I'm going to blow up this room
or the whole town." But how I got to
say, "I told you so." Thoughts, Lamont?
Thoughts?
I was happy because I knew he was right.
Um, you know, everybody else wanted to
try to play this story as if he don't
know what he's talking about. He's been
a Green Lantern since the 80s. It's
2020. It's 2016 now. This man has been
saving y'all this long. He's never had
an incident of going rogue. He's never
had an incident of going bad. He's done
nothing but stick his neck out for
y'all. And y'all don't want to give this
man a benefit of a doubt.
>> Yeah.
>> I was happy this happened. I was happy
that he was proven to be right. And now
I just can't wait to see what the next
steps is going to be.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Um Tick and Tom Bomb blew
him up. Contained it. I like that he
contained it with a shield, but then
went over there and tried to uh use more
of his energy, more of his will uh to
make sure that it didn't explode and
expand. And that I I like the effects
there. Um and that was the most in the
episode that we saw of the green CGI,
the green constructs that they make from
Will. Um
my one criticism about the show so far
is I do wish it was more green. Uh do
you agree, disagree? How do you feel
about the constructs that we got in the
first episode?
>> Because the storytelling was so good, I
am fine with the minimal amount of
constructs they did. I think they stuck
enough in there. Enough in there to let
us know that, hey,
>> comic book fans, we ain't forgot about
y'all. We ain't forgot. And I I gotta
say, behavior, these constructs,
maybe they decide to put the budget on
higher quality, but they look really
really good. Um, when they did show some
stuff like the soda opener he did, the
dollar he made from just what you got
finished talking about, they all look
high quality like it could be something
that happened in real life. And so for
now, behavior, just this first episode,
I'm okay with the balance.
>> Gotcha. Gotcha. Okay. Appreciate you.
Appreciate you. Um, but yeah, man. All
this took place in 2016, but then we
jump forward to 2026, present day,
>> and John pulls up 10. He he been in the
game for 10 years, man. He's a pro pron
now, a vet, an expert. But he pulls up
on Hal Jordan. Not only is he dead, but
he's frozen outside with a bloody face.
Lamont, what gives? Bro, what's going
on,
bro? I was thinking, are we really going
comic book arc here? how are we doing
this? And just I was thinking like how
does this tie to the DCU? Now mind you,
DCU is 2026 2027. So some of the events
of Superman's movie have happened now.
And so I'm trying to figure out how does
that tie into what we John Stewart is
seeing in a more galactic universe. But
I was thinking to myself, okay, how much
of this particular year are they going
to give us? And do we have to wait until
the very end? Because now we've got two
murder mysteries going on here. And I'm
I'm ready to see them both. That's what
I was thinking.
>> Yeah, I am curious with the timeline. Uh
cuz I'm assuming Superman, you know,
that was in 2025.
Supergirl came out 2026. This is 2026
now as well. So, you know, Green Lantern
and Superman Supergirl should be
crossing paths in some way, shape, or
form,
>> right? And Superman has to know about
Green Lantern because he's been here
since the 80s and 90s. Everybody else
knows about him. So why wouldn't
Superman so?
>> Well, he knows he knows about Guy
Gardner. Superman.
>> That's true. Yeah. Guy Gardner. And God
Gardner is going to pop up. He was in
Yeah. Yeah. You're right. I'm I'm
tripping. I forgot all about that. So
I'm I'm also I'm kind of curious
because this is 2026. So maybe No,
that's 2025. So where was Hal doing the
Superman movie?
He might have been intergalactic because
um James Gun came out and said that when
you see John Stewart in 2026, that is
the year in their story, that is the
year that Superman made his his drop on
Earth, 2026. Even though the movie came
out in 25,
>> he's saying that the the origins of that
Superman movie are 2026 moving into
2027. Okay. Yeah, cuz this how our show
could take place. So, you saying this
how a show could take place before the
events of Superman movie? Um, that's
possible, too. Okay. Okay. Uh, you have
any final thoughts, sir?
>> Fantastic. People, hang in there, folks.
HBO when they shoot, they don't miss.
Y'all see me and be able review Penguin,
and it kind of, even though I felt like
the first episode of Penguin was great,
there were some people like, when is it
going to pick up? Bear with it, folks.
Penguin won an Emmy, so this could be
the Emmy winning show as well. Just bear
with it.
>> Yeah, I really enjoyed myself. Um, I'm
looking forward to seeing what happened
next. What happens next? Um,
yeah. So, subscribe. Let us know what
you think, guys. Thank y'all so much for
