I Went To The Mahoning Drive-In For Twin Peaks!

Thanks for checking out this video. So, I went to the Mahoning Drive-In in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, and I had gone last year once for the very first time I'd ever been there. Had a wonderful time. I believe I did a video then. I did not check my channel. Some Someone can verify that, but um I wanted to do a video on this one because I had a blast. Um there were there were a few issues that I will kind of go over, but for the most part it was a blast. I think the Mahoning does really cool stuff, but I'll kind of get into sequential or chronologically kind of how things went with with me going there, but it was a Twin Peaks event, and they had it was a Friday and a Saturday night. I ended up going on the Friday night. On the Saturday night they would were having a band F U Tammy that was starting things off, and then they showed um uh Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me, David Lynch movie, and then after that they showed uh Twin Peaks the pilot episode, uh which is a really good time. I love Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks is my favorite TV show of all time. I love it. My wife has watched it with me, and she's currently in the process of doing a rewatch with me. So, when this one came up, I was like, uh we got to go. And we were planning on going to visit Jim Thorpe in Pennsylvania anyway because my mother-in-law really wanted to go see the uh Fleetwood Mac uh tribute band Tusk, which we went to that as well. That was the night after the Mahoning, and that was actually a really good time. Uh they do an amazing job. But this is about the Mahoning. >> [snorts] >> So, we first get there, and we're getting onto the lot, and I see Virgil, who's one of the owners, and he runs the podcast for the Mahoning Drive-In, which I don't know if people know that there is a podcast for that. If you haven't been listening to it, and you like the Mahoning, and you just like drive-ins, I think it's well worth listening to that podcast. I love it. I think it's phenomenal. They'll do They do episodes where they're kind of like hyping up shows that are coming up and kind of talking about the work that went into those shows and what are planned for them and then they'll also do like an overview for each month of what's coming up to kind of get you hyped up, but then they also do these interviews with other people who own and run um drive-ins throughout the United States and that is super super fun, but it creates the problem for me of me then being like, "Ah, now I need to like plan a trip to go to these other drive-ins cuz they sound so cool." Cuz I'm just a drive-in person, but um yeah, so I saw Virgil when we were coming in and my wife had rolled down her her window because he was kind of like directing traffic of where you can park. And so I had to yell at him. I was just like, "I love the podcast." He was like, "Oh, thanks, fam." So it was really cool to be able to just let him hear my appreciation for the podcast, so that was great. Uh but he was very busy. I saw him extremely busy during during the uh whole event. So first thing, my wife and I get parked and we're just going to walk around cuz she'd never been there before. When I went last year it was with my my good buddy Rich. Uh shout out to Rich. We need to go again and I want to go one more time this year before their season's over. So went to the merch first uh and they also had vendors. We hit the vendors after the merch. So we went to the merch first and it's a good thing we did because the t-shirts that they have, a lot of times they'll do specific t-shirts for each of their events um or the bigger ones at least and they um were selling out of some of the sizes. So I got the shirt I really wanted. It looks phenomenal. Everyone I've shown this to has been like, "Oh, that looks really good." It's burgundy with like a red design on it and it is calling out the actual event. Uh see as you can see it's David Lynch's face and it's Sheryl Lee, who plays Laura Palmer's face, and then it has the information at the bottom about what when the event was, what they were calling it, and, you know, what it involved. It's The Wild Wild World of David Lynch, and they do that each year. They do like a Wild World of David Lynch showing. It's I don't think it's always like a Twin Peaks thing. Uh, but then it tells you what it what was playing each night. It doesn't have the band listed, but it has like the film and the pilot episode and the dates. And it just looks so good. Like, I love the red on the burgundy, and I don't have many shirts like this. Actually, the only other shirt that is this color is a Mahoning Drive-In shirt that I got last year. So, sticking with the theme. And then on the back is just their logo, Mahoning Drive-In, which I love. I think it looks phenomenal. So, I'm very stoked to have this shirt and to be wearing it. So, love that. Then, my wife and I went and hit the vendors. And there's a range of stuff. There were like oils that people were making. There were soaps. There were posters. There were movies. It just artwork. There's so much stuff, and obviously a lot of the vendors had Twin Peaks related things. Uh, like Twin Peaks artwork. There were a lot of really great pieces of artwork. And there was a jewelry maker there, and my wife actually bought, I don't actually have it to show, but my wife bought these uh, earrings that were little like gold-colored bees. And they were really tiny, but they were really detailed and really cool-looking. So, she really liked those. So, she has some cool bee earrings uh, to to wear now. And I'm glad she found something to buy there because she was excited to to to see the drive-in, but like it it's not her favorite thing to like go to like a David Lynch, you know, themed celebration, basically. Uh, but she thought it was really cool to like see all the people who were kind of coming there for the same thing and it was a real sense of community like it usually is with these Mahoning showings and it was just cool to see like all the tattoos people had from Twin Peaks. My wife really liked drawing those to my attention. Was just like, "Look at that one. I know what that reference is and I know what that reference is and look at that cool shirt and look at that person with a with like a skirt that had the design of the carpet in the red room." And that's another thing. They set up little photo op areas including a red room photo op area and my wife and I sat sat there and like did a selfie together so you could see enough of the red room. So there we are in the red room, super fun. So I love that and then we got in line to meet some of the celebrities because James Marshall was supposed to show up who plays James in Twin Peaks but he ended up having to cancel cuz I believe he got sick but they had Michael Horse who plays Hawk in the show. They had um, Dana Ashbrook who plays Bobby and they had Sheryl Lee who plays Laura Palmer. So we got in line to get up to the the tent eventually to get autographs and it was very slow, very slow moving for the the autograph line unfortunately and people were getting kind of agitated with it. There were people who were like leaving the line like literally the two people in front of my wife and I and the two people behind us left at some point. Just like straight up were like, "Forget this." and left and that kind of sucks. I thought about it at one point but my wife was like, "No, you got to stick with it." cuz we ended up waiting over 3 and 1/2 hours in that line which is wild. The last time or the only other time I've waited that length to meet someone celebrity wise, well, anyone really, was uh, George A. Romero and this was many, many years ago. This was like early 2000s when I met him, and I was in line for about that long. So, George A. Romero and Twin Peaks people. So, pretty much everyone was going to meet Sheryl Lee, and then some people were meeting Dana, and some people were meeting Michael. Um so, where they had it situated was kind of problematic because at one point they needed to tell everyone to try and move the line out a little bit because the line went right in front of people's cars. So, there were people sitting in their cars trying to watch the movie, and they can't because there bodies in front of them. There are people just standing there. So, that was a bit problematic, and then just how slow the line was moving. And it it's one of these things where like I wanted it to move faster, but I also got it that like the celebrities were taking their time with people and creating like really memorable moments, which is great because like when I got there, that's what I wanted. Like I wanted to be able to like connect with these people and like ask them questions, and kind of take my time. But at the same time, I do think they probably should have had someone there to kind of like encourage moving a little bit faster. I know they do that at horror conventions. But again, you know, like the the special aspect of it. So, like waiting that long was rough for me at first, but then the next day, I was kind of like I'm glad I did it because of what I got and the memory. So, I'll I'll show you and and tell you what I got. So, obviously, I went for Sheryl Lee because Laura Palmer, obviously. And you know, my wife even said, she's like, "This is the picture you have to get signed. It's so iconic. It's literally how the show starts is her body being found." So, she just did, you know, two Carlin and then signed um Sheryl Lee. So, I asked her I was like to have like at least a question or a comment uh for the celebrities so they can interact with me somewhat. So, I asked her about, you know, what her thought was on the show and what the show would be when she read the script and she said, "I never read a script because she just did a small part initially for the pilot which was a dead body in essence." It was really quick. She didn't She wasn't on set a whole lot. Um I think it was just like one day and then she's like, "Okay, dead body. That's it." And then she said she got a call from David Lynch some sometime later. I'm going to put this down for now. Sometime later she got a call and he was just like, "How How would you like to be involved in the show? Like come back for episodes." And she's like, "Isn't my character dead?" And he said, "Let me worry about that. I'll figure something out. Just say yes." And she was like, "Well, yeah. I mean, work with David Lynch and like work on a show that's going to be on television. Yeah, obviously." So, that was kind of what what I talked to her about and it was really cool. And she was very gracious and very very nice. So, then I did not meet my but I did go and meet Dana and and the reason is, you know, I'm trying to like budget because the just the autographs was 60 a piece. So, 60 for Sheryl and I met Dana Ashbrook and that was also 60. And then I think it was if you wanted just a picture with them, it was 50. And if you wanted the combo of autograph and picture, it was 80. So, I just went for the autographs cuz that's what I care about the most cuz then otherwise memories I have. Plus the other issue is that as it like during the day, not a problem for the photos, but it started getting dark and they didn't have enough lighting for the photos to really come out great. So, if people were taking photos with the celebrities, it's not going to look the best, honestly, when it was darker. So, that kind of was a little problematic. So, anyway, so I met Dana. Uh had to get this one signed and he said, "To Carlin, "Uh it's in the trees." Obviously a quote from the show. And Whoa. And here's the thing. I always think about the character of Bobby with Shelly because they have so many scenes together, and I just love how they are as characters together. Bobby is my favorite character in the show. Um not the movie because he's way less in the movie, but in the show is my favorite, and it's because of Dana's expressive nature of his acting. It's my favorite performance. Love love love the performance. Um It's just such an interesting character because he starts out being like a little a little s h i t uh and he ends up kind of becoming someone you root for as the show goes on, and it's funny also because he has this hot and heavy love affair with um Shelly. Um Or I'm sorry, Shelly. I keep saying Shelly because of Shelly Lee. No, Shelly. He has this hot hot and heavy love affair with Shelly, and then it kind of morphs in season 2 into this kind of um they become almost like an old couple, like bickering, and then they're also taking care of Leo, who's basically like a child. And it It's just so funny to see that whole arc, but and I love it. I like I love those scenes, and their chemistry was always so good. So, I gave this to him the sign, and I kind of told him that, like my feelings on on them together and his performance and everything. And he was really listening, like really taking everything in. And then And this may have just been my perception of it, but he looked at the at the photo for a few seconds in silence. Like he was contemplating, and he says, "I loved her." And meaning Mädchen Amick, who played Shelly. And then he goes on to talk about like how phenomenal of an actress she was and how great they worked together and how much he loved working with her. But then there was another like pause before he ended up, you know, actually writing on it and he the moment that interaction like really played to me, and again, this could just be my how it felt to me, it seemed like he legitimately was in love with her at one point or maybe still holds some of those feelings and and she was kind of like the one who who got away type situation. Um again, could be totally misreading it, but to me that's how it played out and it was really interesting and it was really sweet moment. It was it was um something I did not expect, but he was really gracious, very nice, and then at the end he was just basically like he said, you know, thank you so much for being a fan of Twin Peaks. Thank you so much for, you know, putting as much thought into the show as you did, you know, which I demonstrated in the things I was saying to him and you know, he's just like just thank you. Thank you so much. Thanks for coming out and everything and it was really cool. And he was like that with everyone. They were all super, super nice and yeah, I also enjoyed when I was waiting in line just seeing him interact with other people cuz there there was this one there were two guys who were like in their 20s, like early 20s probably, like young dudes. And he was just like, I got to ask you guys like, how did you get into Twin Peaks because you're young. Like, how did you get into this? Um I couldn't hear what their response was because, you know, their backs were to me uh and they were a little bit away. They they weren't like right in front of me. They were a few people ahead, so uh but it was interesting, you know, and and those events are always so fun. Oh, the other thing is when when things were starting to wind down, I was losing a lot of energy and so was my wife. She went to the concession stand while I still stayed in the line and came back with one of their special food items that they had for the event, which was cheesecake with cherry like uh cherries and cherry syrup on top of it. And the cheesecake was good. Like for for a drive-in you'd probably can like think that it's going to be like not great cheesecake, probably like store-bought like frozen garbage. It tasted good. It was like light and fluffy and very flavorful and the cherry on there was really nice. Way better than I thought it was going to end up being. They also did like local roasted coffee that they had there and you could get like a special mug for the event. And they also did like mini cherry pies as well. So, they just do a lot of cool and interesting things. They had raffle going on, which they typically do those raffles and stick around for that, but it was just a great event. Now, one of the problems with me waiting waiting in line so long is that I didn't really get to watch um Fire Walk With Me because I was in line for the whole time, pretty much. Or almost the whole time. So, that kind of sucked about it, but in the end it was worth it. I own it on 4K. I can watch it and actually my wife said, "We'll do a redo. We'll watch it together at home and kind of, you know, turn the lights off and make it feel like it's a a theater setting." So, it was worth it. I really enjoyed it. If they do Well, I they will be doing another Wild World of David Lynch next year. I'm going to want to go. I'm definitely going to want to go and I think they always try and get celebrities to show up for those, so it'll be very interesting to see who they get. Uh I know last year they had Ray Wise come out and I really wished I could have gone because I really want to meet Ray Wise. Not necessarily because of Twin Peaks, even though I love him in Twin Peaks, but because of the show Reaper, which a lot of people might not know that show, but he plays the devil in that show and it is literally my favorite iteration of the devil ever. He plays the devil to perfection. You love him and you hate him at the same time. It's unbelievable. But anyway, I'm going on a little bit too long about it. I loved it. Mahoning is great. Twin Peaks is great. The fans are great. Just a lot of fun.
