We're out in one of the big catastrophic
wildfires that have occurred in our
territory. This one is called the
Garrison Lake fire and it impacted
severely the landscape here is of high
value to our community for a number of
reasons.
So we've been working with BCTS to see
these sites come back in a good way.
>> It's not just about people and about
economics. This place probably held a
lot of elk, moose, deer and everything
we do out here, you know, is a
reflection of what was here and what is
here now.
So now we're working with BCTS and
Gorman's and other entities to do
restoration.
>> Today, as a group, we came together as a
relationship [music] building activity
to replant native plants on the
landscape. We don't usually do native
plants [music] in typical stocking
standards. That's why we're here today
and why it's different.
>> With all the impacts from climate and
[music] industry, impacts to water, the
community is so tied to the land, to the
water, to the wildlife, their spiritual
[music] and cultural values are embedded
in the land and in these ecosystems.
>> High-intensity wildfires actually causes
the soil [music] to be hydrophobic. Soil
logging actually helps with the
hydrophobicity in the soil.
So when you're turning up the [music]
soil, you're exposing new soil
underneath and you're exposing that
really slick layer you get after a fire.
>> [music]
>> And so the regen has a really hard time
establishing itself in that slick
environment. So harvesting
>> [music]
>> and removing timber and then replanting,
that disturbance activity on the
landscape actually allows the forest to
come back. Whereas sometimes they just
become a dead forest and nothing [music]
is progressive after that point.
Working with USIB on this, their former
counselor, [music] Mike Allison, in one
of our meetings said that huckleberry on
the landscape is dying and we need
huckleberry back in our land. And I'm
really happy to see there's actually
quite a bit of natural huckleberry
regenerating out here, but we've also
planted quite a bit of huckleberry. I
think we did 100 plants today.
Things like that, input from community
and then also input [music] from the
nursery as to what we should put out
here and relying on our partnerships in
that sense because they are out on the
land and they [music] do know what they
use and what they want for their plant
medicines and their food. We were able
to replant native plants, so it allows
the native plants to regenerate a little
bit faster as well [music] and that
common stewardship is why it's so
important and why this partnership works
so well.
>> The value to the community is immense
cuz these plants have medicinal [music]
value, they have food source value.
Pretty unique
and very different, but very special I
[music] guess in the sense to the
community that
we would start doing things like this
too.
