Head Coach Kevin Stefanski Week 2 Media Availability | Monday, September 14th | Press Conference
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Head Coach Kevin Stefanski opened the press conference by addressing significant injury updates and reflecting on the team's performance in Week 1. He confirmed that linebacker Deshawn Hand will require surgery for a quad injury and is expected to miss the rest of the season, expressing disappointment but emphasizing the need to move forward with confidence in the remaining roster. Additionally, he noted that safety Chris Lindstöm is currently in concussion protocol, with further updates to follow throughout the week. Stefanski acknowledged the frustration of losing on the road but highlighted a critical lesson learned regarding turnover margin, observing that every team that lost their turnover differential also lost the game. He stressed that winning is not just about quarterback play but involves every player taking care of the ball and creating turnovers through defensive and special teams efforts, identifying these "little things" as areas requiring immediate improvement.
The discussion then shifted to specific on-field evaluations, particularly focusing on running back Jaylen Rush and the offensive line's ability to sustain drives. Stefanski credited the opposing team for forcing some errors but emphasized that the coaching staff is constantly looking for ways to help players succeed through easier completions and better run blocking. He pointed out several missed opportunities in the first quarter, such as failing to convert on third downs and moving back due to holding penalties, which reduced the number of possessions the offense had. The coach reiterated that staying on the field is essential for generating more scoring opportunities and that the team must learn from these mistakes before facing their next division opponent at home. He also addressed the status of quarterback Anthony Richardson, stating there were no new updates on his health or timeline for return, as the decision would be made after reviewing today's progress.
Defensive end Zack Klein was praised for his impressive impact despite playing only 16 snaps in a limited role, with Stefanski noting his high ratio of sacks and tackles for loss relative to his participation. The coach explained that Klein's usage was part of an acclimation process as he returns from injury, but expressed pride in his preparation and ability to affect the quarterback immediately. On the special teams front, Stefanski reaffirmed his total faith and trust in kicker Nick Folk, dismissing concerns about recent field goal misses by highlighting that at least one was a short attempt and expressing confidence that Folk will deliver when needed. He made it clear that while he has no intention of making immediate changes to the kicking unit, persistent issues would eventually warrant re-evaluation, but for now, he remains committed to giving Folk every chance to succeed.
Finally, Stefanski addressed the emotional weight of losing Deshawn Hand, acknowledging him as a "tough dude" and a vital presence both on and off the field. He admitted that replacing such a player is never easy but expressed strong confidence in the depth of the linebacker room and the ability of other players to step up during this challenging time. The conversation also touched on rookie Tre'von Moehrig, who made his professional debut against the Steelers; while there is plenty for him to improve upon as he adjusts to the speed of the NFL, the coach was glad to see him play and build momentum for the future. Overall, the press conference concluded with a message of resilience, focusing on learning from Week 1's shortcomings, trusting the current roster, and preparing to bounce back stronger against their next opponent.

Okay. Uh, and I'll give you injury
updates to start. Deshawn Hand has a
quad injury that will require surgery.
He's expected to be out for the season.
Uh, Chris Lindstöm is in concussion
protocol. I'll have an update as the
week goes on there. Obviously
disappointed for, uh, Deshawn. Um, you
know, just been a great addition to this
team on and off the field. So, we we'll
work through that uh over the next few
days. Um, you know, looking at the game,
uh, obviously frustrating to go on the
road and and not play well enough to
win, but, uh, just some of those things
that we talk about going into those
games, that's going to, uh, it's going
to be hard to win if you're minus in the
turnover margin. And I think if you look
around the league, I think it's true
that everybody who won the turnover
margin this week won the game and
everybody who lost the turnover margin
lost the game. So, it's not as simple as
that. Of course, there are times that
you can win a game with um being minus
in the turnover margin, but it's just
all the little things. And that's that's
not just a quarterback stat, obviously.
That's everybody. That's how we take
care of the ball. Uh all those who touch
it, and that's how we take the ball away
uh for our defense and our special
teams. So, we can be better there. It's
a it's a point of emphasis for us. We'll
continue to work very hard in that
department. And then just, you know,
week one, a lot of little things, a lot
of little things that we can improve and
and a lot of those little things add up
to the big thing. And uh again, why why
you don't come away with a victory there
is a bunch of little things that add up
and and we have to be better. We will be
better. So today, big day for our
football team to learn from those things
and have our coaches spend time with our
players and point out those things and
and then, you know, come back better for
it uh and then move on to, you know, a
division opponent at our place. So um
excited about our opportunity that we
have in front of us, but also want to
make sure that we learn from the one uh
from yesterday. So that'll take with
that I'll take any questions.
>> That's fine. He just may not be right.
>> We'll start with Daniel Flick.
>> Hey Kevin, how are you?
>> Hey Daniel.
>> Uh [snorts] h having watched the tape
now. Um how did you evaluate how Rush
played yesterday and and um when I'd
asked you that after the game, you said
there were things you felt like you guys
could have done maybe to help him more
or you wanted to check to see if there
were um along those lines. How much more
could you guys have helped him?
>> Yeah, I mean that's Well, first part is
uh like I mentioned to you guys, Cooper,
you know, battled. Obviously, you want
the the turnovers back. Um you have to
give credit to to the Steelers as well
on those plays. So, uh those are things
that we can learn from. All of us can
learn from those plays. And then, you
know, talking about helping, I think
that's our job as coaches. We want to
help all of our guys, whether you're
playing quarterback, uh or any position
on our team. So, uh, ways to give you
easy completions, ways to run the
football, ways to, uh, you know, score
points any which way. So, that's a
constant, uh, thing that we're looking
at. But, um, you know, that's not new.
That's not unique to that game at all.
We just there's things that we feel like
we can do better. And, and that's what,
uh, again, like I mentioned, those are
the conversations that we have today
that we we can be better as coaches, we
can be better as players, and and let's
let's learn from this one.
Do you have any any clarity on how the
QB spot will look this week healthwise
with anybody?
>> I don't have any updates on that today.
Daniel,
>> coach, do you know the timeline for that
decision? I mean, do you expected it to
be by Wednesday or could it last all the
way through the week until we get to
Friday and Saturday?
>> Yeah, we'll see. Mark, I really don't
have an update yet. I need to get
through uh today before we can really
make that determination.
What else did you see from the offense
specifically that was, you know, that
stood out as the the biggest area for
improvement, particularly at the
quarterback position?
>> Well, yeah, I think it's easy easy to
highlight the quarterback position, but
I would tell you just we have to stay on
the field and uh got into some dis, you
know, not not great at not great down
and distances for our def for our
offense to convert a couple times there.
Got, you know, moved back with some
holding penalties. We had a third and
one that we didn't get. Uh we we had a
third and one and a half two that we
didn't get. So those are all little
things that um that we feel like we can
be better. Uh and just staying on the
field gives you more turns, gives you
more opportunities, and I think there's
ways that we need to uh we need to stay
on the field as a football team.
>> Thanks, coach.
>> Zack Klein.
>> Hey, Kev. Apologies for driving here.
Um, with the guys being off tomorrow,
did you talk to Michael today and ask
him if he's ready that when you guys
come back to practice on Wednesday, he's
good to go and can lead his first team?
>> Is Georgia a hands-free state? Do we
know?
>> Yes,
>> it is. Okay,
>> I don't want to be recorded
in this.
>> Uh, thanks.
>> Really, it goes to the first part that I
just mentioned. I don't have an update.
Uh I I'll obviously hope to have more
clarity on on on all of our positions
via uh you know just injuries and
whatnot but later today next few days.
So I don't have an update.
>> Eric, thank you.
>> Drive safe,
>> Daniel.
>> Yeah, I was uh reviewing snap count this
morning. I saw that Z only played like
16 snaps, but he had two sacks. I think
three tackles for loss, a couple
quarterback hits. Um, one was the the
snap count just part of his, you know,
process of trying to acclimate him. Um,
and and two, what impressed you about
how he played?
>> Yeah, pretty good ratio. One out of
eight snaps. But, uh, yeah, definitely a
plan to acclimate Z. Uh, and, you know,
he's just coming back to getting back
into practice, getting back into, you
know, football shape, quote unquote. Uh,
proud of how he's gotten himself ready,
proud of the impact that he has on this
football team every single day. Uh
obviously his ability to affect the
quarterback is is a huge deal and the
hope is to continue to bring him along.
>> Mark, you had something else?
>> Yeah, coach, obviously the kicking game
wasn't what you wanted. Uh obviously had
an impact in the game. Uh not that you'd
make a change this soon, but how do you
evaluate that? And you know, uh as that
goes along, at what point do you get to
a point where you have to say we might
need to start re-evaluating the position
if it persists?
>> Yeah, Nick's a pro. I have total faith
and trust in Nick. Uh obviously he wants
to come through for the football team.
You know, wasn't like those were uh you
know, short field goals, at least the
first one. So uh he will be better. He
will come through for this football
team.
>> Yeah, I got one more if you got time for
it. Um
>> I got all the Daniel.
>> Oh, I love that, Kevin. Thank you so
much. Um, when we talked to Nate Ali
back in the spring, he called Deshawn
Ham like kingpin or whatever just
because of how important you guys viewed
him and just trying to be a run defender
without him. What's your confidence
level in the the, you know, room around
him and um how how hard is it to lose a
guy like that? Yeah, like I mentioned,
hard because of the person he is and and
the I'm serious, just the what he brings
to this building on a day-to-day basis
and and uh that's what I appreciate
about him in the first place is just the
guy he is. Doesn't hurt that he's from
Philly. Um but just a tough tough dude.
Now, um to the second part, yeah,
injuries are a part of this game that
nobody likes and and guys have to step
up. So, we'll look at different things
that we can do, but feel really
confident in the guys that we have
currently in that room and in our
building that uh we feel like can can
make an impact. But it's never easy when
you lose somebody like Dehan.
>> And then, you know, Trice hadn't played
in a pro game um at all prior to
yesterday. How did he play in your eyes
and just kind of how cool is it to be
able to see him play considering that he
he's experienced a lot the last two
years here? Yeah, good to finally get
Brillin out there and I think good for
him and uh like any first time out
there, he's not not a rookie, but for
all intents and purposes, he is. So,
it's there's plenty to improve upon. Um
but but glad that he was out there and
we can build off of that.
