JANA GANA MANA Movie Reaction 3/3!! | Prithviraj SukumaranSuraj | Venjaramoodu
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video features a detailed reaction and critique of the Malayalam film *Jana Gana Mana*, focusing on its complex narrative structure and thematic messaging regarding systemic corruption and justice. The reviewers acknowledge that the movie successfully conveys a powerful message about fighting against a flawed system, particularly in the first third where it effectively unpacks the story of innocent victims and the initial pursuit of justice by a cop who takes matters into his own hands. However, they express significant dissatisfaction with the film's conclusion, arguing that the ending becomes overly convoluted and repetitive, essentially rehashing points that were already established earlier in the runtime. They feel that the final act attempts to tie together too many disparate storylines involving politicians, media manipulation, and personal vendettas, which ultimately dilutes the core message rather than strengthening it.
A major point of contention for the reviewers is the film's reliance on excessive melodrama and unrealistic courtroom logic, which detracts from the grounded reality of the drama they hoped to see. They criticize the script for introducing unnecessary twists, such as flipping the protagonist's character from a hero to a villain and back again, which they view as illogical and emotionally manipulative rather than narratively sound. Additionally, the portrayal of antagonists is described as one-dimensional and simplistic, reducing complex political figures to mere caricatures of evil who laugh maniacally at crimes, a trope that feels more appropriate for cartoons than a serious drama about real-world injustices. The reviewers argue that these stylistic choices prevent the film from fully landing its emotional impact on the audience, making the experience feel shallow despite the validity of the underlying social issues it addresses.
Despite these criticisms, the reviewers concede that there are elements of the film they genuinely enjoyed, including the performances of the lead actors and certain aspects of the cinematography. They appreciate how the movie initially engages the audience with a compelling story about corruption on a college campus and the struggle for justice, noting that the acting was strong enough to carry the weight of the narrative even when the direction faltered. The discussion highlights a divide between the film's effectiveness as an emotional piece for mass audiences versus its structural flaws from a critical perspective; while the movie resonated deeply with many viewers in Kerala, the reviewers feel it could have been significantly more impactful if edited down to two hours and scored with less dramatic flair. Ultimately, they conclude that while the heart of the story is strong, the execution in the final act undermines the potential power of the film's message about truth and heroism.

>> So, lots to say here. Um,
overall, uh, there's a lot I liked about
the movie in terms of its messaging and,
uh, the way it unweaved for at least for
the first third at least, three fours. I
really didn't like the end of them
wrapping everything up like a thousand
times in the end, you know, like this
and this and this and that's why they
did everything that I I just don't like
those kind of endings. So I I really the
last 20 25 minutes I I was like okay
let's we don't need another twist we we
we already made our point right
>> yeah [laughter]
>> right uh I do have a lot of issues with
the style of the film making for sure
way too overdramatic um which is not
typical of the malam industry no uh so
it's it's it's quite a different take it
was a very popular movie I know it did
very very well I'm sure it's very
emotional for a lot of Indians malis
that know these stories
and real things that obviously happen
like this. Um, but in terms of like my
biggest issues um, with it and I don't
really have an issue with like how they
presented it. I actually liked how they
presented it. They started with here's
the story. I there's there's evidence
against these guys, right? We're all
against these rapists. We all want to
kill rapists, right? Blah blah blah. And
then they kind of unweaved it all there.
I think the strongest part of the movie
is probably in the courtroom with Perth
Raj
>> uh, and all that kind of stuff. Um, but
then, uh, it got really convoluted after
that, um, for sure. And then just kind
of like the really over dramaticizing,
sometimes too heavy-handedness as well,
um, during it. So, it was it was it was
very mixed towards the end. I didn't
like the end really at all. Um, but it
was overall a mix that I like the
message, but I don't think it fully
landed for me. What about you?
>> Yeah, I agree with everything you said.
>> Yeah.
>> Um,
>> there was there was
The run time could have been cut a lot.
Um, we had moments where we had songs we
didn't need. It didn't do anything to
propel the narrative forward. It
actually bogged it down.
>> We did not need to revisit moments that
we've already experienced. Like when he
killed the guys, there was nothing about
it
>> is all I saw was we're going for an
emotion grab to make you feel so bad for
these young guys that shouldn't have
been killed, which we already know they
were innocent guys that got used.
>> Yeah.
>> It was redundant. and then trying to
make it this much
>> complex story.
>> Yeah. At the end for sure
>> just was convoluted. It was just and
there were there were
>> I agree there were moments with acting
and moments with story that were just
trying to they were just setting aside
logic and just trying to pull to pull
the emotion in.
>> Yeah. And I get that that for a lot of
like the big mass Indians it works. I
know this movie did very very well. It's
It's a lot of people. It's been
requested for a long time.
>> Yeah. Sorry to disappoint you if you
were thinking hoping we'd like it.
>> Well, I I there's elements that I did
really really enjoy. Like I like the
story of it obviously, but as a full
thing obviously it falls short for sure,
but that like like I said the first
third, not that I loved everything in
the first third, but uh I mean three for
four is what I mean first three4s, not
third. Um
I really enjoyed how they kind of
unpacked it. Um and it was like oh okay
oh okay cool even though there was
obviously issues that I had with the
film making and the over dramaticness of
it but I still enjoyed that aspect of it
and then like you said I don't know if
it's the last 20 minutes last 30 minutes
whatever it was that they were like
>> oh it was this much bigger thing Priy is
coming for vengeance I'm like you didn't
need that that's not at all
>> the crux of the story is going up
against a system and the masses of you
you know, um, selective outrage and
those are all valid points to be made.
Yeah. Um, and there's a lot of valid
points this movie did make, um, to where
like they led you in the direction of
like, oh my god, this this cop was just
trying to, you know, take it into his
own hands. The systems, you know, women
over all the time with, you know,
getting raped and molested and they they
don't ever get justice. He was taking
justice into his own hands. So, they
kind of led the audience on in that way.
um leading you to believe it's one of
those stories and then pulling the rug
out from you. No issues with that. Um
[snorts] but obviously the farther they
went along and it ended about 5,000
times.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh in the end it really kind of it takes
away from the point that I felt like it
was making.
>> Well, and it started to try to cover way
too many story lines. I when the movie
began,
I was believing what was going on and I
was caring about what happened to the
girl. I was caring about the other girl
who stood up for her. I was caring about
the injustices that were happening on
the college campus and the fact that
there was corruption politically. And
then it just became so many different
things that we're being told we have to
care about that I just I stopped caring.
And I also didn't like the really
one-dimensional portrayal of the bad
guys. It was just
>> for sure
>> politicians are evil and they do things
because they're evil. It just was too
simplistic.
>> Yeah. Even if those facts are true like
about a lot more
Nobody just does something cuz they're
evil.
>> You don't want, especially in a film,
you don't want to make a character just
seem like a shtick.
>> Yeah. And actually smirk as they run her
over. Come on.
>> Like the evil laughing. I mean, it works
in 1980s with Mumbo because it's [ __ ]
Mumbo, right?
>> Right. [laughter] Right. Or Ren and
Stimpy trying, but if you're trying to
tell me a real story, a real drama, it
comes across as very shallow.
>> Yeah. Especially with the villain roles.
I I agree. They like the the laughing in
the background and uh
>> and the reason Well, why are we doing
this? Because this is the game of
politics.
>> Okay. Um, so there was, like I said, I
think you could probably take this
entire movie and cut it and score it in
a different way. Not that I didn't think
um, Jake Joy did a good job with the
score because I do. I'm saying the
overdramaticness that they put on
certain moments,
>> correct,
>> of the film, right?
>> Um, like I think you could cut it and
make it a lot more grounded. Uh, not
that it wasn't grounded in a lot of
acts, but there was a lot of elements
that like like those that you could put
and make it into a two-hour movie and be
a lot more impactful.
>> Absolutely. And as much as I enjoyed
Priy Rogers's uh monologues
>> and the courtroom stuff he was
presenting, there was so much about it
that when the other attorney was
objecting or the judge was objecting,
it's like I know I'm not an attorney,
but this is just why in the world would
anybody have why are you even objecting
to this? This just doesn't make any
logical sense as to why you can't
present that here. That's not something
that we can say just because it doesn't
align with your argument. It just again,
I didn't care. It didn't make sense. And
there were two men. We went from what
was, you know, it's one thing to have a
story that you're going to bring a twist
and you're going to go, "Oh my goodness,
he the guy we thought was a good cop is
actually a bad cop and do maybe two or
three of those things." But it was like
it became about
the the mother is just not g, you know,
she just jumped on the media bandwagon.
So it's a story about the media and the
problems of the media and then it turns
into the problems it has with the
politicians at the school connected with
the politicians of the region. that it's
Priy Raj who actually by the way Priy
Raj was abused by the system back then
and we're going to go back to his abuse
system which was connected to the cop
who's bad. It just was like golly gee
stop.
>> Even if all those things are true, it's
it gets really convoluted.
>> Convoluted
>> and not focus. It seems not focused
enough.
>> Yeah.
>> Um in in those aspect and then obviously
like the cop he was a good guy and then
we were like, "Oh no, he's a bad guy."
Oh, then he's a good guy. Good guy. And
I was like, you didn't need that.
[laughter]
>> No, you didn't need it at all.
>> There's bad cops.
>> Yeah. Just make it like he was follow
you could even just like he was
following orders. Even if he was
reluctant, he still followed orders.
There's cops that do that. Correct. You
don't need to give him this arc of
>> in the end he he really tried to bring
down the system even though he was part
of the system and like [laughter]
>> he tried to bring down the system that
he was a part of and that he was a part
of a system that he tried to bring down
>> but also Priy Roger was doing that as
well. like
>> um [laughter] so like it gets really in
in an end like I don't like endings that
just like oh this happened this happened
this happened and this is how we and
then this and then two years later that
>> right
>> it gets like two years later and six
months before the two years later
>> I think your point was made way before
that and it could have made been a lot
stronger I don't need a hero moments
from these people
>> no
>> the hero are the people uh that are that
are supposed to the hero is supposed to
be truth.
>> That's what the hero is supposed to be.
>> Yeah. Even though obviously I get what
you're saying. His like he was abused by
the system blah blah blah. But I didn't
need all that. I needed the
>> the I feel like the hero in this is
hopefully getting justice and the people
standing up for what they believe in and
and um you know uh if they see
injustices. I think what was that line
that's that was on the board for Gandhi
was like the best politics or the right
action or something like that. Right.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um, I I feel like
that's the hero of the story, right? It
should be the hero of the story.
>> No. And how do you have somebody like
the other attorney who was the the the
the one who was the defense attorney?
>> Yeah.
>> How do you not know that your primary
your only witness
has no credibility to what he's saying?
>> Like, how do you not know when he gets
up there that Priy Rogers is going to be
able to ask him two questions and
there's going to be no more evidence to
support that witness? that those were
just some of the things that just
strained credul throughout for me too.
So yeah.
>> And like
>> I don't want to pretend like this is
like all bad. There were I like I said
there was a lot of stuff that I did
enjoy
>> uh and performances that I enjoyed. Priy
Raj and and and I always forget his
name. I I like him as an actor.
We we see him a lot. I like him as an
actor. um both of them and I thought
they give good performances and I
thought there were other supporting
actors that give and then I thought
there's other supporting actors that
were probably told to do certain things
that I didn't
>> like so much and there were some
especially early on there were some very
good cinematography
>> uh selections and shots that were really
nice
>> and like I said overall I get the
message of the movie I just uh wish it
was done cinematically in a much
different way um because I think that
would have been a much stronger
>> point to make in a movie Um, and a lot
of you might disagree with them. That's
