How to Avoid Fret Buzz on Guitar | Blackstar Potential Lesson
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary

>> In the early stages of playing guitar,
one of the most infuriating, annoying
things you're ever going to come up
against is what you heard in the intro
there. That's called fret buzz. That's
when you press down in a certain way
that creates a buzzing sound rather than
the desired note that you want to hear.
Now, this is something that frustrates
many, many new guitar players, but this
is not the end of the world. There's
some simple things we can do to be aware
of this problem and correct it as we go
along. Now, when it comes to correcting
fret buzz, you first need to be aware
that it's happening. So, if you're
playing notes and you're hearing this
kind of sound,
>> [music]
>> you're probably experiencing fret buzz,
and this is the thing that we need to be
mindful of. So, we need to be able to
hear this in our own playing first of
all. Once we can hear it, then we can
fix it. To work on this yourself, take
any fret on the guitar. I'm going to use
this fret right here, the fifth fret of
the low E string. So, by pressing that
fret down, I should hear the note that I
hoped to hear.
>> [music]
>> The note is created by depressing the
string, the string then touching the
fret wire, shortening the length of the
overall string, therefore raising the
pitch. But, there are two main things
you need to be aware of when you're
doing this to ensure you're not getting
fret buzz. The first of which is the
position of the finger. So, the note is
sounded at the point where the string
contacts the fret wire. So, this is the
fifth fret,
but this fret wire here at the top end
of the fifth fret, that's where the
string connects to create the note. So,
the closer to that point I can get my
finger, the cleaner the note is going to
be. If I'm fretting at the back end
here, even though it's still making
contact, because the pressure is here,
the string is a bit looser at this
point, therefore more likely to buzz.
So, for best practice, you want to get
anywhere from the center of the fret
up to right behind the fret,
but without going on top of it.
>> [music]
>> Cuz when you go on top of it, you're
going to end up buzzing again. So, try
and get your finger anywhere from the
center right up to just behind the fret
wire. And the second thing is how hard
you're pressing. If you're pressing too
lightly,
>> [music]
>> you're going to get a bit of buzzing.
What you don't want to do is overexert
yourself and squeeze the guitar to
death. That's not the goal here. But,
one thing that can really help is to
just rest your finger above the fret
that you're trying to play and pick the
string like so.
And you'll hear a muted note.
As you do that, just gradually increase
the pressure until you get to the point
where the note sounds clear.
>> [music]
>> That's how much pressure you need to
apply to make that note sound. So, try
those two things out. Those will make
the biggest difference to fret buzz. The
positioning, get it close to the center
or right behind the fret wire, and how
hard you're pressing. Don't press too
soft. Don't press too hard. Find that
sweet spot like I just showed you there.
And all your fret buzz problems will go
away.
