Video summary

Dr. Yogesh Kamat from KMC Hospital Mangaluru explains that knee pain treatment must be highly personalized rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach found on the internet or through general advice. He notes that patients often face a confusing array of options ranging from oil massages and stem cell injections to keyhole surgery and full knee replacements. The core message is that every patient is unique, meaning the appropriate treatment depends heavily on factors like age, the specific cause of pain, and the duration of the condition. For instance, a twenty-five-year-old suffering from swelling likely has issues related to ligament injuries or localized cartilage damage, whereas a sixty-five-year-old with chronic swelling for six months is dealing with severe arthritis that requires a different strategy. The doctor clarifies that arthritis is essentially the wearing out of the cartilage coating on the knee, which acts as a shock absorber. In younger individuals, pain is frequently caused by these specific injuries or surface damage to the cartilage, conditions that can often be reversed through keyhole surgery, ligament repair, or stem cell treatments combined with injections. However, he emphasizes that this minimally invasive approach has limitations for older patients who suffer from severe arthritis or have legs that are permanently bent due to joint destruction. In these advanced stages, performing injections is considered unscientific and could potentially worsen the condition, as keyhole surgery cannot restore function when the structural integrity of the knee is too compromised. Ultimately, Dr. Kamat asserts that knee replacement surgery remains a highly effective solution when indicated correctly for patients who are motivated to undergo the procedure. When performed under the right circumstances, it allows individuals to achieve their desired quality of life and mobility. His conclusion encourages patients to take charge of their own health by understanding the specific nature of their problem rather than blindly following popular trends. He advises seeking consultation with a qualified specialist to discuss the scientifically proven options available, ensuring that the chosen path aligns with the patient's age, condition severity, and personal goals for recovery.

Hi, I'm Dr. Yogish Kamat. I am a hip and knee specialist and I am at KMC Hospital Joti in Mangalore where I have uh a team uh comprising the comprehensive specialist center for hip and knee care. Now people come to us exclusively for knee problems. And uh when people have pain and arthritis in their knee, they are shot with with multiple options of treatment when they talk to different people or more so look at the internet. Everything from oil massages to knee replacement surgery, keyhole surgery, stem cell injections and the like. Now we must understand here that all patients are not alike. People with knee pain are not necessarily having knee pain at the same age and every aspect of this must be customized. It is not that treatment for a swelling and knee injury in a 25 year old is going to be the same as treatment for swelling which has been there for 6 months continuously in a 65 year old. Arthritis can be of various grades. You arthritis is basically the coating of your knee wearing out. It is the cartilage wearing out. Now behind me in the picture you can see various people who are doing various activities. Young people would have pain less because of arthritis and more because of ligament injuries or particular surface damage to the cartilage. Now all that can be reversed with keyhole surgery. that is taking care of ligaments, taking care of shock absorbing cartilagages or stem cell treatments for their knees along with injections. Older people who have severe arthritis or whose legs are bent will never scientifically recover with keyhole surgery. They can manage with exercises but in those stages it is very unscientific to do injections because they can make matters worse. Keyhole surgery will not benefit those situations. You have to do something which is scientifically proven or elect not to do anything at all. Knee replacement surgery works very well in the right indication. When somebody is motivated to have it, if they undergo it properly, they can achieve their desired quality of life. So at the end of the day, take charge of your problem, understand it properly and discuss it with the right specialist in order to get a good result.
