Hiking 100 Miles Through the Yorkshire Dales | The Centurion Walk

Video summary

The video documents a hiker's challenging first day on the Centurion Walk, an ambitious 100-mile circular route through the Yorkshire Dales and Howgill Fells that lacks a single defined path, requiring walkers to navigate freely while maintaining a total distance of exactly one hundred miles. The journey begins with significant logistical hurdles due to extreme heatwave conditions, prompting the hiker to switch from a traditional backpacking system to an Exos 48 hydration pack to avoid direct contact between hot fabric and their back. Despite starting late in York and facing blistering temperatures that push into the low thirties Celsius, the walker manages the initial ascent of Pen-y-Gent, noting it as one of the busiest sections on a bank holiday Sunday before venturing off the main trail to explore remote landscapes and avoid crowds. As the hike progresses through valleys and over ridges, several practical issues arise that test the hiker's resolve, most notably severe foot pain caused by ill-fitting shoes with poor stitching quality and uncomfortable insoles. The intense heat exacerbates these problems, leading to raw skin on the ankles and a reliance on blister plasters for survival after only six miles of walking. To mitigate exposure to the relentless sun, which has left parts of his body scorched, he utilizes sparse shade found along dry riverbeds and under scattered trees while carrying an unusually heavy load of food and camera equipment intended to document this largely unrecorded route. The terrain varies from steep descents into villages like Kettlewell to boggy sections that turn into "bog myrtle" in summer conditions, offering a diverse but physically demanding experience far removed from the comfort of paved paths. By late afternoon on day one, exhausted by the combination of heat, elevation gain, and foot trauma, the hiker decides against staying at local pubs or hostels to conserve energy for future days when temperatures are expected to rise even further. Instead, he pushes up toward Great Whernside to find a higher altitude campsite where cooler evening air awaits, setting up his lightweight tent on rocky ground despite the difficulty of finding flat space in such rugged terrain. The day concludes with reflections on the necessity of adapting plans due to weather and physical limits, acknowledging that while the first leg was grueling and left him feeling "knackered," successfully navigating this unique loop without cutting corners is essential to completing the true Centurion challenge.

Hello and welcome to another video. It's hotter than the inside of a pop-tart. I've got a 100mile loop to do in the wonderful Yorkshire Dales. So, I'm going to pop on my phone voice and introduce you to the Centurion. See you on the other side. The Yorkshire Dales Centurion is a demanding 100mile circular hike. It loops through the dramatic and remote landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and the Howgill Fells. Join me as I take in the scenery, the history, the people, and the weather of this beautiful county. Welcome to the Yorkshire Dales and welcome to the Centurion. Hello, welcome to another video. I'm out in my beautiful Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales, and I'm taking on a 100mile circular loop. It's called the Centurion Walk or the Centurion Way. Very much like the Trident Way in the Lake District. It's a 100mile loop. There is no set path. You can pretty much make it up as you go so long as you do a 100 miles in this loop and it's very busy. It's a bank holiday Sunday. There's a steady stream of people going up and down Penny Gent. So, this will be the busiest part for me for today, but I didn't want to miss out the views and just topping out on the top of Penny Gent. So, we'll take that in. Then, I'm going to keep going away from the people and we're going to do this 100 mileer. I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for joining me. Let's go. I set off from York this morning at around4 8. Got here for about quart 10. It took about 2 hours. So, it's a little bit of a late start today with it being uh it was about half 10 11 when I set off. But for some reason, it seems to always happen when I book in a long distance hike. It lands on a heat wave. And we're in the middle of a heat wave now. It's used to get into 30s. So, it's hot. I've got plenty of water, plenty of electrolytes, but I'm looking forward to it. I need this one, mate. I say that a lot, but I do. It's been a while since we've put together a a good few days on the bounce. So, I am looking forward to it. I didn't use me Fel Raven backpack. I had a change of heart last minute because I thought, well, it's going to be roasting hot and I just want that that backflow system. I don't want a backpack that's touching my back in this heat. That was the main decider really. So, as to why I went with the Exos 48, worn, as you'd expect, on such a such a popular route. Go on. Go on. Yes, mate. There's not much you can find online about this route. There's no YouTube videos or uh trip reports. And there was one photo montage that I found, but I won't really give you much. So, this will be, unless there's someone just in front of me by a couple of days doing exactly the same thing. This should be the first video online to showcase this hike. Not a lot of people know about it. I'm going to call it the Centurion way. No, because there is a Centurion way. I'm going to call it the Centurion. Just like that. Centurion walk doesn't do it justice. I know it is a walk, but a walk to me just says I'm off for a walk. You know, just off for a walk before me dinner. The Centurion walk. The Centurion Stroll. Nah, it's got to be like the Centurion way or just the Centurion. That's it. That's the one in it. I've said Centurion too much and it's feels like a weird word now. It's beautiful, isn't it? Meure, mate. I've visited Penny Gent a few times and the three of the peaks and we've done I've done the odd bits and bobs, but this hike takes me on places I've never been before. Last minute change of uh change of plan with footwear, mate. Me too. put maybe 50 miles on them and uh they were cutting my inside of my ankle. Don't know if it was like the shoe itself or just that particular shoe, if you know what I mean. Not the brand of shoe, but there was maybe a bit of stitching loose or something. I couldn't really see, but it's uh yeah, it was chewing up me uh my ankle making it bleed. So, I've gone with ultras. They're these uh with gators, so I'm not going to get any bits of kek in me shoes chewing up my feet. And I've never used these ultras before. I can't believe I've gone back to them. But there we are. First real leg pumper. You're straight out at gate with this bike. It is. It's a lot coming down from in that valley, but I'm a couple of miles in now, so I feel okay. The first couple of miles or first couple of K with any like arduous thing like this, and I'm always thinking, what the hell am I doing? I can't do this. I'm tired. Even just going for a jog, first couple of K, I'm like, why do people do this? How do people jog? But then you get over that couple of K mark and it all just gets a lot easier. Steady stream of piss sacks all just making their way to the top. And I am one of those piss sacks. not sticking about on Penny Gent. It's riddled. It's riddled, mate. A lot of people. I was tempted to cut across and away from everybody else and cut off this corner, but I'm afraid that if I don't stick to the route that I've planned out, it's not going to be 100 miles. And that's the whole point of this challenge. It's that it's the it's a centurion in it, the century, the the 100 mileer. And so if I cut any corners and stuff and I get to end, it's like 99.5 miles. Ah, it's I'm just going to be running around car park for half a mile. If you wanted to save a little bit of time or save your legs, you could get the train to Horton in Ribblesdale and then join the Penine Way and cut this um Penny Gent section out if you wanted to save your legs or you know, you weren't bothered about checking out the views and stuff, but you might struggle to do it in 100 miles. Uh the route, but I did find some online and then I've plotted my own on the OS map. So, I am going to share this route. You can do what you want with it, mate. Uh, I'll leave it downstairs so you can go and check it out. It's on my OS maps, but I've not hiked it. So, this is me hiking it. I don't know if you can tell. Skyark, loads of them about beautiful blue skies. Yeah, there might be sections that are uh a bit rubbish or uh closed or whatever. So, I guess this will be the guide for that and let you know what works, what doesn't work because we're going to be doing map time at the end of each day just to have a closer look. But I'm feeling strong. It was nice to do penny again just to get the legs working um figure out me bag and and stuff like that. So, I'm feeling like I'm in the zone now. Giving me flashbacks to when I did it barefoot. These big slabs of stone were just wonderful to walk on. As you can see, look, the Penine Way, Horton in Ribblesdale, one and a half miles that way. So, you could just walk along here. It's pretty flat. One and a half miles. It'll bring you out here. You don't have to go up there. But that is the official Centurion route. So, get yourself up there. You'll enjoy yourself. Three peaks is that way, which we've been before. And this way is a new way for me. So, I'm excited. Say goodbye to all the people. And that's whole pot. There's nowhere to swim, but water does fill it up and run. It runs down here, but it's dry. Dry at the moment. Am I going re way? I don't know. I'm just going to follow this dry river. But that was cool. That's like just a big sinkhole sort of a deal, isn't it? Just a big hole. This is a path less trodden. And we've got off the penny gent circuit. And we're off up here. I can see some running water up there. Behave. I don't think it's deep enough. Re. No. Although you could lie down. I mean, looks a bit looks a bit grim. You could lie down in that bit if you're if you wanted to. I've gone wrong way. See if making any mistakes, but I got carried away following this river cuz I'm thirsty and uh hot. So, I'm just like, but we have to go back and then cut across. I've done a I've done a mistake. We're going off road, but it's it's tough walking. There's all these little ankle breaking nodules and then like big holes holes and nodules just till I get over here and then pick up the path again. I thought it got quiet. Got lost. Decided to have a cliff bar for morale. This is lovely. Been meandering along here for a while now. There's no one about. It's a heat wave and it's a bank holiday and there's not a sausage. What I love about just hiking a lot is dialing in the kit and knowing what's working and what's not. And there's a few things. Well, one thing is my poles. I'm using my ultra light sort of like fast packing poles which go into three bits which don't they don't hold into this uh Osprey pole carrying system very well. They're all dangling about and stuff and they they just piss me off. So they've gone inside a bag which isn't ideal because if you if you just come up to a downhill bit and you want to use them, you got to take your bag off. So, they won't be getting used again with this bag. I'm carrying enough food as well to last me the journey. So, it is a bit of a heavy bag for from what I'm used to. A lot of people might class this still as very lightweight. What I would recommend is topping out on Penny Gent and then I did look at that way when I was up there, but sort of follow this ridge along to the top of Plver Hill. You're going to get better views. You It's going to be less busy. It's a bit of a steep drop, but it' make for a lovely walk. You'd get better views and then just drop straight down here and it'll bring you to this point. I've had to stop because my ankle's hurting. Not like in the muscle, but the skin. Like some was rubbing. I was getting a hot spot. I've looked and yeah, all skin's come off it. I'm thinking, how was that happened? I've only done like six miles. So, I'm looking at new shoes for where it's rubbing. I saw this sticker. I'm like, "Oh, that must be it." It's obviously a different material. It's got little edges on it. No worries. I'll take it off. It's I think it's sewn in. Proper glued in. You know, people who make trail runners are just having a laugh, mate. They're just all knocked up in like China or Vietnam, whatever. Are they that good? I bet they're cheap as out. And they're well over 100 quid and you just think, what are you doing? None of them last more than a year. And it's not just a company. I'm not like, it's not about, oh, this company is better than that company. I they're all the same in my book. Them topos I got, I thought, "Oh, brilliant. These will be good. Just chewing my ankle up just one of them in one bit and I couldn't get away from it." So, it was like it was a bit lopsided. And another thing while I'm on one of these shoelaces came out of the box with a knot tied in it so tight that it was almost like it was done by Robocop or something done it. Couldn't get the knot out. It's still in it in that in that lace came like that. And the laces aren't as good as on the Olympus. Anyway, I'm not This isn't about a review on these, but it, you know, well, look, can you see? I don't know if you will be able to, but it's, you know, that skin coming off already and it hurts. And I'm only 6 milesi deep. That's a concern. Why would you just glue? Why would you glue the sticker that just says like UK? Put it on the tongue. You walies. Look at that. Nothing on tongue where they normally go. I know what we'll do. You know where they have that big bone that's really important from outside of foot. Just whack it there. Just whack it there. But sir, won't they get big blisters and it rip all skin? Just whack it there, mate. Look, it's 5 to 5. I've got stuff to do this weekend. Put sticker on ankle bait and let's go. Let's get to a house quick. It's pissed me off, mate. That is an absolute piss taking fact, isn't it? Putting that there and it's it's destroyed my ankle. I've put a compede over where skin's coming off, but you can just feel some just like really working that area. Is it that sticker or is it just the top of the shoe? Oh well. Well, I'm six mile. I could turn back. If I turn back to save me feet, then yeah, good. I've not hurt me feet. and uh failed later down the line or whatever. But then mate, I've come a long way just to get here to get to start point mate. All the way up north and then two trains. But that's where we are, mate. You look like a bagad. Look at that thing. You is everything all right? I was getting ripped for my haircut. Look at that lad. What does your barber do for a living? I'm in danger of going a bit negative cuz painful ankle. These uh Alt are getting worn till the end of this hike whenever that is and then we'll review them. If they pull it back and they stop hurting and it was just like teething teething issues, we're fine. But if they keep going and nibbling through the ankle and it's it becomes a a tough gig. They're going to get ceremoniously winged recycled. But first I'm going to throw them then I'm going to get them and recycle them or bit of burn them. Chuck them fire at home bonfire. See late there's I'm waffling We don't need this. Right. Stack the ankle off in my mind. That's that's inevitable. That's fine. It's fine. Look at this. The matter at hand, what really matters at hand is just the vast space of the Yorkshire Dales. No one about. If you do want to do this hike yourself, it's not going to be as busy as it is today. This is as busy as it'll get a heatwave bank holiday. And it was only that first bit that was busy. Since I've come down this way, I've not seen a soulmate and it is good times. So, we're going to walk through this valley for I think it's about 15 miles and then we're off up into the moss and that is where I was hoping to get to today. It was a It was a tough decision with which tent to bring because doing the Trident in the Lake District, which is similar to this, the 100 mile loop, I could take me DCF tent, which is like it does stick out like a sore thumb, like bluish silvery blue. But you're in the Lake District and it's kind of expected. So, as long as you uh pitch late and leave early, it's kind of cool. But it's a little bit different when you get into the dales. I don't think there was as many people backpacking and wild camping. So I was like, maybe I should bring something that's a little bit more stealth. And I weighed it up and I thought, you know what, mate, it's going to be cuz it's 100 mile. It's going to be a tough one. Let's just go for the lightest tent I've got. So I did. I brought in me with my DCF tent, the X-M Yorkshire Dales National Park shoulder work. Is Ed going? No. It's one of them like little springloaded lovely behavior. Nice and soft underfoot. Pretty flat. Just skirting through this valley. It's rather wonderful, Jeff. What's this? I see. It's seen better days. Look at that. Chain's gone. It's just got a bit of string on there. It'll do it job, won't it? It'll do it job. It'll do it job to keep these ladies in. Ladies. Okay, these little lambs have still got tails on. Look, you can see where they've been tied off. The other one's going the other foot at the back. Can't be bit sticker then. It's just the edges of these. Man, this trouble this. It's never happened to me. So early on in a hike where my feet have just just getting absolutely traumatized. Broke skin on my ankle on this side then on the heel on this side. Day one. Day one. These socks are a bit higher. They'll cover my little saw zones. I'm going to run out of comped at this rate. It's a real game changer when feet go. It's no longer like just coming along there when my feet were like burning and each step was hurting. I was just like this is enjoyable. I should this should be the glorious first day cuz it is absolutely stunning. But all I could think about was me feet. Right. Anyway, I'm being negative out because me feet and blaming it on shoes. It is their fault. That's why you're blaming on them. That's fine. That's too much. That's too much. A full camera crew. I shouldn't or what do I should need one go one action camera few batteries maybe a another charger but for some reason for some reason I've got three cameras a drone a mic setup two power banks flex tail pump. Too much, mate. But too much stuff. I just thought I couldn't decide to bring us. I'll bring it all. Bring it all. We're going to be making a good film anyway. We might need extra cameras. What if one breaks? We'll get some nice drone shots. Silly sausage. We should focus on just feet. Have nice feet. Feels a bit better. Let's go. That's heavier than any bag I've taken on a long distance hike ever. Heaviest bag yet. Open access. Bridal way. Public bridal way. Just this valley and there's like two farms in it. Backer beyond mate. Just have a little nose around houses like what are you up to? What's the script? Do you get out? Do you see people or do you just hang out in valley? So, I'm guessing I'll go down here and go down the valley and it'll be through the fields, you know, like there'll be a lot of gates. You do get these areas in the dales where it's a high a high concentration of gates. I don't like the way me watch beeps at me to tell me to go tells me I'm going wrong way. But, I mean, am I Got to go this way. And I could get shot. And that's where I'm going. I mean, it almost feels like I shouldn't be doing it. You know, when you go through a farm that's in the middle of nowhere just cuz there's an old sign saying you can, and you can, but it just feels very intrusive. What are you doing here? I'm actually um I'm doing the Centurion. I'm doing the Centurion actually, mate. So, pipe down cuz I'm doing the Centurion walk. Are these positive signs? Yeah. Public bridal way, mate. You can't What can you do? You can't Oh, it's Smells like it's recently been crissed. I mean, he's keeping his gates in good nick. You enjoyed that. It's pretty good. There we go. Oh, mate. No, this ain't the sort of farmer that I thought it was. I thought it was going to be someone s rocking chair with shotgun. Whit bale band holding his uh cut off denims up. But that looks like a quite a swanky house. Maybe wellto-do farmers car park. Honesty box. But is that honestly a car park? Bit of a hole there. Oh, this is nice. Look right. Just a little bit of a dainty chain there. This is a nice little path, isn't it? Smells like wild garlic as well. Oh, I wish that was deep enough to swim in. See, it's sweltering, mate. 30 odd degrees. Teaming with fish. I wanted something with that's diverse. A hike where one minute you're up tops with your your 360 vistas, then you're walking through a farm, then you're by a wonderful stream, then you're going through little villages. I think they're my favorite. I do I love the remote ones and I love the ones up in the mountains and stuff, but there's a lot to be said for diversity. I thought I'd be in that field going gate gate cows trouble at mill vet bills gate gate gate but uh I'm not I'm here on this wonderful bit of grass by this wonderful this wonderful river that's just teasing me is teasing me with its sounds and its sights but there's nowhere deep enough to plunge The plum he favors this method around here. Oh, this is what I thought it was going to be. These things. Look at this. If you've not seen this before, very thin gap in the dry stone wall. Left one hanging out there for me to go over and it should be on big spring and it's leaning this way as well. So, you've got gravity and the spring. I'm not going to fly it across cuz it's a bit of an old thing. But there you go. That could have been my only chance. for a swim or a dip today and it's and it's gone now. Okay. Well, I hold out hope that towards the end of the day we can find somewhere. There's a lot of gate work just fine. Whoa. Lot of GW. Get on up. What's this? Old school. Look at that. Oh, he's resorted to one of these, but back in the day it was this. And the latch would have been on some there, but Oh, and it's back there. That's the original. Lovely bit of stuff. Proper iron gate. It's nice that ain't it? Put a bit of effort into it, ain't there? That's how dry is not a drop. Look at that. I bet when it's flowing, that's a nice little deep bit there. I'm torturing myself. I'm going to try and get to Ancliffe, which is a few more miles this way. There is a pub, but there is a little tempter of a pub there as well. I don't know what it's called or what the vibe is. It's bank holiday Sunday, so it's going to be busy. But if it's nice and it's got a nice beer garden, then I feel like I I've done enough miles just to have one one frosty beverage. Cuz as as always, if it if it gets to end of day and that coincides with my end of the day and a pub, then definitely going to get a couple of wets on or at least one wet. It's bank holiday, mate. Can't not have an ice cold wet bank holiday. All this river as well is making me more thirsty cuz it's bone dry. Dry as a bone. Post Malone. Uh why is it wetter on the path than it is in the river? A lot of bugs. Cuz there's a lot of stagnant water there. So, there's a lot of bugs hatching and doing a bit around my face and mouth. The road less traveled, mate. Oh my god, so many bugs. I'll tell you what though, down here there is a couple of bits where these trees give me the first bit of shade that I've had all day and it's nice. That thing is doing me in. Don't bother. You just stay there. There's a few on path. I'm going to have to deal with these just cuz it's a hot day. You lads have got big coats on. You don't need to tussle in this heat. It's too hot. Get yourself in that muddy puddle and chill out. He knows. Look, he's heard. He's heard rumors. Bottled it. Every single one of them lots bottled it. And I was there for it as well. Bottled it. The lot you got same jumper on as well. Look at you. Some of these are well thin. I'll probably get through, but biceps are struggling. So, wait, what? Yeah, if you're a bit of a unit, that might be something to consider. Or if you've got one of them bags that's as wide as it is tall, you know, like the Carmore SF45, very wide when it's got the rocket pouches on it, that I'd struggle to get through there. You could take it off and just walk through with it, I guess. But if you've got that sort of a width in built into you like what I mean you're a unit basically you just whether you're a unit it doesn't matter gym unit fat unit just natural unit unit then there's a couple of them that might you might need to get lubed up to get through them but that's that's your problem mate it's not my You'll be all right. I'm just here to pre-warn you so that when you do get stuck in one of them, you can like he did warn me about this and that's why I brought my lad larger cell up through roll yourself off into this air house cuz it's a thirsty work all this hiking in a heat wave. I'll tell you that for now. For better or for worse, the falcon in is closed. The falcon in incliff is closed. So, we bat on kettle well. Two and a4 miles up and over this thing. Medic coming out of valley. It's just getting steeper. Just had to take on some water cuz it's got a headache. I think just the heat wave all day on my bons has just cooked my brain a bit. There are no long sections in the shade. Down by that river was little spurts of shade, but that's it. Some sort of a woodland on the side of this massive hill that I'm going to go through. I'm out of breath, mate. I need to preserve my energy and not talk to you. My bon is hurting. That's all I wanted to say cuz that thing mustn't grumble though. It is beautiful. That little bit of shade. That is nice. It's only done about 13 14 miles and uh feeling it. So I think the sun is zapped me and feet are a bit chewed up. So I am feeling it. When I stand in this shade now, I'm just Oh, yeah. I realize I'm knackered. Day one. Day one's chewed me up, ain't it? Day one's had its way with me. Woof. It's okay cuz it's forecast to be hotter tomorrow. I might not even get a pint. I might just get a pint of Coke or something. sugary and cold because a wet an actual wet right now could what I'm thinking is don't let a slip become a fall and one wet just wouldn't touch the sides and it would lead to two three who knows next thing you you know next minute it's just an absolute wetathon and you don't know where you're going and what you're doing So I might stay clear for the first night. Bit of dappled shade and it's uphill. It's quite quite spectacular which definitely breaks it up a little bit. Gives you something to look at and gives me a little bit of shade. So I'm I welcome it. Oh, this isn't shade. Look. Oh my wonderful world. Look at that. That's nice. That is nice. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So green. Feel that's just been up the at my back for hours cuz it has w sapping me. Still doing a bit, aren't I? It's a hen harrier. Believe it's a henario or is it an owl? Oh, is it an owl? It's lovely. Look at it. The back of my neck is El Scorchio Medic and it's just been at my back for hours, back of me legs, back of me neck complaining about the sun after a winter where he complained about the winter. Yeah. Yeah. It's vast. Vast of the Moheakans onward. Do I camp up here and then head down into the village tomorrow morning? There's the village. We got to scramble down here. So, I didn't stay up tops. As you can see, I'm coming down through the rocks, descending on the village. It is a bit late in the day to be descending on the village as it is 8:00. I'm all out of water now and I've not passed anything that I could filter for a while. So, I'm hoping either the toilets or the pub have a tap where I can just fill up and then I'll just have to keep going out of the side. I don't even think I've got time for a a coke or out. Public toilet's mush. Look at that. Got one boozer. We've got two boozers. There's the village in the background. There's the ridge we came over. And there's the sunset. The further I go up here, the more I'm sort of chasing it as if I had enough of it today. It's quart to 9. I'm glad I didn't stop over on that ridge. cuz I've had to do all that while I've just done it morning and thankfully I've done it now and fill me water bottles up. So it's all good. Steep coming out of there. Gassing. Okay. So4 to 9. I'll make sure there's no cattle about. Try and find a flat bit. That's it gone. It's quite a relief to see the back of it. They are filmmaker at Century. Also, there's no flat bits. Diego flatbread. So, I've just got to keep going. There you go. Can you hear him? Just getting surrounded by curus. They must be nesting up here trying to scare me off. And it's worked. I'm out of here. I think this is a a youth hostel. Yeah. Scouts and camping barn. Not bad. They're not using it today. Bank holiday and it's empty. I'm doing it. Peter, I'm making a push for top of Great Wide. The heat really has zapped me. It's like the harder you work at the beginning, the easier it is at the end is how I look at it. So like what I do today and tomorrow I don't have to do in the in the days following. Look at this. I might get a bit. I've still still got to climb that. But I'm so close, mate. There's no point in stopping, is there? I might as well go and top out on up there. Maybe pitch my tent up there and then I might get some nice skies in the morning. It'll be a lot cooler up there. And that's what I'm looking for. Right. This is a bit bog Myrtle this. It's hard to know where to go. I think tomorrow is going to be a little bit more remote, but we'll see. Whenever we do the map times, we'll work it all out. Wow. Yes. Tough slog. Very tough. I'll get me tent set up. Hardly seems worth it. Could I just get me quilt around me and just now? You never know. It might cack it, might it? Weather might just turn on me. Anyway, great wor side. Not bad. Not a bad shift. I don't know. I'll have to have a look. It's about 19 miles. I've just dropped down off the summit into all these stones and I'm wind's picked up a bit. Is it going to be sheltered behind here? This is relatively flat. This stone might protect me a bit. Not asked. But I'm going to get his tent set up. There. There it is. I'll have to show you it morning cuz you can't really see. There it is. Right, where are we? So, I got the train from York to Leeds. So if you get the train to leads, it's only like 20 quid and you can get the train to Horton and Ribblesdale which is here. And this is the start of the Yorkshire three peaks. Lots of people, but it was a bank holiday, so it's to be expected a nice gradual incline as we head to the top of Penny Gent. And you can see this is our first leg pumper here. You can see the contours are very close together, but that is a good tester. Good lung buster to start off proceedings. Topped out on Penny again. Didn't hang around cuz there was quite a lot of humans. So off we go. We joined the penine way for a short period of time. And down here, this is whole pot. That big hole in the ground which does fill with water after a after a heavy spell of rain. I went the wrong way here. I just followed up here cuz I was thirsty and I was hot. So, I just sort of accidentally meandered up here following the waters and then had to cut across here back onto me path along. This is the signpost. So if you were going to do this and instead of coming down here, you wanted to stay on top of the ridge and taking in the views, you could come along here and then drop down this steep bank and pick up a penine journey here. This is where me started to absolutely blow up. Um but but we move we move uh down here through this lovely farm and then we hit this river. Lovely walking along here. The riverbed was dry. That's how uh that's how hot it's been. There's a through Linton. There is an option of a pub here. There is a campsite as well. You could hold up here for your first night and call it. That would be a good little day. Now I pushed on still following the river and we get to ironcliffe. The pub here was closed but again another pub hotel options for your first night. I decided to push up here. This was very steep but lovely through this woodland up onto the tops. Lots of birds. Saw an owl. I believe it was an owl. loads of curus and then I was thinking shall I stay up here? I had to sit down and have a proper um and ah but my water levels were low and I thought let's just try and push on. So we did through kettle well managed to fill my water bottles up in the toilet here again. Another great place to stop. There was three aouses here. So you're spoiled for choice. I uh thought it best not to stop in any of them and we pushed on out of Kettlewell and from here I was looking for somewhere to camp. I made a mistake here. I went up here and then had to cut across. It was a bit of a nightmare actually getting across here and then up onto the tops. This is the scout camp. Pushed on through there. It does start to get a bit boggy up here. So in any other time other than summer, it's going to be a bit of a bog myrtle. So be aware of that. Final push. My legs were tired. My feet were a bit broken. It was a big day in the saddle in that heat. And uh this is great wor side. And this is where we stopped for night one. The heat wave is forecast to kick into overdrive tomorrow. So, I've got that to look forward to, but we'll take it as it comes. Right, thanks for watching. Take care of yourselves and I'll see you soon.
