quiet, often overlooked.
But bees, especially native bees, are
among the most important creatures on
the planet.
Every time a bee visits a flower, it's
not just collecting nectar. It's helping
a plant reproduce,
passing pollen from one bloom to
another, and making fruit, seeds, and
new life possible.
Bees, along with other pollinators, make
one out of every three bites of food we
eat possible.
From apples and almonds to tomatoes and
coffee.
And they thrive in one type of habitat
above all others,
native grasslands. [music]
Wildflower-rich prairies that once
covered millions of acres in North
America.
But we've erased most of that land.
Agriculture, development, and woody
encroachment have replaced [music]
diverse native prairies.
And bees are disappearing with them.
More than 40% of pollinators, [music]
especially native bee species, are now
highly threatened.
Thousands are vanishing, many before
they're even studied or named.
Without [music] native grasslands, bees
lose their food, their shelter, their
nesting grounds.
And without bees,
we risk losing the very systems [music]
that feed us.
But there's still time.
When we protect and restore native
prairies, [music] bees come back.
Even small patches of wildflowers can
make a difference.
Bees don't ask for much, just a place
[music] to forage, nest, and keep
pollinating the world.
They've been doing it for millions of
years.
Let's not let them disappear on our
watch.
Because when we lose the bees, we lose
far more than we imagine.
>> If you don't mess things up in the first
place,
uh
they really [music] will take off by
themselves. And it has to do with our
grazing management. You you aren't uh
beating the plants continuously, and uh
you you allow them to bloom, give those
plants rest so that uh
the pollinators will will have plants to
go to for food.
>> You move [music] the cattle so
frequently that they're only on a
paddock for maybe 3 to 7 days for the
entire year. [music] And so, those
blooming plants are always within close
enough proximity.
There are like 1,400 [music] species of
native bees in North America, and like
80 species of ladybugs in South Dakota.
And they are all a part of this
beautiful ecosystem and dependent upon
the survival of this ecosystem. [music]
The ecosystem needs the grazing animals.
The grazing animals need the grass.
And we just get to carefully observe
them and follow the the natural
principles and um
try not to mess it up.

butterflies. If the
bees disappeared, we would lose the
flowers.

like every other pollinator.

grow and make it healthier.
