Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Nearly thirty years after its establishment, the Fond St. Jacques Credit Cooperative Society Limited has continued to invest in initiatives that extend well beyond traditional financial services. On Wednesday, the organization hosted its 2026 Dominique Prosper Scholarship Program and educational bursaries to assist students as they prepare for the new academic year. These efforts highlight the society's dedication to recognizing the sacrifices families make to support their children's education while reaffirming a commitment to building a brighter future for the entire community. Errol Alexander, President of the credit union's board, emphasized that this ongoing investment reflects their vision of being the preferred financial institution for members by providing quality services, education, and support.
The scholarship program, now in its second year, honors Dominique Prosper, the founding father of the cooperative society who served the community for almost three decades. During the event, Prosper addressed the young recipients directly, framing the award not merely as a reward but as a significant responsibility. He explained that receiving the scholarship is akin to being given a key that opens doors, noting that how those doors are used depends entirely on the students themselves rather than the donors. Prosper stressed that true education goes beyond textbooks and exams; it involves discovering one's identity, understanding personal values, and learning how to make a meaningful difference in the world.
Among this year's beneficiaries is Senessa Alphonse, who received the 2026 Dominique Prosper Scholarship following her CPEA examinations. Alphonse expressed deep honor and gratitude for the award, stating that it will provide crucial additional support as she continues her studies. She noted that the kindness shown to her will make the next five years of her education easier and encourage her to work hard and strive for excellence. Her reaction underscores the tangible impact these financial aids have on students' ability to pursue their academic goals without undue burden.
The presentation of these scholarships coincides with a significant milestone for the Fond St. Jacques Credit Cooperative Society, which is set to mark three decades of service on October 17th. As the institution approaches this anniversary, it also faces the reality that its current leadership and structure are transitioning, with new entities expected to replace them soon. Despite these changes, the society remains focused on giving back to the community by developing the educational standards of members' children. This transition period reinforces their enduring legacy and commitment to ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from a foundation built on financial integrity and educational empowerment.
