Balancing the demands of writing a thesis, publishing papers, and securing employment is a common challenge for graduate students, yet Jennifer found support within a collaborative community where peers could share career plans and learn together. She notes that without programs like BTP, many scientists might not realize the variety of non-traditional roles available to them outside of academia or standard industrial labs. The program helped her understand that scientific training opens doors to diverse fields, encouraging students to explore options they might have previously overlooked.
Now signed for a management consulting position, Jennifer is eager to apply her unique blend of wet lab and computational skills in a completely new environment where she can learn continuously. She expresses excitement about being thrown into fresh challenges and relearning concepts in different contexts, viewing this transition as a natural progression rather than a departure from her scientific roots. Her story serves as an inspiring example of how structured training programs and supportive communities can empower students to navigate complex career landscapes and pursue paths that align with their evolving interests and strengths.

When I interviewed for grad school, I
was like, I want to work with bacteria.
Bacteria grow quickly, right? I can set
something in overnight and the next day
it's good to go. I really liked that
kind of pace.
In my thesis project, there's the lab
work and the back end of it has been
like a lot of data analysis. I realized
I enjoyed learning how to do more
computational things, learning how to
make vector graphic images, learning how
to look at sequencing data and parse it
out and find interesting things in all
of that data. I did an internship in
government through the biotechnology
training program. I was working in San
Antonio at an Air Force research lab
studying cell membranes and the effect
of like directed energy on those cell
membranes. BTP has a lot of connections
with people in industry which helps
folks get internships that they either
didn't know or wouldn't have access to
without it. Having that experience
helped me apply for a position where
they want a broader skill set and and a
broader experience and that's incredibly
helpful. I know that people kind of
struggle a little bit with like I have
to write my thesis, write my papers, and
get a job all at the same time. Graduate
students here at WMadison go to all
sorts of different places after they
graduate. I signed for a management
consulting position. I'm pretty excited
to just be like thrown into something
new and get to learn things all over
again. Without BTP, I don't think I
would even realize that scientists can
go into these other positions. Being in
like a community where everyone can kind
of learn together and like figure out
career plans together is is really nice.
