Video summary
The Mathematics Section at ICTP is dedicated to conducting profound research into fundamental mathematical concepts while actively fostering extensive collaborations with mathematicians from developing nations. The institute's current research agenda spans a wide array of disciplines, including algebraic geometry, differential geometry, dynamical systems, number theory, harmonic analysis, and mathematical physics. In recent years, the scope has expanded to incorporate emerging fields such as machine learning applied to mathematics, ensuring that the section remains at the forefront of both traditional and innovative areas within the field.
This research mission is pursued through a dual approach involving intensive activities in Trieste alongside numerous initiatives organized globally within developing countries. As an institute rooted in theoretical physics, ICTP offers a uniquely stimulating environment for mathematicians, blending high-level academic rigor with international engagement. The organization aims to build upon its long-standing tradition of excellence in fundamental mathematics and seeks to significantly broaden the impact of this expertise on the scientific communities across the developing world.
Solid training and hands-on research experience in these core areas are presented as essential prerequisites for entering the broader realm of science, encompassing both pure theory and practical applications. By establishing deep partnerships and providing robust educational frameworks, ICTP strives to empower researchers from diverse backgrounds to contribute meaningfully to global scientific progress. Ultimately, the section's efforts focus on creating a sustainable ecosystem where fundamental mathematical inquiry thrives and serves as a catalyst for advancement in science worldwide.

The aim of the mathematics section at
ICTP is to carry out the deepest
possible research in fundamental
mathematics and in doing that we want to
establish the largest possible
collaborations with mathematicians from
the developing world.
The main themes of research at present
at ICTP in mathematics focus on
algebraic geometry, differential [music]
geometry, dynamical systems, number
theory, harmonic analysis, mathematical
physics and more recently we are opening
up to new lines such as machine learning
in mathematics. And we do that both at
with our research activities in Trieste
and with a lot of activities organized
in the developing world.
ICTP environment as an institute of
theoretical physics is particularly
exciting for a mathematician both for
the activities we run in Trieste and the
ones outside.
Mathematics at ICTP has a long tradition
of excellence in research on fundamental
topics in math
and we would like to consolidate this
tradition and to expand its impact on
the developing world.
Solid training and research [music]
experience in fundamental mathematics is
the key to enter the whole world of
science pure and applied.
