God Wasn't Pleased With What Jesus Did. He Was Pleased With Who He Was.
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The core message of this conversation centers on the profound distinction between a person's value based on their actions versus their value based on their identity in Christ. The speakers argue that modern society often reduces individuals to their productivity, gifts, or roles, creating a transactional dynamic where worth is earned through performance. In contrast, they emphasize that God's perspective is entirely different; He looks at believers not for what they do, but for who they are as His sons and daughters. This truth is illustrated by the life of Jesus, who spent thirty years doing nothing significant in terms of ministry before heaven declared Him well-pleased. Even when tempted to prove His divinity through miracles, Jesus refused because His identity was already secure, demonstrating that true security comes from knowing one's relationship with God rather than seeking validation through works.
This theological principle is presented as a necessary antidote for people struggling with feelings of irrelevance or the pressure to constantly prove their worth. The dialogue highlights how common it is for individuals, whether pastors, parents, or laypeople, to feel they must "elbow their way in" or achieve greatness to be loved or valued. However, the speakers suggest that such striving leads to a futile cycle where everything feels like a fleeting vapor. Instead of chasing relevance through status or applause, believers are called to embrace humility and serve from a place of secure identity. The example of Jesus washing His disciples' feet is cited as the ultimate model, showing that those who know their true standing in God are willing to be at the bottom of the hierarchy rather than seeking positions of power or prestige.
To practically apply this mindset, the speakers recommend turning to Philippians 4 and praying for grace to recognize and release any unhealthy ambitions that violate God's ways. They encourage listeners to allow God to search their hearts, acknowledging human frailty while trusting that weakness becomes a vessel for Christ's strength. The conversation includes a humorous yet humbling anecdote about the speaker being mistakenly referred to as "Rabbit Volk" in church communications, which served as a reminder that his name and reputation meant nothing compared to his role as God's servant. Ultimately, the video concludes with an invitation for everyone to shift their focus from serving a church or people to serving the Lord directly, finding true fulfillment in the assurance that whether one is on a stage or changing diapers, they are equally significant to God because of their identity as His child.

>> So yeah, Radiant Podcast here at Rise
Shine Conference, but I'm sitting down
with Scott Volk, and you're a man of
many talents, and you have you're on the
leadership team of the Spirit and Truth
Network, and you've you do a lot of
different things, but we don't want to
talk about any of those things. We don't
want to talk about what the Lord's put
on your heart with sonship and identity.
>> I I love that, Sean, and I I just got to
say this starting off that one of the
greatest privileges of my life, now that
I'm 61 years old Oh, [screaming] come
on. Is it knowing me? Uh it is
>> [laughter]
>> knowing Yes.
And And as I'm holding the tears back in
my [laughter] eyes, oh Lord, help me not
get too emotional.
>> Yeah.
Um it is knowing you.
And it's knowing uh Radiant uh
the Radiant Church
and Radiant Network were unknown to me 5
years ago.
>> Yeah. And now it it it holds such a
special place in my heart and in my
life.
>> Yeah. And [music] in for my children
who've been affected by Pastor Lee and
Jane and the whole Radiant
Listen, when you have a son Yeah.
>> who desires to spend the first part of
the year in a prayer room at Radiant
Church, you know Radiant Church is doing
something. And I I absolutely love that.
So Radiant has Radiant has been just
this beautiful
infusion into the life of the Volk
family. So so thankful for it. But dude,
one thing that that's really been on my
heart and I believe it's so important
for young people
for middle-aged people, for pastors, for
lay people is the issue of identity.
>> Yeah. Oh, bro, yeah. We're We're living
in a society where you're appreciated,
sadly, only for what you do and and what
you bring. Oh, man, you
>> Your gifts and your works. Yeah.
>> and your works. I mean, if we could get
Shawn on our staff
>> Yeah. and then you're you're known as
the podcast guy or the sound guy or the
MC guy or the right-hand guy or or the
preacher. Yeah. But when God looks at
us, bro,
none of that none of that is there.
>> It's kind of a bizarre thing. So, here's
here's just the one scripture that I
I don't know how long
if this is 3 minutes or 20. I don't I
don't know.
>> Yeah, whatever you want. Yeah.
>> Okay, but listen, [laughter] listen.
When heaven opened up, Jesus was 30
years old.
>> Yeah.
And he had done
in the grand scheme of things
ministerially Nothing. Yeah.
>> [laughter]
>> Like Yeah. No healings, which had to be
kind of crazy for him because, you know,
if he was 2 years old and there was a
person with cancer, he could have blown
on them.
>> And but so he he actually he lived with
that for 30 years doing nothing and
nothing
of significance naturally.
>> Yeah.
Heaven opens up at his baptism and God
says
"This is my son
in whom I'm well pleased."
>> Yeah. Kind of an amazing
>> did Oh, that's interesting. What did
>> That was just an affirmation from
heaven. [laughter]
Yeah.
We'll see how long that goes for. Yeah.
Uh yeah, no, like literally Jesus did
nothing and and it was I am pleased in
him.
>> I'm pleased. And so it's it's
interesting. Everybody around him heard
it.
>> Yeah.
And then what's the next thing that
happens? He's led the The Bible says
he's led by the spirit into the
wilderness.
>> Yeah. And he's tempted by the devil and
in all three temptations, you know what
the devil says?
"If you are the son of God,
prove it."
>> Yeah. "Turn this bread into stone, you
know, bow down and I'll give you this,
jump off the pinnacle of the temple."
Jesus had an opportunity to prove his
sonship by doing something, you know.
>> He could have turned the stone into
bread. Listen, Shawn, I mean, if I was
Jesus, I would have said, "I'll show
you, devil."
Poof, you know, stone becomes bread. But
he didn't do it. Why?
Because he was secure in his sonship
with God with with the Father.
The And And I believe, bro, we're living
in a we're living in a generation
where young people especially
they have to
you know, what can I what can I do?
Exactly.
>> way, young people is anybody under 61.
>> [laughter]
>> As stated.
What can I do?
>> Yeah.
To show my pastor I'm valuable.
To show my parents I'm Do you know my
kids don't have to do anything to to to
gain my love? I don't care if they're a
drummer or a podcaster.
Yeah. All I care about is they're my
kids. Yeah. That's how God sees us.
>> Yeah. Yeah. And
it kind of bums me out
that there's so much transactional
relationship in church today.
One of the things I I dream about, even
where the Radiant Network is concerned,
is that we're raising up we're seeing
young people raised up not because
they're gifted, but because they're sons
and daughters of God.
>> Yeah. Which is the gift.
>> Yeah.
>> Right?
>> Yeah.
>> It And so, bro, I'm just I'm living in a
season I'm I'm 61.
The older I get
the less relevant I'm just being like
raw the less relevant I feel.
>> Yeah. Like How does a
>> It's real. It's real. How does a How
does a 30-year-old person look at a
61-year-old versus like uh
He's He's 61. Yeah. But
>> then even I'm 37 and I'm like it's it's
just it's just a difference. Like I I'm
like, wait, am I relevant anymore? Like
you got all these young 20-year-olds up
and coming. Have I Like it's So wherever
you're at it's just a sliding scale.
>> sliding scale. It's really really the
truth. But we can be thankful that our
identity to God has zero
to do with what we're gifted in
>> Yeah. and 100% to do with the fact that
we're his sons
>> Yeah. and we're his we're his daughters.
We're We're not his daughters. Yes. If
you're a There are daughters.
>> are daughters. There are daughters.
[laughter]
And I thank God I'm not one of them.
But anyway, bro, I I I feel like that's
just that's it that's super important.
Because we're just going to spin our
wheels
>> Yes.
to try to
elbow our way in
>> Yeah. to green rooms Yeah.
>> or or or or to get on stage
>> Yeah.
And those things are fleeting and in a
moment and they It's like literally it's
it's that uh Ecclesiastes everything's
hevel. And it's like it's everything's
just like a vapor you It's like you you
try to grab it and it's just there one
and then it's gone the next.
>> It's amazing. But I mean think think of
the verse in Philippians, I think it's
chapter 4. Let this mind be in you
>> Yeah. which was also in Christ in Christ
in the Messiah.
>> Yeah.
He didn't count equality with God
something to be grasped.
>> He
emptied himself
>> Yeah. became as a servant.
>> Yeah. I tell you what, if in the eyes of
man you want to be impressive, don't be
a servant. [laughter]
Yeah, exactly.
>> guy at Be at the top Be at the guy at
the top of the food chain.
>> Yeah. But because Jesus was secure in
his sonship Yeah.
>> willing to be the guy at the bottom.
I've not come to be served, but to
serve. Or having dinner with his
disciples when
>> Yeah. his feet should be washed by every
honking one of them. He gets down and
washes the feet of even the one who's
about to betray him.
>> Yeah. You know why? Because he knew from
whence he came he was God's son. I I'm
I'm asking for more and more of that.
Yeah.
>> And uh
I don't know, dude. I You always love
being recognized. You always love Oh,
man. Yeah.
>> I listened to your podcast or I heard
you speaking. You know You know that it
it kind of
it boosts me up.
>> Yeah. And and and that's okay.
>> Mhm.
But I don't I don't want to glory in
that.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> to glory in the fact that hey, God chose
Shawn, God chose Scott to be his boys.
Yeah. And whether we're on stage or
whether we're mopping a bathroom,
>> Yeah. they're equally as significant to
God.
>> so good.
>> Yeah. What what would you say like to
the cuz you you mentioned in the very
beginning like this this applies to the
pastor, the non-pastor, the the the
stay-at-home mom, the the whatever it
is. Like it applies to everybody. Um
someone who's like oh, like if they're
listening to it right now, I think I'm
that touched something. I think I'm
struggling with that, but I don't know
where to like what's like one step that
you would tell them like hey, start here
if you feel like you're it struggling
with this.
>> Yeah, I would well, I would start with
reading Philippians 4.
>> Yeah. And and that's that's Jesus
himself.
>> Yeah. Um and start It says, "Let this
mind be in you." In other words, if you
want it, it's available if you let it.
>> Yeah. That but that
Jesus, he was all God and all man. It it
it doesn't come to us that easily.
Therefore, it's a crucifying
of our flesh. The first thing I do is I
I wouldn't beat myself or ourselves up
over the fact that we have a little bit
of that in us. That's our human nature.
>> Yeah. And I would the first thing I
would do is I would say, "Lord, give me
grace to see Yes.
>> any any unhealthy ambition that I have,
>> so good.
>> any human ambition that violates Yeah.
>> your way of doing things,
reveal it to me."
>> Yeah, and he will. And he will.
[laughter] Well, what what is what
search me? Yes, search me and know me.
Yeah.
>> Try me and know my thoughts. See if
there is any wicked way in me and lead
me in the way of everlasting. We can't
be led in the right way unless we give
God permission to search us. And when he
searches, dude, I mean, you don't win a
hide-and-seek game with the Lord, no
matter where you're hiding. He'll If you
give him permission,
his searches always come out, you know.
Come out
No.
And it's really beautiful.
I'm not I'm not a pro Excuse me. Cuz I'm
burping on your podcast. 61
Here's the deal.
God knows our weaknesses, and he knows
our frailty.
But there's a reason why the Bible says
the weak become strong, right? We don't
glory in our strength.
We glory
There's glory in our weakness because
then Christ is raised up. So, the more
we can get low, the more And for those
who you refer to who might say, "Oh,
there's some of that inside of me." All
you have to do
All you have to do is
allow God and
You know what happens to me all the
time? People forget my name.
>> [laughter]
>> Did I
Do you know the rabbit story? Okay, I'm
going to tell you the rabbit story.
Okay, here's the rabbit story.
Um and then off camera, I'll tell you
everything else.
But I once went to speak at a church.
And the week before I got there, a
friend was at that church.
And it said, "Next week,
Rabbi Volk is coming."
>> [laughter]
>> And I'm I'm not I'm not a rabbi. I'm not
a rabbi.
But halfway Halfway
Well, DUDE,
>> [laughter]
>> YOU YOU YOU GOT TO CUT THIS OUT OF THE
PODCAST. Oh my gosh. OH MY GOSH. OKAY,
I'M GOING to tell YOU THE STORY.
[laughter]
>> [laughter]
>> BUT THIS WAS THIS WAS PERFECT FOR ME. IT
WAS perfect for me. Halfway through the
week, I get a letter
from the amazing assistant to the pastor
here.
And it said, "Dear Rabbit Volk."
>> [laughter]
>> And I look at it It was obviously a
typo. It was obviously a typo. And I was
like, "Okay, I'm not going to tell her
it said Rabbit." I I just You can call
me Scott. I'm not I'm not I'm not Just
call me Scott. Well, flowers came You
know, Radiant is such an amazing,
generous church that on Sunday flowers
were delivered to my wife, Beth.
>> [laughter]
>> And those flowers came.
And it said, "Dear Beth, thanks for
letting the rabbit come [laughter]
and speak."
Bro, it was absolutely perfect. But
here's the deal.
>> That's a humbling moment.
>> It's It's It's humbling, but it's
beautiful. I love it. Many times my name
gets messed up. You know, speak for
churches that still have bulletins. I
was at a church with a bulletin not all
that recent not all that far away, and
it said, you know, "Today's speaker,
Steve Volk."
>> [laughter]
>> I've gotten off of planes, people
holding signs, Scott Bork, b o r k. In
Korea, I guess Bork and Volk is the same
thing. [laughter]
Scott Bork.
But what it does for me
is it it just helps me to realize my My
name is nothing.
We're here to represent God to the
earth. Whether we're standing in front
of 10,000 people or whether we're
flipping burgers, whether we're a mother
changing diapers or the head of the
largest women's ministry in the world,
God looks at us all the same. And it's
not
>> We're just like a bunch of kids. We're
just a bunch of kids. And um that's
That's really, really cool.
>> That's so good.
>> So for the one who's saying, you know,
"What can I do?"
I would I would just say, "Let Let's
pray. Lord, give me grace Yeah. be like
Jesus, to get low. Yeah. That that when
I'm changing a diaper Yeah. whether I'm
driving a bus I'm doing this for you.
Whatever you do, do it heartily as unto
the Lord and not to man.
>> And I'm telling you
in all seriousness, the more my name is
forgotten
it goes against my flesh, but it it
blesses me.
It blesses me cuz God's helping me.
>> [laughter]
>> He's like, Scott, you need this. You
need this. Everyone saw he says it
wrong. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. And dude,
let me let me just say this about you
and whether this stays in the podcast or
not
but but you you inspire me. Oh. Because
you've got your your full of gifts and I
know it.
But your heart isn't
I I see you serving and that just it's a
blessing to me. It's just a real real
it's a blessing to me. So thank you for
demonstrating that and um
and it it
it it's it's loud and clear and and I
just I I believe the Lord wants to
encourage you, encourage me, encourage
all of us that we're we're we're not
serving a church. We're serving the
Lord.
>> the Lord, man.
>> And and that's really where we we're
totally completely fulfilled.
>> Come on, man. That's that's so cool.
Thanks so much for sharing all that. Oh
my gosh, thank you so much. I was asking
you like, what do you want to talk
about? And it was just like, I have this
thing inside of me burning and so it's
like I thank you so much. If if anybody
wants to reach out to me, it's rabbit at
scottvolk.com.
>> [laughter]
>> Honestly, you should buy that website. I
should if I get more more traffic. Oh my
gosh. Hey, listen, dude. I'm I'm not
sure if that would be good to stay in
this. I'll leave that
to I'm totally keeping that in it.
>> [laughter]
>> Wait, was that our church?
I remember all of that.
>> Check with Lee. I don't want him Is he
>> He's He's not going to listen to this.
He's not going to listen? [laughter]
Dude, it's one of my favorite stories
cuz I tell it. Yeah. I don't
I've told it maybe publicly two or three
times, but everybody's dying. I never
say radio show.
>> Never, but now
>> Now we're going [laughter] to. I'm going
to own that one. So, bro, thanks so
much, man. Oh my gosh. Thank you. Thank
you.
Sean, I I love you, dude.
