Video summary

Everton secured a 1-1 draw against Lille in their final pre-season friendly, marking an enjoyable match that highlighted both promising moments and areas for improvement ahead of the upcoming campaign. The Toffees took control early by taking the lead through El Magia's penalty kick in the first half, but they ultimately conceded a late equalizer from Lille to finish level. Despite the result being acceptable as it was just a friendly exhibition, the manager felt that Everton deserved victory and noted that the team should have capitalized on numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game. The tactical setup featured a balanced side with Melvin and Roel operating effectively up front alongside Tyler Onyango in midfield, while Hackney played deeper to provide stability. Harrison Armstrong was particularly active across the middle of the park, supported by choices like Be Hall behind him and Paddy contributing well defensively. However, the team's inability to convert chances into goals remained a significant issue; for instance, Harrison Armstrong missed a clear chance to double the lead in the second half, and other opportunities were squandered when players failed to tap in easy crosses or penalties that should have been awarded. Several key observations emerged regarding squad depth and player performance, with Tyler Onyango displaying growing confidence by taking on defenders and even executing a nutmeg during his start over George. While Johnson made an impact after coming off the bench, helping create chances for Jake George who forced saves from the Lille goalkeeper, there were concerns about defensive options beyond Michael Keane, James Tarkowski, and Jarrad Branthwaite. The manager emphasized that weaknesses in certain areas of the squad need addressing before next week's match against Palace, where he hinted at potential lineup changes involving Liam Walsh or George starting instead of Onyango depending on how players develop further. Overall, despite missing out on a comfortable win due to missed chances and conceding late, the session provided valuable insights into the team's readiness for the new season which begins next Saturday afternoon. The manager expressed satisfaction with the positives seen in the front line and midfield options while acknowledging that some substitutions need reconsideration as players like Asnew require more consistent playing time or may need to move on if they are only participating for fitness reasons. With confidence building among key figures and clear targets identified, Everton is well-positioned to start their competitive season strongly against Palace next week after learning from this final pre-season encounter.

Welcome to Toffee TV. It is the instant match reaction. Everton have just drawn 1-1 with Lille. And then quite an enjoyable game to be honest. Everton took the lead through El Magia with a penalty in the first half and a literally last kick of the game goal by Lille as it made it a 1-1 draw which Everton deserved to win. I think by the time the end of the game was coming around we had made that many subs. It was very much a B team. We started We started the game well. Makes to see Mel and Roel play on the right hand side with Tyler Onyango in front of him. Thought they both did did well and on the other side obviously El Magia doing what he does. There was a nice balance to the side with Hackney playing deeper. Harrison Armstrong all over the midfield and Choose Be Hall obviously just behind. Paddy who I thought had a decent game as well. And to be fair we you know we should have we should have scored more goals. As I said we took the lead through a penalty but we should have we should have really got more goals and again that's that thing isn't it? We look good going forward but we have to start putting the ball in the back of the net more and there was that was very evident in this game. In the second half Harrison Armstrong should have buried one to make it 2-0. We should have scored when Asnew came on and played an absolutely fantastic ball across the across the the box and no one tapped it in. We probably should have had a second penalty with Choose Be Hall being bundled over in the box. Um but it was 1-1 nil as I said through that El Magia penalty and it was a good one actually. It was interesting actually that Onyango started and George didn't. Thought George did well when he came on but Onyango when he when he played in the first half I thought he done really well. Growing confidence as the game went on taking the defenders on. Nice little nutmeg to get to get on the other side of the defender as well. I thought there's there's definitely there's definitely lots of positives. There's positives in the front line. We saw Johnson in the second half. He made the goalkeeper make a good save. Smash him one in. Good work from Jake George putting the ball into him. And there's definitely There's definitely a lot of positives. I suppose the only negatives is some of the substitution. I think we need another center back. I can't, you know, can't see us can't be having another situation where we have Michael Keane and James Tarkowski again. You know, Jarrad Branthwaite again just cruised through the game without any issues. So, but below them, obviously Jake O'Brien, but I thought I thought, yeah, there are there are very much in, you know, there are very much weaknesses in the squad that I think we have to address, that we have to improve on, which hopefully hopefully we will. Again, we need some passes in when we came when he came on. I know he's probably only playing for fitness, but um he's another one who needs to be moved on. But, I think in the center midfield, I think there's a lot of positives there in uh in the midfield. A lot of options. They've still got N'Gog to go as well. Uh to come back into the side. So, there's there are a lot of a lot of positives. We've only seen a little bit of Brendan Johnson as well. So, positives there. Obviously, it all starts next week for real. But, I think that'll be quite close to the side. It'll just be interesting to see whether it's Jake George starting rather than Tyler Onyango and Liam Walsh I going to the other side. But, I think people will be happy with that. It's the little bit just that that goal at the end costing us. But, we should have been out of sight if they don't fall. We should have been well out of sight. As I said, if everyone had took their chances, they could have been 2-3-4-0 up, wouldn't they? But, they didn't. Liam got a goal back, and it's 1-1. But, fine. It's a friendly. It's the last friendly, and we we move on. So, uh yeah. 1-1. Move on now. Palace next week. And then hopefully we take the three [music] points next week. This is if you want to have a little feel for the day for the for the day. Keep watching, and you'll see a little bit of story of today. >> [music] [music] [applause] >> Everything is coming on nicely. >> He says Johnson and >> Appreciate and make sure your appreciation for Ladies and gentlemen, Have a really good Next Saturday afternoon, look forward to seeing you for the start of a brand new season. >> Mhm.
