From 2 Years of Knee Pain to Walking Again | Shalmoli’s Journey | Manipal Hospital Dhakuria
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Shalmoli Bhattacharya, a US citizen who has been suffering from severe knee pain for over two years, shares her inspiring journey of seeking medical help in India after initially avoiding surgery in the United States. Upon arriving in Dhakuria on October 21st, 2025, her condition worsened while visiting relatives, prompting her to consult Dr. Rajiv Basu at Manipal Hospital. Unlike previous experiences where she felt pressured, Dr. Basu adopted a patient and cooperative approach, offering her the choice to proceed with surgery locally or wait without forcing her hand. This respectful demeanor helped Shalmoli overcome her nervousness and gain the confidence needed to decide against traveling back to the US for the procedure, ultimately choosing to undergo the operation in India on March 26th.
The medical team at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria provided comprehensive care that extended beyond the operating room, ensuring Shalmoli felt supported and valued throughout her treatment. Diagnostic investigations, including an MRI scan, revealed a tear in the meniscus of her right knee, which was successfully repaired through arthroscopy. The hospital staff took the time to thoroughly explain the diagnosis and treatment plan to both Shalmoli and her family, who are also from the US. This clear communication and the kindness displayed by the entire team created an environment where Shalmoli felt safe and cared for at home, allowing her to focus entirely on her recovery without the usual anxieties associated with medical procedures abroad.
Shalmoli's rapid recovery was remarkable, as she was able to walk again just one week after her surgery, a milestone that restored her confidence and normalcy in daily life. The timing of her treatment proved fortunate, as delays caused by flight restrictions due to the conflict in the Middle East inadvertently allowed her to complete her full rehabilitation before needing to return home. Now walking pain-free, she has been advised to continue follow-ups with orthopedic surgeons in the United States once travel conditions improve. Her experience highlights not only the technical expertise of Dr. Basu but also the holistic support system that made a significant difference in her life.
In conclusion, Shalmoli's story serves as a powerful testament to the effectiveness of Manipal Hospital Dhakuria's orthopedic services and the compassionate care provided by its staff. She expresses profound gratitude for the technical skills of Dr. Basu and the kindness of the entire team, which transformed her from a frightened patient into someone who regained her normal life quickly. Her decision to trust the doctors in India rather than facing surgery in the US has resulted in a complete recovery, and she enthusiastically recommends the hospital to others seeking similar treatments. This journey underscores how a supportive medical environment can alleviate fear and accelerate healing, turning a two-year struggle into a success story of resilience and medical excellence.

Um my name is um Shal Mulli Batara and
um I came actually I'm a US citizen and
u I came here on October 21st 2025. I've
been suffering for more than 2 years.
Uh originally I was supposed to get my
surgery done in US but like I always
avoided surgery and uh so somehow I
managed to come across Manipal because
one of the doctors had recommended me
about uh Dr. Rajiv Basu
and uh so I came for a followup with him
Dr. Baku and he appeared to be very
cooperative with me. He never forced me.
He just made a comment saying if I
wanted I could get my surgery done here
or I can hold off.
And those very words made me feel that
he's not being pushy and u I was always
nervous but somehow I found confidence
with the doctor
and uh so instead of getting my surgery
done in US I decided to get it done over
here and on March 26th
of this year I got my surgery done
and um I really I have no words to
express my gratitude to the doctor
because it was like after a week I was
able to walk a little bit and gain back
that confidence and I'm so thankful to
him not only him the whole team over
here because of their assistance their
kindness their like you know their
gratitude
um which actually made me feel like okay
I'm getting
uh something done at home.
>> Namaskar. I am Dr. Rajiv Basu consultant
orthopedic and arthoscopy surgeon at
Manipal Hospital Dhakura.
I had seen this patient Miss Shalmuli
Bhachara who by nationality is an US
citizen. She came to me in the
outpatients clinic with a persistent
knee pain which she has been suffering
in the US for the past few years. Uh she
had seen some surgeons uh in the US who
had advised surgery and investigations
for the diagnosis of the problem and
while she was visiting her relatives
here the pain increased in the knee and
uh she sought medical help at our
Manipal Dhakura unit. So she underwent
an arthoscopy meniscus repair of the
right knee uh last month and we were
told that she was due to travel back to
the US once the flight situation
improved due to the war in the Middle
East. So she was delayed here in this
city and this actually helped us to
complete her surgery and her full
recovery. She was investigated here with
an MR scan which revealed a tear in her
meniscus or the cushion of the knee
joint and she was fully counseledled and
her family who are also from the US were
fully explained about the diagnosis and
the treatment plan. She underwent the
surgery in the month of April and she's
came for few subsequent follow-ups and
we are very pleased that she has now
made a complete recovery and she's
walking normally pain-free and she has
been advised to actually follow up her
treatment with her ordic surgeons in the
United States
>> and during the day of surgery while
entering the room my heart just dropped
like I was very very nervous and I
didn't know what I'm supposed to do.
But then when I came out, I felt like
I'm not a patient but just a person who
was like who has gained back in the
normal life
and
I I really have nothing much to say but
because of Dr. boss's technical skills
and because of being in good hands, I
was able to recover
ASAP and I would recommend everybody
about it. Thank you.
