FILS vs TSITSIPAS | US Open 2026 | Tennis Talk Preview
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The upcoming first-round match at the 2026 US Open features a clash between Arthur Fils and Stefanos Tsitsipas, two players arriving with contrasting momentum and rankings. Tsitsipas enters as the number 53 seed after a season marked by a mixed record of 26 wins and 19 losses, highlighted by a clay-court victory in Gstaad and a notable hard-court win over Alex de Minaur in Miami. Despite these successes, his form has been inconsistent, including a surprising defeat to Ernaux at Roland Garros, though he remains the underdog facing Fils. In stark contrast, Fils is riding high as the number 11 seed following an impressive comeback from injury and a recent triumph at Cincinnati, where he claimed his first ATP 1000 title by defeating Ben Shelton and later beating de Minaur in the final.
The narrative of this matchup is heavily influenced by their head-to-head history, which has been entirely dominated by Fils, who holds a perfect record of five wins against Tsitsipas. This dominance includes a particularly one-sided victory in Miami earlier this year where Fils allowed only one game to his opponent. The transcript suggests that for Tsitsipas to secure a win, he must start aggressively and avoid falling behind early, as Fils has been playing with exceptional confidence and intensity recently. If the Greek player cannot frustrate Fils from the outset, the Frenchman's current form suggests he will quickly build an insurmountable lead, potentially turning the match into a runaway victory for the favorite.
Looking ahead to the conclusion of the contest, the analysis leans heavily toward Fils maintaining his momentum and capitalizing on his superior recent performance. The commentator predicts that while Tsitsipas might manage to force a tie-break in the final set if he serves well enough to keep the pressure on, it is unlikely to be enough to overcome Fils's current trajectory. The expectation is for Fils to win in straight sets, leveraging his high confidence and the fact that he has been playing exceptionally well throughout the year. Ultimately, the match promises to be an interesting test for Tsitsipas against one of the most in-form players on tour, but the consensus points toward a victory for Arthur Fils in what is expected to be a close three-setter at best.

Arthur Fils vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas, the
blockbuster first round match up over at
the US Open for 2026. Both players are
coming in with different form lines.
Tsitsipas entered the tournament as
number 53 in the world with a 26 win 19
loss season so far. His best result was
actually winning a clay event after
Wimbledon in Gstaad beating Colligon in
the final in three sets. His best win
though came on the hard courts in Miami
where he took out De Minaur who was
number six in the world at the time. His
worst loss was actually at Roland Garros
to Ernaux
who was 104 in the world at the time but
remember Ernaux did go on to make the
semi-finals. His form has been a little
bit all over the place. One win one loss
over the last couple but we'll see how
he goes here being the underdog against
Fils in this first round. Fils entered
the tournament as the number 11 in the
world with a 32 win 10 loss season so
far. His best result actually came last
week when he won Cincinnati, his first
1000 title beating Tiafoe in the final
in a three set up. And his best win also
came that week beating De Minaur who was
number eight in the world at the time in
Cincy. His worst loss actually came in
Rome where he lost to Pellegrino who was
number 155 in the world. His form has
been an amazing not just this week but
in general this year in his comeback
from injury. He's come back so strong
and he's on the verge of top 10 so he's
going to like his chances here. These
guys have actually played five times
before with Fils winning all five
matches which is kind of incredible. You
would have thought that maybe Tsitsipas
would have won earlier in their careers
before Fils sort of has broken out but
Fils has won every single time they've
played including a match this year in
Miami where he only gave Tsitsipas one
game in the match. So Stef's got a lot
of work to do. If Tsitsipas is going to
win this one, he has to win that first
set. He has to get off to a good start
because if he falls behind the way that
Fils has been playing, he's just going
crazy right now and he is just going to
run away with it. So really needs to get
off to a good start and try and
frustrate Fils a little bit as well with
his game. If Fils is going to win this
one, he needs to just keep doing what
he's doing. He is riding high on
confidence this year and after winning
in Cincinnati, he just looks so good.
It's going to be really interesting to
see how he does as well because he does
have the head to head in favor of
himself and he will be the heavy
favorite so let's see how he can deal
with that as well. Interesting match
here, you know, Tsitsipas is up against
it and he's playing one of the most in
form guys right now. I have to go with
Fize in a close three setter. I reckon
we might get a tie break there, but I
think that you know, if Stef serves
well, we might get a tie break. I think
it's going to be Fize so in straight.
He's just playing way too good right
now, but let me know in the comments
below who's going to win this one.
