I chose to study folates because of its
history. It was discovered in my
hometown of Mumbai, India [music]
by a scientist whose name is Lucy Wills.
It is one of the only vitamins that was
[music] discovered by a woman and she
discovered that women in India were
malnourished for folates. So, women were
having miscarriages or children that
were born with severe developmental
disabilities because they lacked this
vital micronutrient in their diet.
Folate research has shown that levels of
folate in blood can associate with a
variety of diseases. [music]
Folates are critical micronutrients
and despite being [music] so important,
they are critically understudied. Nobody
had actually studied how much folate are
we actually getting from our gut
microbes.
By studying what is the role of the gut
microbiome in metabolizing [music]
or consuming these dietary
micronutrients, we can try to understand
why supplementation [music]
of folate in the diet does not always
lead to improvements in folate
deficiencies. I think getting down
[music] to studying the individual
microbes, do their abundances change
even in an individual as they age or,
you [music] know, depending on their
lifestyle changes, their environmental
changes, if their microbiota shifts,
does that also [music]
require a shift in dietary consumption
of micronutrients or macronutrients
[music]
is something that we still don't know
and it warrants further investigation.
