Video summary
The video documents the final leg of a seven-part hiking pilgrimage undertaken by the creator in collaboration with Northern Monk Brewery, marking the conclusion of his "Patrons Project" series which began several years ago. Instead of simply drinking beer at each location, this seventh installment transforms into an ambitious journey linking three specific breweries: Manchester, Leeds, and York. The route involves taking a train to Manchester before hiking through the Peak District along canal paths and bridleways toward Leeds, with plans to continue on foot or by rail from there to finish in York. This unique approach allows for scenic walking rather than just urban trekking, though it presents significant challenges as the creator enters an intense UK heatwave forecasted to reach over 30 degrees Celsius.
The hike is fraught with physical difficulties exacerbated by the extreme weather conditions and difficult terrain. The creator struggles immensely with blistering sun exposure, which causes his skin to tingle and makes prolonged outdoor activity dangerous, forcing him to seek shade constantly or even consider aborting parts of the journey for safety reasons. He also faces relentless attacks from nettles and brambles that tear at his legs, as well as aggressive midges in wooded areas like Magic Wood Cafe. Despite these hardships, he manages to complete a significant portion of the first stage between Manchester and Leeds, covering roughly 62 miles before deciding against pushing further into the worst heat on foot. His gear choices are highlighted throughout, including an old-school Fjällräven backpack that fits his aesthetic but lacks modern airflow features, which becomes crucial as he sweats profusely in the high temperatures.
Ultimately, the creator admits to failing his original goal of hiking all 104 miles from Manchester directly to York due to the unbearable heat and physical toll it takes on him after midday. He stops at Northern Monk Leeds for a celebratory pint but decides not to attempt the final stretch into York immediately, acknowledging that pushing through temperatures expected to hit 32-33 degrees would be reckless. Rather than viewing this as a total failure of his character or passion project, he reframes it by suggesting alternative ways to complete the pilgrimage using bikes or trains for certain sections, emphasizing that the spirit of the journey remains intact regardless of the mode of transport used between pubs. The video concludes with him reflecting on the six-year history of the collaboration, expressing gratitude to Northern Monk and his audience while celebrating the completion of this specific chapter before moving forward with a modified plan to finish the route later when conditions are safer.

Hello, welcome to another video. A few
years ago, I started a journey with
Northern Monk Brewery. It was a seven
can journey where I would be on the beer
cans. We've done six.
It's time for the seventh, the gold
edition. It's taking a long time to get
here and a lot has happened in my life
since the first can that we did. So, I
thought what I'll do is I'll get the
train to Manchester, we'll go to
Northern Monk in Manchester, hike to
Leeds, to the Northern Monk in Leeds,
and then we'll hike to York and finish
in the Northern Monk in York. So, let's
go get the train from Manchester and
start this final adventure.
Northern Monk, Manchester, and the start
of the Northern Monk pilgrimage. You
could get a jar in here. You'd have to
set off a bit later if you wanted to do
that, but
let's go.
Regular viewers will know uh
my history with Northern Monk and the
fact that I've done six
cans with them and it's time for my
final seventh beer. The Patrons Project
are only seven beers
and this is my last one, so I had a bit
of a think and I thought do you know
what? They have a Refectory in
Manchester, one in Leeds,
one in York, and I can walk from
Manchester
to Leeds to York,
linking the Northern Monks. So, it is
something a bit different. At the
moment, I'm currently following the
canal.
So, it's pretty nice. And then in 15
miles time, we'll head up into the Peak
District.
I'm excited for this one. And then I'm
going to put some big miles in and at
the end of it all, when we get to York,
we have a pint.
I didn't weigh much at all. Feels light.
I'm like I'm thinking have I forgot
something? Feels suspiciously light.
After me last one,
me last hike in the Yorkshire Dales,
I've stripped it all back on this one.
It's pretty light and it is the
Fjallraven lightweight backpack. I've
done a review on this.
I'm not going to leave it anywhere cuz
you can it's online somewhere or
someone else might have done one, but
anyway, these All right, it's a video in
itself, mate, the old footwear, but I've
gone with the ultras.
It's these.
I'll put it in a nice graffiti style
there, look. It's the It's the ultras.
It's these. Oosh.
This yeah, you can tell it's going to be
a good video when it's
that level of production.
I'm off in the real, look.
Different, isn't it?
But, the beauty is
I get to follow the canal.
So, it's quite bonny.
And you've always got the chance of a
kingfisher. Linking different pathways
and bridleways together, so
it should be aesthetically pleasing.
We're not just walking around streets in
cities. It should all be
pretty good looking, guttingly, and it
is guttingly.
Joey D was supposed to be with me. I
didn't book him and it was booked in for
weeks and then
he's gone mucking about in a skate park
with bends and he's done his leg in and
he couldn't He just physically couldn't
do it. But, we've got 104 miles to York.
63 miles to Leeds. We're just coming
into another heatwave.
So, there's a classic.
Another heatwave. I promised myself I
wouldn't do them again, and here we are.
So, get as much done today because the
next few days, 30-odd degrees.
It's There's been enough time since the
Yorkshire hike that I've forgotten how
bad it is hiking in them conditions. I'm
sure I told myself that I wouldn't do
big miles in that sort of heat, but I've
forgotten. So, that's the beauty of
life.
Uh what's this? Someone's got a little
setup, look. That's nice. What's he got?
Euro hike.
Decent.
Oh, [ __ ] [ __ ] myself.
That's a nice little setup, isn't it?
And lots of real rubbish, look. That's
all it is.
So, he gets some Euro hike, has his
little fire and that.
Or her.
And then this is where all the old
sleeping bags and
rubbish and all that after you've [ __ ]
yourself can go.
And there you are. Nice little
nice little nest.
Different, isn't it? I'm loving it.
Normally hiking out in wilderness,
and now I'm doing the canal path,
Manchester.
Got to keep me wits about me in case any
of these
canal path wizards want to have a piece
of it.
Cuz I'm walking out with GoPro and phone
out using map and that. Just
target.
Come get me. I'm aware of my
surroundings and my capabilities and how
fast I am at running. You know, if you
get There's a group
a group of youths, and they flank you,
you need to be
you need to be moving
like a like a salmon or a gecko.
Just move, and then just do something
mad
that they're not going to expect. You
start acting like a gecko.
>> [laughter]
>> I just try and get away, but try and
like think that you think you can climb
up a wall, and then they're all watching
you, and you're just like your hands are
just sliding off the wall, and you're
like, "Oh, no, no, no, I've got this.
Ah."
Me get
>> [snorts and laughter]
>> And then just And then just stay still
next to wall
uh thinking that you've changed color to
the wall.
And then um when they talk to you or try
and rob you, just don't acknowledge
them.
Cuz they're you're invisible.
And that is uh city safety 101. This
could well be one of the football
stadium That's Man City, and it's
Etihad. There's no time for division at
the moment because we're all one.
There's just England.
This isn't going to age well. I better
not put that this in actually cuz
this might not age well. I've watched
all the other games
from the comfort of me own home, and now
it's time to come out come out of the
cave like that rubbing eyes. Did someone
say 10:00 kickoff on a Saturday night?
Yeah, sign me up.
Just
you've got to have it, haven't you? Like
just to be there. Just be a flying air.
It's some people's nightmares, and it is
mine, I think, but once you've had a few
wets
and if you win, that atmosphere is
electric. You can leave your car in
York, get the train
to Manchester
and then do this hike, finish in York,
and then you've got your car ready to
go. I wonder if I did get mugged.
Did they let me keep the SIM card?
No, just let me keep me camera,
please, so we can finish this. It'll all
be part of the tale, innit? We'll be
camping out with no no tent cuz
our mates upgraded his Euro hike to a
Land Rover one. You'll need some hiking
poles for it, mate. This is a bit crazy,
innit?
Is it?
Smells of piss, I'll give you that.
I can only assume this is magnet
fisherman, look.
Is it all metal?
And uh this is not
a sponsored video. So, if you come at me
for selling out
one of me long-distance heights, just
know that I'm not.
This is all for the love of the game.
And anyone who's been
following me for a while and
that you know, we were there for the
story of getting on the first can on all
the monk, which was mind-blowing.
Uh you'll know
you'll know the truth and that this is
just a Let's just call it a passion
project.
A passion project and it ends.
And this is how it ends. Six or seven
years
since I did my first can.
Hit a hazelnut porter. Celebrate the
fact that I've only got one note.
And then
there's been another five that we've
done.
And this is the final one. Excuse me,
lads. Don't do anything silly.
Hey, another nest, look.
It's still a rapper.
This youth is a bit weird. Oh, uh
Let's see. See if he's weird.
Yeah.
Morning.
He's got some scissors.
And he's just like going shh.
He's just going at stuff randomly.
Isn't he, all right, mate? I saw him
down it. Look, he's done this. There's
no rhyme or reason to it. He was leaning
in and just cutting bits off.
Look.
Freshly cut. He was leaning in and he
was doing like
like moves like that like wah wah.
Like ninja [ __ ]
Uh with his big
pair of scissors and I thought
I'll press record
because this could get a bit spice world
if he tries to prune my
ears off or something.
Then he's going to have to go in canal
and
I need every any proof that he started
it. Coming out onto outskirts now.
So we're getting it's getting a little
bit more pretty.
Less litter in canal. And it honestly is
lovely walking.
I'm really enjoying it.
A canal bridge. A river runs underneath
it and then they've built
like a water bridge.
Wonderful to see.
I went to shop.
Got some little snacks.
And then came off the
canal path.
And then just through the burbs just for
maybe 2 or 3 mile.
And then
just at the back of the burbs
is this private road no vehicles.
But it is a public right of way.
And we go through a farm or something
and then it's up. We're out of
Manchester. We're up onto the Peak
District. There's Manchester city
center. That's where we've come from.
Just a bit of band. That'll do. It's all
you need sometimes.
Right.
Here we go.
We're off up there.
From the city
to the burbs
to a field. I stopped off at a shop and
got two big bottles. I think they're 2 L
so 4 L water so the bag's got a lot
heavier now, but we're going over at
Tops
and I didn't think there'd be any shops
or
whatever and if I can't filter any water
then I need some on me cuz
we're heading into a heatwave
and I won't I'm not going to get found
out. I've attached a little um
this little
bungee thing
down there so now I can use
me hiking poles with this backpack like
I would on me Osprey um exos
which is an absolute bonus.
Okay.
I'm just going to go up here
through these woods. Oh, yeah.
The Peak District. There's Manchester
just rising out of the ground.
The great northern city of Manchester.
Goodbye for now.
Over the peaks we go.
Fully into a floor floor state. GoPro.
That's proper way to say it anyway.
Floor
pro go. I say it and people are like
"Goo
poo." Why do you say it go?
Go.
Go pro. Stick it, mate. Stick it. Looks
very industrial this bit, innit? Look.
What we got?
Yeah, not bad.
No trespassing. This is private land
public footpath.
Pick a lane. This backpack, I don't know
what I can't remember what liter this
is. 45 maybe?
Or 40?
Uh it's far too big. I've folded the uh
the lid of it over quite a lot there cuz
it's not It had so much room in it. I've
put another 2 L bottle of water in
there, some snacks.
And I've still got plenty of room. I
wanted to test this. I have had it out
in the Lake District for a multi-day
hike that
I didn't film. That was just more of a
busman's holiday.
And I've had it out on some woodland
camps and
I have tested it, but nothing tests your
gear
like a
a good 100-miler.
A multi-day over over 3 days
you really get to know your kit. So, I
just thought I'll take this with me.
Truly get to know it cuz I just love the
look of it. It looks like something that
my granddad used or
old school. It looks old school.
I just love the material and I feel like
if it don't [ __ ] it
in like
4 or 5 years after some heavy wear and
tear, it'll look even better. That's the
question I've been asking myself
recently.
Is the kit really that important? If you
ever climb a mountain or do a multi-day
hike with a huge 80-liter backpack and
you've brought everything but the
kitchen sink, you'll know about it and
you'll promise yourself
that you'll shed weight
for the next time you do it. But then
it gets to a point where
you're like, "What are we doing here?"
People cutting their toothbrushes in
half and stuff and
worrying about every last gram.
>> [laughter]
>> And you could just have a [ __ ] To be
sorry to be vulgar, but
you know, you're carrying everything
inside you, aren't you?
Get your hair cut. If you're that If
you're that
If you're that bothered, shave all your
hair
and lose a bit of timber. I was like, "I
brought the Lanshan 1 cuz I was saving
200 g."
Could lose that off me one of me tits.
Kit does become important if it's good
and you use it a lot and it becomes it
has sentimental value. I've got a few
items like that.
>> [snorts]
>> They are just they have sentimental
value. Filmmaker here. Look at that.
Oh yeah, if you don't mind.
I'll do that.
That'll be boggling
boggling shocker.
Don't want to get a wet foot. Don't want
to get a wet foot.
This is it, ain't it?
This is it.
Spot on. There's me walking pole
holder in full swing.
Out on the trail doing a bit it's
working.
It was one of the reasons why the Osprey
sauce has been good. I mean the back
the back
air flow system
second to none.
But being able to store my hiking poles
like this
is brilliant.
Now I'll just sort of need a
if they could do the air flow system
like on the back of a
Osprey on here, keep it all this color
we'd be laughing.
That's that it, is it? All right,
thanks.
Okay, love. Thank you.
She says I
you have to be brave going down there
because it's all overgrown and nettles
and that. I was like, yeah, it's not my
first rodeo. Sometimes you just got to
just accept the fact that ow ow
you're going to get tapped.
And I am getting tapped.
You're going to get whacked a little
bit.
Like legs are on fire. It's just a
feeling in it? It's just a feeling of
stinging.
It's now It's nothing
nothing game-changing.
Oh, this bit's a bit brutal, isn't it?
Getting stung a bit today. I can handle
legs being on fire with nettles, but
I mean, it does hurt. What gets me,
though,
is bramble. Brambles are
just ruthless.
Ruthless. They just tear your legs up.
Cut Wait a minute.
This is awful.
Is it? Right, I'm putting you away while
I, uh,
tackle
uh, make me way through these nettles.
It's done me.
That bit's done me.
Wow.
Wow, legs are chewed up.
Oh, that is chewed.
>> [snorts]
>> Oh.
The cheweders.
It's still going right.
Ah.
Right, [ __ ]
Just the way I had plotted on my OS map,
but
you can
Yeah, you could do it There's another
way
that just takes a little track that's
not overgrown like this.
I should have maybe done it, but
there was two
ladies
at that farmhouse.
And I was having a crack with them, and
they were like, "Oh, we dare you to go
that way. You dare You've got to be
brave." and all that sort of stuff, and
being like, "Oh,
we'll watch you cuz
we don't get a lot of entertainment out
here." and all that.
So,
I peer pressured.
After [laughter] all that, I was like,
"I've got to go now." And now here I am
in no man's land, just between
this field and then this strip
this strip of nettles, which I've
zigzagged
down from that house. Why I do these
things to you lot after. That's what
happens is I'm ironing it out.
Uh
and on the actual map
that I share,
I'll put the other way.
I see that after
deal with this.
You're welcome. I was going to say if
you do it, let me know and I'll uh
I'll have a pint waiting for you and
loads of people
might just go to
Northern Monk York and say, "I've done
it, mate." Just
Just all Just wearing your shirt and
that. Your Sunday best. "I've done it,
mate. Yeah, I've done it."
What?
"Yeah, I've done it, mate. I'm just
finishing it like 7:00 on a Saturday
night." Get us that pint in. Ah, [ __ ]
Ow.
Oh, it's brutal, mate. If you do it, let
us know.
Reloaded.
Oh my god, my
That is
That's intense, mate. That's all I can
say.
Intense leg therapy. Wow.
That is painful. Wow.
Wow. [snorts]
Spicy.
Spicy legs, mate.
>> [panting]
>> Wow.
Okay, so
I didn't have to do that. Them ladies
were just having a laugh with me,
weren't they?
Because look.
That's where I'd have come out. I'd have
just gone down there and along here on
this perfect path.
>> [laughter]
>> Ah, they've done me there. And a fair
play.
Fair play.
You got me. I don't think any of it
compares
to when I did the
the Giant's Way or whatever it's called
from Pickering
to Whitby
and I got lost.
My god.
The nettles, the thorns, all the thorns.
It was brutal. That was the most brutal,
actually.
Look at this, lad.
Hinch.
Old Vina Hinch.
Oh, well.
Off through this lovely little new gate.
Always tempted by the gate. Sorry about
all the beeping. This is watch telling
me to um
doing a bit. Lovely old cinder track.
So, 15 mi in.
Feeling strong.
It's lovely walking, mate. It's
Look how flat it is. No nettles.
I've got the reservoir to the left of
me.
It's just stunning. Beautiful day for
it, as well.
Wow, a raspberry.
No.
Longdendale Trail.
You are now
at the crossroads of the Pennine Way
and the Longdendale Trail. Opened in
1842, closed 1970.
This was a rail track
between Sheffield and Manchester.
I'm absolutely flying.
I got used to this uh
It's just flat and easy walking. Should
we get a little shot walking past shot
from
I'll put this on bench. Making a film
out of it. Come on. Making a movie.
There you are.
There you go.
Flying. Faster than train.
Who is this?
What size you Talk to me. That's
I don't know what he's done. Press any
button. So, that his head's stove in.
Shame.
>> [snorts]
>> Bottoms Reservoir
That's where we've come from.
>> Environment sound box
>> All right.
>> The Trans Pennine Trail provides
visitors with a magnificent gateway into
the Peak District National Park and the
Longdendale Valley.
Name Longdendale means long wooded
valley
and much of the valley is owned by
United Utilities with the reservoir
>> See you later, mate.
>> [laughter]
>> Oh, it's good, isn't it?
That is good, but
I ain't got time for it. It was very
loud. Shouting in my ear.
The Longdendale Valley
It [snorts] means wooded valley.
He's still going at him.
I think that is mint though, having
something like that out here. Wonderful
orchid.
Mad
up.
It's just spud, that's all. Didn't know
what to say really. Just a spud.
I've done 20 mile
and I'm going to have a rest.
Ah, yes. Take me shoes off actually.
Let me feet breathe. There's a bit
underneath me big toe where it joins
that's uh starting to get a bit hot cuz
it blistered pretty badly when I did the
Centurion and uh
I don't think it's properly healed and
now it's just hurting a little bit so
I'm going to whack a little plaster on
that and just chill out for a bit.
Sugar-free hydration. I can just have it
in here, look.
Look at that.
Scratchings, mate.
Yeah.
These, one of me hydration sachets,
compete on the big tour and then we'll
crack on on the evening shift.
Huh.
And this would have been an old
platform.
Huge tunnels. Stuff goes on in there,
I'm sure it does. Cutting through the
Pennines to link Manchester and
Sheffield by rail. You're standing next
to one what was once a busy railway for
nearly 150 years.
There it is.
Ahead of you in the hillside are the
entrances to the three tunnels
built at different times.
Look at it now, though. What's in there
now?
There's stuff in there, isn't there?
Look, no entry, circuit live. So, it's
like it's
electrified.
Loads of warnings, bad like there's no
way you're getting in there.
See if they're there then.
Aha.
Oh, yes.
Right, it's made out of concrete in a
flower pot.
I like it. Does it work?
It's still
So, this is the bigger flower pot, mate.
Oh.
Five out of 10.
Oh, this is different. This one hasn't
had any work done.
Yes.
Bad luck.
I actually feel sad about this one. RIP.
Okay, this thing.
26 mi in and uh starting to feel it a
little bit now. And what it is, it's the
it's walking on flat stuff.
So, your feet are doing the same
mechanics
all the time. And so, that's just taking
it out of me a little bit.
I could do with some like rougher
terrain. Look, this is fun, isn't it?
Look at this. The book box.
Not good. I'm going to teach mash.
I'm struggling to find anywhere
[clears throat]
remotely acceptable
to pitch. They've just It's just these
banks.
And then before these banks, it's just
walls with barbed wire on top, a little
bit of flat ground, not
not precious at all. It doesn't have to
be fancy. And I'm having it. What is
this?
Toadstools
by Steven Tarr.
Well,
I'm sorry, mate, but
I'm I mean, right over this wall. Look
at that.
That bit there.
The holy grail.
As the sun goes down,
it's perfect for a Lanshan in it as
well.
We're blending just lovely down there.
Okay, any widow makers?
I think we're good. It's 20 to 9:00 and
this is the first place I've seen in
ages that's
remotely good.
The trusty Lanshan 1.
Look how small it goes when it's
compressed. It's tiny. Let's get it set
up.
There we go.
I'm getting eaten alive.
Look at this.
None of the pegs
are going in cuz this it's like leaf
litter and there's something else in the
earth. It's just
not having it.
I've used sticks
where the pegs won't work.
I mean, I've had better pictures, but
that'll do.
It'll keep the bugs off me.
Look at that. That's
That's well stealth, isn't it? Love it.
Right, I'm in. I'm leaving the door open
to help with condensation. Hopefully no
one
comes and has a look in cuz webs. 10:00
past 9:00, I can't be asked to
to cook a meal.
I'm just going to have
a couple of slack handfuls of trail mix
and a nice bit of water
and that'll do me then.
Straight to bed, up early, and crack on.
>> [music]
[music]
>> Welcome to day two
of the Northern Monk Pilgrimage. I was
out like a light, mate. I was out like
someone had just shot me. There was a
tawny owl.
Must have just like It sounds like it
was sat on top of me tent. Must have
just been up in here
making a right racket, but luckily
I've got me earplugs. So, boink, boink,
gone. And it is now 10:00 past 6:00.
I'm pretty much squared away. Just need
to put the tent away, which uh
it's not the best pitch. It's baggy.
I didn't want to tighten the guidelines
cuz the ground with the leaf litter is
so soft.
Pegs and sticks were just coming out, so
I knew it won't going to be windy. And
thankfully, it kept the bugs off me.
I left the door open all night, so there
was no condensation whatsoever.
It's not a bad little spot, is it?
Considering I walked miles
not being able to find anywhere
suitable.
And I've got this.
Beautiful little gaff.
Right, I'll get this bit squared away.
And the trail is just there. Just a
little bit of flattened leaf litter that
is no longer flattened.
So, there's absolutely
zero
trace that I've been there. The midges
are peppering me to bits.
Let's get out of this woodland now. Look
at this path, look.
Ow.
Getting eaten alive. That was wonderful.
What time are we on?
20:00 past 6:00. Ah, these midges, mate.
Let's outwalk them.
It's 20:00 past 6:00, so we've got a
3-hour headstart on yesterday. We
managed to do a marathon. Yesterday was
a marathon.
>> [snorts]
>> 26.something miles. I'm hoping to get
30-plus miles done today. Today is the
uh
the start [snorts] of another heat wave
in the UK. Magic Wood Cafe. Aw.
That looks nice, don't it? From 10:00
till 2:00. Not meant to be today. What's
today?
Oh, let's have a look in here then. It's
for children, but I'll get in there.
Oh, mud midges are a bit fierce, but
I'm not one to turn down a magic wood.
And that is magic, look. Midges are
killing me off.
What is it? It is
a pissed off
a little robin.
That. And then there's a cat suede.
There's a dream catcher up there. Oh, is
that another way?
Wait a minute. It's a maze.
It's amazing.
A load of little trinkets and
wonderments. I don't really got time for
it. Oh, it's a bit thin here.
Can I get through it? Back on. All
right.
Yeah, through.
>> [snorts]
>> Right, I mustn't double back on myself
cuz
I don't really got time to be doubling
back on myself. It's just so magic.
Look at this. Yes.
This is what we're after, look.
A little archway.
Marmite on there.
And look at that.
Big rig, look.
Huh.
Little house with fairies and gnomes and
that. Someone riding a snail.
This is good, innit?
Who needs GTA 6
when you've got the magic wood? Right, I
am Oh, one more little look at whatever
that is.
Just have a quick look at whatever this
is.
That's definitely a hedgehog.
Now, more. It's made out of a book.
Made out of an old book, look. That's
clever, innit?
Oop.
Should I keep going? I'm going to keep
going. This is brilliant. It's
brilliant.
Two ways to go.
I'm going to go this way. I'm being
eaten to bits here. I've got to get out.
I've got to get out of the magic wood.
There's a fairy door, look.
I've seen a fairy door.
I love a fairy door. Come on.
Yeah, who needs Grand Theft Auto 6 when
you've got a fairy door, look.
Is this way? is all over the place. I
can get out there if I wanted to. I
should do, really.
I should get out there, but
I seem to be
still going. That's Calabean dressed up
as a bee. Look at that for a
filmmaker of the year award. Come on.
Side quest GTA.
I'm out. I'm coming out the other end,
look.
Coming out the other end, a changed man,
a new man.
What's up here? I bet there's something
in here, look. Yes.
Knew it, though.
Look at that, jugs.
That was mint, that. The sun is already
warm. Manchester, that's where I
started.
That's where I am.
And I'm going to Leeds.
And then I'm coming around to York to
finish.
Big rabbit.
Big carrot.
A half-buried bike with wellies.
Good stuff.
And this is where we leave the Trans
Pennine Trail. It's been an honor.
It's now bridleways,
footpaths,
and what have you,
that I've linked together myself, so
it's taking me a while.
I'm on OS maps, so I don't know what
these paths are going to be like,
how used they're going to be. And then
finding that, look, tick paradise.
Brambles, nettles, one of them. How long
further? No, I can't even get through
there, mate.
Look at that. It's thick.
It's just thick with it.
I'm just walking alongside a field where
it's not overgrown, and that's fine.
It's just if I can get back in
further down here. No, it's still
unbelievably overgrown there. Can I join
it again here? Going in. I nearly tapped
out. We're going to keep going.
Head went a little bit.
That's funny, isn't it?
Lovely stuff.
The pilgrimage.
>> [laughter]
>> Well, you know, the thing is with a
pilgrimage, you sort of doing a
pilgrimage out, you're looking for
stuff. Um
answers maybe or
just a nod to something
bigger than yourself.
And uh answers I would have found is
that I'm sick of getting stung in legs.
And it would have been a nod to public
transport.
I mean, this looks too manicured. This
is obviously someone's garden. It's well
looked after. They must have gardeners.
Look how I'm
All this grass getting cut. Lovely to
walk on there.
The footpaths and the scenery
are brilliant now.
And it's winding, and so
I'm not getting It's not repetitive at
all. There's a load of stuff to keep me
occupied and interested. And that's it.
I can feel myself
coming into Yorkshire. It's just in the
walls, in the way that the farms are set
up, the sheep.
It's uh
It's all very Yorkshire, right? Is it
way here? I'm going to start to mate.
I've linked up with this Do you see the
the green with the
the green diamonds on it?
That's a
proper
path. I mean, it's like
it's not going to be all nettly and
horrible.
>> [snorts]
>> Keep going. Keep going. And that is
where I want to get to
before I stop. I'll have a break there.
Cannon Hall
Country Park.
It's going to [snorts] be spenny, isn't
it? But apparently there's a
um
a garden center there with a little cafe
on it. So, we might get a cup of coffee,
hopefully. Also, the heatwave
is upon us. It's nearly 9:00.
And it's hot.
Very hot. It's a little bit of a gate
used on wall, look. So, that's used to
go.
It's a hinge. Oh, dear.
Wow.
It's great British countryside.
Betwixt the woodland and the corn field
is my new
country album
coming soon.
Stunning.
Stunning turn.
Yeah, this whole section has just been a
dream.
Look at this.
Look at that massive beech tree with all
its roots exposed.
That's fun, isn't it?
There's the garden center over yonder.
Yeah, any good, respectable garden
center
is going to be doing some sort of brew.
Brew cake or brew
sausage roll. And off sometimes
you can find yourself on the receiving
end of a full English.
Fingers crossed.
Quite possibly
the best breakfast ever.
I've just had there. Not having no tea
last night, not eating much on this hike
has just been
we've rectified it. All calories
restored.
That was a beastly breakfast. And here
we go, look, just going through a
country park
with a load of geese. Fill my water,
fill one of me water bottles cuz the
last behind counter was like the sink
wasn't the right depth, so she was
having to pour it into a glass then into
the bottle. It took her ages to get one
done. I just didn't have the heart to
say, "Can you do this one as well?"
So, I got one bottle full. It's an
absolute heatwave. It's over 30° today.
Oh, some dappled shade
at last. Blisteringly hot.
Don't know if I've mentioned that. Oh,
my skin's tingling. This morning has
been great hiking. Here it don't always
have to be
remote wilderness and mountains. It can
be just
the countryside.
The British countryside. And speaking of
which, there's a cricket pitch. Look at
that. You don't get more
British countryside than that, does it?
Oh, cool.
[ __ ] load of cows. I don't want to go
straight through. Oh, she's just staring
at me. Come on then. I'm going through.
These don't give a [ __ ] I don't know if
I can do this. Uh excuse me. I've got to
go straight through the middle of
everyone there, look. Do you mind if I
come through? They're blocking me, look.
I'll give them a wide berth.
I'll go around, look. That's how you do
it. You go around. Always go around,
man.
Unless one of them
or all of them go rogue. I think we've
we've made that. It's too hot to be
beefing, isn't it? Through this
woodland. And then we're going to go
through this woods. Which I can't wait
for,
cuz
so exposed out here
to that thing. Where is it?
Ah, I got to look at it. Get me in this
wood
quick.
It is energy-sapping,
the heat.
There's like warnings and people are
getting sent home from work and stuff.
The next bit of water that's deep enough
and I can get in, I'm getting in it.
I'm a dead
In the distance there
is Bretton Hall
and Sculpture Park. All right, lads. Lay
out, ladies.
I'll keep going. You just follow me.
I want to get under this tree
with all others.
Getting out of this sun. I don't blame
you.
They're getting on me.
They're getting under this tree in
shade. Animals are hiding. Just tend to
walk in the midday sun. It's a shame,
really.
I had no idea
it was going to do this.
Uh
and it is a bit of a shame cuz it's just
a bit uncomfortable. It makes it harder
to hike and also
What is going on there? Can you tell me
if they're
If they make a charge for me,
give us a heads-up.
So I can give it one of them. Wait.
These.
Yeah, it just it takes the fun out of
it, mate, cuz it's just blisteringly
hot.
Uh
and I'm sure it's dangerous. My skin is
tingling. I'm going to see if this water
is swimmable-in-able.
And we'll keep going for a little bit
and then I have to judge it cuz it's
forecast to get even worse tomorrow.
There's a chance I might uh
jump off trail for safety reasons. Look
at them sprinting for shade. Look at
this thing.
Put this one down here.
And then this up here.
I assume for if it uh
it's if you're riding horses.
That's good. Upper Lake Greek Temple,
Obelisk and Shell Grotto.
That is not somewhere
that's going to let me get me budgie
smugglers on
and go for a dunk.
That's devastating, look.
No, I'm over this bridge here.
That's where I'm going. Yeah, little
sculpture.
Huge blood on phone, look.
Like a Monet painting.
My throat's sticking together. It's too
hot to do it, mate. Banter has just
completely fallen off the ledge.
Chats have gone.
I've done maybe about 15 mi already
today. It's only 10:10 past 1:00. I can
just feel my skin is vibrating
with this sun, and I'm
I might have to call it in Wakefield,
you know.
Might have to call it in Wakefield or do
something.
Get indoors. This second day has been
brilliant.
It's just since midday.
That sun is just crushing. I can't enjoy
it for what it is. I guess
I'm just too uh
too hot.
Flying, mate. I'm absolutely flying.
That's Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
A wonderful day out if you've not done
it.
Fun for all the family. Could do myself
some long-term damage to me skin and to
me
just to me brain.
It's cooking.
So
We'll get to Northern Monk Leeds.
Uh maybe another pint.
And have a think.
It's too hot, mate.
Well, I have to say
I failed. I think I failed.
I failed you all. There is, look here.
Northern Monk Leeds. The flat stone.
Look at that thing.
They're going to brew beer in there,
look.
I'm going to walk in and get a pint
and have a chat.
The seat's boiling hot.
Right.
Here I am. Here I am. Keeping the faith,
mate. Oh my god, I can't wait to relax.
My head hurts. My skin's tingling. I
just can't do it. Can't do it.
It's too hot. So, this is it. This is
Leeds.
From Manchester to Leeds, 62 mi. But,
I'm not hiking there. I'm not doing the
extra 40 mi.
It's going to get to 32-33°
the next couple of days. I'm not doing
40 mi exposed in that all day long.
>> [snorts]
>> It's just It's just daft. So
This is Leeds.
Northern Monk in Leeds.
Just lovely lad behind the bar there.
I've got that on the house. Thanks,
Russ. Cheers. Cheers to everyone at
Northern Monk.
Absent friends.
Wow.
It's as good as it always has been.
>> [snorts]
>> Refreshing and delicious. I brought
another Monk T-shirt as well just for
the ending.
Sorry. I love
ah
Feel like I've let myself down.
I know that people I've spoke to
obviously before I called it
a fun fan
uh told Ross uh this isn't a sponsored
gig by the way for anyone who thinks
that this is. It isn't. This is what you
call a passion project and it always has
been with Northern Monk. So
yeah, I am not getting paid anything for
this. It's just something that I wanted
to do
to sort of celebrate the end of my
collaboration on the patrons cans.
Uh
and I have in a way I failed mate. You
see it's
I can't carry on. The only one who's
hard on me is me.
>> [snorts]
>> Cuz I set these targets and I'm just
like I feel like I can go through the
fire a lot of the times. Well, I can't.
Can't even get to 32° so the fire's
going to
have its way with me, ain't it? But I do
set these goals and then I'm very
driven. I can be
very driven. When I put my mind to it I
can conquer stuff.
And I can go through hardships and
go through the tough times but
No.
Thank you. See you.
>> [sighs]
>> Um
Lovely lady that works here. Thanks for
my pint.
I hold myself accountable
to finish the things that I start and
it is rare that I fail but I'm not going
to say fail. It's the rare rare that I
don't
complete math goals.
But, this is one of them times, mate.
And so, I've just going to have to
change the goal posts of the goal. The
goal posts. I still will leave the hike,
the Northern Monk Pilgrimage, below. You
can check it out if you want for you
hiking nerds or you beer nerds.
You could do it over some time and come
to these Northern Monk pubs when they're
open
>> [snorts]
>> and have a beverage. You could do it
however you want. I would recommend if
you're going to do it is get is use a
bike to get from Manchester to the all
the Trans Pennine Trail. Brilliant for
biking. You could bike that and then
ditch your bike or do it in stages. Bike
section, hike section, rail. However you
want to do it. It's just a nice
It's a nice Northern Monk pub crawl.
And that's it.
So,
thanks. Thanks for joining me.
Thanks for joining me. Thanks to
Northern Monk
for
for letting me collab on these cans.
It's been amazing. It's
It was a dream come true
and [snorts] it's now been a dream
lived. And thank you lot. Thank you lot.
Without you lot pestering Northern Monk
back in the day, I wouldn't have got on
these cans to begin with and it's been a
real
It's been a real honor.
And I've got I've saved each can from
the series.
And they'll be something to look back on
from nursing home. And there's one more
[music] can, the final one is out now.
I've not tasted it yet, but it is out
now and the the Patrons Project [music]
is
after all these years complete.
So, cheers
to you lot. Thank you very you lot.
Thank you very much.
Take care of yourselves. I'll see you
soon.
