Hiking 100 Miles Across the Yorkshire Dales | Taking on the Centurion
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video documents a grueling yet transformative 100-mile hiking challenge across the Yorkshire Dales, undertaken during an intense heatwave with temperatures reaching record-breaking highs of 34 degrees Celsius. The hiker begins his journey on a scorching Bank Holiday Monday, immediately facing extreme physical strain as the relentless sun saps his energy and boils his brain. Dehydration becomes a critical issue early on, forcing him to ration his limited water supplies and rely on electrolytes to maintain his strength. The terrain is often remote and poorly defined, featuring boggy patches that cause painful blisters and wet feet, requiring frequent stops to dry gear and swap socks. Despite the harsh conditions and the lack of clear paths in some areas, he finds moments of solitude and beauty amidst the wildflowers and birdlife, though the primary focus remains on survival against the elements.
As the hike progresses, the narrator reflects deeply on the changing culture of British pubs and the importance of supporting local communities, especially during such a challenging event. He stops at various establishments like The Wheat Chief and the Tan Hill Inn, noting how these "beacons of hope" provide essential respite from the sun, food, and social connection. A significant portion of his experience involves navigating confusing maps where unofficial paths or mine shafts lead him astray, forcing him to rely on digital tools and local advice to correct his course. He encounters other hikers on the Coast to Coast trail, observing how recent improvements have paved over previously boggy sections, making the route safer but also highlighting the contrast between the rugged past and the maintained present of this national park.
The journey reaches a climactic moment when the exhausted hiker finally finds a secluded river plunge pool to cool down, an experience he describes as one of the best swims of his life and a necessary reset for his body temperature. After surviving several days of wild camping and enduring blister pain, he decides to pitch his tent near Kirby Steven to access supplies before continuing toward Kirkby Stephen. The video concludes with him reflecting on the mental and physical toll of the trip, acknowledging that while the heat was unbearable and the navigation tricky, the experience has been a profound reset that allows him to appreciate simple things in life. He emphasizes that despite the difficulties, including getting lost and dealing with mine shafts, the hike showcases the remote beauty of England and serves as an inspiring testament to human endurance and the joy found in nature's quiet moments.

It's going to be another scorching day
apparently.
Still each breath [music]
cut through [music] my skin.
>> Leave no trace. And we're off. [music]
I've checked and there are weather
warnings for this heat wave to persist
and get up to record breaking highs of
34
bank holiday.
>> A load of lap wings. So, they're
probably nesting around here and they're
just circling me,
screeching,
trying to get me to do one. Lovely bird
and I will do one. That's where we woke
up. Top of Great Wide along here and
we've come down through this valley
and we're here and we're off
to the top of there. You got to sort of
weave around the boggy bits. Nothing too
mental, but I got wet feet, but it's
quite refreshing. Not been talking much
because
I can't. It's I'm too hot. It just sort
of saps you. Boils your brain. I haven't
found any water. I've got a few glugs
left
that I'm rationing. That's priority
number one now is just get it down,
march on, and get some wonderful H2O.
Thanksgiving to God,
the Parker family and local people. And
in memory of five Polish RAF airmen who
died here on 13th of the 11th, 1942,
buried in Newark,
the survivor. Well, that's a mad one, is
it? Look at that.
There we are. Upper Warfdale.
after we're getting in the shade for a
minute.
Oh, that's nice.
Taking it out of my brain.
According to me map, it looks like I've
got a bit of a trek
before I come to anything that even
looks like water. So,
I'm just going to pace myself. Just I've
got a couple of mouthfuls. I'll just sip
on that and not exert myself too much. I
love it when people have put these huge
York stone flags down so you can just
really
crunch out the miles.
Summit at Buckston Pike
on a bank holiday Monday
quart to 11.
Lot of soul. Only one here. Everyone's
in Lake District, mate.
Don't tell anyone about this. Don't tell
anyone about the Yorkshire Dales. This
bit's nice, mate. Not much of a path at
all. It just feels remote.
There's just no one about. Lovely little
bit of solitude. M. Have I even got it
right way? Is there a path? There
doesn't look like one over all that.
Look.
Tough little section with just the way
the ground is. Some bits are boggy. Some
bits are like little holes everywhere.
Medic.
>> I was born in the river one day. [music]
Wash me clean and cold.
Oh Lord, I won't come [music] home till
the river runs dry my hand.
I was born in the mountain air. It shook
me to its peak. [music]
Oh Lord, I won't come home till the
mountains had it say.
Oh [music and singing] Lord, I won't
come home. I won't come home to play.
Oh Lord, I won't come home till the
river [music] runs dry. My friend,
>> I just had shooting
just had shooting pains through me
because of all the the bog and how wet
it was. The blister patches had come off
and just caused havoc.
So, I've just been sat here 15, 20
minutes drying my feet out, drying my
shoes out, and I've swapped me socks for
dry socks. These are toe socks. It was
hurting too much, man. I couldn't walk
on it. So, hopefully this will give it a
bit of rest bite. I need some more
comped. I've run out run out run out of
comped. So, I need to get some more.
But you know I am aware that
I need water more than anything really.
So
it's so [snorts] hot mate. Oh I keep
saying it but
it really is a heat wave.
Chilly heat wave. Look.
First bit of shade.
medic. [sighs]
That's nice.
[laughter]
Nice and cooling. It's not quite a drink
yet, though. My throat is seizing up.
It's getting harder to swallow. Any
puddle, any bit of water is getting it
from now. It's just anything, anything
to wet my whistle.
>> Civilization. There's no shops or pubs
or anything in this bit. I don't know if
this is a private bench or not. Parish
council, so that's all right.
I don't know when I'm going to pass some
more water. So, I'm going to make the
most of this. I've just got these two of
these
um 850 mil bottles. I'm going to fill
one now. Put some electrolytes in it and
just neck it and then neck a full one of
just pure water and then fill two up.
Unbelievable. So happy that one's got
electrolytes in. This is getting two
sachets of instant coffee. We're
experimenting out here. Some sweetener
and some sugar.
Let it all melt in a little bit. and
you've got yourself
uh a cappuccino. Call that a poor man's
cappuccino. So, it was just like one of
them ones you get at shop.
Worse, I guess. This is going to be
unreal.
Absent friends.
Oh my god.
Oh, feel it going down.
Ah, actually hurts a bit.
Ah,
wow. Oh, feel it in. I can feel it
working through me.
Not been that thirsty for quite a while.
I think I might be sick.
Done too much. I shouldn't have necked
it all.
Oh,
it's okay. Oh, wow.
We're back. Says West Burton, one mile
this way, which looks like nice walking.
My mindset's completely changed. I was
uh consumed with thirst, which is a
crazy
crazy experience. People who are doing
it, who are going to do this hike, take
every opportunity to fill your bottles
with your filters. I would even bring
bigger bottles and then you'd be all
right.
That's coffee kicking in that. Oh,
coffee making me think I can do walk
backs.
The faith that this bloke's got in this
twig is I just wish someone had that
much faith in me. Beautiful
and quaint.
Just leading me towards this village.
Always shadow there cuz that seems to be
just always up my back. And then just
looking out for the tiny little gates
in the wall which I do appreciate
appreciate.
That shade is good.
It's probably the smallest one yet. Look
at that. Got to go through it, aren't
you?
I just got through that little gate. I
just stood it road and I just went
like that cuz I was just exhausted.
And uh this woman was like, "Oh, we all
feel like that sometimes." Bloody old
deer sunbathing in her garden. I
apologized profusely for my profanities
and we had a good little chat and she
said, "You're only 200 yards from Alo.
So that's nice."
Don't know if any of you know what this
will be, but it is I believe a kits
pitch where you throw
metal hoops or
horseshoes
from one to other kits.
That pub was too good. Loads of lovely
people there. Beer looked lovely. It
looked too good. I thought if I have one
in here, that would be me. 4:00. It's
still just as hot as the midday sun.
Hotest do you don't know if I've
mentioned it. And we're going to just
keep going. Tonight would have been
maybe the night to get a B&B or in a pub
or something like that with air con and
a cold shower. To be honest, I don't
fancy setting up the wigwam and getting
in it in this heat. Atrocious behavior.
Still doing it, aren't I?
I'm cooked.
I'm cooked. I've been out in it all day.
I need some rest bite from it. I am
cooked.
Always shoot your gate.
I've got to do it. There's no way
that I can spend the rest of the day out
in this. I've already spent too long. A
helicopter going up. I'll bring you some
some shots at food. See what the room's
like. We'll do a review of it. See what
this booze is like. cuz you might want
to stop here on if you're doing it as
well. You've got lots of options, but
this might be one of them that you
choose. Someone's private helicopter.
Look,
who do you think it is? Vinnie Jones.
Oh, it's nice and cool. Oh, it's got
everything I need, mate. Look at that.
Oh yes, smush. We're living like kings.
What's view like that'll do me like?
That'll do me.
Cold water,
huge telly, somewhere to hang me duds
and a shower.
Oh yeah. And uh there was just like four
or five old farmer guys in corner
talking about eggs.
Just like when did you last a boiled
egg? And he's like, "Well, it's been a
while. I've been having musli every
morning." I thought that is for me top
quality chats. I felt like wing in.
You're talking just a stranger at the
bar
sipping whiskey.
Are you talking eggs, boys?
And then just get into it. Y'all ever
had an eggs benedict? Get him big to I'm
going to get a cold shower and let's go
and have a wet
Welcome to everybody's favorite time,
map time. Great Wside. We made it to
Great Wside after an exhilarating day on
the trail. A tough first day on the
trail. Um, woke up here and straight
away I knew it was going to be a hot
day. It was baking. So we come along
here, we drop down uh this is where all
the curus were and the birds. Lovely for
uh bird spotting actually
over this road. Now
I don't know if you can see under me pen
there, but it's uh it's tracks like
this, not green tracks like this. And I
found that with tracks like this and
these little tracks, you roll the dice a
little bit. Sometimes they're good,
sometimes they're not so good.
And this was
quite remote and quite boggy in parts up
to top out on Bookton Pike. And I'm glad
I did. It was very remote and I imagine
in winter it would be a tough gig, but
um I did enjoy it in the end, but it is
very remote and you need to keep looking
at your map because the paths aren't
that very well defined. So off we go
down here. Grouse Butts. There is a lot
of grouse but a lot of grouse shooting
down here
over Nbury Hill. We start to descend.
This is where I was getting super
thirsty. Hit this little bit of road
work here. Thankfully, see this spring
that's fed from Milbeck Springs. Comes
down here and that was my life source.
That was where that was where I got my
water and I was so grateful for it. And
that gave me a spring in my step. Now we
get to here. You can choose whichever
way you want to go. I went this bottom
way. It was really nice. And then up
through the fields
into West Burton. And there's a shop, a
pub. You can get your head down here. I
didn't didn't even have a pint. Just
cracked on through these farm fields.
Saw a oyster catcher around here
somewhere. It was quite nice. Lots of
alouses around there near Agaff and
Agaff Falls. It was very busy at the
falls. A lot of piss wizards uh with
ghetto blasters and all that cuz it was
the bank holiday and it was a heat wave.
So um I gave that a wide birth. On we
go. Says van there cuz that's where I've
parked me van for another hike. But so
we ignore that.
And here we are. What a wonderful a
house.
That was the right move, mate. Washed
and dried me socks and duds, filled me
water bottles up, charged my power bank,
had a wonderful feed and a good night's
sleep, and got out of that sun. Had a
cold shower as soon as I got in there,
as cold as it could go. Just drop my
temperature. And what a place the wheat
chief and the women who run it were just
so warm and friendly. Just decent
people. Yeah, I recommend it very much.
If you're doing this hike, that's
definitely worth a stop in there. It's
all homecooked food. It's not like ponyy
and, you know, using jew and all that
sort of malak. It's just honest good
home-cooked food. Good beer selection.
Perfect. See the castle in the distance?
I've just nearly talked myself into an
early goof. This is my break. This is
what I love to do. So, although I do
love to push it and get as much done as
I can and uh put myself out of my
comfort zone a bit, I feel like this is
not the time to do it. This is the time
to amble and meander
through the delightful Yorkshire Dales.
There you go. That's good presenting
that, ain't it? Cut. Cut to now back to
you in the studio. All these lads
early morning and they're already hiding
in the shade.
Mind you, I've got woolly jumpers on, so
that must be hard work. Someone's left
it open, which is a bit of a shame.
It's nice, isn't it? No latch, but
does the business. Looks well.
It's just amazing for birds this hike.
Amazing.
That is dedication, isn't it? Look at
this place, mate. It's an absolute
hole. There's an oyster catcher,
lapwing, and a curu. All just in the
same area. I've joined the Harriet way.
I believe it's the Harriet way. It's a
hike that I've done in the past. You
come the other way. So, I'm sort of I've
joined it and I'm going in reverse.
Castle Bolton.
Let's have a look. Bolton Castle was
built by Sir Richard Lcrope who was Lord
Chancellor to the England captain David
Beckham back in [laughter]
and is still owned by a direct
descendant of David [music] Beckham.
Bolton Beckham the lesserk known son of
David Beckham. Bolton Beckham.
Construction of the castle. Oh,
construction of the castle began in 1378
and it took around 18 years to build it.
It was designed as a fortified residence
rather than simply being a military
base. The castle's most famous resident
besides David Beckham who would
frequently visit was Mary Queen of Scots
who was held in custody there in 1568. I
think you'll agree it's a wonderful
looking castle.
Stunning area that lovely and so quaint.
But now we are heading up away from
civilization
and over the mu. It's day three and we
haven't had a swim yet. So [snorts]
we need to rectify that.
We're up on top the Mland.
Looks like a decent track. Not much
going on up here. Grouse hunting. This
is grouse hunting territory where people
pay big money
to come and uh hang out in these hides
and blast game birds. It's nice
showcasing
the county that I was born and raised
in.
Nice soft roof holding all stone
together. Nice to lay on. Keeps it
camouflaged from above. And they're
dotted all the way along here and all
the way through this valley.
Filmmaker at day award. These are the
sort of holidays that make you grow and
make you appreciate
all the simple things in life. It's a
really good reset. Sitting bite pool
getting off your face on gin and tonics
is a wonderful time. I've just talked
myself into it. Right, we're off. Uh
it's a wonderful time. But what am I
saying? I would love
love right now to be around pool
with a frosty beverage. [laughter]
Oh, just going to go on one about how
this is better than sitting around pool
with a frosty beverage.
Yeah, it is to me. This is my This is my
pool and frosty beverage.
I tell you what, I've made good time
coming over the tops. Them five miles
have just flown by.
Coast to coast path signs.
All brand new AW there for Alfred Way.
Right,
making good time. So, I've decided not
to go to Wreath and just keep going.
It's 3 miles
to this next place that has a pub and I
could maybe film a water there or just
filter it on the way. It's off the
beaten track, so it's it's not part of
the coast to coast. We're back. We're on
the Centurion again. There is a a slight
path, but it's nothing like we've just
had where the Harriet Way and the Coast
to Coast all converge.
We're back out onto uh paths less trod.
And this does follow a river. And I'm
hoping beyond hope that I get my my
spot. In my mind, it's just a plunge
pool deep enough for me to lie down in
to submerge my full body just away from
everyone. bit of peace and quiet where I
can just cool my body temperature and
just splash about a bit. This is a
lovely section. All the wild flowers in
the grass
mic.
So I go down here and then we cross over
a river and that is I think the last
river that I see today. So, I'm just
hoping that it's got summit for me.
That's deep enough. And I'm going in. In
my mind, it's just a plunge pool. Deep
enough for me to lie down in to submerge
my full body. Just away from everyone.
Bit of peace and quiet where I can just
cool my body temperature and just splash
about a bit. What a beautiful old bridge
as well. The Yorkshire Dales, mate.
going about.
Oh mate, this is
as good as it gets. As good as it gets.
King Fisher.
[laughter]
See,
best bit ever. Best life bit.
Frolicking. Is this frolicking? I think
it is, isn't it? Don't be ashamed to
frolic mate. Right, I'll turn you off,
but I'm coming back in here. I'm staying
in here for a bit.
10 out of 10. What an unbelievable dip.
That was the perfect spot. My last
comped come off though. I am bare now.
No comped at all. Yeah, the only place
that will sell compedes is Kirk B
Steven, which is another
20 miles from here. It's uh it's it's
I'd have to I'm mumbling and stuttering
my words. I can't speak properly.
That swim's just like blown me away. I
stayed in for ages just swimming about
till I got really cold and then got out
and just the sun warming me through.
That's what I want to talk about. That's
what I find it easy to talk about. But
I'm trying when I'm like trying to give
you a trip report and tell you about
where I'm going and I I lose interest.
I just keep cuz I keep reminding myself
that all right, you're making a this is
a hiking video showcasing this hike.
People who will watch this might want to
do this hike and people might watch it
in years to come thinking, "Oh, I want
to do like a challenging hike in the
Yorkshire Dales and this is the one that
they'll choose." And I'm just waffling
on about being in water and being all
peaceful and then getting out and the
sun being on me and seeing King Fisher.
Yeah, [laughter]
that's what I want to talk about.
[sighs]
Cuz when you're like, I got three miles
to get to Diggly Bits and then it's
another three miles to Fiddledon.
Yeah. Keep it, keep it, keep it, ref
little babbling, bro. Look at this.
Look,
they are there's no little gates.
There's been about three of these where
he's just collapsed the wall.
It's a wash with insects and birds and
rabbits and wombles and
crabs. Look at this section here, man.
Just a lovely little path in the shade
following the river.
This is what it's all about, mate. This
is lovely stuff.
We're just coming into Lenweight now.
Pretty as a picture.
Beautiful looking pub. Black Sheep
Brewery, but it's closed. Look,
it's closed.
It's pretty much the midday sun all day.
And it's been a good day, but the heat
has started to get me. started to give
me that fizzy headache. What's this
medic
and the [snorts] old tingly skin?
Charles Bathurst in
this one might be closed as well.
Yeah. Look at this big tournament style
kit pitch. Look what I've gone and got.
Look
sheep. Not really. Look,
just such a good boozer.
What we done today, mate? Come on. Just
went in to get a pint of Coke and some
crisps, whatever. But couldn't resist,
mate. Just having a bit of a chat to
last behind bar saying uh I says, "I
can't believe you're open till they're
open every day 11 till 11." I was like,
"That's who's who's putting them shifts
in?" She was like, "You'll be
surprised."
ged me up. It ged me up and I was like,
"Well, I'll have a pint then." If people
are drinking from 11 till 11,
I'll have one at 400 p.m. Anyway, absent
friends.
That's the one. Wow.
Oh, that's good.
Bert knows his
I don't know what the rooms are like.
Don't know what the food's like. The
vibe
is good. Anywhere with that many kits,
is good. Staying here cuz it's
heatwave, isn't it?
It's a heat wave. So,
safety. I'll go and get in shade
and um just have a look at the map.
to make a plan. But if this cuts,
this just cuts to like my dinner tonight
in here or my room or map time or
something.
Cool. There we are. See that kid there?
That kid
Is this guy
beautiful stuff? It's massive. Look at
this
pool table. I'll be taking out a few at
locals cuz that's one of my one of my
secret things is pool
darts.
Dice
cos
>> right day three up a wonderful breakfast
and we're off. The wind beneath my
wings.
Lovely walking here. I just I kept I did
a few walkbacks cuz I just couldn't
believe how quaint it was. The birds
singing, the weather was lovely. Um the
heat of the sun hadn't properly kicked
in. Absolutely wonderful behavior
[snorts] through West Bolton
and to Bolton. To Castle Bolton, the
wonderful Castle Bolton. We come up and
we're going up over the tops now. Lovely
walking this. It was just a fivemile
stretch over the tops. It was very
decent under foot. So, this bit just
flew by. A lot of grass shooting along
here as well. So, we join up with the
road here. It's a very quiet road. No
cars went past me. And down we go over
the cattle grid into Grinton. There's a
pub there you could stop at.
Don't know how good it is, but there is
an air house there. And then you've got
Wreath here. There's a few different
hikes that come through here. And you've
got the option of a few different pubs
and shops.
I gave that a swerve. And off we go on
the Centurion.
I love this bit. This bit was wonderful.
Just following this river,
very hot I was.
And uh then just finding this bit of a
swim here was it was heavenly. It was it
was got to be top three swims of my
life, I think, was unbelievable.
And uh along we go past this farm. Now,
you could go across here and follow this
path on this side. It looked quite nice.
and maybe more access to the river on
this side. But this is the side I stuck
to and it was very nice indeed.
Over the river
inter lengthway a house there that was
closed and then we hit the road and up
we go to this a house. What a haven. And
there
is where I got my head down for night
three.
It's half 8 and we're off
the start of day three. That's it for
pubs and accommodation. We're wild
camping for the rest of it now because
the temperatures have dropped a little
bit and there's a few clouds in the sky.
We leave this road. Caution mine shafts.
Try not to get lost, which has been a
worry. I've just been sat this morning
looking at my map linking all these
little trails together which are
sometimes on the map but then in reality
they're not there
as I found out on day two. Was it day
two?
On day two. How many days am I in here?
One,
two. This is day four. Is it one,
two, three? Yeah, day four. Oh, mate.
Well, I said day three. Welcome to day
four. So, we're going over tops [snorts]
and looking at the map, it's like just a
collection of different
styles of track that have linked
together. And obviously with it not
being a recognized route, there's no
definitive path with signposts and
stuff. Not yet. Anyway, I'm hoping we
can get this one recognized. I think the
Yorkshire Dales
would benefit from it and I think people
would enjoy it cuz so far it's been
excellent. Yesterday was stunning. Such
a lovely hike. But I'm mining out the
kinks, aren't I? If there I could end up
down a mine shaft here. We don't know.
I've downloaded the OS map onto my watch
as well. If I do a a wrong turn, it'll
beep at me. Hey, Hazy, you're going the
wrong way. You've already been to the
ale house today.
All right, watch.
Watch this.
Some sort of furnaces. Maybe they look
like they were maybe furnaces. And this
is maybe a little mine mine area.
Could be wrong. Probably am wrong.
Okay, this thing cordoned off. I'm
guessing this is one of our mines.
You don't want to be standing in there.
There's no defined path.
Have I maybe gone wrong? I mean, it says
it with an arrow pointing this way.
Unless I've maybe gone wrong way back
there. We're back on track. What's this?
That goes down quite deep. That's a mine
shaft. Give that a wide birth. There are
parts of this hike that are like so
remote. Some of the most remote places
in England, I reckon. But I'm just
following these stakes with the blue
tops on them. They seem to be sending me
in the right direction so far. They also
seem to have disappeared. I'll tell you,
mate, you won't want to be up here when
weather turns. What says ye? How deep is
it? Is it a mine shaft?
Am I going to
How deep is it? Minecraft.
Whoa.
I'm scared of it. I think
I got my head down and I marched along
[music] this wonderful ridge, Gary
Goodidge. And this ridge was popularized
in the [music] late 2000s
by
a celebrity, a Nepo baby called Brooklyn
[music] Beck. There's a lovely red
tractor there. I should have stopped and
shown you that cuz it was mint. Uh
Brooklyn [snorts] Beckham used to walk
this with his [music] dad, David, back
in the day. And uh it's now called
Anyway, by that's the Tan Hill Inn.
It's the highest pub in the British
Isles. It looks open and
we need to support local boozers, don't
we? Because for some reason they're on
the decline. I think the culture's
changed. Or is it because this
government's just rinsed us so much that
we ain't even got any money or time to
go to the pub? Is it a thing of the past
where people would do a hard day's work
and then go to the pub, four or five
pints,
back home, bit of tea, bed, repeat? Is
that gone now? Because people are just
slaves now, aren't we? We're just pushed
so hard for so little. And is it the end
of the day you're knackered? And do you
really want to be doing four or five
pints a night and then feeling like
the next day? Is it that has the culture
changed? The young people aren't going,
are they? Apparently,
the young people aren't going to the A
house as much. Do we still need the
British pub? I think yes. Cuz when I
look at that, I see just a beacon of
hope.
And the pubs that I've stopped in along
the way, happy to support them. Beacons
of hope. Loneliness
can is a killer. And in that first
boozer, the wheat chief that I was
stayed in on the morning, there was a
two tables set for one. There was one
for me and there was another one there
and it had a paper set up on it and
already had some cornflakes set out. And
they were like, "Oh, no, that's like Ron
or whatever." And then this old boy must
have been in his 90s
came down. He started reading paper and
all the ladies were just fussing over
him. And I just thought, you know what,
he that he's probably widowed and he
just gets that lovely warm people
looking after him, a bit of a refuge.
You don't need to get pissed here. You
can go to a pub and just just have some
snacks and a soft drink like I'm going
to now chat to a few locals. I think
they're important and I think they're a
part of our culture and I think we
should support the boozers as best we
can.
I think our drinking culture is a bit
skew with like going out on a Saturday
night and just getting absolutely on it
and making city centers a no-go area.
That's something else. But your local
boozers,
they do need support cuz they're uh
they're going under rapidly. And I don't
know why. I guess it's all the things
that I've just mentioned in it. But if
you know any other reasons, let me know.
highest a house in the British Isles. Uh
1,700 ft. It's got huge generators
generating all its own electricity. Big
snowmobiles cuz I bet it gets proper
remote and snowed in. And it is the
roughly the halfway point on the Penine
Way as well. So that's a nice little
stop off. I had a pint of Diet Pepsi
with ice, no food,
bounced. Got to keep my wits about me
because there is a turnoff. And now this
is the bit where I was scratching my
head because it's defined on the OS map.
The defining line is just the national
park. It's the defining line for all
national parks. And I think I've plotted
to walk. I think I've seen it as a route
when really it's just the edge of the
national park. Someone's ripped it off
so that it just says, "Well, we come to
come." L, how dare you? What we got?
As I feared, I have used the border
between Cumbria
H and the national park
as a hiking path when it's not. So, it's
going to have to be a map time from
here, I'm afraid.
We'll see what my options are. Got a bit
of a mare there. I can't risk just
heading off across the motor, can I?
Can I? No, I can't, mate. No. Oh, I've
got all the way back. This is
Oh, stay positive. Come on. We're all
right. Right back. Back here. And it's
this one. Heartbreaking behavior.
[snorts] Map time's just going to be
It's going to be triggering, isn't it?
It's going to be embarrassing.
Raven Sea, three mile.
Beautiful thing.
It's be rotten. Thanks for your service.
We'll go down to this bridge that's
taken his place. And look at this
signpost, mate. Nalled.
Look at the size of these unitets.
You get one of walking over you nets.
Uh I only wear cashmere from M&S, mate.
Now I'll do a normal one in case that
was a little bit too fruity.
Might have been a bit too fruity for
bushcraft dads.
Bit too fruity for bushcraft ads, would
it? No,
everything happens for a reason. And
this way, this new way is lovely. Very
pleased with it. And you have to be.
What am I going to do? Just beat myself
up if I got it wrong way. No, you just
play the cards you dealt. And this is a
good hand.
A pleasure to be joining the coast to
coast path. This has worked out
brilliantly.
Lovely [snorts] little detour. And now
we're joining the coast to coast path up
to uh nine standards which has all been
from what I gather redone cuz when I was
coming through there many moons ago it
was very boggy.
And now I think they've just they've
paved everything. They put them big um
York stone slabs down, new signposts
everywhere. So, it should be quite a
nice little bit this. I remember coming
through here as well. Just as I came
down that hill, I looked down. I was
like, I remember that bit of road. There
was a chicken on it
and I kept thinking, ah, I could do a
joke here about there being a chicken on
the road or crossing the road or
something. No, I don't think I did it,
but something to do with a chicken.
And here's the chickens.
Funny stuff.
Look at them. They're roof tiles with
little holes in them.
Got holes in them. York stone roof
tiles.
Here's me chickens.
Medic.
You remember me from coast to coast. I
was going the You probably won't
recognize me cuz I'm going the wrong
way. Right. These lads are just doing
the coast to coast.
>> What's your names?
>> Jerry.
>> Jack.
>> Jerry and Jack boy band.
>> It's Tom and Jerry.
>> It's Tom and Jerry. And I'm just going
to give you a knuckles on vid if that's
all right.
>> Yeah, mate. That was a weak one. Sorry,
mate.
>> Sorry, mate.
>> Uh, and there you go. They're doing it.
And have you is it cuz it's been redone
and it
>> not? Yeah, they got a lot of new stuff.
>> On the way up to the nine standards,
have they sorted that boggy bit out? Is
it
>> have they hid it's quite easy to get to
now?
>> There you go. Top tips from the boys.
>> So I've been like just on me to on me in
me own thoughts doing this Centurion
which is no longer the Centurion cuz the
map ain't right. So this is somewhere
else now. Is it the Haze 100? Yeah.
Within minutes of joining the coast to
coast [snorts] I bump into a couple of
lads. had a nice little chat. And it is
nice that to have people on the trail
who you can chat to and [snorts] you're
like, "Oh, where you planning to get to
today and where have you come from?"
It's a nice little thing. I hope that
people bump into each other in years to
come and have a chat like that like
where have you come from, how far have
you got to go, are you doing the
centurion? Yeah.
It fills my heart with joy. Since it
became a national trail, they've added
all these new bits. Lovely stuff.
Look at the glory. Wow.
Wow. You've got to
you've just got to you've got to respect
it.
The work. Come here. Yeah, it's it's
just a single path, but
these things weigh an absolute ton,
mate.
Went absolute ton and they're all butied
up lovely.
This is excellent. So, yeah, however
long ago it was, 8 years, 9 years when I
did the uh coast to coast, none of this
was here.
And uh I remember coming through this
bit and it was just a bogggy mess and
hard to to navigate because there was no
path cuz everyone just sort of must have
dispersed to uh best deal with the bog.
Them two lads, the JJs we'll call them
said that they stayed in Black Bull last
night and the new ad stayed in the Black
Bull when I did it. Um,
so they've only come from
K. Whoa.
Kirk B Steven, what are you doing, lads?
It's taking you a while.
I love it. Look at that. It's curved
round to meet up with stone.
[panting and sighs]
Be still my beating heart. Look at this.
Straight from from stone. Boom.
over at Boggy Bit
back onto stone. Yesesh. And if you're
watching this Jay and Jay, I hope you I
hope you got to the end. Okay. And I
hope you managed to chuck your stones in
the North Sea and get yourself a pint of
Wayne right in Robin's Bay.
Magical stuff, lads. Magical stuff.
Oh, this is interesting.
Nine Standards rig.
The Lake District
is the Nine Standards rig.
It's been lovely and windy. Sorry if you
can't hear anything, but it's made it
very cooling. Her foot's hurting a
little bit where all me I've got no
blister patches on, so I've just
blisters have uh
well, just all me blisters are hurting.
That's all really, but trying not to
focus on that.
I stopped.
I'm about a mile and a half out of Kirby
Stevens.
What's it called? Is it Kirby Stevens or
Steven? It doesn't matter. I'm thinking
of pitching here. I'll get a nice sunset
and it means that I can go into Kirk
Stevens tomorrow and the the shop will
be open so I can get some blister
patches. I've only had me breakfast
today and it's now 25 6 and I don't want
my hungry brain to be making decisions.
So, I'm going to have this and then see
where me head's at. Usual stuff. Toes
[snorts]
500
titanium pot. That's all I need. I don't
do any cooking really. I just boil water
to put my camp meals in. What? I just
boil water to put in my camp meals.
Brain's gone to mush.
Mush brain. Sto wind master pot stand
makes a world of difference.
I mean it skinted me staying in a house
last night. I was only supposed to stay
in once. Me spoon is just a wooden
spoon. It was made for me by Joey D.
Pastor Carbonara. Thanks.
Got my sun on. You might be thinking,
well, why didn't you put that on when it
was the heat wave? Too hot.
I don't know. That's the point, but I
tried it out. It was just too hot. It
was ridiculous cuz just having [snorts]
some against me skin and me hood up
was too much. Right, there it is. Not
bad.
Sunset from the Buddha. This tent is so
loud. This is my sleep setup. I've got
the flex tail wedge thing
to know the uh Neoare XM three season
quilt there. Lightened equipment.
And uh and that's me. And uh Oh my god,
you heard it. Honestly, it's like a
crisp packet. Really loud.
And then
[screaming]
look at that.
Yes,
Bonnie.
This is the worst ever, mate. It's so so
loud. It's just
caving in, man.
Oh my god.
There we go. A wonderful stay in this
pub. Can't recommend it enough if you do
do this hike. Definitely drop in there
for a gauge. On we go. A nice bit of
road work to start the day along this
quiet road just to get the legs working
to here. And then we're off onto the
mowers. Uh there was a few bits along
here that I got a little bit lost. I had
to double back on myself. But on we go
over West Mo along Anna side edge.
Lovely this lovely views. Stopped in
there for a fizzy drink and then on we
go. This is where I goofed. Let's get to
the other map. I followed this road
because I'd seen this
which is the defining line for the
national park
and it had linked it I'd linked that on
my OS map. If I zoom out, you can see it
goes down here across the mower
and over to nine standards rig where
this is where I was going to be going
anyway. Um, but if I pan out as well,
you can see that this is the alternate
route that I did around. So, it's
probably put a little bit of extra time
on, but it is a lovely um a lovely
route. But once I got up here, I looked
back and there was a path going off
here. So, I mean, if you want to try it,
you can. But from here, it didn't look
there wasn't a path from here. So,
whether you just keep going and the path
materializes, I don't know. But I wasn't
going to risk it because look at that.
There's all sorts going on there and you
just you're off at mower. There could be
some beautiful stuff along here, but I
wasn't about to risk it for a biscuit.
So, I followed this little road and then
we cut off here.
over that wonderful bridge. Some lovely
views and it is a lovely route to come
this
heading down and then we join on to the
coast to coast.
Got to around here we bumped into them
lads and then we keep going. Now this
you can see this path here is a that is
one of them paths that is a nothing path
really and that's how it used to be. It
used to just be just make your way
through this boggy area, but it's all
been redone since the coast to coast
became a national trail. It's all been
flagged with them wonderful pavers and
so it was quite easy walking
up here
and to the nine standards
and the stones started to come down
towards Kirk B. even and decided to call
it here for night four. And that is
where the weather turned on me. Thanks

fight with Need for Speed. I'm not
[music] I'm not switching the lane. Pick
up the pace through like that. I'm back
to the base.
Yeah.
