Everton V Wolverhampton Wanderers | Carabao Cup | Starting XI Show
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video presents a detailed analysis and predicted starting lineup for Everton's upcoming Carabao Cup match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, set against the backdrop of a demanding three-game week following a draw with Spurs. The commentator acknowledges the strategic dilemma faced by manager David Moyes regarding squad rotation, noting that while teams often use long breaks to rest players or arrange friendlies, Everton must balance cup ambitions with Premier League preparations. A key focus is on maintaining team fitness without overloading key players, as the upcoming break after this match could be crucial for recovery before the next fixture against Ipswich Town.
In terms of specific selections, the prediction favors goalkeeper Jordan Pickford despite minor concerns about his kicking, emphasizing the need to start the best available option unless there are significant issues. The defense sees Miles Lewis starting at right-back to gain essential game time, while James Tarkowski and Jake O'Brien are chosen for the center-back partnership, giving O'Brien a chance to recover from recent limited play. In midfield, the lineup includes James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Juju Hernandez, with Harrison Armstrong potentially being rested in favor of Hackney to provide fresh legs, although the possibility of bringing him on as a substitute remains open depending on his fitness status.
The attacking strategy involves significant rotation to manage player workload, particularly up front where Brennan Johnson is predicted to start ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. This decision allows Calvert-Lewin to rest for the subsequent Premier League game against Ipswich, ensuring he is fresh for a critical match later in the week. The winger positions feature Tyler Dibling and Jack Grealish, both selected to gain necessary minutes and build confidence ahead of the weekend's league fixture. The commentator stresses that winning these two consecutive games would provide an ideal start to the season, allowing the squad to rest effectively during the international break and avoid player fatigue.
Ultimately, the proposed lineup represents a subtle shift rather than a complete overhaul, aiming to give senior players variety while integrating others into the first team environment. The analysis concludes that managing minutes carefully is vital to prevent injuries and maintain peak performance levels throughout the congested schedule. By rotating key figures like Calvert-Lewin and providing opportunities for players like Dibling and Hackney, Everton can ensure a balanced squad ready for the challenges of both domestic cups and league competition, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the season.

Welcome to Toffee TV. This is starting
11 show. Everton versus Wolves in the
Carabal Cup.
Interesting on this because
obviously three games in a week
and obviously we want to go through in
the cup and obviously we want to beat
Ipsswitch after drawing with Spurs. But
then there's a break and it's quite a
long break. In fact, it's such a long
break that I've seen some teams have
been arranging friendlies. So, I don't
think it's a break necessarily that
teams want because they want to try and
get their players up to speed. So, it
does leave an interesting
dilemma for David Moyes. He's already
mentioned that it's almost like well
winning a cup or staying up, which is
what he basically said.
But now knowing what we know about the
size of our squad,
it does it does make it interesting on
who he's going to pick. But anyway, I'm
going to talk about the team I'm going
to pick. So, in goal, I'm going to go
with Jordan Pigford.
Just come off a clean sheet. Um,
you know, I can see the temptation to
maybe give him a rest. Um,
you know, but for me, I think you need
to start your you know, your goalkeeper,
your best goalkeeper, unless there's an
issue.
Some of his kicking might suggest there
might have been an issue. I don't know.
But, uh, I'm I'm going to go for Jordan
Pigford at right back. Angley Maitlin
Niles start. He needs the game time. Um,
we haven't got another right back, of
course. We don't know if mail and rolls
fit. He could play there. Um
I'm just obviously without having a
without there being a press conference
or anything. I'm just going to have to
think that he meant role isn't fit. It's
the way I'm looking at this team. Um
so Miles needs the minutes. If you know
again he played what 70 minutes at the
75 minutes at the weekend. Could he push
that to 90? Could he, you know, is 7
another 75 okay with the likes of
players we've got who could go in there?
But good opportunity again for him to
get another game under his belt. Uh
first start at Hill Dickensson. So he
starts at right back at left back.
Maleno coming off the man of the match
performance. Um yeah doesn't know what
the left back is there. So he's playing
left back. two center backs I'm going to
go for
James Takowski and Jake O'Brien as my
center backs. I think it's important
that again Brantoe
is 100% for Saturday
and
I think Jake can come in. I know the
left hand side's not not maybe his
favorite side but I don't think Taki
needs a rest. I'm not going to go oh
bring Michael Keane in as well. I don't
think Taki does need a rest and I think
he might he might need a rest but he
doesn't look like he needs a rest. So
I'm going to go for the So I think Jake
good opportunity Jake come back off the
naughty step at the weekend didn't he by
coming on and playing right back. So
good opportunity for him for Jake to
come in play alongside Taki um and show
what he's all about really. And I think,
listen, it's not the same class as
Brandweight, but it's still a really
good center back. So, I'm going to go
for them in midfield.
Um,
I suppose the big decision is James
Garner and whether his fitness allows
him to play or is he is it actually an
advantage that he does play and maybe
play 70 minutes or ahead of the Premier
League game? I'm not I don't know
because I don't know exactly what he
needs. He needs I I imagine he just
needs fitness, but is it overloading him
the same way we'd leave Brandweight out?
I'm not really sure, but I am picking
him. Um, so let's get that out the way.
I am picking him
cuz I do think it's I do think it's
important that he plays to the team. So
for me, he has to start. And alongside
them, I'm going for Hayden Hackne. uh
leaving Harrison Armstrong out of this
game just just to bring Hackne and give
him some minutes. Now it might be a case
that the manager looks at him and leaves
Harrison in there alongside Hayden
Hackne or listen Harrison Armstrong
whatever happens if he starts on the
bench he'll come on and he'll play some
parts. It's not this is why you have a
squad to move people around to give
people opportunities to get as many
minutes as you can without unsettling
the team. And I think I think that's
what we're doing there. And I think
Hayden Hack he's played enough minutes
this season. So he's not coming in cold
like we saw with plays last season. Um
so for me and if Men roll was was fit
then maybe I'd have a little look at him
but maybe he might be fit enough to to
play come off the bench and then he
could come in at right back or into
center midfield. So I think I think
we're fine in there. And ahead of them
I'm going to go for Juju Hall. I think
you do need your best players
to play in these games.
You can make changes for but for me I
think you need a spine. Um and I think
with having
Pigford and Taki and Garner and Dooby
Hall I think that's the spine that you
need for these games and you can move
people around
to uh to suit in other positions
at right wing. I'm gonna go for Tyler
Dibble. I think he needs a game. He
needs some minutes and I think this is
an opportunity for him to get those.
If he's not having a great game, there
are other players that can come on and
take the place. But I do think it's
important that he gets an hour under his
belt just for the sake of the whole
squad as well. I don't think we can
afford players sitting on the bench who
are not getting minutes because there
will be a time when they they'll be
called upon.
Um the rest of the team so far basically
apart from Jake O'Brien have had
of starter games this season. So it's
not like we're really throwing a you
know a change team in. I'm just making a
few subtle changes, but Tara's one that
comes in from the cold, and I think you
can afford to bring one in from the
cold. Um, and then it's up to him to get
some minutes. He played in the last
round, so it's up to him to get, you
know, to to to really
show people what he's all about. On the
other side, I'm going to go for Jack
Leish. Again, I think it's about
minutes. I think it's about getting game
time. I think this gives him a great
opportunity ahead of the game on
Saturday against Ipsswitch and then we
have that break. I think he needs to
start a game and I think this will be
perfect for him. Um,
again, I want to this is one where I
want to see Evan go out there and try
and win the game in the first hour. I
think that's really important and these
two games are really important for for
everyone's confidence, fans and players.
It'd be a great start to the season if
we can win these two games.
It will we you know we can have we can
have a little break then and go actually
that's not that's not a that's not a bad
start at all and give everyone you know
everyone will rest then there's not
there won't be loads of players going on
international duty but it will give
everyone a good rest after that and up
front I'm going to go for Brennan
Johnson. Um, I do think that
the opportunity to maybe to rest Barry
in this game is there. I think it gives
us an opportunity to play a slightly
different way as well. And I think Bren
Johnson just taking
just just giving Barry just a just a
break. Barry can come on for the last
half an hour or whatever, but I do think
that it will be an opportunity to just
move the pieces round a little bit. Um
Barry will be back on Saturday to play
up front, but I do think this gives us
an opportunity because I do think you
can't play Barry every single game for
90 minutes up front. You just can't.
Um, so I do think this is an opportunity
to just give him a rest and give allow
another player to play up front and see
see what he's all about. And we'll have
to play different ways. We'll have to
play the ball down the sides of the
center backs and and into the spaces
behind uh rather than going, you know,
long ball to head. That'll have to be
binned out the window. So, we're going
to have to play a different way. But I I
do think you have to I do think it's
really important for this squad to give
the players, the senior players chances
to get minutes in, you know, in in the
legs and give some players an
opportunity to just get a break cuz
they're not going to get too many more
breaks. Um cuz the more you push them,
the more they're likely to snap. So
anyway, that's my Stan 11. Anyway, um
let me know your thoughts. You agree? Do
you disagree? Make sure to check out the
match preview as well. And uh yeah,
we'll be back with all of the latest
after this game, all of the reaction.
