Video summary
The ICANN public comment process is designed to allow everyone a chance to influence policies within the domain name system, ensuring that contributions are both simple and open to all participants. To begin this engagement, individuals can either create a new account on the ICANN homepage or log in using their existing credentials. Once registered, users gain access to view all public comment proceedings, which include closed, open, and upcoming sessions. These proceedings typically remain open for at least forty days, providing ample time for stakeholders to review proposals and submit their feedback.
Participants are encouraged to select the specific open proposals that interest them and read through the documents carefully to understand the rationale behind each suggestion. Before submitting comments, it is important to utilize the additional resources available on each proceeding's web page to ensure informed contributions. The process welcomes all forms of feedback; whether an individual agrees with a proposal and wishes to voice support, or disagrees and has suggestions for improvement, their input is valued. This inclusive approach ensures that diverse perspectives are considered in shaping the future of domain name policies.
After submissions are received, ICANN reviews them to identify key themes and publishes a summary report to synthesize the collective feedback. The team responsible for opening the proceeding then addresses this input and proposes next steps, which vary depending on the specific issue at hand. Once a proceeding is closed, further details regarding the outcomes can be found in the outcome section of the relevant web page. This structured follow-up ensures transparency and keeps stakeholders informed about how their comments influenced the final decisions.
For those seeking more information or wishing to engage further with these processes, the ICANN website serves as the primary resource. By visiting ic.org, individuals can learn more about how to participate effectively and stay updated on ongoing discussions. This open dialogue fosters a collaborative environment where the global community actively shapes the policies that govern the internet's infrastructure, reinforcing the principle that domain name system governance is a shared responsibility.
