I Asked AI to Fix Classic Plus Paladins… It Actually Worked

Video summary

The video explores an experiment where the creator asked AI to redesign the Classic World of Warcraft Paladin talent trees for a hypothetical "Classic Plus" expansion, aiming to address long-standing player complaints regarding sustain, threat generation, and raid viability. While the creator initially expected the AI to produce ridiculous or overpowered suggestions based on common internet misconceptions, the results were surprisingly thoughtful and aligned with many of his own design philosophies. The AI proposed significant changes such as making Consecration a baseline ability at level 20, extending seal durations to thirty seconds, and integrating mana regeneration mechanics that reward avoidance actions like blocking and dodging. These adjustments were intended to create a more coherent combat loop without sacrificing the vanilla pacing or the unique identity of the Paladin class compared to Warriors or Shamans. A major portion of the analysis focused on refining the Holy and Protection specs to make them genuinely viable for raid tanking while retaining their distinct roles. The AI suggested improvements like increasing the healing potency of Holy Shock, adding damage reduction upon critical heals, and modifying Reckoning to function as a reliable burst mechanic rather than relying on controversial crit-based procs. For the Retribution spec, the AI proposed normalizing Seal of Command mechanics to work with both melee and spell damage while enhancing aura utility to provide legitimate raid-wide benefits. Although some specific numerical values, such as massive damage increases from certain talents, were deemed too strong by the creator, the underlying concepts often mirrored his own ideas for balancing the class, particularly in how defensive abilities could generate threat and how offensive capabilities could be expanded without breaking the game's economy. Despite the conceptual success of the AI's suggestions, the final visualization of the talent trees revealed the limitations of current AI tools when dealing with complex graphical interfaces like World of Warcraft's talent system. The generated tree displayed arrows in incorrect positions, used emojis instead of official icons, and included nonsensical visual elements like a picture of the creator's face for Blessing of Kings. While these graphical failures were humorous, they highlighted that while AI can effectively brainstorm mechanics and balance theories, it currently lacks the ability to accurately reconstruct or visualize intricate game UIs. The video concluded with the creator promising to present his own fully realized version of Classic Plus Paladin talents in a future episode, emphasizing that while AI is a fun tool for ideation, human oversight remains essential for maintaining game integrity and visual fidelity.

Have you asked AI to design a new talent tree first? That's hilarious. That's funny. Okay, so there's a lot going on right now. Blizzcon is around the corner. There's a lot of talk about classic plus, classic minus, WoW 2, classic 2, this, that, whatever. There's so many different things people are talking about about what is going to be announced at Blizzcon. Obviously, you guys know I'm in the cut, okay? I'm I'm very in the cut. I've been in the cut for many years. However, I don't know everything, but I also have very much my own opinions on things. I've [music] kind of I have like chicken scratch like notes and stuff of like what I would do for like the paladin talent trees and classic plus and I'm going to make a video about that. But Chad had a very funny idea. They said, "Hey Sband, you should prompt AI and see what AI would come up with different talent trees." We're going to do this. We're going to take a look at it. I don't expect it to be particularly good. I'm going to be honest. I think there's a lot of bad opinions on the internet and I think that it's going to aggregate a lot of these bad opinions and it's going to give us some sort of bogus like way too overpowered ridiculous sort of thing for like what a classic plus would be. But I think it'll be fun to look at. Take a look at what the AI comes up with and how in line it is with something that like I would think or maybe maybe other people in chat or you guys watching on YouTube would think. So let's get to it. Let's check it out. I think it'll be a lot of fun. chatgypty.com. Can you take the classic World of Warcraft Paladin talent tree from patch 1.12 and [music] redesign it so it's optimized to address many Dude, I'm going to I'm going to get angry looking at what they said. To address many of the concerns [music] and complaints of players that have given feedback over the years. Okay. Okay. Let's see what the AI says just for fun. Wait, hold on. I would approach it as vanilla plus my design rules. Consecration becomes baseline at level 20. Wait, I said that. Paladins get a baseline taunt. All seals last 30 seconds rather than 30 seconds and disappearing on judgment. Okay, can I say something about this? Some people want this, dude. the the RP the mechanic of I'm infusing myself with freaking righteous holy energy and then I'm taking it and I'm expelling it into the freaking demon unleashing this thing. I'm losing the holy power and boom boom boom like that's cool and it constitutes like hey the judgment is so powerful that it constitutes you losing the buff and you need to recast it. Twitch sold the span AI training to open AI maybe. I don't like losing your seal on judgment cast. [music] Big design goal would be keep seals judgments blessings aura slow 200 swings plate hybrid utility and deliberate vanilla combat pace but make all three talent trees coherent genuinely capable of fulfilling their advertised role. Struggle complaints are remarkably consistent. Red lack sustain damage buttons has threat mana problems and no complete raid tanking toolkit. Key tanks like consecration living holy. Holy shock is underwhelming. 31 point payoff. Oh my gosh. Several talents are either excessively niche or don't synergize with the world. Spiritual atunement light becomes baseline when healed by another player. Restore mana gold to 5%. Crystal healing doesn't trigger it. Progress a resource engine without giving holy talent is infinite mana. Greater blessing should become baseline around level 50. Sure. Oh, it says put divine intellect and I bet this is where it like turns into a disaster. Spiritual focus and divine intellect both in the same tier. Tier two, healing light. Uh increase healing done by holy light, flash of light, and holy shock. Wait, is that how it currently works? I think it's just holy light and flash of light increase damage caused by I [music] actually think that should do this too. I think it should also increase your holy shot >> months for this. >> This is kind of funny. A lot of this is in line with the things that I thought increase damage caused by righteousness and judgment of righteousness by 369 1215 improves heal righteous. I think the big thing with this is it should be applied after spell power. So the way this talent works in vanilla is is not the same as later on and it's applied before spell power increase and it makes it really bad. So, some of the under the hood type stuff needs to be addressed. Divine purpose reduces mana cost of your seals and judgments by five. Oh, this is new. Mana cost of seals and judgments reduced by 5 to 10. This gives holy rent and holy pro hybrid something useful. I think this is important to have good. Dude, I'm so surprised by how I don't necessarily think this is good so far, but I'm I'm surprised at how like it's thought out pretty well. Like there's like reasoning for why it does the things it does. Illumination is the same. Improve blessing wisdom is the same. Increase chance to resist fear and disorient to 10. I actually think this is not good enough. I think unyielding faith needs some sort of a change or buff. Divine favor when activated gives you next flashlight, holy shock or okay, same thing. Increase the curt holy light and holy shock by four to or sorry by 6%. That's sanctified light. Sanctified light. I think I think that's from burning crusade. Your judgment of light and judgment of wisdom effects last 10 20 30 seconds longer and have a 33 to 60 100% chance of refresh when you land a melee attack. This creates a cool melee healer incentive without requiring holy palent melee DPS. [music] They already refresh when you land a melee attack. Holy shock crits make your next holy light really fast. That is that a Wrath of Lich King thing? This concept resembles later paladin design, but it fits vanilla exceptionally well. I don't know if it does. Bless life after crits. Reduce damage taken by 10% for 6 seconds. Then again, this is kind of nice. So you can run and holy shock. You have your global cooldown and then if it crits, then that one and a half seconds is your global cooldown time. So you don't actually lose uptime on getting your heal out. So that's kind of nice cuz one of the big problems right now is uh if you holy shock, you actually lose throughput. Holy shock 15 second cool down. Blast target with holy energy causing holy damage to an enemy or healing an ally. Uh significantly improve its coefficients base values compared to 1.12. I agree with this. I think I think one of the big problems with holy shock and vanilla is the fact that it lasts 30 seconds. I'm surprised at how good the AI is. Some of these things are like actual things like from the horse's mouth. I'm the horse. Also deals additional 50% damage to undeaden demons. Sure. Improves it coefficients base values compared to one. Yeah. Like I think this needs a higher coefficient and it lasts 30 seconds. Like that's so bad. Like if you're going to buff its healing and stuff like that, you're going to buff its values. It's hard to say because it depends on what the numbers are for like all the classes, right? Like and and how everything works in the grand scheme of things. So I think 15 seconds could be fine. I think you could go less, but if you go less, then it needs to not be buffed that much, right? I mean, it's bad right now. So, I think if you made it like 10 seconds, that would be fine, but it still needs a minor buff. Okay, so this tree needs the most work. Uh, my version makes best AOE tank, strong dungeon deck, viable raid tank, still has vanilla weaknesses. It should not simply replace warriors. I'm a big believer in tank identity. I think each class that has a tank spec needs to be different. I think if warriors, druids, paladins, and let's say let's say shamans. I think shamans should be able to like off tank like tank dungeons and tank certain things in raids. Kind of like how paladins are in vanilla right now. I think shamans should be like that. I think a prop paladin should be different from a warrior. Should be different from a feral druid. Should be different from a shaman tank. I think shamans should have a tanking spec in vanilla. They should have weaknesses. They should be good tanks for like a fiveman dungeon. You know, maybe they can tank some things in a raid. They're like an off tank. kind of similar in capabilities, not in the same way, but similar in capabilities to what what a prop paladin is in vanilla right now. Chat GPT's version makes pro best AOE tank, strong dungeon tank, viable raid tank, still has vanilla weaknesses. They should not simply replace warriors. Uh, improve D.VO aura. Increase the armor provided by D.VO by 5, 10, 15, 25%. It's the same. Readout is still in tier one. After being struck by a melee attack, it gains 6% increased chance to block for 10 seconds. stacks up to five times. What is it in Burning Crusade? It's a It increases the percentage chance in Burning Crusade. That's what this needs to be. So, this is really bad when you're talking about like crushability. Now, I do think it doesn't require being crit. I think Chad GPT dropped the ball on this one big time cuz this this doesn't really work in like the the scope of the game and how like tanking mechanics and defensive attack table works. You can't have it like stack up to five times. I mean, this just makes no sense. Having defensive talents proc from critical hits creates a weird incentive for tank is something players have specifically complained about with. Now, I do agree with this. I do think that it it needs to having a something proc off a crit is pretty bad. Now, that leads to something else that is an issue down the road that let's see how let's see what Chad GBT thinks when we get to that. Talking about reckoning increase melee and spell hit chance by uh 1 2 3%. Precision is the same. Guardians favor is the same as vanilla. See, you can't have this be the same and then you have blessed hands in in holy. Then you like your your freedom and blessed protection are like no cool down. Should be a flat percentage black chance. Uh 30% seems a lot for only five points investment. Yeah, it should be 30%. Actually, if we're being if we're keeping it real, you can make a pretty strong argument that it shouldn't even work like that at all because of how you need holy shield up. Like if you take if you take warrior shield block, warrior shield block has like the 75%. Warrior shield block has it's they have one ability that gives them a ton of block percentage block chance to help them be uncrushable whenever shield block is up. A paladin needs readout up and holy shield. Holy shield gives you a lot less percentage and readout like it's like half and half essentially. So they made it a little bit different. Even like talking about like a paladin being uncrushable. It's like you're uncrushable. That's a whole rabbit hole to go down. So anyway, while Righteous Fury is active, holy threat increased by an additional 15, 30, 45%. Uh, what is this right now? It goes to like 190. Oh, so they're saying generate even more thread. Is that right? 50%. Oh, wait. They nerfed it. They nerfed Righteous. So, hold on. Chat GPT nerfs Righteous Fury cuz it's it makes it 45 instead of 50%. Damage taken reduced. Now, Right Fury clearly says I am tanking. Yeah, it they nerfed it. They made it worse. Wait, hold on. Damage taken reduced. Does it reduce the damage taken in vanilla? I don't think it does, actually. I think that's a Burning Crusade thing. Okay, so they add that in from Burning Crusade. I do think that's a good thing to add. Increase the amount absorbed by your shield by 10 20 30%. Increase your chance to block by one, two, three with the shield spec. Uh, so they also give you a 3% more chance to block. That's kind of nice, actually, cuz that'll help you get over the hump to that like uncrushable thing we were talking about. This says keep blessing of kings as the 11point talent. Okay. All right. Now, I'm curious to see how they want to approach Reckoning. After blocking, dodging, or parrying an attack, you have a 20 40 60 80 100% chance for your next melee attack within 8 seconds to generate an additional attack. Cannot occur more than once every 2 seconds. This solves the bizarre original design of Reckoning on Zen to crit the tank. It also preserves the iconic reckoning fantasy without reckoning bomb exploits. No. See, I think I think you can't do this cuz now you're getting you're you're breaking reckoning. You can't break reckoning. Original reckoning mechanics have been a prison sort of confusion and complaints. Yeah, cuz people don't know. All right, that's so funny. It should be able to occur more than once every two seconds, but there should be the the four stack cap. So you have one main attack with four stack. It shouldn't be an auto attack reset and use like the same function call as hand of justice, it should just be a stack and then whenever your swing is hit, whenever your attack is ready and your swing hits, then it hits them all instead of doing the auto attack resets because the auto attack resets actually are they're just scuffed. The auto attack resets, you could pro get crit more than four times within 3.8 8 seconds and then you were getting a bunch of attacks in now. Like doing this like is that better than just like one big chunk of a lot of them, but it's, you know, it's capped. Maybe it's less potential DPS, but it's more burst. I think it should stay the same way it is. I do think if you get crit, you should get a charge, but I also think I also think you should get a charge. I think it should work like this. I think if you block, dodge parry, if you crit, it should have a 100% chance. If you block dodge parry, I think if you block dodge parry, it should give you a 50% chance. I don't know. This is like a tuning thing. I actually think this is a great idea and I had a similar idea for this. I think it should be 50%. But also, I want to be a crit. This is my first WoW stream and I'm more lost than a League pro nerding out. Dude, you're welcome. Welcome to class. Welcome to church. Welcome to the temple. Welcome to the home of freaking righteousness, the the way and the truth of the light of the holy path. Welcome. I'm thoroughly surprised by how good this is. I don't think it's great. I don't think it's perfect by any means, but it's doing a number of things that I actually agree with. This is kind of crazy. Yeah, we just we just asked AI, "What would you do if you were to make the Palon talent tree?" Just cuz I'm curious cuz I did that other one from from that guy on Reddit. This is surprisingly similar to kind of what I was thinking. Anyway, let's keep going. Blessing of Sanctuary reduces damage taken from all sources by a small flat amount whenever the bless uh bless target blocks, dodges, or parries. Deals holy damage to the attacker, restores 1% of maximum mana. I do think having some form of like a mana return attached to blessing [music] of sanctuary is really good. It's the tanking blessing, right? It also incentivizes having more paladins in a raid. I mean, if you have 40 man raids, you're going to have multiple paladins. So, you can have your paladin tank have blessing of sanctuary up. So, not only do you take a little bit of reduced damage, but if you avoid the attack, then uh there's like a return damage aspect to it. Dodge, block, parry. Avoidance is good. Avoidance increases your threat effectively while you have blessing of sanctuary up. Holy damage has a higher threat threat uh threat coefficient because of Righteous Fury. This is really good. I think this is a wonderful, wonderful option. This is kind of crazy. One-handed weapon spec increases all damage dealt while a one-handed melee weapon is equipped by 2 4 6 8 10%. Okay. In vanilla, this increases the damage you deal with one-handed weapons by 10%. Now, hold on. 1% mana per hit sounds like too good. I don't think so, cuz it's per block dodge parry. I think their their idea for blessing of sanctuary is good. Sacred duty increase stamina by 246. Reduce the cooldown of divine protection by 60 seconds. That's kind of like it's drawing some inspiration from burning crusade there. Ardan defender when below 35% health, damage taken reduced by 510%, two-point talent. very restrained compared with later versions. Holy shield increases block chance by 30% for 10 seconds for four charges. Each block deals holy damage to the attacker and generates additional threat. Additionally, while holy shield is active, you cannot be critically struck by enemies within three levels of you. Wait, that doesn't work. Yeah, I that does not work. I feel like that does not work. That to me, this is like a sort of like band-aid fix type situation. Let's look at how the AI decided to do the retribution talents. I wouldn't turn vanilla rat into wrath rat. Wait, the AI. Okay, cinema. Okay, chat. We love AI now. We love AI. I'm like starting to think that this thing like this thing definitely like was reading. I think this watches my streams, dude. Twitch like sold the data to to open AI or something. Fantasy should remain giant slow weapons, sealed judgment, occasional explosive holy damage. The problem is that vanilla rat doesn't have enough interaction between those things. I mean, it does, but most people aren't smart enough to understand it. Okay, let's see what they do for Rat. Uh, improved blessing of mind is the same. Benediction is the same. Improved judgment is the same. Deflection is the same. They haven't changed anything in the first two tiers. Uh, improved seal of crusader. They make it the burning crusade version. Actually, they make this the Burning Crusade version. Oh, no. This is just melee. It's not melee and spell. I think it should be I think if they were to do this, which I think this probably is a decent change. I think it should be melee and spell. Seal the command. keep the iconic vanilla proc mechanic, but normalize it slightly so extremely slow weapons aren't overwhelmingly superior. I'd still deliberately make slow weapons better. Okay, you know whatever like over years I've said like under the hood changes for seal of command, I think one of the things that they can consider doing with seal of command, I don't actually think they should be normalized. I just think the proc rate should maybe go up a little bit. Like instead of seven procs per minute, if they made it nine procs per minute, conviction is the same. Pursuit of Justice four to eight% also reduce the chance for movement speed to be impaired by five to 10%. I think they should change B pursuit of justice is what I think. I think it should be two points but I think it should be 15% like in Burning Crusade but for two points. One point should be 7% and then two points should be 15%. Tier four eye for an eye spell criticals against you return 15 to 30% of damage. Keep it. It's weird. It's flavorful. It's extremely vanilla. I think eye for an eye probably needs a little bit of work. I think if they were to keep eye for an eye the way it is, it'd be okay. Improved rat aura. Increase rat damage by red aura damage by 25 50 75%. Additionally, attackers damage by retribution or have their attack power reduced for 5 seconds. I [music] think that's too much. And having three points of they did three points of improved red aura. I think this would be overpowered. I think this would be too strong. But it's basically like you either get improved red aura or you get vindication. Paladin's melee attacks have a chance to reduce target strength and agility, but works on bosses and as an attack power reduction. Now rep brings legitimate raid utility. Does this stack with demoralizing shout? I feel like you're basically killing demo shout. I I don't know. Making it work on bosses seems kind of overpowered. Sanctity aura increase holy damage dealt by 10%. Also increases paladin's physical damage by 5%. This fixes one of its awkward vanilla characters. Paladins are essentially the only class deriving meaningful offensive benefit from the or anyway in the classic guide. Note, smite priest. This seems too strong. I mean, if you have 5% more damage and 10% more holy damage and then you you get a double dip on your seal of command cuz your seal of command is getting its base damage from your weapon damage and then it reapplies again afterwards on the holy damage. I mean, that seems kind of broke. I feel like this is too strong. Well, then again, in in Burning Crusade, you have 2% damage increase. I don't know. I'm very like conservative about this stuff. Like I I'm I'm very careful about like not not the game not snowballing out of control. So I mean the numbers are something to tweak but it's it's the general concept. I think this would be too strong though. Increases damage dealt with two-handed melee weapons by 246. It's the same. I would move repentance upward with a 45se secondond cool down incapacity as human target for six. Interesting. I also think that repentance should get moved up in the tree. I think repentance as a 31 point talent is not good. Interesting. I agree with this. Critical, melee, and holy damage increase all physical damage by 3% for 8 seconds. Stacks up to five times. 15% maximum damage, but you have to maintain momentum. It's already like that. It's the same as it is now. Yeah, it's the same as it is now. Judgments of the wise. Your judgments restore 15% of their mana cost and the target cause the target become condemned for 8 seconds. Your next seal proc against a contempt target deals 5 to 10 to 15% additional damage. This makes the game play seal judge attack seal proc judge. That's already what it is rather than seal auto attack auto attack. Check, dude. God, it's crazy that the AI has been coerced by all the people that don't know how this class works. It's so funny. But this is insane. Condemning. This is This is so This is way too strong. Imagine you get a big seal of command judge and then it's going to take 15% more damage on your seal of command. That's crazy. 15% more damage on seal of command. 15% more damage from vengeance. So, condemn 15%. Vengeance 15%. Sanctity or 10%. after it gets a 5% increase from from the from what it says earlier. I think this is way too strong. And it says 31 point crusader strike. This is the controversial one. Uh 6 cool down, 5% base mana, instant strike causing 100% weapon damage. That's it. No holy power, no combo, no charge, no res giant secondary system. Just hit the guy with your giant hammer. Uh most importantly, well, it's not just cuz crusader tri your active seal as though you had performed a normal melee attack. That is what makes a redesign tree work. I don't like this. every time you crusader strike, you automatically get like a seal of command proc. I also think that it should be 100% we 6 second cool down, 5% base mana, 100% weapon damage. I think if it's 100% weapon damage, it should also have a spell power coefficient like a 43% spell power coefficient like the inst one. And I also think that it should refresh your judgments like before. Now, here's something else. Let's keep going. The resulting three idents own work. Healer tank DPS, holy caster, AoE tank, support DPS, efficient healing, mana from tanking, mana from judging, holy shock, holy shield, crusader strike. That's like their kind of like key capstone talent or whatever. Crit based healing, block reactive tank, seal judgment, melee, raid, viable. Yes. Uh, excellent. Situational, competitive, vanilla feeling. Crucial part is that viable doesn't mean wretch should beat warrior rogue DPS or pro should universally outperform warrior tanks. Uh, Rach 95% of top tier milk providing excellent palent. I actually agree with dude conceptually I agree with a lot of the stuff that the AI says. This is kind of funny. If you want I can take this and build an actual 1.12 31 point graphical talent tree for all three specs with the arrows icons pro. Yes. Let's see if it'll actually do this. This is so interesting. This is so funny. This is what it came up with. This is so funny. Okay. The arrows are in all the wrong spots. It doesn't have like It says this has to be a prerequisite for this which has has like that AI look. Yeah, this is a disaster. But very funny. Uh don't make it look like it's not about how it looks, it's about a visualization of it. Don't make it look like AI. Make it look like the talent trees from classic World of Warcraft. Let's just see. Let's just see. Let's just see. [laughter] It's [laughter] I mean it tried. That's funny. It did try. Look at Blessing of Kings. Why is Blessing of Kings just a picture of me with my mustache? Can you build this into an interactive talent calculator? Wait, yes. I built this a clickable vanilla style 51 point palent using the redesign holy protected red tree. Click a talent to add ranks. Right click or use this to remove ranks. Wait, it's actually doing it. Divine intellect. What? [laughter] Wait, that's so funny. It's not I mean, obviously it's not like a talent calculator we're used to, but this is pretty funny. You know, it works. Two, two, one for five. Nice. Cool. Emoji talents. [laughter] Dude, the talents are all emojis. [gasps] Improve judgment. It's a hammer emoji. Benediction is improved blessing of might. Amazing. Let me know what you guys think in the comments below. I was originally going to do this now and then somebody in chat had this funny idea and I was like, you know what? Let's do this instead. Next time I will go over and I will post my uh my version of classic plus paladin talents. What I would do with the paladin talents if I was 100% in charge of creating the classic plus paladin. I'll do that next time. Everything is SPF TV. And also, if you guys want Blizzcon coverage, this is going to be the place to be. We're going to have Twitch drops all weekend. I'm hosting a big event. Uh, you can go to blizzcon.sfban.tv. If you're going to be at Blizzcon, I'm hosting a big event Friday night, like a community mixer. I'm paying for it. We We got some sponsors and stuff. It's not fully covered, but it is a free community event for everybody going to Blizzcon. Unfortunately, I didn't get it completely covered, but look, hey, we're paying for it. We're giving back to the community. I want to host something for people. So, it's going to be a big like Mixer party thing. Uh, blizzcon.sfan.tv. TV if you want to go register for that. And uh if you're not going to Blizzcon, make sure to watch my stream on YouTube and on Twitch. There's going to be drops. There's going to be the best coverage of Blizzcon. The most well-crafted, wellthoughtout takes, okay, from Classic WoW guy for many years, okay? I love this game. I love Classic WoW. I do. and from all the way back in freaking from from the vanilla days kind of behind the scenes helping out with like original classic launch stuff until now. I'm very excited for what we'll finally get to see come Blizzcon or I'm excited to be incredibly disappointed. Who knows? Anyway, subscribe, like, leave a comment. We'll see you guys next time.
