Video summary
The video titled "Flock 2025 Welcoming New Voices" focuses on revitalizing the Fedora community in Latin America and other global regions by reconnecting with existing ambassadors and empowering them to rebuild local energy. The speakers describe the current state of these communities as a "sleeping giant" that requires genuine conversations rather than just phone calls to help leaders become highly visible at local open-source events. A key argument presented is that while large-scale events are important, there is an urgent need to start with small, manageable groups and technical sessions in various countries to attract new contributors. The discussion highlights specific challenges such as budget constraints for swag and travel, proposing a streamlined process where teams can request small budgets via tickets in the Minishare repository to fund local hackfests or workshops without needing millions of dollars.
To address the issue of finding new talent, the transcript emphasizes shifting focus toward universities and technical schools rather than high schools, noting that students at this level are often more prepared for engineering careers and less influenced by a curriculum dominated solely by proprietary software like Microsoft products. The speakers share examples of successful initiatives, such as "Fedora School" events in Panama where Linux skills were taught alongside theory, and the importance of mentorship programs to transition students from learners to active stewards. There is also a strong push to diversify the types of contributors sought beyond just engineers, welcoming designers, financial professionals, gamers, and scientists to ensure that open source technology serves a broader range of industries and demographics.
Furthermore, the conversation addresses the lack of Fedora presence at major regional conferences like Nerdala in Argentina or Latam where, despite millions of users, other distributions like Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux dominate the stage. The speakers advocate for increased visibility through booths and participation in global events like PyCon to re-establish a foothold in these markets. Additionally, the video explores alternative funding models, suggesting that organizations can partner with customers—such as banks or tech firms—to secure financial support for STEM education and open-source initiatives. By leveraging customer branding and building relationships with local foundations, communities can create sustainable programs that nurture new voices and ensure the long-term growth of the Fedora ecosystem worldwide.

>> Okay. Uh we're engagaining our Latan
team leader. Our federal Latan community
isn't starting uh from scratch. Uh it's
a sleeping giant. We have dedicated
ambassadors.
We have champion Federa for years. It's
time to reconnect uh reincarnate
and empower them. erh reach out uh
recharge let's have genuine
conversations not just call uh we all
ask uh how can help you rebuild your
local community and energy
uh what support uh do you need to to
make Fedora thriving again in your
country
uh back to the front lines uh uh we will
support our reactive uh leaders in
becoming highly visible at local open
source
and text events events. Imagine Fedoras
uh present at meetat hackathon and
conference across Latin America powered
by familiar face.
>> Yeah. Uh one of these uh things about uh
these topics is about Yeah. in you know
we have the flock all the years um we
have uh a lot of people coming to flock
but some people in other regions not
have the opportunity opportunity to come
to flock because it's expensive it
budget issue whatever what we need in
these regions what we need it's not only
latam it's for all the regions apac um I
don't know latam ma emia
we are trying to find the way not find a
way because it's ready
We need say to all these teams to start
working in a small events a small groups
in these countries to um contri to to
start find new voices. New voices is new
contributors and we are trying to find a
packagers. We're trying to find
translators guys documentation. We have
a lot of roles inside Fedora. This is
what we need currently trying to find in
LATAM. Obviously Luis and me is from
Panama, Panameanians, we are working in
the Latan and we are trying to find this
in in Latam. Latam is Brazil, Argentina,
Costa Rica, Colombia a lot a lot a lot
of countries there. Um obviously
uh the problem start
after before pandemia
uh a lot of people disappear for all the
project and uh the you remember if you
remember in the past we have a big event
as a food call. Okay. And this is why we
need now a small events, a small group
and start add a new people in the in the
in the community because currently we
don't have a lot of people. In the past
we have a hundred hundred hundreds of
people everywhere. Please continue.
>> Okay. Uh connection with future uh text
starts. Uh the next generation of text
talent is in college and universities
eager to make an impact. Uh you need to
be right there with them building strong
uh listing connections.
Uh compass connect. Uh let's get back to
it with one onone engagement at
university and technical school. uh will
introduce Fedora to the bridge minds uh
who are shaping
um tomorrow's technology showing the how
they can contribute and grow.
uh from a student to steward. Uh we are
nur this relationship offering
mentorship resource um pathway uh for
students uh to transition from um
learners to active contributors uh
becoming the next wave to Fedora leaders
>> and I think uh some people ask you know
because some people say you know
sometimes you don't have the budget or
what we need to receive because if you
do a event you need swag, you need the
stickers, you need uh some people want
to motivate to go to this event about
the stickers but it's not a sticker. We
need a technical sessions because I
don't want to receive for example this
sessions in a technical h conference. I
want to receive I don't know uh the new
kernel futures the I want to check what
is the new process for uh create the
specs for create a new package I don't
know Microsoft I see I see Brian talk
about the new Microsoft futures in in
the in the in the envir in the ashure
side obviously I love that sessions
because I am an engineer too but we need
evans to uh find new contributors and we
have the new process. If you need for
example if you need a budget a small
budget to create this event or group
events because you want to pix a
hackfest I don't know in your country
you can do that
ask requesting in the mind in the mines
gitlab repository you can create a
ticket and you can request a budget a
small budget obviously not a million of
dollars a small budget to uh start with
this small events and obviously ly if
you have a big event you need um visit
other city inside your country you can
do that too and you can receive the um
help from the Fedora project side it's
important that part because you know all
the people not have the same
economic economic opportunity in the in
the in the wallet you know and it's
important to say if another project is
going to help you to uh complete
complete this uh these goals, these
events, these things and if you need
help mart team um the new FPL sum
f consil all the team is going to help
you to complete your goals. Please
>> I I think that I I am the the the good
sample because I
know Fedora because I I Um
>> 2011
>> huh
>> on 2011
>> in the university I I know in the
university and I am here I I make
contribution in the package team uh
design team so all because I uh know the
community
>> perfect yeah please continue oh yeah oh
my I think I jump to my side mentoring
and challenging yeah
um I think I talked talk about the
challenge. All the challenge all the
time is one thing is money other thing
is uh uh how you can start to create a
small events. Uh basically um all the
times I suggest I recommend I suggest uh
the idea to start from some universities
because in the past you are a student
and for example in my in in my side is
easy is it for me to talk with the my
university in the past I say hey uh can
I do some conference it's a it's free
conference or a small a small hack
hackfest about uh for the new engineers,
you know, the new engineers want to to
receive this uh technical session or
hackfest or whatever or workshops. Um I
start in that in that way. Uh I don't
start in schools. Uh I think I don't
know university schools for because
these guys don't know what this guy in
the school I think. So if you have other
idea about this please go ahead and say
me that part but the school people the
school guys don't know what is the
future for for in the life you know I
don't know if I I'm going to study
engineer I I am not going a doctor
astronaut I I don't know but engineers
you are going to the engineer
faculty and say hey we are going to give
a free workshop and the people say oh
it's a Linux workshop
is a red hat fedora workshop and the
people know that you can start there
with a small budget you can buy some
pixas you can buy whatever inter I don't
know what do you need to do this this a
small event and small groups in matrix
in ele in matrix in the in the federa
channels you can h join to the federal
ambassador channels to the federa
packaging channels and if you need for
example if I need help from ankor from
the neighbor Federa project. I can ask
to anchor to do a remote session and
talk about the neuro federa project.
In the past obviously you can ask in the
past to say hey ankur can you come to
Panama or come to Brazil or come to
United States to do a you know inside
on-site session. Obviously today the the
money is is is pro is a problem but you
can start doing a remote session remote
workshops if you need a for example
Kevin Fancy hey Kevin can you give me at
sometimes your available time in some in
some weeks to uh give me a
infrastructure workshop uh to talk about
how you automate all the environment
about as you know about the pagure about
the infrastructure of Fedora how this
works etc and you motivate this new
futures engineers
to start you know hey join to the
federal community new voices ambassador
ambassador project is not a it's old
project now we have a advocate we have a
mentee mentor etc but for me the best u
the best uh roles to contribute is
uh the development sites packaging
um infrastructure
translator, documentation
and other things because I think so if
you are going to work in the real life
as an engineer you need to understand
all these things uh and this going to
help you in your future career and I
think that part is important um oh sorry
at this point any question sorry no
oh yeah you are there thank you sir um
um about the
oh [clears throat]
uh
bring back Fedora. I I mentioned this
part Fedora school because in Panama we
have one example in the past. The Fedora
school is not a school. The name of
Fedora School, we we put this name
because in a university in the big
university in Panama, technological
technology university, we create the
Federa school and all the engineers on
Friday, Saturday, you know, we have one
a big issue with the days because
Saturday all the people want to stay in
the home with the family and drink and
some barbecue and you don't want to
continue study but some people come to
the university on Saturday to learn
about Linux
in that Fedora school in the university
I don't mention Fedora I mentioned we
are going to give you uh we are going to
teach you about Linux how works this how
work Linux how you can navigate inside
Linux how to install web servers etc you
know but then this guy say but what
operating system I'm using now you are
using Fedora.
Fedora is this this this this this and I
start I take this way to start broadcast
about Fedora send the all the
information about Fedora project and I
send the wiki hey this is to if you want
to as a work as a packer maintainer if
you want to contribute as a
documentation translator etc please
start there create your fast account you
know that part um works yes worked two
or three
We [snorts] receive a lot of
contribution. We have a lot of Panama
contributors in the in current channels
in LATAM channels. Uh some people are
still there. Some people now is uh not
have a time. It's okay. The time is
other issue. Uh but yes,
we create this and this is not a part of
any Federa project. In the past, we have
a Federal University, Federal Ambassador
University, other things. what I what
I'm trying to to do with this erh
session I want to if you have more ideas
about how to find new voices new
contributors for the projects not for
Latan for any region please share with
the team share with the ambassador team
share in the channels because we are
trying to um continue growing this
community this is a big community it's a
friend community family community. I
feel as a family this community and
[clears throat] we need uh new
contributors, new new voices and we need
u new packagers, documentator,
documentation people, translator. Um
next one we have a I think we have other
one. Yeah.
Um I passed this one. I jump everything.
I think I talk everything. And okay,
this is some examples. Um in Brazil we
have a Latino where is a big big
conference in Brazil. In the past the
Brazil team put uh some stance there. Um
but currently we don't have a lot of
people in Brazil. We have a one channel
in telegram and we have one channel in
in matrix. The Federa Brazil team is
trying to to rebuild to make yeah to
rebuild the the team in Brazil with a
small group. Now we have a 120 guys
there. Obviously Brazil have a lot of
million
users and
engineers in in in Brazil but we have a
100 26 or something in in the channels.
This guy is trying to put a stand in
some small events, large event. And I
mentioned this because we need continue
um maybe we we need continue put a
stance there because it's a big one. We
have a Oh, sorry.
>> That was
>> Yeah, it's okay. H in Latino where all
the Microsoft Red Hat um opens a lot of
people is going there and I think it's a
good idea to continue um uh put the
standards. Nerdiala is in Argentina. The
last year I visit Nerdala with Alma
Linux. Uh I I I work with the Alma Linux
team to talk about Alma Linux in
Neriala. But I don't see any stan about
Fedora is I say oh my god where is
Fedora? I don't see Red Hat there.
I see Rocky Linux. I see Alma Linux. I
Microsoft obviously obviously but I
don't see Fedora there on and Red Hat
too. And I think it's important to check
this event because this Evan Erdala
work in Argentina, Chile, Spain,
Mexico and we don't have presence we
don't have presence there.
>> [snorts]
>> uh fle is fle is in the worldwide I
think it's in latam reions world all the
latam rean fle is a free event all the
years we do uh we do a fle uh to present
a operating system installation uh day
etc about operate any opensource
operating system it works in the ino and
pyon I think pyon is worldwide event
correct yeah in pyon currently we are
working in Costa Rica and we We have
some guys working in Panama doing a
great job about Pyon.
This is my suggestion. We need presence
in some I this is my example but I know
you know more events big events but we
need more presence in this sites uh
because we need to find new voices new
contributor new contributors
um in the worldwide.
The next one um continue mentors small
groups small events international video
uh I don't agree with that but sometimes
work because we need we are currently
working in uh I I know in federal we
have one team working in podcast in
videos etc. I think we need to continue
doing that because some people want like
YouTube or to to learn. Um that's all
for me. I think Luis, do you have
anything else to check or
>> No, for now the only mention is the for
example the international video.
>> Yeah, we mention it because the new
generations
consume videos or reals is uh fast
content.
>> Okay.
>> This is the reason for I mention it but
it's all
>> I think. Thank you.
>> Thank you for your presence in this
session.
>> Thank you team. I mean
[laughter]
any I think we don't have any question
any question team?
Oh
>> silence.
Oh
um is there um do you have like a
contact within Fedora or Red Hat that
you can ask for funding?
>> Yes, we we have a we have a pro you say
for funding correct?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Yeah. In the mines share really
fast the answer. In the mineshare
repository we have the process to
request reimbursement to request budget
a small budget. If the budget is a small
for example $150 you can request really
fast and if you have if you use a wise
platform PayPal or if you use any of
these it's really fast to receive this.
Obviously you need create a ticket and I
think sometimes the people don't want to
create the ticket but the ticket is
important to uh compliance things you
know red hat need uh wow need a report
about this and it's important to create
this tickets and to request your uh
reimbursement or request a budget and
put the name of the event or what you
are going to do pix whatever put
everything there the details that's all
mare repository
So how is that information advertised?
Like I have no idea where where to get
that. For example, you said mind share.
>> You know what? Let me send uh it's a
good thing. Next time we need to put the
the links. Uh let me give you all the
URLs to about the repositories and you
can broadcast to your any group uh to
create these tickets. Okay. It's uh it's
really uh it's easy way to it's one link
and documentation. You can you can send
this to all the groups in in your
country.
I think so. Ready?
>> I going to give you my contact and lose
contact.
>> So like maybe advertise it on something
like the release party. You could maybe
>> Yes. For release party, let me you know
I have we have a you have in the you are
in the matrix channels.
>> Okay. Let me do a broadcast with Justin
to send all this information. It's
important I think
uh
>> I have a question but maybe I'll ask you
after
>> No no no no it's okay it's okay uh the
other speaker is not yeah
>> okay so uh I have a question uh if I got
you correctly uh you mentioned that uh
regarding schools you are focused to uh
to universities uh because high schools
are not specialized etc etc am I correct
Yeah, but this problem oh let me say
this problem is all in latam I am not
sure how inia or other regions works
because the high school in latam the
people is not secure what he for example
I the last year in my high school I
don't know I am going to take engineer I
no doctor no I am going to work as a
designer you know the people don't know
what is the the next way but we take the
we take universities because the people
is ready in in in the in the in the
career in the in the engineer techni
technology tech technological career and
yeah the people is ready there and we
are going to start hey we're going to
talk about Linux infrastructure blah
blah blah all these things
>> okay okay but in
>> one recommendation
>> oh thank you
>> one recommendation regarding that uh
from side uh school is uh bad. Uh of
course that's correct. We have learned
only Microsoft software. [clears throat]
>> Yeah. [laughter]
>> But anyways at university that's the
point where you should start because
where you need the stuff and if you
practice it in parallel to your theory
uh you are a really good pre uh prepared
afterwards and you can bring the people
into the community then. And that's how
I did that. I started directly in the
first semester with a Linux installation
parties then introduction to command
into the command line and using that all
and how to automate stuff and that was
really good for our students. I can say
>> not it's really a good suggestion.
>> I actually kind of disagree with that
>> because we started actually introducing
especially to girls technology. Yeah.
>> And I think like hearing it as early as
possible in a very
>> I would say teenager friendly way
>> actually will enable projects like
Fedora and like whatever else is out
there from an open source community
>> to create awareness because they've
heard it before.
>> Okay.
>> So and there are many kind of like
events if I look at like in in Germany
what's the one
Girls Day is one thing because I I
organized it and we did mechanical
engineering because it was approachable,
but they also understood like what is
open source and we held a a presentation
and compared it to playground and
amusement park to see like hey just
imagine like for every ride you need
someone who checks the security and that
is like someone who does quality
engineering and all these bits and
pieces. And this analogies actually do
help to kids and teenagers to understand
not just it but also like understand
open source
>> technology technology open source open
source technology
>> opensource in particular and a lot of
them actually are very curious about how
can they get engaged at very early age
so I wouldn't neglect schools
>> agree and other thing to that is I
mentioned in all the in all the session
I mentioned only engineers and it's not
only engineer because I I I know in
other countries we have some friends
financial guy we have a um what is the
financial guy the other one is a
designers we don't need limitate
the technology only for engineers sorry
for say that is my one of my uh I think
I agree with you I mention all this
session engineer
But we have financial guys, we have
designers, we have gamer developers, we
have uh
doctors using node of fedora scientists.
Scientists we yeah I think don't uh
limit the um the technology and open
source technology for engineers. Yeah,
sorry for say that it's my my one of my
error in this session. But yes the what
do we need? We need new contributors,
new voices, any any
role. If you are a financial guy, if you
are a designer guy, it's okay. You are
welcome to the project. Now it's I
corrected fix it. [laughter]
>> I'll add some context why I asked the
original question. You know, uh oh, I'm
I'm a bit biased here because I used to
be a teacher and I used to be a teacher
at a technical high school. Yeah. So uh
I was teacher of subjects like uh
programming and operating system
administration and so on and uh so I
tried to introduce my students uh to uh
open source and sure Linux and uh I met
with uh the students who graduated at
this school and not uh every student of
uh that school is expected to continue
to the university but still we met
recently and it was really nice to see
that a lot of them actually is currently
focused uh to Linux. it's their it's
their job. So uh uh I think yeah as it
was said let's let's start let's start
early and uh even now I'm no longer a
teacher. I work for Redhead and uh I
still do like a once a year or twice a
year some talk for high school students.
Yeah. Do some workshop. Yeah. Because I
think yeah really uh if we catch this
early Yeah. we can catch their curiosity
and introduce them to something really
they can use in their professional life
and I think this is might be the way.
>> Yeah, totally agree. I think I think
this this is a good [applause]
I I love this.
Uh anything else to Oh, you have you
have more
>> I just wanted to
>> we don't have more speakers now.
>> No, we have a break afterwards.
>> Okay.
>> Just one more thing. If you seek funding
>> Yeah. connect with customers
>> and build customer branding in relation
to open source and you will have funding
from a customer site and present. That's
what we did and it's an amazing
technique.
>> It's a good good idea. Yeah, it's a good
idea.
>> Oh,
>> any other questions?
[laughter]
>> I don't know if I want to put this on
recorded, but I do have a question. Like
so are you talking about
Red Hat customers you attracted or like
other vendor customers like when you
>> No, I think when you mentioned customer
don't don't focus only in Red Hat
customer.
>> No, I'm asking because you did it I I
have questions [laughter] like like what
customers were you able I don't know if
you can say it but
>> I can. Okay. So we did it with uh
financial customers like two banks and
uh Deutsche Berza and we approached them
in regards so I partnered with a
marketing um person and said like hey
can we do something for kids especially
girls and get them into STEM
>> but I think it would work with any kind
of customers because all
like all companies face exactly the same
challenges. is and I believe that they
lack the support from knowledgeable
people such as like we have in this
community to actually build these kind
of programs and there's plenty of
opportunities to exactly do that. So if
you have connections or if you advertise
it I'm pretty sure you will find people
who are interested and then the other
way is vice versa. I think Fedora also
is looking always for people who could
support that. [laughter]
>> I mean it's it's a real question.
>> It is
enough for that.
>> Yes. Because I believe at least the
conversation I had they always struggle
to find competent people to support
these kind of things.
uh uh Louis mentioned u uh some
students in go to the technology uh
university in Panama but the but the but
the master the the in what is instru the
prof uh don't don't teach in the don't
teach these students in the correct way
don't show don't show the tools don't
show the open source show everything but
not the open source side and maybe this
is one of the goals for the for Luis for
all the contributors is and you
mentioned customers
all the years in Panama we do a
hackathon with a big customer and in
this event we integrate all these people
all these student in technology open
source Linux
cloud etc and these guys take a correct
ways to join to continue in the
university and join to uh companies,
foundations etc. I understand what what
you are saying. We are trying to do that
sometimes because you know it's is that
part is you receive funding using uh
some customer to help you to uh help
students to grow and that part is
important. I understand that part and we
have one foundation in Panama for
technology for technology open source
only
what is the name of the foundation
>> found
panameia system lies open source so li
open source open source it's the name of
the foundation and we are working on
that only times to receive a funding and
help students to grow yeah
>> I think we're
Yeah,
>> one more time.
>> Thank you.
[applause]
