Video summary

The narrator embarks on a solo twelve-day trip to Japan as a birthday gift for himself, upgrading his flights entirely to first class despite having no other plans initially. Upon arriving at Tokyo Haneda Airport after an eleven-hour flight from Los Angeles, he explores the spacious cabin features before navigating the local transit system alone for the first time in his life. Although he admits to feeling nervous about vlogging in public and not speaking Japanese, he quickly settles into a spontaneous routine of exploring neighborhoods like Shibuya and Harajuku without any pre-set itinerary. His initial days involve conquering jet lag by staying up late at bars and restaurants, eventually finding comfort in the freedom of traveling solo where his only constraint is his own curiosity. A significant portion of his adventure involves shopping for gifts and experiencing Japan's unique retail culture, particularly through a visit to Don Quijote, which he describes as a chaotic mix between Walmart and Disney World filled with bizarre items ranging from giant plush toys to novelty products like wasabi-flavored Kit Kats and stamina training cups. He also visits the Pokémon Center in Shibuya to purchase life-size starter figures for his nephew, marveling at the merchandise while feeling overwhelmed by the sheer variety of goods available. During these shopping excursions, he attempts various humorous experiments, such as putting on colored contact lenses inside a store bathroom and joking about strange items like "fresh foot" moisturizers and snake-themed supplements found in the aisles. The highlight of his journey occurs when he stumbles upon an intimate jazz bar called Soul Stream during a rainy evening with friends Caroline Kwan and Will Neff, leading to one of the most memorable experiences of his trip. After missing their first reservation due to it being closed, they discover this small venue playing vinyl records where the owner passes out from heavy drinking in the middle of the dance floor only to be lovingly surrounded by flowers by fellow patrons celebrating the bar's thirtieth anniversary. This unexpected scene transforms a potential disappointment into a heartwarming story about community and spontaneity that he cherishes deeply, reinforcing his excitement for continuing his solo exploration as the trip progresses toward its conclusion.

You want to go to Japan? >> [music] [music] >> I've made it onto the plane. The only good thing about having a peanut allergy is that I get to pre-board every single flight. That is the only perk. And it was just my birthday, so I splurged a little bit and I said, "You know what? I'll never get anything nice for myself." So, um I upgraded all of my flights to first class. What is Would you guys like a little a little tour? Hmm? I'll do it once people are done boarding because I don't want to be that guy that is vlogging in front of everybody. I'm embarrassed. Somebody already just looked at me. I'm going to go now. >> The flight time to Tokyo Haneda Airport is 11 hours and 35 minutes. >> Hello. How's it going? We're up in the air now. Stop tracking my face. Wow, look at that. Look at that. We're up in the air. There's a bunch of whales down there, I bet. Oh my god. Can you guys imagine all the whales that are probably down there? Whoa, wait. There's another plane. Zoom in on the plane. That's so crazy. Oh my god. We're on our way to Japan. I'm so excited. I'm also slightly slightly nervous, but would you like a little tour of my little seat? You're welcome. Come on, I'll give you a little tour. >> Wow, look at this. There's a door that I can't seem to to close. I don't I don't know if there's a lock or something. I'm not I don't know. This says pull to release sweet door. But that doesn't that doesn't do anything and I tried with both hands. And it doesn't do anything and I feel like I can't feel like I shouldn't pull harder than this. I don't know, guys. I don't want to break So, back here, we've got some little headphones. We've got some water. We've got a big old station where we can put all of our things. Down here, we have plenty of feet room. Wow, look at my feet and the room that it has. That's so crazy. We've got a wonderful little infotainment screen here with all of my favorite movies. Like Hitch with Will Smith. And when the time comes for bed time, all I got to do is press the bed mode and it'll turn into a bed. In addition to this stuff, I've also got a little bag full of things. Isn't that nice? Open up the bag. What do we have inside? We've got an eye mask. Wow. >> [music] >> Joey, do you want to be in my vlog? Joey's in my vlog. Hi. >> [laughter] >> Wow. Japan. Joey's Japan. >> [laughter] >> Wow. Ethan won't stop saying this. >> Wow. Japan. I went to Japan. >> Hey guys, I haven't started vlogging yet until right now. It's the second day. We went out drinking last night. Focus on my face, not other people's faces. Is this it? Oh my god. >> This is it. Stepping onto the thing. We're going diagonally. Wow. Going diagonally on the street. Oh. >> So many selfie sticks everywhere. >> I love everybody up there pointing at people and taking videos. >> Yeah, cuz this is that That's like the best vantage point up there. >> Wow. Japan. >> You. Yes, you. I know you've been skipping out on your doctor's appointments. You can't hide it from me. And yeah, I get it. It sucks because it takes like a month to find a doctor that has an available appointment. And then, once you do get in the appointment, you find out that they don't even cover with your insurance. It's a hassle. It's frustrating. It's borderline insulting. Until now. Thanks to Zocdoc. Zocdoc works with over 150,000 doctors across so many fields across all 50 states. And they make finding a doctor so easy because they let you search for doctors in your area that are also in your insurance network. Whispers of appointments in the air. Fairy dust. You go, you search, you click, you book an appointment, and usually they are confirmed within 24 to 72 hours. And sometimes, if you're extra lucky, you can even get same-day appointments. I know. It's crazy. But honestly, above all else, what I love about Zocdoc is that it's free. You don't have to pay for a monthly subscription. You don't have to pay some big fee. They're just helpful. They're useful. They're here for you to make your life easier. So, take it. >> Stop taking your health for granted. >> Your health is important. Hey. Your health is important. You should prioritize it. So, start doing that with Zocdoc. You can go to zocdoc.com/ethannester. That's z o c d o c dot com slash Ethan Nester. >> And just use those cute little fingers to click around and get an appointment, okay? You promise? You promise? >> Look, Spencer even says to do it. Right, Spence? They got to start They got to start prioritizing their health. Yeah. >> zocdoc.com/ethannester Go do it. Go. We just went and had sushi and it was so good. The rice was so wet and moist in my mouth. >> New burgers, timeless, delicious. Yummy. >> Timeless, delicious. >> This is new. This is delicious. >> But it's timeless. >> Oh, that's cool. >> Power it up and back. >> Due to a construction defect, a water leak occurred and we rebuilt the kitchen. >> That's a really [laughter] weird thing to put on a poster. >> Okay, so we're here in Shibuya. >> I need to get one of these. I need a big I need a big shoulder bag. >> Shoulder bag? >> All right. >> So, I can put my wares in there. >> Let's go to Well, I'll take you to a place that's called Loft. >> They buy, you know, shoulder bags and stuff, but also you it's like a pretty good for like Christmas shopping. >> You can get a lot of gifts for people where they'll it'll make them go >> Wow. >> Wow, Japan. >> Isn't this such a good vlog so far, guys? >> [laughter] >> Joey and I were talking about earlier how we miss older YouTube where you just didn't really edit stuff and it feels more homegrown. >> Yeah. >> So, that's what this vlog is going to be like. AKA, it's going to be really shitty video. >> Not to promise any quality whatsoever. [laughter] >> It's all right. >> The surroundings will speak for themselves. Do they have the Kirby amiibo here? Oh. That's so cool. It's beau- -tiful. >> Does he Does he say things to you? Does he call you slurs? >> Yeah. Look at his feet. That's so cool. >> Oh yeah, and then because of the new game they have life-size Chikorita, Totodile, and Cyndaquil. Like more accurate size. >> That's so cool. We are entering in to the Pokémon Center. I'm really overstimulated. I want to get the starter Pokémon for my nephew. >> That's all the starters from every generation. >> That's so cool. I have to I would like one of each. And then again, he's going to choose and I'm going to kill the other two right in front of him. Look at all these guys. This is so cool. A couple of these. I love this little Umbreon. With his little hand up. >> [laughter] >> What up? I'll say big dog. I'm going to get one of the I'm going to get it. Wow, I'm so overstimulated. This is sick. Life-size starters. >> Chikorita is big. >> Chikorita kind of thick. >> Is that kind of thick though? >> Kind of thick Chikorita. >> Thickorita. >> Thickorita. Travel bus. >> Ethan, are you enjoying your travel? >> [laughter] >> Hello. I am in Japan for the first time ever. I've never been to Japan before. I'm finally in Japan after years of wanting to come here. I mean, I've been wanting to come to Japan for pretty much forever. And I am finally here in Japan for the next 12 days. Welcome to my luxurious hotel room. This is kind of the first time that I'm traveling solo ever. Like solo for a vacation. Cuz usually when I travel, it's for >> [music] >> work in some way. I'm here for 12 days. I'm very, very excited. I basically have zero plans [music] at all. Normally, if I'm traveling, I'm traveling with somebody else or I'm like purely just visiting a friend and staying with a friend. And as you just saw, I was with with my good pal Joey, who lives here. I'm not staying with Joey. I'm just going to stay at random hotels. And during the day, I'm just kind of going to go around and explore. [music] I just was on the train for the first time by myself, navigated it perfectly. I'm very smart. But I'm really excited. I'm really, really excited. Kind of nervous because I don't speak any Japanese [music] at all. Um but I I'm excited to be on a little trip all by my lonesome. Um and I can just do whatever [music] I want. I'm not at I'm not at the whim of somebody else. I can go and explore when and where and how I want to. Uh and I'm very, very excited. So, I really splurged on my way to get here and back. I got first class, but then I was like, "Well, I don't need to spend good money on a hotel room because I'm literally just going to be here sleeping [music] and that's it. So, I don't need a fancy hotel room. Just get me whatever, wherever." And so, that's what I did. I don't know where I am right now. It is currently Sunday, November 23rd, 3:47 [music] p.m. I beat jet lag. I got in last night around this time, actually. I got in around 4:00 [music] uh p.m. yesterday. My flight was at 10:00 a.m. LA time. I got in uh 3:00, 3:30 Tokyo time. And then went out last night with Joey and a couple of his friends, got food, got some drinks, was out until like 11:30, close to midnight. And then I crashed. And thankfully, I conquered jet lag. So good. I woke up at [music] like 3:30 and I was freaking out and I was like, "Oh no, this is when I'm going to wake up. It's 3:30 a.m. right now and I'm not going to be able to get back to sleep." But I was only awake for like 20 minutes and then I went back to sleep and slept until like 8:30. So I feel normal. I'm a little tired for sure. I'm probably going to just chill here for a little bit, maybe take a nap or something and then I'm probably going to go out again but just by myself this time. So I don't I don't know where I'm going to go or what I'm going to do. I'm very excited. Joey took me to [music] Shibuya earlier and we went to Harajuku. That's where I just came from. But man, makes me sad that I live in America. It's my first real day and I'm already sad that [music] I have to go back eventually. The only positive to America is that [music] my dog is so butch. But we He's with Mark and Abby and Chica so he's in good hands. Anyway, [music] I don't feel a little hand vlog. It's going to be real basic and um Okay, see you in a minute. Hello, gamers. What's up? I've taken my little respite and now it's time to go. I have my little over-the-shoulder bag which I will show to you right now. Yes, I'm ready for all things >> [music] >> happening. I just have to put it on backwards. Hold on. Hold on. My little over-the-shoulder bag. Oh yes, baby. Okay. So, I am about to go out for the first time by myself without Joey. I found a little It's not a jazz bar. It's like a It's a bar that just has vinyl and they only play music on vinyl but they primarily play jazz and R&B and stuff. Has good reviews and so I'm going to try and go there and have some food, have a drink and we'll see what happens. So, venture with me >> [laughter] >> out into the great beyond. It's only 6:00 p.m. and I would really like to continue winning jet lag. So, I don't want to fall asleep super super early. So, I want to go out, see some stuff, um and we will see what happens. [music] So, let's go. Okay, it's time, guys. It's time. And I'm so excited about it. There is vending machines everywhere in Japan that have all of these tasty drinks. But they have hot coffee. They have milk coffee. I'm going to try milk coffee. But now I have my Suica card and I just do this. And then I do this. And then it's there. And it's hot. It's hot. Oh, it's hot. And it's so good. Guys, I'm really nervous about the vlogging in public. I hate vlogging in public, but I want to, but I just find it so embarrassing. Okay, I'm going to go now. >> [music] >> Hello vlog. I've done a bad job at vlogging. I went in there, Soul Stream is I think what it was called, had some drinks there, had a few drinks there. I've had many a drink there. I'm a little bit drunk. And then I pulled a very Ethan move, which was I had to pee super badly, but I had already paid the check and I was on my way out. And as I was leaving, I was like, "Fuck, I have to pee really bad." So, instead of asking if I could use the bathroom, I I just went to the train station. I paid the train fare cuz I knew that there was a bathroom down there, so I just paid the train fare uh twice because you have to pay to enter and then you have to pay when you leave. So, I paid the train fare uh so I could pee cuz I was too anxious to ask if there was a bathroom. But, it is a really good place over here. >> [laughter] >> If you're ever in Japan, go to Shinjuku Shinjuku and um go to Soul Stream. Really cool bar. Played a lot of R&B music all on vinyl. Really good drinks, good people. It was wonderful. And I I didn't film there because I felt weird about it. You guys understand, right? Right. Right. Chat, it's now later in the night. And things have occurred. I have successfully navigated the train system in Japan. I'm on my way back to my hotel. And I'm almost there. Which means I've won. Had a great time. Uh went to a bar, as I think I told you, and went to a restaurant and had food, and it was so good. And it was so cheap. So, now my first day in Japan comes to an end. I don't think it was very eventful for you, but it was very eventful for me. And I had a great time. I'm very excited to go to sleep and start my day anew tomorrow. And tomorrow I have no plans. Okay, it's my third day in Japan now. Well, kind of second day in Japan. I know that I'm doing a Japan vlog, and I will. I will continue to do it. But, today I just wanted to kind of go. It was my first solo full solo day today. And I wanted to go and do stuff by myself. So, I went out this morning. I walked around. I'm staying like kind of by the Imperial Palace, so I went and walked around there and then I just walked for like hours today. And then I went to Shibuya and then I went to Harajuku and this is where the important stuff comes in, guys. I intentionally packed light. [music] So light, in fact, that I do not have enough clothes to last me my whole trip unless I do laundry because I wanted to come to Japan and I wanted to buy another suitcase while I was here and fill it with things. So, I got an outfit today, a full a full outfit. I am going to continue to go shopping, so you will come next time, I promise. But, it's night time now, it's like 6:00. I'm about to go and have dinner and then Caroline Kwan and Will Neff are both here in Japan at the same time as me. So, I'm also going to go meet up with them and have some bevvies. I don't think I'll I'll be taking you with me, sorry. You understand, don't you? But, it's time for a new outfit. So, let me do a little fashion show for you. >> Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, god, I ate. Oh, Oh, Oh, Another day, another slay, baby. It is Tuesday, Wednesday, Tuesday, I think, here in Japan. I'm on my way right now to meet up with Joey and Connor and Garth and record an episode of the Trash Taste podcast. Very exciting. I'm just walking right now, but it's started to rain and so I said, "I need to get an umbrella." This is really where the vlog starts for me. While I've been wanting to vlog my Japan trip, this originally was a trip that was a vacation and like a birthday gift for myself. So, I haven't made it the top top priority to be vlogging, but um you know, I thought that I would take the first couple of days cuz I am here for 12 days. Take the first few days and not worry about filming too too too too much. Last night I managed to meet up with Caroline Kwan and Will Naap. They happen to be in Japan at the same time and so met up with them for drinks. And we went to this bar that was so amazing. We stumbled into this place. This was not a place that we were trying to go to. The other bar was closed. We walk around the corner. We hear music coming from the second story window. We go around and we're like, is this a bar? And they're like, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a $20 cover. And we're like, okay, yeah, that's fine. We walk up. It is about the size of a bedroom. It literally like kind of looks like somebody's apartment a little bit. There's a DJ in the corner. There's a bar. There is about 10 square feet of a dance floor. But the vibes are just so good. The DJ was incredible. About 15 minutes in, we're standing there dancing. Two people come in. One guy who looks completely normal. Another wrapped around his shoulder who is just obliterated drunk. We look over and it's like, oh, is this going to like be a problem? And then they go to the middle of the dance floor and this guy collapses on the ground not in a dramatic way where it's concerning, but it's just in a way where it's like, oh, this guy is done and he's ready for beddy-byes. He gets on the floor, curls up into a cute little ball. Like not even joking, it was very adorable. And we're like, oh my god, this guy is just going to sleep on the on the floor in the middle of this bar. Okay, here, let me continue my story while I have some of my egg sandwich from 7-Eleven. Oh my god. It's just so good. So there's guys on the floor. Everyone starts to kind of crowd around him. Again, not in a concerning way. It's very clear that everyone in the bar knows each other. Everyone starts to crowd around him, take photos. Then the bartender comes around with a single flower and places it on his shoulder while he's curled up in a ball. She then leaves, comes back 2 minutes later with a full floral arrangement and starts putting all of these flowers around him. I will put up pictures now. It turns out that this is the current owner of the bar and this week is the 30th anniversary of this bar happening. So, the dude passed out is the owner of the bar. He's just partying, gets obliterated. And then they take all these flowers and she starts handing out flowers and she's like, "Put the flowers on him." So, everyone's putting flowers on him and it was like a DIY impromptu funeral and everyone's taking pictures with him and he's just curled up, he's fast asleep. There he doesn't have a care in the world. He's He looks so peaceful. The bartender then like thanks everybody for being there >> [snorts] >> and it was just such a funny thing. It was hilarious in the moment and as it was happening I was like, "I'm having a core memory." And it was so delightful. It was just It was amazing. It was such a fun night. You know, that's the beauty of life, isn't it? You're in a completely different country on a trip by yourself. All of the sudden you realize that two of your friends are randomly in the same place as you. You go out to drinks. The first bar doesn't doesn't pan out. You stumble into something else that just turns out to be like a beautiful thing that I will never forget. We're leaving and we go outside and there's a guy sitting at a table and there's like a T-shirt next to him and Will is like, "Hey, like is this merch for the bar?" Cuz it's laid out in a way that's like presentational, right? And he's like, "Hey, is this merch for the bar?" And the guy is like, "I don't know." He's like, "Okay." There's a dude, very drunk, stumbles out of the bar. >> [laughter] >> And the guy just goes, "Oh, what's up, Mike?" The guy just stumbles out and in very broken English is just like, "Uh party hard." >> [laughter] >> And collapses on the side of the road. But again, all in a very like, you know, people took care of him and stuff. But it was just it was really, really awesome. And I'm very, very glad that it happened. And I'm very glad that that first bar didn't pan out because if it did, wouldn't have had this crazy memory that I have now. Okay, so now, I just got a text from Joey. It's 11:45 right now. He wants me to come in a little bit later now. So, I've got time to run around and do whatever. In the spirit of spontaneity, um because it's rainy and gloomy, I want some ramen. I want some cozy ass soup. So, I think that I'm just going to walk around until I find something. Again, in the spirit of spontaneity. I'm just going to walk until I find a ramen place. We could eat at Garden Dental. Oh, Garden Dental looks so good. I have to get this for my dad. Okay. Arigato gozaimasu. Dude, what a fun find. I'm just so excited about that. So, this whole time that I've been here, because it's November, I'm like, "Oh, well, I should do all my Christmas shopping while I'm here because I should do all my Christmas shopping while I'm here. I don't I don't I don't know what else to say. So, I've just been looking for random things. Uh my brother is a musician. >> Ooh. >> Yeah, I'm going to tell I'm going to tell you this story and then I'm going to go in there and eat some food. My brother's a musician. He's a guitarist. But, I went to the Fender flagship store, um which I guess is the only one in the world. Uh I got him some stuff there. And then now I've gotten this. I want to go to the Pokémon Center. Yesterday was holiday. I think it was like a like Labor Day. And so there was a lot of people out because people had day off work. But, I want to go to the Pokémon Center and I want to get my nephew uh Squirtle, Charizard, and Bulbasaur. And I want to get him all three of those plushies and then present them to him so he has to choose. >> And then it'll burn me up with some ramen. >> Anyway, it's wet and cold and I am hungry. Let's go get some ramen. Okay, so what >> This is the intro level, very good. >> Okay. >> This is the after max. This is the big body. This is the hyper. >> So, >> I want hyper. I want to try >> You want hyper? >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. I want to try hyper. Thank you. liver >> I like to use it as like a challenge. So, I take it and then I have to get a photo. >> Really? >> Oh, it has the logo of a liver on it. >> You're so weird. You're something else. >> I just [laughter] said it has the logo of the liver. You know the the liver's famous logo. >> What? It does have a little [laughter] liver on it. >> the liver logo >> What did you say about Heavy Natural? >> How do you say it? No, no. >> I love heavy natural. I don't know what where where we are and what we're doing. >> So, this is a Don Quijote. Hold on. We'll pause. >> Okay. >> for his vlog. >> Explain for the vlog. >> This is the Japanese version of Walmart. Except, it's like if Walmart was mixed with a Disney world. >> Okay. >> So, it's kind of like a theme park. >> [laughter] >> Kind of like a department store. They got everything. Name something. >> Eels. And they've got them. Wait, they're really big. Woah. >> Name something else. >> Uh, do they have arcade machines here? >> No. No, why would you ever say that? >> [laughter] >> These guys are crazy. >> Here, you want some light? >> Wow. >> So, it picks up. Is that better? >> Yeah. Oh, this guy's coming out. They're huge. Look at how big. I just don't know how I feel about it. I want to go inside. I want to go inside. >> You want some feet, boy? >> Feet. Oh, it's like big moisturizer Oh, yeah. Made in Japan. >> [music] >> Is this the theme song you were talking about? >> [music] [singing] [music] >> This is going to sound so out of pocket. Do they have crazy porn here? >> [music] >> Yes. >> Probably. >> Wow. Woah. >> [laughter] >> This place is crazy. I'm really excited to see the porn here. >> GVB Girls vs. Boys >> Oh. >> are trying to find the strangest item. >> Sure. >> Okay. >> That's not the porn. >> That's not porn. >> Well, should I grab the foot thing then? >> Yeah, grab the foot thing. >> Oh, I'll grab it. >> Put it small, grab the foot thing. >> Does that just play on a loop? >> Yes. Yes. And if you work here, you go and save. >> Are we just doing this floor or every floor? >> Home. [music] We're freezing over. >> Oh my god. >> Back to the Future limited edition Don Quixote car >> [laughter] >> That's sick. >> Don Quixote Wait. Hoverboard Back to the Future towel? >> That's kind of cool. >> [laughter] >> Bro. >> That's clever. >> Really What is this? >> Uh I don't I don't know. It's not slippers, is it? >> pocket blaster. >> [laughter] >> Oh my god, this is huge. >> You have no idea. >> Oh my god. Have you ever put in colored contacts? >> Yes. >> Do they hurt really bad? >> No. >> I wonder if I should get some and put them in. >> [laughter] >> Just come out with crazy contacts. >> Putting on colored contacts once in the Don Quixote bathroom. >> [laughter] >> And as someone who has never put on uh contact lenses before, ever >> It will be hard. Here we go. >> Purple flaps. Passion grape. Woah. It does seem like I'm asking for it a little bit if I'm putting on contacts in the Don Quixote bathroom. >> How did you get my infection? [laughter] >> Well, I mean, pretty normal. >> Eyes. They got fresh foot. >> Oh, thank god. Thank god. I was looking for that. >> Looking for fresh foot. >> Cotton Wait. >> It's cotton candy What is this? >> It's It's We're getting this. >> This looks like like dryer lint. >> This >> [laughter] >> Some Mr. Candy >> This looks like the lint that comes out of your dryer. It just keeps going up. >> Yeah, a second verse would also >> [laughter] >> A second verse would be nice, yeah. Oh.
