Afternoon everyone. Welcome to our pre-match press conference to preview our game against Dipsswitch. We'll start off with that one from Sky. >> Thanks Andy. Uh afternoon David. Um one win, three draws in the Premier League, two rounds of the Caribal Cup negotiate. It's not been a bad start, has it? How what's your assessment at this stage, David? Uh, no. We've been pleased with the players, but obviously we'd like to turn a couple of those draws into wins if we can, but uh, in some occasions we turned maybe losses into draws. So, we have to accept that. >> Um, and I suppose these games where you're up against promoted sides, there's a little bit of an expectation maybe from fans that these are the ones you should be taking the points from at home. >> Well, I think everybody who now watches the Premier League wouldn't say there's no expectations anymore because of the the level of the teams and whoever's playing. I think even more so this year. I think it looks if it's, you know, quite up and down at the moment. We're seeing Hull doing brilliantly well in the Premier League where I don't think many people would have seen that. So, uh, I don't think you can take any any team for granted and certainly if people are raising their expectations because of the opposition, they've certainly got it wrong. >> What What is your assessment of Ipsswitch? Um, making a a better fist of it than when they were in the Premier League last time. Does that stand in goodstead really? Well, they've only just started, so it'll that'll be have to wait and see, but overall, I think they've started the season pretty well and uh they'll be pleased with where they are. >> Just back to Wednesday night, you you played a strong side, you may say that you have to given given the squad depth, etc., but anybody out there who's made a real push and given you a selection headache maybe for uh tomorrow. I I was really pleased with a lot of the performances which we had, you know, uh Tyler Dibling, Jack Gish to get the the minutes he did and and come through. Uh you know, they were they were the ones Hayden's does well every time he plays for us. So, we're we're pleased with all those boys who come in, but that's part of it. You know, we need them all to be performing and we need a group of players who when they're selected, then we can we can get them to to play well. any fitness issues from Wednesday night? >> Well, we're still still waiting in Harrison a little bit to see how he is. We we expect him to be okay Harrison. Uh Merlin Rolls not available yet. Uh hopefully he'll be he'll be ready when he come, you know, at the end of the window uh at end of the window, end of the the international break I should say. So hopefully we get them back then. >> Um talking of internationals, Jared Bran has been selected uh in the England squad. You must be very pleased for him. really pleased for MD who gets selected for their countries. Uh Jared even more so because of the injuries he's had. But I was hearing that he's only been in been he's got one England captain and I think it was only 25 or 27 minutes or something. So uh I hope he doesn't play four games that's for sure where he is. But but I'd be I'd be thrilled if Jared gets in and I think that he's got potential to be a really good player in and showing lots of that at the moment. I mean that most of the Everton fans really say they want to see Jared Branweight fit for a whole season. It's not that simple, is it? But are you are you pleased with where he is at the moment in terms of those fitness levels? >> Yeah, I think some some players can take a little bit of time. You know, Jar's big tall boy, long limbs, you know, can can take a little bit of time just to make sure that they're uh they grow into it a little bit. Uh and over the last year or two, obviously, we've been disappointed not to get more of them, but let's hope we can. and we've we sort of nurtured him through preseason. Uh the staff here have done a really good job on him and uh you know the help he's had to sort of prepare himself for the season. So hopefully he'll be he'll be fine. >> Do you feel a little bit for Keenan Juicebury Hall and James Garner? Do you think they had a a >> Yeah, Jimmy Gardner coming back from injury for a hernia operation which he he rushed back to be back for the start of the season was probably unexpected if it uh if it was going to happen. I think Kieran might just be a little bit unlucky to be outside of it at the moment. But uh no, if he keeps scoring, keeps playing the way way he has been, then he'll he'll be in an outside chance. >> This is the final game before an extended international break. Um so obviously two breaks before the end of the year instead of the three. What are your thoughts around that? Is it a benefit? >> Well, I don't think MD can really have any big thoughts on it because it's never happened before, I don't think, on on what it looks like. Uh I would be surprised if it's a benefit from where we are. I think we'd rather the the league continue, but uh we do have international breaks, but this is the longest one I can remember. Certainly, I think it's the first time we've ever gone for three weeks uh certainly during the season. So uh yeah, I think we'll all have to go on with it. We've got no choice. >> Well, it will be that going forward, I believe, as well. So what what do you do with those players who haven't been called up for international duty? Are there fitness issues for them? Do you arrange games, friendlies or >> Well, [clears throat] we we quite moan quite a lot around about Christmas time because we play too much football. So, now we've got an opportunity to maybe to give players a little bit more rest time. Certainly not international players. If you're an international player, then you've got to deal with it all. But, uh the other players who are not in that situation might have a bigger opportunity to get a little bit more downtime and train differently at different times. And I'm guessing most clubs will are will probably be preparing their own their own in-house games. But but then don't managers moan about match sharpness and players lacking it. >> Well, we moan about everything, don't we? You know, so we moan if some know the fix the fixture congestion and what they're doing with the fixtures is is really really poor. But obviously that's also part of probably the international schedule etc. >> But uh I think we just everybody will just get on with it and do what we can and see how it goes. >> Okay, good luck tomorrow. >> Thank you. >> Thanks Al. We'll go to Stuart at Premier League Studios. >> Hi there. >> Um on on Jared, how much how much work has he put in over the years because you mentioned he's had quite a number of injuries. How much determination does he have to show to get to this stage where he's now England's selectable? >> Well, look Jared Jared uh you know come up started at Kle and I think that the club here done a great job on recruiting them in the first place was a brilliant bit of recruitment from Everton. uh also put him out in loan at right moments on his on his young up and cominging career. Uh unfortunately as we said earlier know missed a missed a couple of bits of seasons with with injury. So if he can get himself back then I've got no doubt he'll he'll be in contention. He's a he's a really good footballer and he's a a good center half. So he he's got a lot of people I'm sure he he we he'd sort of thank for it. lots of people long before before I've stepped in who've helped him already become an England international and uh obviously helped him get a move from Kle to Everton and and uh he's developed greatly in the in the recent seasons and certainly what I've seen of him uh he was somebody when I came in who I was determined that the club should should make sure we keep hold of. >> And you mentioned Tyler's performance on on Wednesday. Obviously different players take longer to settle into a new club, a new city, um a new team than others. Do you feel that he's now ready to to really show everyone what he's made? >> I think he's much more ready now than he than he was. I think he's he's he's got a bigger fight in his belly. I think he's acting in a way where he's wanting to show it. He did certainly in the game in midweek he showed it. So, it can take time and and look the history I've had at the club here over longer periods. We used to bring in boys and it took them a long time, six months a year maybe to become first team regulars. And uh Tyler's probably found it quite tough, but he's now beginning to show his teeth a little bit and show shows exactly what he he can do. >> And you've got the momentum of having this unbeaten start. So in in a way, do you not welcome the break because you've got the momentum? >> Well, you could look at it a different way, I think, just you could look at it in a way where I would say that, you know, we could keep them. would like to keep it going. Now, why would we do we want to stop? But on the other hand, you know, it also gives us a chance know with a smaller squad just to try and make sure that we we can sort of get the players correct. And, you know, as we said, we only we Harrison and Merlin out for a couple of games there. So, you know, it doesn't take much for you to to go the other way for you. So, hopefully uh we can get both of them back fit and ready and uh in a good place for for obviously when we come back. >> Thanks, Stuart. We'll go to Julia at Radio Moses side. >> Hi Julie. >> Hi David. Just on um Tyler Dibbling there. You know you're saying you've seen the fight. I spoke to your assistant Alan Irvine after the game and he said he came back different after this summer. >> Yeah. >> I just wonder did you see that and when you are dealing with settling him in how have you dealt with that? Is it sort of a tough love? Is it a do you have to take him to one side? Well, a bit of them all really, Julia, because uh I think you you try to put over what we do at Everton, what we expect from them. You know, he's coming in from a different environment, different culture where he's been. And uh I think there's a lot of Everton's culture of what we need need that he still has to find and show for us. I think he's beginning to show that. I think he showed it on a brilliant recovery tackle in the game the the other night. You know what? do we really want from him though is we want him to take people on. We want him to score. We want him to assist. And he's just beginning to show that a bit more now than what he's done done previously. Uh I don't know how long it can always take people to settle in. I've always thought that the players who come from overseas can can take longer, but the proof is that, you know, they could be they could come in and settle right away. But I'm just going back to the history of bringing boys from the lower leagues. And I don't mean that Southampton at the time weren't necessarily in the lower leagues, but boys who are coming up, I've mentioned them time and time again. Sometimes it can take a bit of time for them to sort of establish themsel getting the team. But sometimes sitting in the bench then watching it makes them ready and more hungry when they do get the opportunity. >> When you say the culture of Everton, do you have to be a type of person or a type of player to succeed at this club? >> I believe so. I believe that there is there is uh which has been handed down from Howard Kendall, Peter Reed, you know, you can name them all all the people over the years who've been at the club, people through the I think there's there's something in it and uh I think that culture is still still here and I hope it I hope it remains here. >> Charlie Alcarz midweek, I think he'd been on three minutes when he scored. I know he's waited for for his moments and to talk about taking those moments when you're given them. >> Has he given you another option? We we've all sat here and asked you about the striker situation. You've only got one. Has he given you that option now? >> Yeah, we we thought about it. You know, we played Brennan center forward really the other night and that was that was another alternative to it when when we took Tu off. Uh but the biggest thing about Charlie is he keeps keeps working hard, keeps pushing, trains really well, uh trying to be the best he can. and that gives him every chance of us using him at at different moments in the games and we did the other night and he came up with a really good goal. I think it's something we've always thought that he has got Charlie as he's got a goal in him. So, uh we need goals and we need people who can score and on the night we we needed Charlie. >> There's been so many headlines in recent weeks. We barely touched on Jack Greish when he returned. So, yeah, he started midweek. It feels like he settled quickly because it's almost as though he never really left. was here for the full season pretty much last season even though he was injured for half of it. What do you see Jack Reish's role being for Everton this season? What do you want from him? >> Yeah, I'd very much like it to to be of the levels he was at the start of last season. That's what I want. Uh I think he can give us uh the ability to retain possession, keep the ball longer. Uh it gets us up the pitch. So, he gives us lots of things, but the bits I want from him is is what I say from all the all the forward players. I'm looking for assists. I'm looking for goals. Uh I want them to score. I need them to score. Uh Tyreek scored a great goal last week for us what week just over a week ago. Yeah. Uh so, I need them to to help us with assists and also and to be fair, you know, I think Jab was a bit unlucky. I think he he he made a couple of chances the other night and we didn't take them. So, uh, I hope that, uh, he can do that for us. >> Finally, for me, you've got your Everton in the community badge on today, and I know the charity's taking over the stadium for the game, >> uh, doing lots of activations. You've been here >> twice now, and pretty much when Everton, the community was sort of in its infancy. >> What does it mean to everybody here inside Finch Farm and across the club? >> I think we're actually really proud of the Everton in the community because of what it does. Uh I'm from a city from Glasgow where there's a a lot of lot of sort of difficult situations in the city, not unlike Liverpool itself. And I think Everton do their utmost to try and make sure that they they do what they can. Uh there's a lot of people who who work for for nothing, do the work, go out and help to to bring that in. So I think that Everton and the community have done a brilliant job and I think it's got bigger because of of the strength of it over the years. And I hope the people who come to the game can can throw a few bob into the into the bucket if that's what it is because there's no doubt it'll go in the right direction and and help people whether it be disadvantaged people or disabled people etc. They'll they'll be trying to do something for the for the people who need it. >> Thank you. After the victory against Wolves [clears throat] on Wednesday night, it's now the club's longest um unbeaten start to a season since Angelotti side where they went eight games unbeaten at the start of the season. Just how what's the feel of the squad? You know, Vitali Michelenko we spoke on after the Spurs game about the squad feel about how he thinks it's the best squad since he came to the club in 2022. >> Just what's the morale and the feeling around the squad at the moment? Well, within the group, we we're we're keeping it really tight, really compact, and there's a really good feel between us, but we're also aware that, you know, we've got a lot to do. We're going to have to keep keep scoring goals and making goals. We've certainly improved on on all those aspects, you know, numbers wise, more opportunities, more chances. So, so we're we're we're getting closer to that and coupled with, you know, us keeping clean sheets as well has been really really important for us. But yeah, there's a good spirit amongst the players. They're in they're in good fettle. You know, they're I think getting a bit of momentum. Coming back from games where you're losing is a good sign as well that they're showing that. And uh you know, we've we've won a couple of cup games. Even the other night, the cup game we won, you know, we we played well, but we had to keep going. We couldn't find a way in and eventually we got there later in the game. So, uh there's lots of things are beginning to do a lot better. So, yeah, I agree with Mo. We've got a good squad and we want to try and keep it going. >> Thanks very much. Any further questions?
