Video summary
Everton secured a significant 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park, marking their first home win of the season and ending a five-year drought of scoring on opening day. The match was defined by Everton's superior overall performance and their ability to capitalize on key defensive errors from the visitors. A pivotal moment occurred early in the game when James Tarkowski attempted to clear a ball that was going over him, but his back header deflected onto Jordan Pickford's line, resulting in an incredible save that kept the score at nil-nil. This narrow escape highlighted the high stakes of the opening match, as Palace would have taken the lead had the ball not been pushed onto the post by the goalkeeper.
The breakthrough came through a well-executed team move involving Ilman and Jay, who tested Dean Henderson before Harrison Armstrong delivered a brilliant goal that put Everton up 1-0. The momentum continued into the second half with Everton maintaining pressure and forcing Palace into errors, eventually leading to the second goal. Hayden Hackney rose to head the ball past Henderson after a clever cross from Ilman and Jay, sealing the win. Despite some frustration regarding missed opportunities where shots hit the post or were blocked, Everton controlled the game effectively, particularly in the final stages when they sat back slightly to protect their lead while still posing a constant threat on the counter-attack.
David Moyes's tactical decisions and squad management played a crucial role in the result, with standout performances from several players including Tyreek George, who was voted man of the match by fans, and the midfield duo of Harrison Armstrong and Hayden Hackney. Hackney made an impressive Premier League debut, displaying composure and work rate that silenced any doubts about his readiness for first-team football. The defense also earned credit for a clean sheet, with Vitali Melenko working tirelessly to support the attack while Merlin Ro contributed significantly with overlapping runs. Even after injuries sidelined key players like James Garner early in the preseason, the team's depth was evident as substitutes like Brennan Johnson stepped up effectively during his debut.
This victory sets Everton up strongly for the rest of the season, especially with Brentford and Spurs facing their own challenges elsewhere in the league table. The win not only boosts morale but also confirms that the squad is ready to compete at a high level immediately. While there were moments of defensive vulnerability and some questionable decisions by Palace players, Everton's resilience and clinical finishing ensured they walked away with all three points. As the team looks ahead, the focus remains on building on this momentum to maintain their position near the top of the Premier League standings.

Welcome to Toffee TV. Here is the match
reaction. Everton 2, Crystal Palace
Nilla, Hill Dickinson Stadium today.
Great result for Everton. Brilliant to
win a game of football, isn't it? It's
been a while. You know, it's the first
time I believe Everton have scored on
the open day of the season for five
years. So, big big win today. It was all
about I've said all week it was just
about getting the three points today. I
wasn't bothered sort of to how Edton
achieved it. But you know what? Overall,
they were the better team and fully
deserved the victory. That being said,
and more on it in a minute, we did ride
our look at times as well. David Moyes
went with the team that I'd picked in
the week. Obviously, Men Roll still
slotting in at right back. Thought he
did thought he did okay at right back
again. Loads of energy, good bit of pace
down at side. Tyreek George off the
left. Ilman and Jay on the right gave a
Premier League debut to Hayden Hackne.
Although a lot of people yesterday at
the after David Moyes's press conference
were questioning whether or not Hackne
would be given the game time to play,
but he played today and I thought he was
excellent. And more on that as well uh
in a bit. But Everton started the game
okay I thought um you know got on the
front foot the 1878 marvelous display
before the game obviously it's a lovely
day 3:00 Saturday but you can't ask so
much more on day one can you and you
know I thought um the players were sort
of boyed by the atmosphere the crowd
created but Palace then had sort of such
a brilliant opportunity early on a
lovely ball from uh knock forward And
James Tarovski
sort of I don't know why he went he
tried to stretch to clear it instead of
realizing it was going over him and
maybe just running into the space and
trying to deal with it and his back
header landed the um the Crystal Palace
players foot and he's in on Golden and
Jordan Pikford makes an absolute
brilliant save from it. Pushes it onto
the post. Unbelievable save really. Um
and you know to keep it at nil nil and
such a key moment you know palace would
have been ahead it's a different game
isn't it alto together but it was an
absolute worldass save from Jordan Pford
to keep it at nil nil ever then had a
couple of lovely moves and one that
ended with Ilman and J testing Dean
Henderson which he made a save from
straight it's a save Henderson should
make but he still had to he still had to
do it and then Palace hit the post again
lovely little ball from Adam Walton
caught out roll again and his some of
his he played well overall but just a
couple those couple of occasions there
was big gaps where he was a little bit
sort of caught out and he got in again
the ball was cut back I think it was
Mitch who cut it back and Mateta uh hit
the post he'll be looking thinking he
should have absolutely buried it he beat
Pigford and it hit the post again and
come out so two huge let offs for
Everton at the other end we looked
lively Ty George had really you know
been going at Crystal Palace had the
right foot shot and the left foot shot
that got blocked. Um Ken and Jbury Hall
weirdly started the game. I thought he
just couldn't get into it. He looked a
little bit off the pace of it. He's
normally so good with his passing and it
was it was off. Uh and just before
I was just think you know talking to the
people around me saying he's just looked
miles off of here. It wasn't he wasn't
putting the work in. He just looked a
little bit sluggish and like I say, some
of his passing wasn't great. Um, but
they had a little couple of moments
where he went and nicked the ball, went
on a great run and put a lovely ball
across to Tiero Barry who tried to do
that thing when you want to make sure
take a touch and you're trying to steady
yourself to get a shot away instead of
just hitting through the ball first
time. I think you know it looked a lot
better and then Ju Bol Harrison
Armstrong ball into him does what he
does brilliantly. shifts it onto his
left foot and whips it back past Dean
Henderson and into the far corner to get
us up and running. Brilliant. Absolutely
brilliant goal. Everton really boyed by
that and you know really putting Crystal
Palace under pressure. We had had um a
penalty call for V. I think it was a
penalty. I think the referee didn't give
it. I think V looked at it and it was a
penalty but Jabbrate was offside. So
therefore, offside was the correct
decision and not a penalty. Um, not that
I believed we'd get a V decision anyway,
but obviously he was offside. So you
can't argue with a with not getting a
penalty if he's offside. So half time
winning 1 nil came out for the second
half and got on the front foot straight
away and really pushed Palace back
because the worry not the worry so to
speak but you would have expect um a big
re a big response from Crystal Palace
going into the second half but Everton
come out and just got back on the front
foot. Lots of energy putting them under
pressure. Then Barry who we thought had
a good game was working hard up there
and J you know real pressing from the
front as well. George like I said and
Harrison Armstrong and Hayden Hackne
were absolutely fantastic and you've
always got that quality of Jews Hall
just behind it. So um you know we were
really sort of buzzing all over them and
and forcing them in to errors but then
we went and got the second goal
brilliantly. Ilman and Jai great play
from Ru. Great play down the right
little flick with the outside of the
foot. Ilman and Jai goes on the outside,
whips across intro Barry rises and
plants a header past Dean Henderson for
two-0. It was the breeding space Evan
wanted. It was the breeding space Evan
deserved and they were in total and
utter control. And it looked at that
stage. How many could it be? There was
another fantastic move. Really, really
good bit of football again. ball in,
knocked down and Ilam and Jai hit it and
Henderson makes a really good save but
the shot was right at him either side of
him he was in huge trouble and it would
have been 3-0
you know and and they were hanging on a
little bit Crystal Palace at that stage
I think the frustrating thing I think
forever some Evertonians will be um was
that ever them then went and sat in to
sort of making sure there was two banks
of four sat behind kind of ball but
that's what you've got to do it. You've
got to produce professional performances
at times and you know Everton still
carried that threat. Palace got on the
ball a bit more. Walton and Kamadada got
on the ball a little bit more. They
brought on Strand and took Mateta off.
They took Dwight McNeel off. He didn't
really couldn't really get into it. They
brought Jeremy Pino on as well in that
and they they knocked it round nicely
Palace but Everton did give them the
ball and Everton looked to spring them
on the break, you know, win the ball and
then go and and we we did look dangerous
when we did that. You know, again, Tyrie
George has fired one sort of a cross
shot over Jbury Hall put one magnificent
ball in. Although that was a bit later
on that Betto should have got on the end
of at the back post. Brennan Johnson
almost bet on Brennan Johnson came on
and that David Moyes sign uses subs. It
was great to see James Garner coming on
as a sub as well. He's obviously not
played a game in preseason at all. Got
an injury early on and had to have a
little bit of a a cleanup job on his
groin. I think a minor operation. He's
back, you know, and and I think it was a
hernia, wasn't it? He's back in there
today. Come on and worked hard. So,
that's what you want to see. I thought
I've got to say I thought Vitali Melenko
had a really good game today. You know,
credit where credit's due. I thought he
worked hard, tried to be a threat going
forward as much as he could. It it's not
natural to him, you know, and we've all
talked about wanting attacking fullbacks
and it's right and I think we seen
Merlin Ro when he goes on them overlaps
and runs and the energy that how much it
gets you up the pitch as well, you know,
but he's still sort of learning
learning his trade there. I think
Micheleno is never going to do that, but
he was trying to sort of make a little
bit of a difference. Bran Tweet's
obviously a Rolls-Royce, isn't he? You
know, absolutely superb. So, you know,
like I said, Jordan Pigford was
excellent as well and Tarov. So, I think
T had a couple of W, don't get me wrong,
he had a couple of wobbly moments as
well, but overall they defended, you
know, he defended crosses up against
Mateta and Strand L and the pair of them
dug it out for a clean sheet. We did see
Brennan Johnson for his Premier League
debut of course for Everton. Um and like
I say, Jezebury all had one great ball
and Betto possibly should have just
threw everything at it to get it. I
think he he didn't realize the quality
of the ball till it was a fraction too
late for him. He'd had a shot as well
after a good run that it got blocked.
But David Moyes, I'm sure, will be
absolutely delighted. I've not heard
anything from him after the game yet,
but he'll be absolutely delighted. All
you can do is beat what's in front of
you. And that's what we've done. You
know, the first game of the season, a
massive win to get you up and running.
You know, you you get your first win at
home. That's done. You're up and
running. Everton are currently third in
the Premier League table. They were
second, but Brenford are spanking Spurs
as I record this three. And it should
have been 40. I almost deputy
dreadful at the moment, but um brilliant
win for us. I'm absolutely delighted and
um
you know looking at the sort of man of
the match there's a few I know Tyreek
George got man of the match in the
stadium from the vote I thought he was
excellent I really did but my man of the
match is between two of our midfield
players and that is Harrison Armstrong
and Hayden Hackne and I think I'm going
to give it to Hayden Hackne because it
was his Premier League Davyy but I did
think Armstrong was tremendous as well
19 the middle of the park was
outstanding but I thought hack
you know, David Moyes had talked about
caution and he's, you know, can he sort
of um can he do it, you know, and all
that. It's he's got to settle into it
and got to give him time and all that's
right, but I thought
I just thought he was brilliant today.
Wanted the ball all the time and a real
impressive um impressive Davy. So, he's
my man of the match. Other opinions are
equally as valid. That is it. Let me
know what you think in the comments
