I Finally Watched Don Dohler's Dead Hunt!

Thanks for checking out this video. So, this is kind of a movie review, like a no spoiler movie review, but it's kind of a little bit more of a story to it because normally for a movie like this, I would just be putting out a short video for a review on the movie itself. Uh but this was a a specific circumstance that ended up happening. So, I did watch the Don Dohler and Joe Ripple directed Dead Hunt. And this was sent to me, and that's why I'm doing a longer video because there's a little bit of a story behind it. And I'm very thankful that this was sent to me. Shout out to Robert Long, uh who sent this to me, who worked with Don Dohler when he was alive. So, basically what happened is uh Robert had commented on one of my videos. I think it may have been my review for Night Beast or another video where I was talking about Don Dohler. And he was commenting and just kind of talking about how much he loves Don Dohler and how great, you know, Dohler's movies were or are still. And I was just kind of, you know, responding to him saying, "Yeah, I really enjoy it." And he then he had said that he had worked with Don Dohler. I was like, "Oh, that's amazing. I actually know uh I have a friend who did a documentary about Don Dohler, so he was working with him for the documentary." And he was like, "Oh, who is that?" So, come to find out we have a friend in common who is a John Kinhart, who was the director of Blood Boobs and Beast, which is a great documentary that's now currently distributed by Troma uh entertainment, so people can check that documentary out, but it's just about Don Dohler and, you know, his career and his movies and yeah. So, it was just kind of funny because we're in this we're both in the state of Maryland and we know the same person. He was also telling me that he's big into giallo films and he's liked a lot of the giallo reviews I have on my channel, which I do have a lot. Giallos and like giallo-inspired giallo-esque films. Uh so he was just asking me, he was like, "Have you seen Dollor's film Dead Hunt?" And I had not. I have not seen Dead Hunt up until this point. 2007 release, so it was like later Dollor. Um I've only seen more of the the earlier Dollor stuff at the at this point. So um he was like, "Let me send you a promo Blu-ray." So this is a promo uh Blu-ray that he sent. You can see that you know it's a burned one. Um so it was very nice of him to do that. Uh packaging looks better than promo, I will say. But right now this film can be purchased through Vinegar Syndrome with Saturn's Core. So Saturn's Core ended up putting it out. It looks like a nice version of a release for it, too. It has a lot of nice special features. There are two commentaries included here that are also on the uh Saturn's Core release. Uh and there are still copies of the slip cover version and the standard version on Vinegar Syndrome's site. But the I went through uh some of the commentaries of both of them and they're both quite nice commentaries. They give you a lot of interesting new information. One of them is with Joe Ripple and Don Dollor and the other one is with um a bunch of the cast uh and crew members uh including Robert Long being involved with that one. So in addition to sending this to me before I get to the actual review of it, um he also sent me a little note that I'll read excluding my address on there, but I do think it's cool that it's with Dead Hunt written on there. So he said um he included his YouTube channel, so if you want to check that one out, uh it's just look up Robert Long the Second. So Robert Long numer- uh Rom- Roman numeral two. Uh and that's he does reviews on there. Uh so this is a note. He said, "Carlin, this is a promo Blu-ray I sent to distributors. It is now produced by Saturn's Core and distributed by Vinegar Syndrome. The produced dicks discs slip up. The produced discs are perfect. This disc has an audio drop of 30 seconds on the regular movie. Totally fine. Uh I hope you enjoy it and review it. Long live Don Dollar, long live who done it slashers, giallos, and crimmies. I 100% agree with that. Long live Don Dollar. I also love who done it slashers, giallos, and crimmy films. Which actually I but I think I've only seen one crimmy film, but I keep meaning to see more cuz I know it's the precursor to giallo. So, it's just kind of nice that it's kind of like laid out. It's like crimmies and giallo that crimmies led to giallos, giallos led to slashers, and then who done it's. Um so, it's the whole lineage. And it's just awesome to meet, well, virtually meet and hear from another fan of those subgenres of horror. And also Don Dollar, so and someone who's even closer cuz he worked with him. So, anyway, Dead Hunt itself. Finally having seen the movie, I enjoyed it for what it is. Like, I had seen a trailer of it sometime ago and thought that does look kind of fun, but I had never purchased anything. Uh I didn't purchase the Saturn's Core cuz I was trying to kind of like limit my spending on Vinegar Syndrome stuff lately. Also, I just have so much piling up. You can't see it, but there's a pretty big like two stacks of movies below this poster right here that I still need to watch and then rotate into my collection. So, there's a lot. But, Dead Hunt, it takes place in a warehouse. And it's a bunch of people who are film critics who get together uh and they while they're getting together they and talking about their film critic stuff, uh the lights go out. The doors are electrified, and there's a killer, a masked killer who's after him. So, it's kind of like, who's doing this? Now, I will say I would recommend watching this movie without reading the synopsis on the Vinegar Syndrome website, because it tells you everything that happens in the movie just about, like the main the main reveal of the killer's motivation and everything. And where some people may be able to guess it while they're you're watching the film, I just think it's better just to go into the film not reading that stuff. It is a worthwhile film, for sure. I will just tell you off the bat that as far as like a so bad it's good or like low-budget film, you know, one of those types of ratings, I'm going to give it three and a half out of five stars as a film. I think it's a lot of fun. Uh so, it definitely has that low-budget, so bad it's good acting a lot of times. Although, some of the acting, I will say, was above quality that I expected for a film of this ilk. And that was kind of impressive to me. Also, it it's shot quite well, especially that there's like a fight sequence, and that was really well shot. I was actually really impressed with how they pulled off making the punches that were being thrown look very realistic. Uh a lot of time and care went into that, and you could tell. There is wonky CGI that shows up in this, but for films like this, I love that type of stuff. Like, it adds to the kind of cheesy fun of it. So, I love that aspect of it. Um and there's some fun gore gags as well. And you know, when you see them up close, you can tell that like, you know, they're they're like built practical effects. They don't look like super realistic. Part of that has to do with the the film stock as well, but it's um it's fun. I I really enjoy it, and it doesn't feel like there's a lot of like more more dialogue-driven moments, because that's very typical of low-budget independent films like this and Don Dollar films. But the dialogue, like a lot of Don Dollar films, the dialogue is fun and it keeps you engaged and it just I don't know, there's something about Don Dollar dialogue that's different than a lot of dialogue. There's kind of this wholesomeness to it in certain ways, even when it they're talking about like non-wholesome thing things. I don't know. I don't know what it is or maybe I'm just biased towards Dollar films. I don't I don't know. I don't know what that is. But this is a fun film, so I wanted to make sure I I went ahead and did a, you know, a full-on video for this because you know, Robert took the time to, you know, send this to me and he really did not have to do that. He could have just said, "Hey, you should check this movie out and, you know, get to it on your own." But I will say that him sending this to me actually made sure that I watched it sooner because when someone does something nice like that for me, I want to make sure I prioritize that. So, hopefully people enjoyed this video. Um Robert, shout out to you. Great person, uh from what I can glean, obviously. Certainly loving the right subgenres of horror, I will say that much. Uh but yeah, I would love to hear other people's takes on the film Dead Hunt. Go ahead and put it down in the comments. It doesn't have a whole lot of reviews on Letterboxd. I think it's like 30-some at this point, although I added into that uh before I did this video. So, hopefully we can get uh more love on that and I would like to see more Don Dollar films getting released, too. It is good to see Saturn Score did one, but hopefully there are more in the pipeline. That would be awesome. Uh but yeah, everyone go ahead and comment.
