Video summary
In this comprehensive analysis of the Castle faction for *Heroes of Might and Magic III*, the video presents a detailed ranking system that aggregates various assets—including creatures, heroes, and buildings—into a single merit score based on their utility and cost-effectiveness. The evaluation begins with creature tiers, where early-game units like Pikemen and Halberdiers are deemed solid value but receive Bronze ratings, while Archers are penalized for serving primarily as stepping stones to Master Gremlins rather than long-term assets. Griffins are adjusted down to Bronze after accounting for the expensive Griffin Bastion upgrade requirement, whereas Crusaders earn a Silver rating due to their strong synergy with leadership skills and triple morale. The faction's true strength lies in its Tier 5 units; Angels are rated exceptionally high for their massive stats and stacking potential after the initial investment in the Portal of Glory, while Archangels, despite being preposterously strong, are ranked lower as Silver due to their prohibitive cost in random scenarios. Conversely, unupgraded Cavaliers are ranked extremely poorly for lacking viability compared to Angels, and specialized units like Monks and Zealots receive low scores because they force reliance on less desirable strategies.
The assessment of heroes reveals a clear distinction between economic powerhouses and situational specialists. Lord Hart stands out as a top-tier asset due to his starting Estates and gold generation capabilities, followed closely by Christian, whose Ballista provides immense early-game value, and Caitlyn, who offers significant daily income. In contrast, heroes like Orin and Edric are rated as reliable but not exceptional choices for their specific niches in archery and Griffin buffing, respectively. Several heroes face penalties due to the faction's inherent struggles or limited utility; for instance, Tyrus is downgraded because the Castle faction cannot effectively leverage Cavalier stacks, while Adele and Sonia receive low ratings for lacking secondary skills or relying on inherently weak abilities like Eagle Eye. Additionally, Ingam is viewed negatively for forcing reliance on Monks and Zealots, and Rion is considered average because the First Aid skill has limited impact in vanilla versions of the game.
Beyond individual units, the unique buildings and structures play a pivotal role in determining the faction's final standing, with some contributions being far more significant than others. The Drum Roll Stables are hailed as an absolute king among buildings for providing +400 movement, which drastically increases hero effectiveness, while the Blacksmith is essential for early-game Ballista production despite receiving a Bronze rating for its standard output. Other structures like the Mage Guild and Brotherhood of the Sword are rated low because their benefits, such as banning powerful spells or granting minor morale boosts during sieges, are deemed negligible compared to other options available in the game. Resource Silos also receive zero weight since they only buff wood and ore, which are rarely scarce enough to justify the investment in most scenarios. After calculating the base score of 63 before final adjustments and incorporating the substantial value of Angels and movement bonuses, the total score reaches 108 before being slightly adjusted upward.
Ultimately, the video concludes that while the Castle faction possesses undeniable strengths in its Tier 5 Angels and unique movement-boosting buildings, these advantages are often offset by high costs and limitations in lower tiers. The inclusion of *Horn of the Abyss* changes does not significantly alter the fundamental tier rankings or move specific units out of their established categories, reinforcing the idea that the faction's power is heavily dependent on early economic setup and the successful transition to high-tier units. After applying all necessary adjustments for new game mechanics and buff interactions, the final comprehensive score for the Castle faction is settled at 110. This rating reflects a balanced view of the faction as one that excels in specific late-game scenarios but requires careful resource management to overcome its weaknesses in early and mid-game unit diversity.

Hello my friends and welcome to the
Grand Faction ranking series for Heroes
of Might and Magic 3. Over the last few
years on the channel, we have gone into
absolutely devilish detail on every
facet of this game. We've gone right
down into individual creatures and
talked about them in a tier list. We've
looked at the hero classes. We've looked
at spells and skills.
And what this series is going to be
about is pulling all of that analysis
together [snorts] into a faction's
ranking list. I want to do this from the
ground up in the most uh well precise
manner I possibly can I think is the
word I would want to use. Okay. So each
individual component of the factions are
going to be taken together uh to build
up a score for that faction. So you can
see we've got the castle ready to go
here. I've got a score of zero so far um
which we will be iteratively increasing
as we move the assets that are inside
that town over onto these scales here on
the left. So, the idea is
uh for the smaller icons here, you can
see we've got 16 heroes and 14
creatures, uh all of the smaller icons
are going to have a waiting of one.
Like, think of it as 1 kilogram. So, I
think we'll begin with the creatures.
We'll work our way through here, dip
down into the heroes, and then move up
to the uh weightier stuff as we go. Now,
in the creatures tier list, I talked
about how the pikeman and the halier is
actually quite a strong unit. Um, I'm
probably slightly more of a fan of the
Pikeman, I think, uh, in the tier list
than the Halbadier, just in terms of
value for money. How likely I will be to
buy that unit and and and use it and
leverage it in the early part of the
game. Um, 10 HP is really really
generous for tier one. Uh, they're
really really good brawlers and fighters
and they'll stick with you right through
to the mid game, acting as blockers for
the uh, archery units in the game. Uh,
and yeah, because of their HP will still
be tending to stick around. So, I think
for I kind of said B for the in the tier
list and I think probably these two are
I'll still continue to use the left to
right being that this guy's maybe
pushing towards silver, but I think
they're a little bit better than stock
standard. Um, and I'm going to rank them
up here.
Okay, with the archers and marksmen.
Now, I absolutely spent 10 minutes
talking about how incredible marksmen
are. Both of these are absolutely
magnificent uh units. value for money in
the first week, the first couple of
weeks. Um, I can't remember a castle run
or I haven't absolutely belineed my way
to marksman with their two shots. Um, I
had them special ranked in the tier list
video and this is just absolutely no
exception here. These are absolute gold
star units. Um, the archer
is a really solid pick. And if you can't
quite get all the gold together, if
you're playing on a constrained start,
you might be with using your archers for
a while first.
Um, how much weight do they actually add
to the merit of the town? The fact that
they exist.
Yeah, I'm going to do it a little bit
differently, right? Because you might
have you might actually argue, well, the
fact that this upgrade exists, how
valuable is that to the town? How much
of a punch are you actually adding? The
point is that these don't stick around
for very long before they get upgraded
into these. So, we could accidentally
end up overranking the marksman by
giving the archer a really high score.
Whereas, with the tier list video, I was
more interested in talking about, well,
what about this actual creature? Are you
going to buy this creature and use it
for long periods of time?
So, with that relationship in mind, I'm
actually going to be a little bit meaner
to the archer. I don't think that you uh
the fact that it exists adds a lot of
weight to the merit of the town. Uh,
it's kind of the same thing with
gremlins and master gremlins, right?
Like the fact that gremlins exist is
kind of irrelevant. We'll get to that
when we get to the tower video. The main
reason they exist is to become master
gremlins. And this is a little bit true
with archers. Noting that they are fine
uh fine combat troops in and of their
own right. If you pick up a stack of
them for some reason, if you're not
playing as the castle and you get uh
diplomacy or something with archers,
you'll use those archers and be quite
happy.
That's not of course uh an element we're
factoring in here either because we're
trying to look at the absolute merit of
uh the town as we go. So for that same
reason I don't think halbaders the fact
that they exist adds a heck of a lot
more to the conversation than uh if they
didn't exist not not not hugely right so
if the halbadier was a worse unit how
much am I going to care
they just the fact that they exist just
doesn't add a lot of merit to the town
um because they're fine troops but not
really really good this I'm giving it a
bronze still because in week one even
week two going into week three. These
can really make a difference um in that
early stage of the game. Right now, I
also have already immediately broken a
rule. I wanted to try and keep the score
updated as I go. So, especially to
demonstrate how this is going to work.
Right. So, we've already put four assets
on the board. Uh we have each of them
has a waiting of one. So, it's 2 + 2 + 3
is 7 + 5 is 12. So, we're already up to
12. We'll talk now about the griffins.
One thing I should have mentioned at the
beginning with the unique buildings that
are available in the castle, you'll see
that I haven't added the Griffin
Bastion, which is an upgrade to the
Griffin dwelling that gives you an extra
three griffins per week. I'm
intentionally not including any horde
dwellings in this in these rankings
because of the fact that their existence
is already going to be baked in to the
merit of the creatures themselves. I
also haven't, while I'm talking about
things that are in the castle that
aren't on the list here, you'll notice
as well that there's no shipyard and
there's no lighthouse. In the random
maps I play, you can't build shipyards.
And the lighthouse uh requires a
shipyard before you can build it as
well. Griffins, let's talk griffins. My
initial ranking for these two was
actually really strong. And in the
comments section when I came to revisit
the creatures tier list, you guys
convinced me they weren't actually all
they cracked up to be. One key thing I'd
forgotten is that you need to build the
barracks first in the background here.
that um where you get the tier four
creatures from before you can actually
build the Griffin Bastion and that sets
them back a little bit. They are
powerful units, but you got to pay
you've got to pay some serious money to
get to get hold of them. [snorts] Um I
think the Royals fell down to just
barely clinging on to the back end of
the A tier last time. Um, in the last
run I played as Orin, I yeah, didn't
find myself wanting to go into this, but
I was an archery kind of focused thing
and I was able to protect my marksman
um, pretty well. I think in general both
units are strong. The fact that griffins
are available uh, as an option is a
really really solid choice for the
castle to go into in that early game.
Very very beginner friendly kind of unit
with the double retaliations or the
infinite retaliations on the royal
griffins. Uh, it's like a forgiving tier
three. It's a really forgiving tier
three. If you buy it and buy them and
fight with them, they'll probably brawl
pretty well for you, even if you've
gotten into a bad engagement, one that
you shouldn't have gotten into. I think
what I'm going to say is that both of
them deserve um a place up here. It
might be that you invest in normal
griffins
um in that early part of the game and
don't upgrade them for a while and they
do a good job for you with movement six
flying big beefy bodies etc. Also, if
you do pile in, get the bastion uh and
invest in the royal griffins. The fact
that they exist is a really really good
thing for the castle. They might be a
late game doomstack even and find their
way up here for you in the particular
run that you're playing. I think in
general I'm happy with bronze for both.
And that means we'll be adding six to
the score. Okay, let's move on then to
swordsmen and crusaders. And this was a
controversial one. When I first recorded
the video, I was really mean to both, in
particular the crusaders. And again, uh
in the comment section, you guys
highlighted that. Wait a second, Paul.
No, you can get swordsmen actually
straight after uh your archers.
Okay, the upgrade to crusaders is not as
expensive as I had thought when I first
recorded that video.
And so with a lot of back and forth when
I did the revised Hotar version of the
creatures tier list, I did promote the
Crusaders up. Now, maybe we should start
with the Crusaders. How how much does
the castle depend on the Crusaders for
their uh for their game plan and for
their virtue? How much do the Crusaders
add to the awesomeness of this town? And
I think generally the answer is
massively so. The reason being that the
two attacks synergize so nicely with the
leadership, the triple plus three morale
that they're probably going to have. Um
the resources to get there for to
upgrade that barracks uh are not
preposterous, right? We're talking a bit
of crystal. Yeah, five crystal. And um
again, if you can keep them alive uh and
you can buff them, if you can bless and
haste and do these kinds of things to
them, which uh the mage guild is well
set up to do,
they're just amazing. They're just
really, really strong.
Uh, I gave them an A in the revised tier
list. I can't see any reason not to give
them a really solid silver. Um, here
they're not quite at that spectacular.
Oh man, I've got to put everything else
aside while I beline to these and get as
many of them as possible. That might be
true actually depending on your build,
what hero you're playing. But I think in
the round, um, silver is a good score
for the crusaders. for the swordsman.
Meanwhile, how much does the fact that
the swordsman exist really help? Well, I
don't really want to be fighting with
swordsmen for very long. They've got
sort of the archer disease. I I I I
don't think they stink. I mean, they're
certainly not valueless. You can fight
with them and be pretty happy. This
might be a bit too mean for them, but
the fact that they exist is just okay.
It's just fine. uh they're not adding a
tremendous amount to the story of of
what your campaign is going to end up
looking like. I don't think I'm going to
do this for the other factions as well.
I know that swordsman probably deserve
more like a C and you think, well,
they're a C ranked unit. They should at
least be up here. But how often do you
really walk around with swordsmen
in the games that you play really and
buy them and not upgrade them?
Not that much, right? Whereas the
griffins, I feel like, well, both mo
both both modes of griffin are are solid
when I think about it a bit more.
Anyway, with the sum total of both
gentlemen at one and four, we have to
add five to the score. So, we're
motoring along pretty well here. Let's
move on to the monks and zealots. Monks
and zealots.
I tend to build the monastery, move on
pretty quickly. I don't pile into monks.
I will once the stack starts to get big
enough. I'll go back and buy a blob of
zealots, which is fine. You know, if
I've got the money, I'll upgrade them.
I'm not going to buy the monks except as
kind of defenders for my castle,
even with the monk specialist, which is
one of the clerics, if I recall
correctly. Um, maybe it's Ingam.
I uh I don't care. Like, I just don't
think they're that good. They're too
slow. The damage is acceptable, but not
insane. I ranked them pretty low. I gave
them like a D a D minus in the um
creatures tier rankings and I I don't
think I really want to change that. Um
yeah, D minus. I've got my little I've
got the the list as it stood over on
another screen here. The fact that the
monks exist, how much does it help the
story of what the castle's doing? Oh,
I'm going to be brutal here. I've got to
be brutal. I can't just say everything's
amazing. I don't care. They're not
terrible. You can buy the monastery and
buy some monks and then go and use them
to do something. You can do that. I
think they're less relevant than the
swordsman though. The Zealot
The Zealot's okay, isn't he? I mean, can
he get up here? Maybe the Zealot
just an okay tier five unit that isn't
too bad.
No, no, I I'm going to let him drop just
off here. Yes, I'll buy. Yes, I'll spend
the money. I will do it. I I could be
persuaded that this belongs up here. Um
but we we'll we'll leave this here for
now. So it's only a score of an extra
two for the monks and and the zealots.
So we can see here that what's really
going to matter with this score is
individual assets scoring highly uh and
in terms of dragging the team up,
putting that extra weight on the on the
rope to drag the team up towards a high
score uh which is really what we're
looking for. So, okay, we have the now
we're on to um tier six units. And as
you can see, the champions are going to
be have a waiting of two rather than
one. And that's not because champions
are amazing. It's because in general
across all the factions, I'm saying that
the tier six upgraded, tier seven
unupgraded, count that a little bit
more. They just matter more in terms of
the virtue of the town, what they're
going to do for you over the long run.
Now, as for unupgraded champions, what
these guys are called as cavaliers,
right? The Cavalere for me ranked
really, really poorly in the tier list
just because it just doesn't really do
what it says on the tin. The jousting
bonus is cool and everything, but it can
only do seven moves,
which is just like look at look at the
look at the icon. It looks like
something that should have nine moves,
right? I mean, it's it should be a fast
unit. Seven is too slow. I also find
that the training grounds themselves are
expensive. Then the models themselves,
the cavaliers themselves are expensive.
Another important thing that's going on
here is that the cavaliers are fighting
for your attention against the portal of
glory. So the training grounds and the
cavaliers, the money that you spend to
buy the the grounds and the cavaliers is
competing for your attention with the
portal of glory and your first
uh tier seven creatures, the unupgraded
angels. And that means that man oh man,
they struggle for me. As we've explained
in the past, you don't need the training
grounds in order to build the portal of
glory.
Um, and that puts them way down. All
right, because the angels are just so
amazing.
Uh, the fact that the Cavalere exists,
how much does it matter
in my games that I play?
Almost never. I I'm It's It's down the
bottom, but it's almost like
I don't know if this thing even gets Am
I going to be brutal and give it
nothing? [laughter]
[snorts]
Yeah. Well, what is going to get
nothing? If If not this, what what else
throughout the factions gets gets a
zero? Um, how often do I pile into
cavaliers
with the intention of building a big
stack of cavaliers, not upgrading them
to champions, running around and doing
my thing with them? Never.
If I get the Cavaliers and I'm stuck
using them for a while, that's okay. But
if I get anything more than six or seven
of these,
um, and I'm finding myself spending
money on it for some reason, probably
because I've conquered a town or
something and there's some sitting there
waiting to be bought or something like
that, then, um, I'm going to upgrade to
champions. So, I don't think the fact
that cavaliers exist matters for the
virtue of the castle. Controversial,
maybe.
[laughter]
Let's see.
Um, I'm going to do something annoying
to all of you now and divert off to the
other 1 kilogram um assets in the castle
before returning to look at this. Don't
worry, champions will be better than um
eagle eye [laughter]
uh when we come back to uh to do those.
Okay. Yeah. So, and look, we can always
revisit this before the end. 25 seems
like a pretty miserable score so far.
sort of castle is actually one of the
spoiler alert one of the towns I'm
probably more in favor of out of the
entire list but um I don't know let's
see how we go
heroes right each hero adds 1 kilogram
of weight to the scales okay so Orin is
up first now I have done a detailed hero
uh
class hero class rankings list in the
past and I'll be drawing on some of that
wisdom we can call it wisdom him as I
go. Orin is a really interesting knight.
His specialty specialtity is archery. He
does also come with the uh standard
leadership skill uh as his ex extra
secondary skill as do all of the other
knights in the roster. I've talked
before about how I like the two attack,
two defense uh combo for starting out as
a knight. and uh of course the skills
that he will be um offered as he uh
levels up all gel quite nicely with
archery and with leadership as well.
Um so I think generally speaking uh what
I'm going to do with these heroes, the
idea is you've got 16 kilograms to put
on the scales and we're thinking about
how the presence of this hero helps
the cause, [laughter]
right? How does the presence of this
hero help the cause? When you roll Orin
in the tavern or if you randomize your
hero at the start of your scenario, how
happy or sad are you to see him?
I I'm I'm moderately okay with it. I'm
cool with Orin. I mean, the knight is a
solid class in general, and that will
also help to prop up um these scores.
Archery in the vanilla game. In the
vanilla game, adding that archery skill,
being a really, really excellent archer
does gel nicely with the marksman. Of
course, you will care a lot more about
zealots if you're playing Orin.
Is he bronze?
Knights in general, I think, are going
to be bronze. They're they're a really
solid class. So, I might just put him
down here at the tail end of bronze. He
might get kicked down to this sort of
I'm using the shield spell as a kind of
it's okay that you exist. Thanks for
coming along. You you are helping me.
The force field spell I'm using to
represent the fact that okay, you exist.
Maybe I'll use you. Okay, you might add
some weight to the campaign. And then um
we've got good old Golia to represent
the stuff that just doesn't matter.
Okay, Orin matters. Okay, that's what
I'm saying. Her specialty is archers and
marksmen themselves rather than being an
archery expert. And that means she's a
little bit more
well specialized. Okay. Right. So it's
got to be exactly archers and marksmen,
but they get massively more powerful
under tutelage than they do under Orin.
Orin can pivot off and become uh a lord
of the elves or a lord of the titans. Uh
he could be used by other factions. Not
so much. Okay. How does existence help
uh in the
I don't know the story of the castle?
More than Orin. I think more than Orin.
Um, if your archers or marksmen die or
they get focused down, she drops off
though, so she can be a bit glass
cannony. It depends whether you've got a
second castle town on your map and you
can really make sure that these guys get
protected and survive right through to
the mid game and even the late game. So,
for that reason, I'd like to say in
absolute terms, she's oh yeah, she's
amazing. She's cool because she
synergizes perfectly here. But in
reality, the fact she exists probably
just adds a solid weight, I think, to
the to the scales in the round.
Edric, meanwhile, is the griffin lord.
Okay, so every every griffin under his
um command gets a buff. Griffins are a
little bit more situational, as we
talked about before. You might not be
piling into griffins. often I've been
hiring Edric more is just the fact that
he's a knight and I with no plan to ever
really give him any griffins. Knights
are quite solid, but his specialty in
the vanilla game we'll be talking about.
There is a change we need to make for
Horn of the Abyss with everyone who's
got these specialtities, but I think
he's just a solid uh hero to have in the
roster.
Uh if he shows up in your tavern and
you're like, "Oh, him. Okay, cool.
That's cool." Yeah.
Now, this girl's name is Sylvia, right?
Silia.
>> Sylvia is the navigation hero. And what
I'm going to do with all the navigation
heroes is give them a kind of I'm going
to give navigation a kind of a neutral
um rating because the alternatives seem
poor. Giving it a gold is poor. There
are some maps where having navigation
will be absolutely clutch. And giving it
zero because there are some maps where
there's no water also doesn't seem very
good. The random maps I've been playing
lately have a good mix of water and
navigation is kind of a medium skill on
those on those maps as as I'm playing.
Um, so how much do I care? I think she's
probably right there alongside Edric.
Um,
how much does she help? Yeah, it's maybe
not quite as good as Edric.
She's okay, though. Lord Hart is really,
really good. I like Lord Hart. He's
basically really wealthy. His his whole
gimmick is he starts with estates as
well as leadership and he's a specialist
in estates. Now, Horn of the Abyss also
buffs the estate skill when we get to
that. So, we it turns out we are going
to have to think about Horn of the Abyss
quite a lot when we get there. Um,
I just realized I haven't been updating
the score, but like just bear with me
for a second. Um, Lord Hart,
I love the fact that he exists. So, so
if I've started my campaign and I've
chosen my starting hero, let's say I've
chosen, I don't know, Adele or, I don't
know, Rion or Christian or something or
whoever I've chosen, maybe I've chosen
Orin, and then Lord Hart rocks up in the
tavern and says, "Hey, would you like me
to be your offsider?" Absolutely, Lord
Hart. Yes, please, mate. If I roll him
for my starting hero, if I'm
randomizing, that's fine. I'm I'm rich.
Rich beyond all imagination. I love the
gold buffing heroes. I do like to play
on the resourceless start, the king
level difficulty on my random maps. So,
I snap these guys up when I see them.
How much does he help the story? The
fact that the faction wants things that
attract you to that faction hugely for
me. I love Lord Hart.
I don't love him quite as much as a gold
level despite the fact that he adds
gold. But I think he's a really really
good addition to the roster and he makes
me feel like Castle is good [laughter]
if that makes sense. Pause here cuz we
have to update the score. I've got to
get into better habits here. Now the
reason I slipped off updating the score
is because we gave someone a zero which
requires no update. So let me just check
here.
Okay, Sorcerer is the champion. uh not
champion rather crusader and swordsman
master. She buffs their attack and
defense and gives them plus one movement
just like Edric does with the griffins
and does with the archers and marksmen.
How much do I care about the fact
Sorcerer exists in the roster?
As you move up to tier four, tier five,
and tier six specialtities,
my care level drops off. Okay. It just
drops off because it's not always going
to be the case that I'm going to be able
to engineer a big stack, a big doom
stack of crusaders for exactly Sorcerer
to use. It might be the case that I'm
hiring Sorcerer in week three because
I'm already on level five or seven or
level 9 with somebody else, let's say. I
hire Sorcerer and yes, I've got
swordsman and stuff, but guess what?
They're busy serving in my main army,
right? Right. If Sor is my starting
hero, I've got to muck around for three
or four weeks before I can get a good
doom stack of these up and ready for her
to leverage. So, I don't love tier four,
five, and six specialtities in vanilla
especially. The buff just isn't that
good. So, I think Sorcera is dragging
her heels. She's not as strong as the
other knights, but she is a knight 2211
in terms of attack, defense, spell
power, and knowledge. And then she has
the leadership uh which is really really
solid. Her secondary skill, secondary
skill is basic offense, which just goes
beautifully with the Crusaders, but it
also goes well with other things as
well. How upset am I about Sorcera being
in the list? She's not a dud. She's not
like a joke hero, so I think she's okay.
I'm going to let her just be part of
that solid
ranking next to
Sylvia.
She's probably looking at this. She's
probably looking at this seat here if
I'm honest. And by the time we get to
Yeah. Tyrus. We'll come we'll maybe do
Tyrus next. Tyrus is the Cavaliers
version and champions. She buffs
Cavaliers and champions.
Um, and her secondary uh additional
skill is tactics. Now, tactics is
magnificent. So, that's that's really
really good. But, oh, buffing tier six
just does not interest me in the
slightest. I don't like you as a
starting hero. If I'm hiring you as a
helper later in the game, Tyrus, you're
never getting you're never getting given
any champions.
So, out of the two of them, I will give
Tyrus the booby prize. She's the worst
knight, I think, on this list. Um,
2211 leadership tactics. Magnificent,
but her specialtity is just wanting. I
think probably if Sorceria wasn't a
problem, I'd promote Tyrus to to live
here because of the fact that, you know,
that the fundamentals, leadership,
tactics, well, that's really really
good, right? Her her secondary skills,
starting secondary skills are really,
really strong. But I'm going to punish
one of them um for the fact that they
are special specializing in creatures
that I'm not really able to leverage as
easily
um in my games. Okay. And I've done the
same thing again. We have to we have to
update the score uh as always. So, we've
added three to the score here. Okay, now
we're on to Christian. And I really like
these heroes. Christian is an artillery
hero who comes with a free ballista. And
that is fantastic when you're starting
out the game week one with no resources
and Christian rocks up.
Hell yes. I'm going to actually start
leveling you men and get that artillery
rocking because the ballista really does
make a difference in those early fights.
You can pair them with your archers. Uh
maybe you can delay getting marksman and
use your gold for something else. If um
if things are going really well with
yourself and Christian, maybe that might
be a reason why you're going to
griffins. I don't know. I haven't
thought about it in a while. But yeah,
Christian, the fact he exists,
brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Um hire
him later in the campaign to do some
stuff. You can level him up. He'll be a
really good brawler uh because of that
artillery skill and the free ballista.
Really, really good economy impact um
from from Christian. His leadership
obviously is fantastic. What is his
secondary secondary skill, if I can call
it that? Let me just check. It is Oh, of
course. Artillery. Yeah. Uh so,
excellent. I think you're up here.
Uh the fact you exist makes me want to
play this faction just that little bit
more. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's a silver
star uh hero. Christian the Knight. one
of the better ones.
Really good class in general though.
Like when we go through the other
factions, there are going to be some
hero classes that are meandering down
here. Like if you watch my hero hero
class rankings list, you know, there are
some factions where all eight of the
heroes uh all all eight of that class
are going to be meandering down here at
the bottom. So it's a really really
solid class, the knight. So we've given
Christian a four. That brings us up to
46, I think. And we're on now to the
clerics. A dealer is number one. Her
specialtity is the bless spell. Uh she
gets better and better at bless as she
goes in the vanilla game. Uh what that
means is that instead of dealing maximum
damage, she adds extra additional
pancaking damage on top of that maximum
[snorts] uh as she gets more and more
skilled, which can be extremely powerful
if she's leading in particular an army
of lower tier creatures. In Horn of the
Abyss, that changes and she gets even
better again. She is one of the better
clerics. Her second secondary skill is
diplomacy. Uh now in the vanilla game,
diplomacy is completely preposterous. Uh
and I tend to ban diplomacy from the
random maps that I play. Now, with that
in mind,
if you're if you're going into templates
and banning things and tuning your own
scenario, you're in that horn of the
abyss mode of of the game already.
Anyway, if you're playing the vanilla
game, we have to assume and imagine that
diplomacy is switched on. Okay. one of
probably the most powerful skills in the
vanilla game. And that means a dealer is
actually really really strong. Bless is
amazing. It's a really really good thing
to know early on. And ironically, one of
the things that she might want to learn
is leadership. Uh to become a knight by
proxy as she goes because blessing these
creatures,
uh having leadership go off while
they're blessed. Oh, just magnificent.
Uh she'll probably also want to pick up
water magic and learn the prayer spell
to give everything that that same uh
combat attacking combat buff that that
uh the faction is know known so well
for.
The fact a deal is in the faction makes
me how much happier.
Is she silver? She's a really really
good cleric. I mean the diplomacy is
bonkers in vanilla. Um, this will be an
interesting one when we come to talk
about the Horn of the Abyss because
diplomacy is nerfed in Horn of the
Abyss, but bless is her her bless
ability is buffed. I think she's one of
the better clerics. I'm going to
begrudgingly give her a silver.
You are happy to see her in your tavern.
Right. How happy? This happy?
Maybe she should drop down to bronze,
but the cleric in general is not as
strong a class for me as the knight. You
know, they have the uh the two the 0122
profile. So, zero attack, one defense,
and then two and two for spell power and
knowledge, which is solid for a
spellcaster, but not the greatest.
I think I'm happy with her there for
now. Cuthbert, meanwhile, is our
weakness hero. His specialty is
weakness. He knows it straight off the
cuff. And his secondary secondary skill
is basic estates, just like uh Lord
Hart, which is really, really good.
Um, how happy am I to see Cuthbbert
though when I when I roll him
moderately?
I'll hire him as a secondary hero. I'm
okay with him as a main hero. He doesn't
make the best main hero in the world if
I'm honest. Being good at weakness has a
cap. There's a cap on how great that is.
you know, as the game waxes on, if you
get into week [snorts]
month five, month six of the game, or
maybe it's month four, five, six, or
whatever, late game, the fact he's
really, really good at weakness is just
it sort of it sort of drops off a little
bit. I like the estates.
The class is solid. I think he's all
right. I think he's here. I think he's
maybe down here. Cuthbird.
Amazing artwork on Cuthbird, eh? Just
awesome. [sighs]
Now, Adelaide, similarly, amazing
artwork. What does Adelaide do again?
Oh, yeah. She's the Frost Ring expert.
She knows Frost Ring out of the gate.
She also has advanced wisdom, uh, rather
than having an extra secondary skill,
which is a bit of a bummer. Adelaide.
Yeah, Frost Ring. There's going to be
other things she's going to want to do
with her spell points as she levels up
and gets bigger. Not having a starting
secondary skill kind of stinks. It's
nice to be able to throw a Frost Ring, I
suppose, in the first week. How much do
um how much does her presence change my
excitement about the faction? Not very
much, actually.
I I'm going to be cruel. I'm going to be
cruel to Adelaide, which seems mean, but
I think
Oh, I don't know. She could maybe just
make it into the solid list up here with
Sorcerer.
Maybe.
Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. Let's come back. I
I'm being mean on purpose, but I because
I have to get some I have to get a good
stratification of waiting on the scales.
Um yeah, let's give her a one. I've done
that thing again where I've started the
clerics and completely forgotten to do
the score. So, let's see what have we
got. Adele Adila is at four. We've added
Cuthbird at two. That's six. And we've
added added point. So, we need to add
seven to the score. Okay. The next cab
off the rank is Ingam. Kind of an
interesting cleric. This guy, I didn't
talk much about him in the um hero class
rankings. Ingam's deal is that he is a
specialist at helping monks and zealots
fight better. He also has this weird
thing going on where he knows curse,
[laughter]
which is really really uh odd because of
the fact that um in the where's he gone?
Um curse is a spell that you can't learn
in the castle. It's actually a banned
spell. You'll you won't see curse and
it's obviously one of the better spells
in the game um to get to get your hands
on. So, he's a really, really
interesting guy. A combat buffing monk
buffing
uh dude, magician or let's let's call it
hero of magic.
Um, who gets to know curse? I don't know
what likelihood he would get to roll
basic fire magic though when he levels
up. Does he roll basic fire magic as a
cleric? I don't know.
Um,
I don't know how likely that is. It
probably isn't very likely, actually. It
might even be a zero or like a 5enter or
something. I'm not sure.
So, the fact that Ingam exists in the
list, how good, how exciting is that?
Uh, how much does it prop up the virtue
of the town when he shows up in the
tavern?
I think it's pretty bad actually. I
think Ingam is adding probably doing
more harm than good by showing up in the
tavern in place of somebody else. So, I
don't like him. I don't want to hire him
and use him for anything other than
running around. I don't want to give you
a doomstack of zealots in the late game.
In ingum,
I'm not going to build my campaign
around making that happen.
Cleric is still a solid class with that
said, but I just don't think you're
bringing enough to the table, my mate.
Is that too cruel?
Maybe that's a little too cruel. The
cleric is an okay class. He's okay. He's
all right.
Ah, barely, barely, barely, barely. I'll
I'll put him here. He's clinging on by
his fingernails to this tray [laughter]
of the scales.
All right, how we doing? So, we're on to
now SA. And SA is
total garbage, I'm afraid. Amazing
artwork.
Um, she just looks incredible. But yeah,
uh as we as we know, eagle eye um and
her specialtity is eagle eye. So her
secondary first starting secondary skill
aside from wisdom is eagle eye and then
she's a specialist. She gets really good
at eagle eye as she goes.
So yeah, Sonia knows dispel uh in her
spell book off the cuff. So, a hero of
eagle eye with the specialty in eagle
eye, uh, every single one of these,
right throughout all of the factions is
going to get the very worst possible
ranking. Um, if you haven't watched any
of my other videos, um, I probably
mention eagle as a joke many times. Uh,
you can, uh, check those out on the
channel if you want to hear me waxing on
about how bad that is.
Okay, where are we headed next? We've
got Loinus,
next cab off the rank. Now, Lois is a
really cool cleric. He is a specialist
at the prayer spell, and he obviously
knows prayer uh as a starting condition.
His secondary skill is learning. And in
the vanilla game, unfortunately,
learning is terrible.
And the reason it's terrible is because
of the I've done that bloody thing again
where I've forgotten to add the score.
So, Ingam adds one to the score, right?
>> Yeah. Yeah, in a vanilla game, um,
learning kind of takes up one of your
eight slots. As opposed to in a game
like Battle Brothers, which I hardly
recommend, by the way, if you're looking
for a break from Heroes 3 at some point,
uh, you take the learning skill, it's
called student, uh, you get to the top
of the um, chain of skills. You you get
a leveled up um, character, and the
skill gets given back to you at the end,
right? In Heroes, the skill never gets
given back to you. It's one of your
eight skills forever. Uh, and that's a
problem. There's a massive opportunity
cost from taking learning, especially in
the vanilla game. It's one of the worst
skills. But his prayer specialtity is
really, really nice. Prayer is an
amazing spell. Being able to cast it
early in the game, and then as he levels
up, it gets better and better and
better. You can really build Loinus into
uh a house. Um, he loves things like
obviously crusaders, the brawling kind
of creatures, the griffins. Uh, he'll
work well with cavaliers, champions.
They all want to be prayed. Okay. Um, of
course your archers want to be prayed as
well and that'll work okay. Uh, the
angels don't really need prayer, but uh,
they'll work with it. U, but it's that
tier three, four, and six, uh, you know,
to that are really going to benefit the
most from it. [snorts] Um, how happy are
you to play the game knowing that Loinus
is in the pool when he shows up in your
as your starting hero or if he shows up
somewhere? Pretty happy. I think he's
one of the better ones.
bronze for loinus.
Not quite as good as a dealer.
Yeah, he could maybe scooch into here,
could he? I think he's pretty solid. I
think he's pretty solid. I'm going to
give him a really good score. Uh cuz
I've been pretty mean to all the other
clerics.
Okay, so that's a four for Lous.
And we're on now to Caitlyn. Caitlyn is
yet another cleric in the castle town,
and her specialtity is that she gives
you an extra 350 gold per day, which is
just lovely. I mean, it's awesome. I'm
looking here to see what her second
secondary skill is. She's obviously got
wisdom, and then her secondary secondary
skill is intelligence,
which is a fine skill for a spellcaster
to have. I don't think she's quite as
upsidy as Lord Hart. Uh I don't want to
give her a silver, but uh her existence
in the roster. Happy face. Yes, please.
She's she's good. She's pulling her
weight. Let's say her 1 kilogram counts
a lot more than SA's 1 kilogram
[laughter]
uh in terms of the weight that we're
adding to the scale. So that's a three
for Caitlyn. Last but not least is Rion.
He is the first aid guy and his
secondary skill obviously is first aid
along with wisdom starting spell of
stone skin. First aid is a pretty stinky
skill in vanilla. It's a heck of a lot
better in version 1.81 of Horn of the
Abyss, which we'll come to later. Um
yeah, being an excellent uh first aer.
Yeah, it's a 5% per level bonus to the
first aid skill, but all the first aid
skill does is heal the top creature of
your uh stack. So, he gets a bit better
at doing it. Quite often, first aid will
cap out. You've got the skill to expert
first aid, and you're healing that
champion from 50 HP back up to 120 HP
anyway. So, the fact that he's a he's
good at first a kind of doesn't matter.
He does start with a tent, which is
okay. But having that specialtity, eh, I
think we're in Sorceria territory,
so I might just do this. I've
intentionally made these big enough so
that they can stack. He's okay. He He's
a fine cleric. You could do business
with him. Between him and Adelide, I
think one of them needs to be here. One
of them needs to be up here. I think
that's okay. We'll allow him to score a
two. Okay. And we have all the creatures
and heroes on the scales. And currently
the castle weighs 63. As for what comes
next, well, the last 1 kilogram asset we
have is the blacksmith. The reason I'm
including blacksmiths in these lists
is that different blacksmiths give you
different equipment. Um, generally
speaking, in the vanilla game, you're
going to want to see ballistas is the
best one. First A tents, also not too
bad. And then you can also get ammo
carts from some factions, which are
pretty pretty terrible in vanilla and
haven't really got much further use in
Horn of the Abyss either. You get
ballistas from the castle town. The
blacksmith is a building you can't
choose to build. Like, you just have to
build it. Like, you've got no choice.
It's as as you develop your town, it's
absolutely critical in the chain, very
early in the chain. typically building
it in one week one. Okay. So, it's not
about is the blacksmith worth bothering
building. It's more about like how good
is the ballista compared to the other
stuff you could get. I think for
ballistas, I'm just going to say that
they're solid. Um Christian gives you a
free one, so there's no real interaction
there. I think when I see a blacksmith
with ballistas, I'm just going to give
it a a bronze. Ammo cart ball ammo cart
blacksmiths are going to get zero. And
then the first aent maybe will get a
two. There is also in Horn of the Abyss,
we have the uh cannon uh in one of the
factions, in the cove faction, which
we'll maybe we'll come to when we get to
that when we get to the cove. Um
probably much later in the series cuz
we're doing all of the vanilla uh all of
the vanilla towns first and doing the
hotel ones at the end. Okay, now we're
on to the heavy hitters. Now, the idea
is that these assets count for more. So,
when we add, if we actually can remember
to give the blacksmith the score it
needs, we'll do that now.
adding three. Every time we add an asset
on uh from this list, we're going to be
uh doubling its impact. Okay, starting
off with the upgraded tier six creature
of the faction, which is the champion.
Now, the champion is a significant
upgrade on the Cavalere. You get to uh
movement nine. You also have, we didn't
talk much about the cavalere's jousting
bonus. This idea that you deal more
damage uh the further you run before you
make your attack, which makes uh life
really, really interesting. Uh yeah, the
movement 9 is really solid. The only
thing is they are expensive and they are
an alternative to angels to portal of
glory and pouring your money and effort
into getting your angels and that still
puts a hard cap on them for me. Um the
fact that they exist in the town, how
does it improve
the viability of that town? I think
they're solid. Um I do think they're
solid. If you've got money
and you've not gone into archangels yet,
you might do it. You might. If you've
got a big stack of cavaliers unpurchased
in your town, you might go, you know
what? What's the best use of my money
here? Well, I know what I could do is I
could upgrade the training grounds and
get all these guys together as champions
and say no thank you to either angels or
archangels. There could be a reason why
you do that. If you are swimming in
money, right, if you're playing a
scenario where you've got tons and tons
of resources, you've already got the
archangels, you're happy, you're looking
for something else to spend your money
on, they're amazing. They're great. The
champions are fine for that in that
scenario. For me, in the resourceless
environment, though, that I'm playing
in,
I can't give these more than a shield,
right? The fact that they're here,
that's it's fine. They're good. They're
okay. the fact that they're in the
roster. I I I'm not sad. I don't hate
them. I'll spend money on them. I'll go
and do it, but it's not making me super
excited. I'm not going to go and be
beline and pour my resources into doing
champions when I've got other things
that I need that need my attention
instead. So, I think it's a solid
uh creature in the roster.
Um the fact that it exists is
meaningful. It's it's far from a zero.
It's not a one. I think there are two. I
think there are two. And that means
we're adding a total of four to the
score. So the mass is two. We multiply
by the score of two, which gives us
four. Now we're on to my favorite
creature in the whole town, the basic
angel. So in the creatures tier list, I
talked about how value for money.
When I use that to dictate my uh
decisions for for creature rankings, the
angel just absolutely stands head and
shoulders above everything else in the
entire town.
um because of the fact of for there's
two reasons. Firstly, the first version
of the portal of glory is expensive. But
having gotten over the line with it, you
then only need to spend three grand per
guy to get the angels. You can also
stack your angels with other angels that
you might win out on the adventure map
from conquering the Griffin Conservatory
locations.
They tend to be just such a strong solid
investment. You get this huge body, 200
HP. You get the 50 damage with no
variance on that damage. 50 damage every
time. No arguments, which is a bit of a
nombo when we're coming to blessing and
uh you know, a dealer, for example, is a
bit of a nombo with a dealer. Um even
though she still helps them
um as to use that example, one gems per
guy. I can find the one gems. That's
that's that's okay. I'll find the one
gems. We'll make it work, right? Um, I
love angels. I think they're a really,
really solid thing. I'm going to skip
past the training grounds to build the
portal of glory so that I can get my uh
angels starting to descend down the
staircase into my town. Uh, and then I'm
going to hire them and I'm going to go
run around the battlefield, run around
the map using the angel to kill things,
using the angels to get leverage and
ratchet up my team, start to give uh
that snowball effect. Um, so huge
utility, something I desperately want to
go and do.
They're up here. They're super duper
duper. The fact that they exist in the
town is epic and massive.
Before we even talk about the upgrade,
which we'll get to at the end, uh, and
for those of you who've watched my
previous videos, um, yeah, well, you
probably already know what's coming when
we get to the archangels. The normal
angel is the fact that it exists is huge
in the town. It's tier five. Um, in
terms of its impact, we multiply its
impact by two because of its mass, and
that adds 80. So, single-handedly
with all of the other things that are
happening in the town, we've increased
the score for the castle by 10 points
from 70 to 80 just from the existence of
this unupgraded tier 7 creature.
Overkill, you say? I don't actually
don't think it is. I really don't.
Remember with the heroes, like they're
competing with each other for your
attention. you can only hire one or two
or three, you know, as as you go through
the game in the first couple of weeks
and maybe you end up getting to eight
heroes by the end. Um, similarly with
the creatures, you can't always buy all
of them. You can't always buy all them.
You got to pick where your money goes.
So, the fact that these guys exist is
massive for me. Okay, we'll save the
archangels for the end. We'll work our
way around. Now, um, this icon here is
intended to represent the, well, the
content of the mage guild in the sense
that
mage guilds, every single faction in the
game, you have to build like the
blacksmith, you've got to build your
mage guild. You got no choice on your
way up. But not all mage guilds are
created equal. This mage guild can only
get in the castle town up to tier four,
right? which means that there are other
mage guilds in the other factions that
offer you more upside and give you more
back for for your money. The fact that
they can get to tier five, this can only
get to tier four. The other thing I want
to be mindful of is what is banned in
the mage guilds and all of the good
towns. Curse is banned, bloodlust is
banned, and you can't get Armageddon.
You probably can't roll fire magic on
your heroes either, although I'm not
going to go and look that up. Um,
and that's a bit of a bummer. Curse is
just I always find curse to be a really
difficult spell to get hold of um when
I'm playing the game. And part of the
reason is that yeah, these good mage
guilds um won't allow it to be um
written down or taught in its halls. In
the halls of the mage guild, you cannot
learn how to curse people.
How much do I care? How much does it
influence things? I'm saying that it has
a massive two uh in terms of its impact
on the long-term longevity of the
campaign. You can't the fact you can't
get a fifth level spell. You can't learn
fly or dimension door or water elemental
if you're a water mage. How much do I
care?
How much does that is that going to
dictate things? I don't I mean I'm not
going to give the tier five mage guilds
like a gold star. I just want to give
some sort of nod to the fact that some
mage guilds add more to the game than
others. So I think the castle's mage
guild is just kind of dithering and okay
compared to the other mage guilds in the
other factions.
So, it's a score of four. And we're on
now to the
unique buildings uh that the castle has
that really nobody else has at all. I
think I talked before about the absence
of the lighthouse. Not talking about
that because it's just not uh relevant.
That hurts castle because of the fact
that it's being designed into the game
is something that the player can do. It
hurts castle in my rankings because I
can never build the lighthouse. Anyway,
we're on to the drum roll stables. Okay.
on the adventure map. The stables is an
adventure building that you can come
across that adds how much movement to
your hero? Let's just find out quickly.
Yeah, it's plus 400 moves. So, basically
on grass that means you can move four
extra hex's uh say from left to right on
grass that day or the equivalent of if
you're on a road that gets harved, etc.
In H Hall of the Abyss, that does
actually get nerfed down to 300, but
we'll come to that later. Now, I'm
sorry, movement in this game is
absolutely king. Okay, in the artifacts
tier list, I spoke for like 15 minutes
about the boots of speed, the
equestrian's gloves. Uh, movement is
everything. If you have that 400 extra
movement, that basically grows whatever
virtue you already have by 400. If
you've got 1500 movement points, they've
become 1900. Your hero is now 1915s
more effective at being who they are,
whatever it is that they're doing,
blessing, hasting, ballistering. If
you're Christian, you're going to be
doing that stuff 19 out of 15 times more
than everybody else. That means that by
the end of the turn, you will have
pancra
four um four out of 19, whatever. And
that gets pancaked onto your next move
and the next day and the next day and
the next day. So movement is absolutely
king in this game. The stables is a
fantastic adventure map object that
every faction wants to immediately
gallop over and visit.
So you can build one in your own town,
which is ridiculous. Every faction has
unique buildings. This is
the best one one of the best. It's It's
going to be We're going to be hard
placed to find a better uh a better
unique building uh in any of the
factions. It is absolutely gold standard
gold class stables. And because it
weighs two, that's another 10 points for
castle. All right, the next building off
the rank is the Brotherhood of the
Sword. It's an upgrade to your tavern,
and when you build it, it gives plus two
morale to everyone on the whole map. No,
it gives it it gives everyone plus two
morale uh when defending a siege. Now,
that's actually kind of nice. It's kind
kind of good to be able to get that um
if you are defending a siege, if you've
left your pikeman home, maybe you've
left your monks and zealots at home. Um
giving them plus two morale, sure,
great. But it'll often be the case that,
you know, you're probably defending with
a character who has leadership. There
could be angels in your army. Uh, all
all creatures of the same alignment kind
of thing. You might already have quite
high leadership for your defenders
anyway. And I kind of have this thing
with sieges where if you're defending a
siege and it's a close call,
it might matter. It might matter. How
much does its presence in the build
order help the excitement factor of the
castle? How much does it change the
destiny of the castle? You might not be
defending a siege in in your campaign.
The big fights might be happening in
other towns or out on the adventure map.
Plus two morale during a siege. That's
the fact it exists is nice, but I don't
care enough. So, I'm going to be quite
mean to this one actually. compared to
the stables. [laughter]
I'm actually gonna give it nil pua.
Um, giving it one would add two to the
score, but I just don't think it's quite
worth that. Doesn't do enough. It's
cheap. It's a It doesn't cost much to
build the thing, but I just I just don't
care that it exists that much. The next
cab off the rank is the resource silos.
Some factions have resource silos and
some don't. So, I thought it was
important that we do include uh the
silos as we go as well.
Um, yeah, I already waxed on about the
griffins. Oh, I've got to talk about one
of the Oh no, I I will get to that in
Horn of the Abyss. Okay, sorry. Resource
silo. Resource silo. Um, you can spend
five grand to build a silo. It's
actually in quite it's it's represented
in a nice nice large icon here. And the
silo will fill with some precious
resource. Okay. um during the course of
the campaign each and every day if you
can find the five grand which if you're
short on crystal and you're desperate
for crystal or sulfur is really really
important. Unfortunately though this
particular resource silo only buffs wood
and ore.e.e.e.e.e.e.e.e.e.e do you get
both? Yeah, it's plus one wood and plus
one ore. The problem is right for me
wood and ore on my runroughs are just
never scarce enough. By the time I've
got five grand, I've got wood and ore
solved. If it's a water map, you're out
on the water getting flatsom and jets
and stuff and getting free wood that
way. Um there's just piles of ore and
stuff lying around. And so having a
resource silo that gives you wood and
ore, I'm almost never ever building it
except in the very late game when I've
got literally nothing to do with my
money. So it's a zero for this
particular resource silo. Sadly,
we come now to the Grail building. This
is the Colossus. And I won't go over the
Grail. I'm sure most of you watching
know what the Grail is, how it works,
what it means, and so on. The when you
build a Grail structure, you get the
standard uh bonuses, which is a 5 grand
buff to your daily income, as well as a
50% growth uh buff to all of your towns
throughout the entire land, which is a
completely fantastic, backbreaking,
preposterous boon to be granted if you
manage to build the Grail building. What
I'm ranking here isn't that, right?
because all the towns have access to
that particular outcome. What I'm
ranking here is the extra buff you get
from being the castle when you build the
colossus. And that buff is that all of
your heroes throughout the land gain
plus two to plus two to morale while
fighting. So they do the Brotherhood of
the Sword thing except across the entire
map.
Right? I'm going to be controversial
here and say that this kind of stinks.
The reason being, if you are the castle
and you've built your castle up and
you've got portals of glory with
archangels descending and you choose to
build the colossus here, chances are
half of your heroes are already at plus
three or even more luck. If you've got
expert leadership and then the badge of
courage or a couple of other morale uh
trinkets, you might be at plus five
morale already [snorts] and that stops
mattering. Plus three morale is is as
high as you can go before it stops
mattering. What you can do with plus six
morale is start having mixed alignments
in your army and doing things like that.
Big deal, big whoop. It sort of matters.
Your clerics might benefit from the plus
two morale. Sure, if they don't have
leadership, but actually a better use
for the colossus if you're if you're a I
don't know, let's pick a faction
stronghold.
You could be the stronghold uh and
decide that you'd quite like all of your
neutral morale uh brawling troops
throughout the land to get plus two
morale. You could build the colossus
here and give them that. I can't
remember what the um
uh what the the stronghold um grail
building does. It might be better. So
that might be a bad example. Um
but yeah, uh maybe fortress would be
another example where they have the big
carnivorous plant uh which I don't think
does huge things for you. Maybe you'd
prefer to have cluster morale. It might
be better off being built by a different
faction than the castle. If you're the
castle, how excited am I to have the
plus two morale from the Grail? Not I'm
not talking about how exciting the Grail
itself is, which is obviously top tier.
Like it would be way way up here, right?
But I'd just be putting these up here
for all of the factions, which wouldn't
make any sense. I'm only talking about
the marginal benefit you get from the
plus two morale. I think that doesn't
matter. I don't think it's useless, but
I don't think it matters enough. So,
it's a pretty poor poor score for the
Colossus. So, we'll add two to the score
for that.
And finally, we come to the most
controversial creature on the channel,
the Archangel, which I've been invited
to reconsider so many times uh following
the publication of the first creatures
tier list, where I gave the Archangels a
B ranking, right? and I was invited by
the community to reconsider, some uh
more politely than others, pointing out
uh difference of opinion uh on on what
that ranking should be. The reason I
gave the archangels a B to reprise uh
that argument in the in the creatures
tier list is that I'm quite happy with
the basic angel for a long time
throughout the random map that I'm
playing.
Getting to that second upgraded portal
of glory is another whole 10 of
everything and 20 grand. And then I've
got to start paying five grand per guy
with three gems per guy, I think it is.
And that's really expensive. Now, no one
is arguing that they are preposterously
strong on the battlefield with the
resurrection ability and all the rest of
it. But if I'm playing a random
scenario, I don't always go all the way
to archangels, right? They're not always
something that I'm definitely going off
to go and do at the expense of
everything else. I'll often be quite
happy with my basic angels uh to
leverage those in combat out on the
adventure map um rather than getting two
archangels. Now, if it's a very very
long game or if it's a very very big
map, there's no doubt that they're
fantastic. I mean, you're going to pour
all your money into them and you're
going to be extremely happy. But in the
round, uh they came away from that S
tier uh by dent of the fact that they
are just so expensive.
So with that expense in mind, how the
existence of the archangel, right? I
can't put them too far down obviously,
right? I'll be I will be uh destroyed by
the community if I do that. I think I am
happy to give them that silver medal. It
will still be a very very heavy um
impact on the overall
um score for that reason. But I'm going
to stay true to myself and true to my
guns. stuff that I've said before that
has played out over the years. The last
couple of years I've been playing when
I've played the castle, it's still true
for me. Um, so I'm sticking to my guns.
I'm not putting them in the very top
tippy top, but I'll give them a silver.
Um, for that reason, by the way, as I
said at the time, my B ranking, B is
still a pretty solid score in that
creatures tier list. Maybe they should
have been a uh maybe I'm being I was
trying to be too um contrarian in that
in that in that in that initial um
scoring. I don't know. But I think
silver, I'm happy enough to to grant
them that for the purposes of this
series. Okay. And so that's the most
controversial creature in the entire uh
game in terms of this channel out of the
way. Um and hopefully you aren't all so
mad with me that you won't watch the
rampart and the rest of them. I'm going
to give them a solid silver.
And that means we're multiplying that
four by a waiting of three. uh uniquely
the tier seven upgraded creature is so
important, so impactful. I'm saying uh
in your uh games over the long run uh
that it deserves that little bit more
waiting. Now, not not millions more.
Like I'm not giving it a waiting of 10
uh or anything like that. It's just a
little bit more uh important what this
creature is than what the say these
these other creatures are or what the
individual uh lower tier creatures are.
That means we're adding 4 * 3 is 12 for
a final score of 108.
Let me just absolutely triple check that
I haven't carried the one incorrectly.
Yeah, so it's 108. Uh I just quickly
checked that. Right now for those of you
who are interested in the horn of the
abyss, we are going to be making uh some
movements on the scales up and down to
reflect the
changes that are made in the horn of the
abyss. The first thing I'm going to do,
I happen to have her graphic here
actually, which I'd pasted in for the um
purpose of things. In Horn of the Abyss,
they add an extra knight in. Her name is
Beatus and she has like various skills
and stuff. I've decided what I'm going
to do is not add new heroes onto the
scales because all Beatric would be
doing is taking someone else's place. So
I think it makes better sense to say
when we're comparing the castle to like
when we come to say do the ramp art
which is next.
We
you know like we're basically saying
each each hero has a weight of one and
there are 16 of them.
You would need to kind of take put her
on there and then multiply everybody's
contribution by 16 17s to make it even.
The reason being that you don't hire 16
heroes when you play the game.
[laughter] You've got to choose. You You
choose your hero. You You take them or
leave them as they show up in your
tavern. So, for that reason, she's being
left out along with uh the other stuff I
talked about before, the shipyard and
the graph uh the griffin uh bastion
horde dwellings are also being left out.
Okay. So, the main changes that Haunt of
the Abyss makes to the castle really
relate to the impact uh on the heroes.
The creatures themselves don't change
much. There's one small tweak uh that
they did make to the internal uh
evaluation of a of a monk, I think it
is. Uh monks, yeah, have an internal uh
AI value that's been re reassigned.
There's no other changes. Obviously,
they also changed some of the graphics.
They changed the pikeman and halbaders
and stuff. Uh but that won't affect
this. Uh the key changes that they
really made are in relation to the
creature buffing knights. Um, and then
the impact of the other specialtities.
So, if we go into uh let's just check
Orin here. He has all the 5% buffs from
creature uh buffs uh increased from 5%
to 20% in version 1.81 of Hotar. So,
that's going to affect. Let's think
about who that affects that it
technically it does affect Ingam. It
affects Tyrus, right? We'll come to
whether we care in a second. It affects
this dude Edric. It affects Allesca.
Um, now Loinus and Adila are both going
to cast their spells with more
proficiency under the Horn of the Abyss
than in vanilla. Uh, let me show you how
and why. This is all quite recent, by
the way, in in in the most recent
version of Horn of the Abyss. Um, a
dealer
goes from a 3% buff to her bless per
level to a 10% buff,
which is which is a massive massive
improvement. Uh, and will really really
be be felt, right? And, uh, I'm sure
it'll be true. I I can't I probably
don't have time to check absolutely
everything here. Loinus. Um
similarly he goes uh he has increased
effect for level three uh creatures
level two my one five creatures.
Yeah. Yeah. Basically his prayer does
more for more people more quickly in the
in in the horn of the abyss. So right
all of these people I've highlighted
here uh improve. Do they improve enough?
I don't think these two heroes are going
to improve enough to come off this
bottom rung because I don't care about
the same with Sorcerer. She's not She's
never going to make it off tier two.
Does Edric get a bit better?
Edric's griffins are now much more
powerful.
Maybe I might be tempted to move Edric
up uh for Horn of the Abyss
to maybe I'll leave I'll I'll leave the
graphics maybe at the vanilla for when
we come back. But basically, I'm saying
Edric adds one. He gets a promotion.
Allesa probably gets a plus one maybe.
Yeah, I think Loinness and a dealer
don't jump to gold as a result of that
buff.
Um, and that's about I I I was there
thinking, oh man, there will be tons of
Horn of the Abyss things I need to do
because of all the changes, but not
really. It doesn't move the It doesn't
move the scale level of the affected
heroes for me. Not really. Oh, hang on.
What about Rion? Yeah. No, no, no. Rion
gets way better. First aid is fantastic
now. So, he's he's actually going to
teleport an entire even though he's at
the bottom of this trade, he he can move
up definitely to bronze now because f
first aid is a massively buffed skill in
Horn of the Abyss. It's a really really
strong skill now.
Uh yeah, so these two gentlemen here are
moving up in the world and as a result,
the Horn of the Abyss score for the
castle will be 110. And with that, I am
willing to, I think, declare completion
of the castle scoring for the castle
faction. Please stay tuned for the
second video in the series where we will
be looking at the ramp part. So, if
you're still with me, that's been a long
video, but it's been cathartic. It's
been great, as all of these always are.
Uh there's a massive uh personal uh
advantage for me that I take away from
getting all of this off my chest. And
I've been so grateful to have your
company with me uh as I go. And I hope
if I've piqu your interest, you'll tune
in for the other factions as well. Uh
and until then, uh I'll say bye for now.
