Video summary
David Moyes expressed satisfaction with Everton's 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, describing it as a crucial win that sets a positive tone for the season. While he praised the overall performance, particularly in the second half where contributions came from every player, he noted that the team could have capitalized more effectively on transition opportunities during the first half. Moyes highlighted that Crystal Palace actually created better chances early on, with a significant save by Jordan Pickford preventing an equalizer. He felt that once Kieran Trippier scored his goal just before halftime, the game opened up significantly, allowing Everton to control the flow and create numerous scoring chances that they ultimately converted.
The manager was particularly pleased with the performances of younger players like Harrison and Hayden Hackney, who stepped up admirably despite their relative inexperience in the Premier League. Moyes emphasized that while he does not expect new signings to hit the ground running immediately, both young defenders performed exceptionally well today, proving they can settle quickly into the team's structure. He also commended Barry for his goal and quality cross, noting that strikers are often judged primarily on their goal-scoring output. Looking ahead, Moyes indicated that while he wants more from Barry in terms of buildup play and ball retention, his positive attitude and desire to prove himself have been refreshing assets for the squad.
Significant attention was given to the contributions of senior players who provided vital moments when needed most, especially with key figures like Jimmy Garner and Nardi unavailable. Jordan Pickford's sharp return to form after the World Cup was highlighted as a major factor in securing the win, with his save at nil-nil potentially changing the entire trajectory of the match if missed. Additionally, James Garner made a brief appearance off the bench, providing necessary cover due to the squad's lack of depth, though Moyes clarified that he is not yet fully match-fit for a full start. The manager reiterated that while the team would love to sign another right-back, they are confident in their current options, including Jacob Bruun Larsen and Merlin, who can adapt to different roles within the system.
Moyes concluded by reflecting on the importance of this win for building home form and potentially reaching last year's impressive points total away from home. He acknowledged that ending the season with a strong run of results has been a long-standing challenge for the club, which they have not achieved in the opening game of the season since 2021. The victory provides a significant boost in confidence for a young and inexperienced squad facing difficult challenges early in the campaign. Ultimately, Moyes believes that if the team can maintain this momentum and improve their finishing when chances arise, they will be well-positioned to compete strongly throughout the rest of the season.

>> Hi D, congratulations on the win. What
your thoughts on the on that performance
and a very important win too?
>> Uh I thought I thought there was there
was a good performance uh for lots of
the parts of the game. I thought we uh
we didn't do well enough on the
transition in the first half where we
should have get lots of more chances
from what we done. And when they
transitioned, because of the the two
different systems in the game and the
way it played, when they transitioned, I
thought their chances were better than
ours. Obviously, the goalkeeper makes a
great save. It looks like the center
forward should have probably scored with
the one that hits the post, I think. Uh,
but I thought we had opportunities to
have big chances and I didn't think we
done it as well in the early part of the
first half. But, uh, the goal from
Kieran just before Halime, I thought
that the game sort of and froed a little
bit. It was an incredibly open game I
thought certainly in the first half.
>> Kean seemed to be just his influence was
growing just just before
>> growing. He was one of the ones who
could have done with making a couple of
passes a little bit cleaner and better
when we broke but his goal was uh his
goal was very good and you know I don't
know what he got last year eight or nine
goals for us. So it's a good start for
him. Uh you know he gets off to off to
scoring a goal. David, the um thing that
was so evident in the second half was
like there was contributions from
everyone, Ro um Hayden Hackne, Tyreek
George, everybody seemed to play a part
and if you're going to progress, that's
that's the template you've set today.
>> Yeah, I I mean I've got to say I'm
really pleased with I thought Hayden's
performance was good. I thought Harrison
performed well. I thought Merlin
performed well. So I think a lot of the
ones who are are relatively new to the
team and the ones who I'm probably
expecting to take a bit of time to
settle, you know, breaking them into the
the Premier League in some case, I know
it's not the case with Merlin or with uh
with Tyreek, but it is still they're
very young in their in the sort of
number of games they've got in the
Premier League. Uh you know, Melon went
in as played right back and you know was
doing as well as MD done very well. But
you can't sort of um underestimate the
importance of the confidence that a win
like that will give you today
>> coming coming through something
difficult early on and then
>> absolutely you know for for us uh I
don't think we've won I think you say
for four years I don't think we won in
the opening game of the season
>> 2021
>> so even for us and what we want to build
here and I I said in the press
conference on uh Friday
that you know we're trying to make the
Hill Dickens in a bit more. We're points
total away from home last year was
fantastic. And if if we reach that again
this season, we'll be in a we'll be in
another really good position. We just
need to make sure that we're home form
is is a bit more regular if we can and
get a few more wins here. So to win
today's was was really big for us.
David, you also said in the buildup to
the game that you you'd been struggling
over the summer to get that that kind of
fade out towards the end of the season
out of your system. Has that today done
it?
>> Yeah, it has. But I think that I think
when you've been in it this long, you
know, you I'm always one of these
people, you know, you don't want to miss
a chance in football because when you
miss the chance, it's it, you know,
someone else will take it and quickly.
And uh, you know, for long long times
last year, I was sitting here saying,
you know, we'll get we'll get an outside
chance at Europe and It got very close
at one point. So, but today was today
was a great way to start it off and you
know I I think because of the the likes
of Hayden Hackne coming in Harrison I
mean Harrison's 19 and and played really
well today. Hayden Hackne, I would have
probably ideally sort of built them into
the team. So, which I done with Phil
Jagiela, Leighton Baines, you know, you
could name Bundles who at that time when
we brought the boys in the championship
and I don't think everybody should be
expecting them to come and hit the
ground absolutely running and be, but I
thought Hayden and Harrison done a great
job today.
>> Hi, David. Can I just ask about Barry?
It's obviously the perfect start to the
season for him to get on the score
sheet.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Is that number nine shirt now now his to
kind of
>> maintain his first choice or
>> No, I think he I think look we I think
the the the center forward shared the
goals around last year. Uh I'll
certainly want more from him. He scored
a good goal and look strikers will be
will be uh judged probably on their
goal. So you can walk away and be really
happy with it. I thought you it would be
it'd be wrong not to to mention the
quality of the cross from Ji. You know
what I mean? TO getting in the right
spot was huge and uh and scoring with a
header was was really big for us because
it was an important time in the game and
actually after that part we should have
probably gone on and got it looked like
we were more likely to go and score more
goals for probably the next 10 minutes
after that. Uh and that's a bit I feel
as if we're needing to
uh be better when we've got a chance to
to score more goals. we got better and
and and finished it off maybe a bit
better get another goal.
>> And in terms of his kind of development
this season, what are the what are the
next steps you're looking at? Is it like
more consistency? Is it finding that
kind of ruthless streak?
>> Things like his play. I need his buildup
play to be better. I need him to be able
to retain the ball for us so that we can
play into him more often. Uh I want him
to get in the right spaces, which he did
today for the for the cross. I want him
to be in a position he had a couple
where the ball get played and he didn't
quite deal with with his feet, you know.
Sometimes he's out linking up when he
doesn't need to be out linking up. So I
think there's lots to his game, but I
said last year when you're a young
striker coming in. I think he's come in
with a really really positive attitude
this year as well. He's come back with a
something which has stirred him up a
little bit more as if he's got something
to prove. So today he got his goal and
and he started really well.
>> Hi David. um talked about how well some
of the younger players stepped up today,
but you also had some big moments from
some of the more senior players as well.
Brilliant save from Jordan Pikford in
the first half at nil nil and obviously
the goal from Keen and Dby Hall. Just
how important is it to you that those
senior players do step up to provide
moments like that because they've
changed the games?
>> Yeah, well it was good because you know
we're we're know we've lost a couple of
at the moment you know we've not get
Jimmy Gardner. We've not get Nard. So
we're playing with a really really young
and inexperienced team. the goalkeeper
made a save which could have made a
different know if if they score you know
we might have been happy to chase the
game in a different way and maybe these
younger players aren't ready for that
and not going to be once we get the goal
they were able to play a little bit with
a little bit more comfort was a
brilliant save from Jordan really was so
uh he was and I have to say if I've got
any praise for Jordan you know the
training he's done when he come back
he's looked as sharp as attack I think
he looks lean I think he's kept himself
in good condition or he's got himself
ready. So,
I like I've liked to look at Jordan
since he's come back into training after
the World Cup.
>> It was great to see James Garner back in
the squad as well today. How far is he
off a start, do you think?
>> Well, we wouldn't have we wouldn't have
put him on the bench if we had anything
else only. So, we've tried to get I
don't know maybe 15 20 minutes out of
him today, whatever it was. He's not had
any games. He's not done the preseason,
but we've needed it because we don't
have anybody else at the moment, you
know, and I knew that if we got in the
game like we did, you know, I might have
needed him to cover for for sort of more
more worried about their boys, you know,
they would
tire quickly. Hayden a little bit, but
Harrison's got great legs, so we're not
quite so worried about him and Kieran a
little bit as well. So, we needed him,
but is he ready? No.
>> Thank you.
>> Hi, David. There's been a lot of talk
about right back so far this summer and
you mentioned that James who's played
there quite a lot isn't ready fitwise.
You got Jacob Bryan on the bench as well
but Merlin got the nod. How do you feel
like he did and do you think it's
something that he can develop in to over
the course of the season?
>> Yeah, he's he's keen to he's keen to do
well and shows that he could be a right
back Merlin
and because of that you know we're happy
know he can play other roles for us
pardon the pun but he can play other
other roles which mean that we can play
him further forward.
We can play him in a different way. He's
got a he's got a different sort of level
of athleticism to some of the other boys
in some ways and he's a good footballer
generally and he can score if we get get
him closer to the goal. So, but he's
also doing okay. And I was saying again,
I'm just referencing my press
conference. I was saying that, you know,
we're everybody's talking about a right
back. So, I'm saying well, I hope it's
better than Jacob Ryan. I hope it's
better than than Melon Ro or what
they're offering. And obviously we
always trying to get better than what
we've got in every position to be
truthful. You're always as a manager
you're trying to think and it's you know
it's not that easy to just go and get
yourself better than than how those two
Melon in preseasons played really well.
Certainly deserves the chance to play.
If you weren't able to get another one
over the line, are you confident with
the the players who you've got? I
mentioned obviously James and Jake as
well as Merlin that you'll be able to
survive the
>> Yeah. No, we would we we definitely
would like a like a right back. We
would, but I think that
we we're all concerned about it because
it's more that so for example today
while we're playing Merlin right back, I
couldn't play him in midfield as well.
So today keeps me short of numbers in
midfield and I'm you know I'm having to
balance a little bit of you know what we
want you know uh look we can still play
Jacob Bryan right back. He's proved
certainly against a lot of the quick
boys he's he's really good and and he'll
give us something if we need in that
position but he prefers to be a center
back.
>> Take one more from you.
>> It's only it's only something little.
Are you aware you sent the prime
minister home very happy today? Uh yeah,
I spoke to the prime minister on the
phone, told him, "Lads, there'll be tax
cuts and there'll be you'll be free beer
for everybody." I don't know. No, don't
say that. But he'll not be coming back
again.
But uh no, he he actually somebody put
him on Andy Gray came down into the
office and uh and
his assistant Peter Reed
phoned down. So So yeah.
