Falcons QB update, studying the Steelers, & Atlanta's identity | Friday Five Podcast

What's up, Falcons fans? Tory Mlaney here and I'm coming to you now before we get into this episode of the Friday Five because we have some breaking news on our hands and we wanted to give you guys as much information as we possibly could knowing that hey, I'll give you a peek behind the curtain. We actually record our Friday five episode during the practice window on Thursday. Well, this Thursday we had quite a bit of news happen while we were recording. So, I'm going to give that to you now and then I'm going to give you the episode later on so that you can see the full breadth of our highlights of this Pittsburgh versus Falcons matchup. But first, the news of the day. Tua Takavalo was limited in practice with an oblique injury. It was seen during the open period of practice that during individual drills, Tua grabbed at and reached around his lower back, sat down on the field for a minute, little brief, probably a few seconds, popped back up, walked around, but then after that, it come to find out when we talked to Cooper Rush in the locker room after practice that Cooper Rush was the one that took all of the reps with the first team offense on Thursday. That's vitally important because if we go back to Monday and we'll talk about this more in the episode, Kevin Stansky, the organization named Tua Takabaloa, the week one starting quarterback, Michael Penn, not yet at 100% ready to go for full four quarters of NFL work. He t we talked to him also on Monday and he expressed he didn't want to go out and perform when he knew he wasn't at 100%. So Tua Tucka would be the starter. Cooper Rush would be his backup. Now, where we sit today, Tua Tugoa put on the injury report on Thursday, limited again with an oblique injury. That's the official designation. We will know more on Friday and make sure you follow along on at Falcons.com. Make sure you're following along with me, tomhaney on Twitter. I will be bringing you up-to-date information as quickly as possible on Friday when we talk to Kevin Spansky and as game designations come out on Friday as well. I'm Will McFad and that is Tory Mlaney and we are here to finally talk about the regular season. The Falcons will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in week one. We're going to preview all of the action right now. Let's get into it. But Tori, we're going to start this show the way we're going to start every show this season with a two-minute drill. >> Oo. Normally that comes at the end. >> Normally it comes at the end, right? But we're just going to try to jump start this this show. And we're going to kind of put two minutes on the clock. The pressure is going to be on right from the jump. >> And really, we're just going to kind of react and talk about some of the national news that's happened before we get very Falconcentric. So, it's our chance to touch on what everybody's talking about. And I think what everybody's talking about this Thursday as we record is last night's game. The Patriots Seahawks Seahawks kind of squeaked out one in interesting fashion right there at the end. What did you make of that game? >> So I was really toying around with this idea of you're only as good as your depth. And the reason why is because we all saw Sam Darnold goes down very early in what, like the first like five plays. >> Yeah. I'd like not even turned the game on yet. I was still making dinner and I was like, "Oh, I can't wait." And next thing I know it's like, "Oh, >> Sam, I literally I turned it on as he was walking to the locker room and I was like, "That's not great." Uh, but no. And so Drew Lock obviously comes in. You have um some guys in the in the Seattle secondary that were also kind of some some depth guys for you, not your normal starters. And you look at kind of what they were able to do. Obviously, it wasn't pretty. Like at times there were moments where it looked like some of those guys hadn't really truly worked together, but they ended up doing enough to be able to, like you said, squeak out a win. >> Well, and that is why like so much of the preseason we spend talking about guys like Darnie Holmes or AJ Woods or Sydney Brown or these newcomers to a roster. And a big part of this offseason for Atlanta was elevating the floor and kind of adding some of those depth pieces. And I think we saw Wednesday night why that is because you need to the defensive line I think has been a great example of this over the last couple of seasons is having that depth to be able to not only mix and match your guys, >> but if anybody has to go down, you feel like you've got a capable group behind them to step right up. >> All right, last 30 seconds here before we move on. Australia game coming up. >> Yeah. >> Rams, 49ers. Okay, Will, I'm going to give you this and you have like five seconds to answer. Would you rather do what the 49ers did where they went out to Australia for a couple days, got acclimated, or what the Rams did where they flew right in and got ready to go? You've got 5 seconds. >> Tori, I often do my best work after a long night the night before and just turn it on and go. So, give me the Rams. I'll do it. >> Yeah. And that's time. Love it. Riding the buzzer. >> All right. Let's get on to uh to our B block and then let's talk a little bit about Tuagloa. Yeah. He was named starting quarterback this week. Um, we're going to kind of cover in depth a ton of the matchups and everything. We're briefly going to go through them today on the podcast, but if you want to hear more of an in-depth conversation specifically about the matchup, I would encourage you to check out our pregame show with Taylor Bismore, Dererick Rackley, and and myself. Uh, it'll go up Thursday afternoons at 5:00 PM. So, it'll already be out by the time you're listening to this conversation. So, it's going to make a great companion piece. But >> yeah, >> the news tua name the starting quarterback. What was your kind of initial reaction to hearing that? >> I think it made the most sense based on where the Falcons are right now and after talking more to Michael Penn Jr. as the the day went on after the announcement was made. It made perfect sense why they looked to Tua because Mike said verbatim, not ready to go yet. I'm not at 100% yet. He said he still feels like he has to get some more strength in his legs, some strength overall. And I think him being open and honest and he was like, I don't want to go out there if I can't give this team 100%. Makes the decision pretty easy. It kind of makes the decision for you that you you go with with Tua. And so the good news for the Falcons is is that they did go out and and plan for the event. Michael Pennix was not ready to go week one. And so we're seeing that actually come to you hope fruition and that Tua can go out against a pretty good Pittsburgh Steelers defensive line and have that protection, have the ability to to dump it off to Kyle Pitch, Drake Lind, and Bjon Robinson and kind of point guard this operation in this first week. >> Yeah, I think that is a great point. Um, obviously we knew going into the offseason that Michael Penn was recovering and and there was no clear timetable and everybody's body heals differently and X Y and Z, but it's like >> you can't just hope. That can't be a strategy, right? So, I think the Falcons again did an excellent job of acquiring a very experienced starting quarterback who has played at a high level at multiple points throughout his career and got him, you know, for a a bargain. And now we're seeing the importance of that depth even at the most important position because he gave you options to measure all throughout preseason and training camp. And, you know, we loved what Jack Strand and Cooper Rush could do. Cooper Rush will be the backup quarterback in this game. Michael Penn will be inactive as as you mentioned kind of like the health reasons behind that. But I thought it was great to see the coaching staff kind of collaborate, work with the player, especially early in the season, and say, "Okay, what's the bigger picture?" And then what helps us best in week one, right? >> And what helps him best in week one is Tua at starting quarterback. And how do you think that's going to >> Well, I was going to ask you actually because you know, you were in Tua's press conference uh yesterday recording this on Thursday. Tua spoke on Wednesday. I was in open locker room. I was talking to like some defensive guys getting a update on Billy Bowman Jr. He's doing well, acclimating really well. Talking to Kendall Daniels, he'll be starting at inside linebacker alongside Divine Diablo. Really excited for that to see to see both of those guys together. But you were actually in with Tua in that press conference. What was his demeanor like and what was he saying in response to to this decision ultimately being made for week one? Yeah, I mean he said first off he is always a very kind of like composed and and even killed person right when he when he is speaking to the media it's it is all very like polished I would say as you would expect starting quarterback to be he said it was a blessing right obviously again anytime that you can start at quarterback in the NFL that's not anything I think anybody would take lightly but the most interesting thing that I found was he spoke shortly after Bjon Robinson spoke and they both kind of gave like the same answer but flip side of the coin >> where Bjan was saying, "Hey, we want to go out there and the run game really helped take some of that pressure off of Tua, right? And a run game can be a quarterback's best friend, >> but then when we kind of brought that up to Tua, he was like, I love to hear him say that. I kind of feel the opposite. I think that the passing game needs to help open up the run game because it's no real secret that >> Jean Robinson in this run game is kind of the straw that or straw that stirs the drink. >> There it Why do they make saying so like tongue twisty? Um >> I think that's the point, >> right? Yeah. I mean, it's just to mess with me. >> I think it's a really good point that you make and I actually think I went back I was doing some research for Rise Up tonight, the show that I do with Fox 5. Check it out every Thursday night at midnight. Um, but Kelly Price asked me the same type of question like what I made of what Bjon was saying about the run game being kind of this supplement to Tua and and him talking about how the ownership's on the guys around Tua and that was something that is actually I think echoed from what Tommy Reese spoke about a couple weeks ago before the first Miami game when we talked to him last I know he's since talked but the last time we talked to him he was asked the question about Tua and you know taking ownership of the operation, everything like that. And he made the comment that when the operation is clean, when things are clean, Tua is as accurate as anyone. And we know that to be true. We've seen the stats. But I think the other part of that, because he continued on, that wasn't the only part of that quote. He continued on by saying that it's the coach's job to stress to the other 10 individuals around Tua to be detailed, to have understanding about what the offense is trying to do. And I think so I think actually what Bjon was saying was actually an echo of what Tommy Reese said a couple weeks ago about the holistic look of this offense and understanding that it's all working off of each other and and putting Tua essentially in the position of a clean operation and and a detailed operation to to manage it accordingly. Yeah, that's a great point to bring up because I I saw that that quote as well and it was like when when everything is clean around him, few are better and and we know that Tua is so accurate and he does have these playmakers at his disposal, but he's going to be going up against a pretty tough Steelers defense. And so, it's a really interesting first matchup. And one of the best parts about week one, right, is there's so much that's new. it feels like there all the opportunities are on the table and >> that can create a little bit of a challenge for the coaching staff when you're trying to prepare. You know, we know that >> they love to watch as much film as possible and cram everything in there and and even Kevin Stfansky kind of mentioned >> there is no shortage of tape when you're entering the season because you can kind of go back as far as you want to certainly with a coach like Mike McCarthy >> and Aaron Rogers at quarterback who have so much tape. But what do you make of this particular matchup where there's a combination of familiarity, >> but there's also so much new? >> Yeah, I think you're bringing up a really good point because I think when you look at this matchup and I was actually having a conversation with Divine Diablo in the locker room yesterday about this because I was like, I'm having a hard time like even pinpointing what I want to watch when it comes to what I think that the Steelers could be. And he was like, yeah. He was like, you kind of throw it all out there. And then he's he was talking about Jeff Albrich doing a really good job of of simplifying and really taking on the the keys and the cues that he thinks will be reoccurring. >> We asked them about that. He gave a great answer. So go check out the Falcons YouTube channel and watch that press conference. It was a really good >> explanation. Love it. Go. And so I was talking to Divine about it. Talked to Kendall about it as well, Kendall Daniels. and and he he was kind of made the comment that it's a bit more where he's like you almost have to go more inward when you're facing a team in in week one that has that much of like a level of change from a >> personnel standpoint but also from a new coaching staff standpoint, new scheme standpoint. And there the what's interesting about this matchup specifically is that the Steelers are doing the exact same thing with the Falcons because you can't tell me that they didn't go back and watch old Cleveland tape. You can't tell me that they didn't go back and watch what Michael Pennix was doing with the offense with Bjon Robinson, Drake London. You can't tell me they didn't even go back and look at the the fourish weeks where the Falcons didn't have Drake London and how they used Kyle Pittz when they didn't have Drake London. You know, like there are so many different layers and I know we're just talking offensively, right? There are so many different layers of what both teams could be going into week one that Kevin Spanzi is right like there is no shortage of tape because you could go and watch what Mike McCarthy did with Dallas. >> Yeah. >> Over the last few years you can go back to last year what Aaron Rogers did under Arthur Smith and Mike Tomlin with the Steelers. You heck you can go back you mentioned it to the Green Bay tape where Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rogers were together. Like there are so many variants that could show up that you almost have to play your game. >> I That's a great point because yeah, the permutations are endless. Like Mike McCarthy was with Rico Dowel in Dallas but not Aaron Rogers and now he has all three and what the heck does that like? So you can drive yourself crazy and I think that is where especially when you are new yourself. There is still so much to learn and you want to see the product that you've been working towards come to life onto the field real for the first time. So I think that it behooves the Falcons to really look inward and more focus on their game and play to their standard than really worry about the other team. >> And their defensive coordinator Patrick Graham was kind of saying the same thing. But I thought it was really interesting because he was like I'm going up to everybody to ask just about personnel. I don't really know what to expect scheme wise over there. So I'm not digging into that. But I'm going up to like Jaylen Ramsey and being like, "Hey, have you played Bjon Robinson before? And if so, what was it like and how did you try to tackle him and what were and it's like they're digging into the personnel because the scheme is kind of so unknown. Especially like >> from a culture standpoint too. The Steelers like they have been so strongly tied to an identity for so long. >> They maybe have undergone the biggest overhaul of like any franchise I think this off season just given >> who Mike Tomlin was and and kind of that departure. And >> you had a our very first know the foe segment. Yes. was the Pittsburgh Steelers. And >> boy, you you kind of talked about it right then and it is still, it feels like the number one story line going into this game and and that is the change at the uh head coaching position for the Steelers. So, let's let's watch that uh clip. >> Obviously, the biggest departure in the offseason for the Steelers is the main in charge is Mike Tomlin. The the fact of the matter is is I think that I saw a stat where there have been more popes at the Vatican since the 1970s than there has been new head coaches in Pittsburgh. like that is banable reference to me and Twitter. >> That has to be the biggest offseason because so much of I think what the Steelers were and have been came from the identity of their head coach in Mike Tomlin. From a roster standpoint, they didn't really lose like too much superstardom in in terms of players, but the end of the Tomlin era, I think, kind of overshadows everything else outside of Aaron Rogers, which again, we'll get to, but yeah, the parting of ways between a head coach that has meant so much to an organization for so long in a league that stands for not for long that how could you not say that that's the biggest departure of the off season for the Pittsburgh Steelers? First off, I definitely think you can tell that I just got back from the Indy500. I'm wearing an Indy500 hat and shirt. >> You super fan, girl. >> I literally went >> You love merch. >> I love merch. If there's one thing y'all need to know about me, it's I love merch. >> That was That was really, really well said. Do you have anything to add on to that now that we're on the other side of the offseason? I actually think that I it almost like doubles down a bit more like we because we still don't really know what the identity of the Steelers are in this new era. And to your point, like they and I think to the point that I made in that clip, like joking about how there have been more popes than Steelers head coaches, like when the Steelers organization latches on to a coach, it's almost like that coach becomes >> the entire like ecosphere of the organization. and every feeling thought that you have about the organization is pretty similar to the feelings and thoughts that you have about their head coach, which I actually don't think is necessarily the way that we think about a lot of other teams in this league, which is fascinating because you've seen it >> over decades of time. So, who are the Steelers when they're not coached by Mike Tomlin? Like I you know Mike Tomlin was the coach for so long that I don't really remember a time when he wasn't the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers and it's funny because I we were talking to Avon Terrell and I asked him I was like how cool is it that the very first quarterback you're going up against is is Aaron Rogers. I was like, I don't I know I don't remember a time when Aaron Rogers wasn't in this league. And Avon, who's a little bit younger than I am a little a little bit, uh he goes he goes, "Yeah, I think he's been in the league for 21 years and I'm 21 years old." >> He was born 10 months before Aaron Rogers took his first snap. >> See, and that I think that is a fascinating throughine and it connects to this whole like head coach conversation too because how long was Mike Tomlin with it was two decades, right? like two like 17 19 years I feel like somewhere around and he never losing season you know it's like >> he is was such a fundamental foundational part of that team identity it's it's so crazy now to not have him there >> but also and I don't even think you know that this happened but this morning I I talked to Pam Oliver who's doing the sideline report for for this game and the broadcast and >> we were talking about just like what is kind of the most compelling part and she immediately was locked in on those head coaches. But a a fascinating wrinkle is like the Steelers didn't do what they normally do, which is I'm going to go find a young coach and we're going to kind of do the the McVey thing or the Mike McDonald thing and like we're going to grow with them. They they went and got Mike McCarthy who's from the area and has ties to to Pittsburgh and and Pennsylvania and all of that, but >> he has an established way of going about things as Kevin Stfansky. So, it's a little bit of like how quickly can these guys and their culture and and their teachings the second time around or third time in Mike McCarthy's case like take hold and will we see that come to fruition in week one? >> Yeah, I think it's a broader conversation too that you can even lump the Falcons into as they also are going through coaching change everything like that is like how much of the head coach's identity bleeds into the team's identity overall. 100%. And I it's funny because it's like we'll be able I think we should be able to see that very early on like because something that's very different about this regime in compared to the previous one is a lot of what Raheem Morris said was that the players on the field dictate their identity. Whereas now I feel like that has kind of changed and evolved because you had Matt Ryan come in in his very very first press conference as the president of football and said here's who we're going to be >> and here's who we're working towards. This was before Kevin Stansky had been named the head coach. This is this is Matt Ryan coming in and being like we're going to be a physical smart football team. Like that is our core who we are, who we're about to be. We want to be physical and smart. And then you go out and get a head coach that falls into wanting to be working towards that same identity. So, it's it's an interesting like juxtaposition of like what was and what is and how the Falcons ultimately got there and how we see that transpire on on the field itself. >> I think that's incredibly important is to set that kind of like here's our goal. here is who we are >> early on and up top. And I think there like >> Jeff is such a great example of what that is and our heart mind fist series kind of covered that last year. But so much of the game has become like >> evolving and multiplicity and flexibility and versatility and all of that. But you can have both. You don't have to lose an identity just because you're versatile. And I think that that is something that is going to be so fascinating to watch with Kevin Stfansky and this Falcons team is like you have such versatile interesting pieces and yet how do what do they coales around? What is that core identity? So what do you think we're going to see? We're going to get the first chance the first chance. Tori, I'm so excited on Sunday to get this era started. What do you think the offense is is going to look like? And and I'll cover defense, but let's like just fire it off. >> Okay. Yeah, I'll I'll start I'll start with the offense. I I think that we are going to see obviously Bjon is going to be the the center spoke of this offense and I we've said that regardless of quarterback regardless of what decision gets made like it's Bjon you move the ball with Bjon you have the explosives with Bjon like and that's not to that that's really not to say anything about anybody else in the operation it really is just how special of a player Bjon is >> led the NFL in scrimmage last season >> right yeah like you got to give the first thing that Kevin Spinsky said about kind of taking over this offense is like we got to find ways to get the ball in the Bush's hands. So, there's that. Bjan's going to get his point blank period. Uh I do think that we're going to see kind of um and this goes back to something that Kevin Stbansky was talking about earlier this week about playing and play calling to the strengths of your guys. I think we are gonna see that fold over into what Tua does best at the quarterback position, which isn't necessarily, as I know was a big talking point after the final preseason game, isn't necessarily these gigantic explosive plays. It is more of this conservative approach to moving the ball downfield, making sure that you're getting the ball into the hands of your playmakers and letting them go do what they do best, allowing them to have that that opportunity. So, I think what I am curious about seeing, so those are the two things that I think like we're going to see. What the two things that I'm most curious how things evolve for this offense is how much we see of the run game evolution with the insertion of more gap style stuff along with the stretch zone stuff that they've already been doing. That was something we've been talking about for a very long time. What does that actually look like? How does that play to be Bjon strengths? because we know he comes from a system in Texas that was super gap heavy. So there's that. And then finally, under center play action, under center work, Tua Tua Takabaloa getting under center, what that does for this offense, what it ultimately opens up and the wrinkles that it allows this offense to to potentially, you hope, exploit. So those are kind of my big ticket items. >> I love that. Yeah, the the play action in particular is going to like use Bon to help you in the passing game outside of just being a receiver. Yeah, that should be that should be great. Can't wait. So, defensively, >> this will be the first chance for us to see Divine Diablo with the Green Dot. You know, now at the heart of the defense and truly kind of communicating and how it's all going to flow together. I have high hopes for what this unit can be in year two under Jeff because of that continuity piece of it. And really now like the defensive line is one of the biggest like changes because there is so much of that that continuity. But you've got different body types in the defensive line room now. They're much bigger. And we just saw Javvon Dexter senior come over and I mean Jeff was talking about that earlier today on Thursday and was saying yeah we're a lot bigger but he doesn't feel like they've lost any of that explosive first step ability and in this attacking scheme you got to be able to kind of penetrate in that one gap style. So hopefully we see that both impact the run defense and help them improve there while also keeping the pass rush kind of juicy to use a Nate Ali term. >> Um the rookies obviously like that's it's week one we saw last season uh I think Billy Bowman was like one of the very first players to kind of like jump out. same with Xavier Watts. Like, but those two that it's always fun around the league in the first few weeks to see which rookies >> just feel ready and feel like they belong in the NFL. And I think the Falcons have a few great candidates on that. Um, and then really it's going to be can you play a clean game defensively and offensively and can you create more turnovers than than you're going to give away. I think that's a a huge part of what ultimately Sunday is going to come down to. >> Yep. I like it. All right, let's move on to our final segment for today's podcast. I So, what will be the very first What will be the result of the very first drive between the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans. >> That's That's a great matchup. >> I love this match. I'm very It's one of the ones that I'm very excited to see this weekend. I'm going to say the result of this. Give me like a sevenplay drive that ends in a field goal. >> Okay. >> There was so much tension building to that. I was like, >> it's this is hard because it's like, okay, I have a different answer depending on who gets the ball first, but I don't know who's going to get the ball. >> I actually don't know if you if you like I think you nailed it. I actually think that's exactly how it's going to play out because obviously we know Houston's defense and the Bills offense, but then you flip it and I still feel like it's a pretty evenly matched kind of deal. So, >> so give me like seven plays in a field goal. >> Love that. >> All right, >> your turn, Will. >> No, we're we're never doing that again. >> Okay, >> she says as he does. Um, all right. Will the first touchdown of the game be a rush or a pass between the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs? Oo, Monday night. >> That's tough. >> It is tough. I am going to say they're I'm going to say that it's going to be a rush. Okay, >> because I think it'll either be Bo Knicks running it in or I think the Chiefs are going to try to get Kenneth Walker a score. >> See, I was thinking that or I could see like Patrick Mahomes just being like, "I'm back, baby. Get me in the end zone. I'm running it myself." I like it. Okay, number three. This is an uneven surface that I am struggling. >> It is. Yeah. >> Um, how many combined sacked How many combined sacks will there be in the Arizona Cardinals versus the Los Angeles Chargers? >> I love the color work on these, too. We really We wasted a lot of coloring. >> Great job. Oh, I was thinking great job producer. >> Oh, great job. We just also wasted a lot. >> Okay. I'm not seeing this. Well, I don't know. Justin Herbert is okay. I'm gonna say how many combined combined sacks is where it it gets me. I'm gonna say there's going to be a I'm going to go conservative and I'm going to say there's going to be three combined sacks. >> Oo, that is conservative. >> Yeah, I'm being very conservative because I actually think that I don't necessarily think that Justin Herbert, even though his history may say differently, I actually don't think this year that he will be sacked a whole lot. I'm I'm very high on what the Chargers offense could be this year. Uh Mike McDaniel coming over and and also Jesse Mentor now in Baltimore and not in LA, their defensive coordinator. So yeah, I think I think that's a good uh solid low number. >> Yeah, I I'm just going to go conservative for the first week. >> All right, my turn.
