I Ran Worthing Seafront 10K with My Kids... and Couldn't Be More Proud!
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video documents a family's experience at their first official road race, the Worthing 10K, where the father runs alongside his children, Elsa and Ellis, who are both participating in their very first proper races. The run begins on a windy seafront, with the family facing headwinds for the first half of the course before benefiting from tailwinds on the return journey. While the father sets an ambitious goal to finish under 60 minutes by pacing himself carefully to avoid burnout, his children have more modest but equally significant objectives; Ellis aims simply to cross the finish line after his birthday yesterday, while Elsa targets a personal best time of under 45 minutes. The atmosphere is supportive and encouraging, with interactions from fellow runners and pacers highlighting the community spirit of the event.
As the race progresses, the family navigates the challenging conditions, maintaining a steady pace despite the wind and heat that sets in around the halfway point. They pass various landmarks and water stations, greeting friends and other participants along the way, including notable figures like Big Steve and Caitlin from parkrun. The father notes that they are slightly falling behind their 60-minute target as they approach the turnaround at 5 kilometers, but he encourages his daughter to push hard for the final stretch. The second half of the race becomes a test of endurance against the warm weather, yet the family remains focused on completing the course together and supporting each other's efforts.
The race concludes with a triumphant finish that exceeds expectations for such a debut event. Elsa completes the 10K in 60 minutes and 35 seconds, achieving her goal of finishing under an hour, while Ellis delivers an incredible negative split by running the second half in under 20 minutes after starting slower. This performance is particularly remarkable given that it was his first official road race, showcasing significant improvement and resilience. The father expresses immense pride in both children's achievements, celebrating their ability to handle the physical demands of the race and their determination to succeed despite the challenging weather conditions.
Overall, the video captures a heartwarming story of family bonding through sport, emphasizing that the true victory lies not just in the time on the clock but in the shared experience and personal growth of the participants. The father reflects on how well both Elsa and Ellis performed relative to their individual goals, noting that Ellis's ability to run faster in the second half is a testament to his developing fitness and mental toughness. The event serves as an inspiring reminder that even first-time runners can achieve amazing results with preparation and support, leaving everyone involved feeling accomplished and ready for future challenges.

Just walking to the start of the
Worthing 10K.
It is windy on the seafront, so going
out that way is going to be pretty
tough, but we'll have the wind on the
way back. It's going to be lovely. And
it's going to be my children's, Elsa and
Ellis's, very first proper official road
race.
So, we're going to line up around about
there
for the 60-minute marker
and see how we get on.
>> [music]
>> Hi, James. How are you doing?
>> Good. You going [laughter] for it?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, good. What what are you going for?
>> First ever since February 25th, this is.
>> What are you going to go for?
>> I'm going to run behind the 40 pacer and
see how long I can
>> Oh, jeez. Okay, good luck to you. I'm
I'm really I need every bit. I'm running
with my daughter, so hopefully for me it
might not be too stressful.
>> I've got to She's quicker than you, man.
>> They are. They are both They are both
quicker than me now. Have a good one.
See you in a bit.
>> I'll see you.
>> Bye.
Right, that was Sam from Light It Up.
So, we'll see if we can see Aubrey at
some point.
>> [music]
>> We're just on our warm-up. Right, we
found him. Let's go. So, we've seen Sam.
Aubrey's also going for a Is it Is it PB
time?
>> So, PB is 46:19. Anything faster than
that is a win, but the goal for today is
sub 45.
>> Got it?
>> Let's see. I think so.
>> Yeah, yeah. You You looking You are
looking fit, actually. You looking
strong.
>> Cut it back to when you filmed me last
time. You'll understand what you mean.
>> Okay, okay. So, let's let's just check
out his physique here. Look at that Look
at that there. Okay, I bet there's a
six-pack under there. And now And now we
cut to him coming into the finish line
last year.
>> [music]
>> See you later.
>> Right, [music] seeing as it was Ellis's
birthday yesterday and he is the
youngest runner at today's Worthing 10K,
he's going to give a little chat on the
microphone now.
>> Who has not done any of this before?
And what advice would you give to them
if they
are racing for the first time
>> Don't go out too hard, but don't get
stuck behind anyone.
>> [music]
>> Right, Paul, what are you going for?
>> Uh I'm going to go for 46 and a half.
>> That's what you're going for?
>> I'm going for the finish line.
>> Okay, I think you might get that.
>> I think I might.
>> Yeah, that's 30 seconds to go before the
start of Worthing 10K. Into the wind on
the way out and wind behind us on the
way back. Elsa's very first proper road
race.
>> [music]
>> Okay, the front of the field are away.
We will gradually start making our way
forwards. Here we go.
>> [music]
>> Right, we're about to cross the line.
Uh
>> [music]
>> it's taken us 40 seconds to get over the
line. Here we go.
We'll do 6 minutes per kilometer on the
way out and then we'll just [music] see
how we feel.
So, we started just ahead of the 50
pacer, the 50-minute pacer, just because
I didn't want us to get caught up behind
too many people. Hello, buddy. Thank
you.
And
we're just keeping it nice and steady in
the first kilometer. We don't want to
go off too hard and be totally zonked by
halfway. Remember, we're running into
the wind.
>> [music]
>> Right, this is Peter. You may remember
last year
I filmed Peter with his um film my run
flying burrito top.
HE'S NOW GOT TWO MORE.
All branded with film my run on the
side. So, if you're looking for
a film my run branded flying burrito
top, how did you get yours?
>> I went on the
email address and said, "Can you put
film my run on
on the arm?"
And
I quoted the order number.
And I I did it. It only took about 2
days more than normal. So
>> there you go. If you want a branded film
my run top,
order from Flying Burrito and just ask
them and they might well do it for you.
Just about 6 minutes.
1 km done. So we are doing very well.
Thank you very much.
Right, that's 2K done. Still comfortable
at around 6 minutes per kilometer.
>> [music]
>> We are a little bit sheltered now. We've
come off the seafront.
But we won't have that for long.
>> Ready and I like the feedback.
>> So we're 15 minutes in.
The lead runners
will be turning around at halfway just
about now.
>> [music]
>> BIG STEVE!
That's Big Steve and Caitlin who always
see us at parkrun. It doesn't matter
what parkrun we go to, they always seem
to be [music] there.
There we are. That's Zoe Sky in
5:55.
Still windy, still heading into the
wind.
2K to go to the turn around.
Okay, [music] first water stop.
Hi Nick! Hi guys!
Hi Adam! Charlie!
Okay, we've got our lead runner coming
through now.
So he's got [music] a bit of a gap.
That's first lady just going by there.
Second and third ladies not far behind
at all.
>> [music]
>> Right, that's 4 kilometers. 23 minutes.
Here's the 40 minute pacer.
COME ON SAM! COME ON JOHN!
>> [music]
>> HI
GO ON, ALICE. HOW YOU FEELING?
>> GREAT.
>> Go for it, then. Go for it.
>> [music]
>> We're coming up to 5K. We're coming up
to the turnaround.
It's It's now got sunny, and it's now
got warm.
And Alice is feeling it in the heat.
But we're going to get there.
We are still on for 60 minutes.
>> [music]
>> Okay, slightly slower kilometer. 6:20.
But we're now halfway. We are turning
round.
And we're heading back. And most of the
way
we're going to have the wind behind us.
>> [music]
>> Right, 6K
done. We are just falling behind a
little bit now from our 60-minute goal.
>> [music]
>> So, we're just
trying to
keep it together.
4K to go.
Okay, back past the
the Worthing Harriers water station
with less than 4K to go.
>> [music]
[music]
>> Okay, that's 7 km in 43 minutes.
>> [music]
>> We are just behind the 60-minute pacer.
It's not cold and there's a breeze, but
it is warm.
>> [music]
>> Okay, that is 8K. We've got 2K to go.
We've got 11 minutes before the hour
mark.
49 [music] minutes on the clock.
We've got less than a mile to go.
We're trying to catch these 60-minute
pacers.
Elsa's going to give it everything she's
got for the last kilometer and a half.
Right, that was a 5:45
for that kilometer. 1 kilometer to go
now.
We're pushing it as hard as we can.
Try and get as near 60 minutes as we
can.
>> [music]
[music]
>> Come on.
>> [music]
>> Come on, Elsa.
Nearly there. 300 m to go.
Finish line is IN SIGHT.
COME ON, ELSA.
WE ARE NEARLY THERE.
>> [music]
>> AH, there we are.
>> [music]
>> Brilliant.
60 minutes and 30 seconds. Brilliant.
>> [music]
>> You did amazing. Thank you.
>> [music]
>> Elsa did it in 1 hour and 36 seconds.
Amazing. Really, really well done.
>> 42:30
>> EXACTLY WHAT I DIDN'T I SAY?
>> Final split was under 21. Under 20?
>> That is fantastic.
So, YOU DID UNDER 20 MINUTES for the
second half.
>> Yeah.
>> Amazing.
So, yeah, 42 and 1/2. So, you did 22 and
1/2 for the first.
Brilliant. That's exactly what we said,
isn't it? And so, now you know you can
probably go faster in the first half.
>> Yeah.
>> [music]
>> So, we're very pleased with our
performance today. I don't know how
Aubrey and Sam did.
What we do know is that Elsa came in in
60 minutes and 35 seconds. And Ellis did
a negative split of 2 and 1/2 minutes.
Went out at 22 and 1/2 minutes, came
back in under 20 minutes, which is
incredible for his first proper 10K. So,
both of them have done incredibly well.
And I'm really proud of them both. Um
so, that's it from Worthing 10K. Thank
