How to Hold a Guitar Pick Correctly | Blackstar Potential Lesson
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
>> So, today we're going to talk about
something that's not super fun and not
super glamorous, but it is very, very
important and I can't put into words how
important this topic is. And that is how
to hold your pick correctly. So, if
you're a new guitar player and you're
getting a plectrum for the first time,
you're probably wondering, "What do I do
with it? Is there a right or a wrong way
to hold a plectrum?" In short, the
answer is no, but there are some best
practices we can do as guitar players to
ensure that what we're doing with our
hands translates to clean, good
technique. And a lot of that starts
right here with the plectrum. So, when
it comes to holding one of these things,
there are so many different ways we can
do that. The temptation is to try and
grip it as close to the back as
possible, but the problem in doing this
is that the plectrum sticking out quite
far allows for a lot of movement. And
what that means is when we then try to
pick things very precisely, this
additional movement in the plectrum is
going to translate to sloppy technique.
Now, if that's what you're going for and
that's an intentional thing, that's
completely fine.
The other extreme is to hold it really
close to the front end, but the problem
here is that your thumb can actually
mute the string by touching it rather
than the tip of the plectrum. So, I'm
going to show you what it sounds like to
pick with the pick held right at the
back, very sloppy, and then I'm going to
move right to the front and use my thumb
to essentially mute the string, which is
what would happen.

>> Now, you don't particularly want either
of those things happening to you because
the sloppy side of it, the plectrum is
kind of pinging out and hitting other
strings. And when I'm too close to the
tip, I'm just muting everything and
getting these weird little harmonics.
So, neither of those ideal for building
a good technique foundation. But, where
we should be focusing is getting just a
little bit of the plectrum showing. So,
if you're looking for very precise
picking, you probably want something
like this where there's maybe 2 or 3 mm
just sticking out. If you're going for
something strumming, maybe move your
thumb back to the middle of the pick and
have maybe a centimeter, but not enough
the pick is flopping around in your
hand. By using these best practices in
your own playing, you're actually going
to end up with much more control over
the plectrum, and when you come to
learning alternate picking and fast
picked lines, having that correct
control of the plectrum is going to make
the biggest difference. So, when you
start out, just spend a couple of
minutes familiarizing yourself with how
it feels comfortable to hold it. Don't
be too far back. Don't be too far
forward. Just find that sweet spot that
works for you, and it will make the
biggest difference to your playing in
the long run. If you enjoyed this
