David Moyes has addressed the media ahead of Everton's crucial Premier League opener against Crystal Palace at Hill Dickinson Stadium, acknowledging that while the match will be challenging, it remains a winnable fixture for the Toffees. A significant portion of his pre-match press conference focused on the persistent search for a new right-back, a topic that has caused frustration among fans throughout the summer transfer window. Moyes clarified that he is not alone in seeking a specialist for this position, noting that while there are many players available generally, finding one who fits their specific needs has proven difficult. He admitted that although they have identified several candidates and made bids, the squad is currently down to just Sheamus Coleman in that role compared to last year, creating a genuine need to improve the quality at the back before the season begins. The manager also provided an important injury update, revealing that Christian Nørgaard will not be fit for the opening game, while Jimmy Garner is returning from hernia surgery but may not be ready in time. Tim Rabouma was ruled out due to a hamstring strain, leaving the team with limited options at right-back and midfield depending on who starts. Moyes expressed hope that having Nørgaard and Garner available would provide more tactical flexibility, but emphasized that the current squad has enough depth to compete. He specifically highlighted Aiden Hackney, who is set to make his Premier League debut tomorrow after an impressive preseason, cautioning against expecting too much too soon from players coming up through the Championship ranks. The manager suggested a potential lineup involving Merlin Rolfe at right-back with Hackney in midfield, though he left open the possibility of other combinations if the team feels they are being overrun in the center of the park. Beyond the immediate match preparations, Everton confirmed that James Tarkowski has been appointed as the new club captain, taking over the armband from Sheamus Coleman following his departure after 17 years. Tarkowski, who has made 159 appearances and scored six goals for the club, described becoming captain as his proudest moment and an honor to wear the shirt. His appointment is seen as a sensible decision given his durability and consistent availability over recent seasons, though he will face stiff competition from Jake O'Brien who is pushing hard to maintain his place in the squad. Additionally, the video noted that Guela Doué remains Everton's top target for the right-back position, with the club tracking the Strasbourg defender who is valued between 35 and 40 million euros after a strong season where he scored two goals and provided seven assists. The broadcast concluded with updates on other upcoming fixtures and charitable initiatives, including the Under-21s' mini derby against Liverpool at Goodison Park which serves as the first game of the season for the youth team. Viewers were also informed about a special donation offer benefiting the 1878 Trust, where purchasing a Budweiser between 12:00 and 1:45 PM during the Crystal Palace match would see half of the price donated directly to the charity. This promotional period extends inside the stadium from 1:00 PM until quarter to two, offering fans a competitive price on their pint while supporting a good cause. The segment ended with reminders for viewers to check out the full match preview and subscribe to the channel for more Everton news as the new Premier League season gets underway.

David Moyes has given his pre-match press conference ahead of the new Premier League season which begins at Hill Dickinson Stadium tomorrow against Crystal Palace. It's a it's going to be a tough one for Everton, but a game Everton can win. There's no doubt about that. But David Moyes was asked about the ongoing search for a right back. It's a hot topic amongst Evertonians. We obviously asked Angus Cana about that earlier this week, but it was the manager's opportunity to be uh asked a question about it. This is what he had to say. >> Well, I think there might be five or six managers before me who was trying to bring a right back as well. So, uh I'm not the only one. Uh it sounds strange. It sounds as if you would find right backs 10 a penny, but uh that isn't the case when you when you're looking. Look, we've identified quite a few right backs we like. We've bid for quite a few we like. So, we're we're right in there. We're working to try and get one. >> Is it a position which really really needs to be filled? >> Uh well, I think we've got other people who are doing quite well. Jacob Ryan who has done well for us there. Other people have filled in. You know, we still got Craig Patterson. We've got Merlin Ro who's done well in preseason playing there at different times. Jimmy Gardner played really well at right back for us. So, uh, it's not as if we've not got MD to do the job, but, uh, it's certainly a position we're missing because from our squad compared to last year, we're a player down just to Sheamus on his own. Uh, you know, that that takes our numbers down. So, we're we're still a little bit down on numbers. So, we've certainly got room to to bring in a new right back. >> There you go. There you go. Listen, people are really really frustrated and annoyed that Everton haven't sort of got to uh the solution for this yet. If Everton end up with I guess the number one or number two choice on the list then fair enough. But it's still going to it's still being you know a real bone of contention with Evertonians all summer. David Moyes saying there about, you know, they want a certain player, they want player who's better than what's in the club. And I understand that you want to try and improve the quality in that position. But it still is frustrating, isn't it, when you're about to kick the new season off and you haven't addressed what is your number one priority. Hopefully that is addressed in the next 11 days before the window shuts. And hopefully it is with a uh one of the top sort of targets because that almost makes the weight palatable almost not fully. Uh the manager gave an injury update tomorrow. Well for the game tomorrow we didn't give it tomorrow we give it today for tomorrow. Uh this is what he had to say. >> Uh I think it'll be it'll be a difficult opening because we don't have Christian Norgard fit yet. Jimmy Gardner's obviously returning from from a hernier operation. Uh Tim Rabumas had a had a a doctor strain which uh he won't make it tomorrow. Uh so I've just got to hope that we we have enough to get through at the moment with >> Yeah. I mean listen it' be it'd be advantageous going into this game with Christian Norard available, James Garner available in the squad as well obviously to give the the manager even more options. But we've still got you know four midfield players who will be in the squad. It depends obviously on where where me and roll starts. If melon roll starts at right back then the midfield three picks itself doesn't it? Hayden Hackne Harris Armstrong Ken and Jbury Hall. If Ro doesn't and Jake O'Brien starts at right back then Merlin Ro becomes an option in midfield. And I think a lot of people have have sort of listened to what the manager said um today in the press conference and have tried to work out what he was hinting at and maybe the manager was sort of putting some sort of um you know putting things out there that were throwing people off the scent. But we'll wait and see. But obviously we need those players available as soon as possible. I can't wait to see Jimmy Gardner know if he's if he's better than James Garner. It'll be really interesting. Um Aiden Hackne is in line to make his Everton Premier League debut tomorrow. Middlesbrough's player of the year and indeed the EFL player of the year is signed this summer. He's been quite impressive in preseason. David Moyes was asked about Hayden Hackne. This what he had to say. >> I hope so. But my history would have been that the boys who've come from the championship have taken a bit of time to get in the side and work through it. uh from Jolian to Banzy and Phil Jagua and Tim Cahills and all the other ones. Some of them have been right in the team and done well and others took took time to become those Premier League players and and to be fair a lot of them went on to become full England internationals and that's what I hope for Hayden. I hope that we can develop Hayden in a way where he goes on to to get to that level. But uh I just don't want people expecting too much too soon from him and uh I don't want to put too much pressure on him. I want him to be given the same opportunities and the chances as those boys did back then where they they took a bit to develop. Watched watched the football for a we bit from the sidelines before they they really broke into the team. >> There you go. And I was sort of hinting at that when I was talking about the injuries, wasn't I? Is that Hayden Hackne has been I think he's been quite good preseason. It's not the Premier League, of course, so you have to take that with sort of, you know, caveat that. But um I don't know whether the manager was sort of hinting he'll start on the bench there which would indicate Merlin roller be midfield which would mean Jake O'Brien at right back but who knows he was asked later on in the press conference about Marilyn rolling said he's done really well and he's played well at right back and who knows he could play there you know on a regular basis if needed sort of thing which then led to people being really worried that he was saying Merlin Ro is the right back for the season which I don't think he I think he was just saying he's done a decent job at right back. So that's going to be that's going to be the interesting thing tomorrow and probably that and maybe it's whether it's Tyreek George or Brennan Johnson gets the nod to start. They're probably the two positions going into the game where people are sort of looking with interest to see who the manager goes for. Um, but I think it's me personally I go for Merlin Roller right back and have Hackne Dion Armstrong in the middle. He can always change it if he feels like the midfield's being overrun a little bit or whatever. He could always move roll into midfield. No, Brian at right back. I know he's done that before or god forbid Patterson at right back, you know, and play a right back at right back. But we'll see. We'll see. Like I said before, I feel as though Evan have got more than enough to be Crystal Palace tomorrow. Um, got to go and do it. All that matters is the three points. Everton have today confirmed that James Tarovski is the new club captain. He takes over from Sheamus Coleman who left the football club after 17 years in the summer. Tarovski has made 159 appearances for Everton and scored six goals so far. He's for me been a brilliant signing from Burnley. Came in on a three and his four Premier League seasons. He's made ever present in his first two seasons. 3838 33. In his third season, he was online in line again to do the same. He's in line to break a record till he got an injury against Manchester City. Uh and then last season, he played 37 times as well. So, he is durable, available most games. Um said it was his proudest moment becoming Everton captain. Said it's an honor to wear the shirt anyway. It's always an honor to wear the armband, but it's a proudest moment to take over from Sheamus Coleman. So, wish him well. He's him and J Brandweight have got a good partnership. I think he's going to have to look over his shoulder a bit this season. I think Jake O'Brien is definitely going to be pushing him hard and it's up to him to keep his levels up otherwise he could find himself out the team, but he is the club captain. Um, and I think, you know, it's a sensible decision. And I think think the other the other ones maybe the manager could have looked at although he he sort of said there was no other choice really for him would have been someone like Kane and Jbury Hall or maybe James Garner but it is James Tarakovski so good luck to him ever again today being linked with a move for Strasborg right back gua du he appears to be the club's number one choice for there he's a very very highly rated player played at the world cup he's valued by Strasborg between 35 and 40 million euro. Evan have been tracking them all summer. He played 34 times last season for Strasborg. Scored two goals and registered seven assists. The mini derby is taking place tonight at Gooderson Park. It's the under21's first game of the season, kicking it off with a game against Liverpool. So, should be an interesting one that can get off to an excellent start by beating their Miy rivals. And I should have said this before when talking about the Crystal Palace game buffer tomorrow. Just an update um to the sort of the donation that's going to go to the 1878s. If you are on the the plaza between 12 and 1 p.m. and you buy a Budweiser, the price of £450, 50 p of that will go to directly to the 1878. That offer then carries on inside the stadium from 1:00 till quarter to 2. So if you buy a pint of blood in the stadium but from after 1:00 till quarter to 2 it's £450 a pint which is really competitive around the area 50 p of that goes to the 1878. So if you're going to have you know a little tipple at the match and you fancy a budweiser then if you do it in those hours you get it for a good price and the 1878 benefit from it. That's it for the news daily. Make sure you check out peds starting 11 that's back. Check out the match preview as well. If you haven't done that, hit the subscribe button. Like if you haven't.
