Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
On August 14, 2026, a joint task force from the Central Joint Operations Committee (CJOC), supported by the Drug Enforcement Commission, launched an intelligence-led operation at a residence in Kabulonga following reports of activities threatening national security. The raid was triggered by intelligence gathered after the recovery of 7.3 million kwacha during a previous operation in Lusaka and involved monitoring that had begun as early as November 2023. Upon arrival, the team encountered gunfire and resistance from unknown individuals, prompting them to return fire. During the exchange, one unidentified male was fatally wounded; although initially rushed to a hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Social media reports subsequently identified the deceased as Mr. Mpatowe Kafwaya, a former Zambian minister, after his family confirmed the identity of the body.
The operation resulted in the apprehension of eleven suspects at the premises, including three ex-commandos with approximately two decades of experience in army special forces. These individuals possessed specialized skills in sniping, hijacking, assassination, and survival tactics, presenting a significant national security risk due to their connections to hostile groupings. The group also included two retired police officers trained in weapon handling and fieldcraft, one of whom had served with the Flying Squad C5. All eleven suspects are currently held in connection with alleged offenses related to treason and other crimes that may be uncovered during ongoing investigations. Authorities emphasized that those not connected to the allegations would be released, while all detainees will be afforded their constitutional and legal rights throughout the process.
A comprehensive search of the premises yielded a substantial amount of restricted military equipment and electronic devices secured for forensic examination. Among the recovered items were high-grade automatic Uzi weapons, five AK-47 rifles with ammunition, a Zastava pistol, bulletproof vests, commando daggers, and various maintenance tools. The task force also seized tactical gear such as night-vision binoculars, prisms, tasers, walkie-talkies, and digital video recorders, alongside numerous electronic devices containing communications and documents relevant to the case. These materials are being analyzed to determine ownership, source, intended use, and their connection to the alleged treasonous activities.
The defense and security wings have assured the public that the operation was conducted professionally, impartially, and strictly in the interest of national security. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information regarding the raid or the identities of those involved. The eleven apprehended individuals, whose names and ages were released by the committee, will continue to be held as investigations proceed to establish the full scope of the alleged offenses. Further updates are expected as the forensic examinations and legal proceedings advance, with a commitment to dealing with all suspects in accordance with the law.
