Welcome to Toffee TV. It is my three talking points. Everton won Wolverampton Wanders nil in the Carabal Cup tonight at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Trophies scrape through maybe that's an exaggeration. Wolves didn't offer too much, but they were sort of very resilient. Um, and Everton didn't play well, you know, for being, if we're going to be honest, and that's what I'm here to try and be is honest about it. I just, it was a poor performance from Evan. There's no make no mistake about it. We were we look miles off it at times despite controlling it. And uh, but we won the game and and again, it's one of those things, isn't it? It's you can come out well I certainly came out feeling very frustrated because you know you the am I doing? I certainly came out very frustrated but it's about getting through. There's no point coming out and going oh we were fantastic there. What great football we played and losing the game. That would make you feel rubbish as well. So just I was just a bit disappointed, but all that matters is that we're in the next round and and we obviously the draw has been made. We've got Newcastle United at home in the next round. So there is a bit of reward there. It's a it's a tough game, don't get me wrong, but we're at home and that's all you can ask in cup competitions is to be drawn at home. Uh obviously the manager made some changes and we thought he he would do with that and Evan have won the game. You know Charlie Alcaras coming on as a substitute. That's what you do as a sub. You've got to come on and try and affect the game. The manager given whatever it was 15 minutes or so 15 16 minutes. I mean the crowd were getting a little bit annoyed that him and Tyrie George stood ready to come on and and didn't get on for quite some time. But when he did come on the pair of them I think made the difference and Alcarz feeding the you know but onto a ball lovely ball by Tyler Dibling cut inside and put it in the far corner and that was enough to win the game. So we're in the next round and that is all that really matters. But um yeah you know I think we'll we'll need to play a lot better than that on Saturday. That's for sure if we're going to beat Ipsswitch Town. First thing I want to talk about is Tyler Diblin, who for me I think he was better tonight. I I've seen a lot of people I think going overboard about his performance tonight. Personally, there's nothing wrong with that. Let's boost the lad's confidence by all means. I just think I want to see more. I think it's a it's decent start. I mean, I think he was better than he was at Preston in that game. And so that's positive. Um, I think he's looked he's looked much better in preseason. He's looked like an Everton player. He's looked like a player that is comfortable in his own skin in preseason. He was getting better. He's had no time in the Premier League, but like I said, played the Preston. I think he was better tonight. And hopefully the lad will start to get bits and pieces. We're going to need him. He's got to be a viable option. He's got to be. And um, you know, he's a lad who's played in the Premier League before, played 30 odd games for Southampton before we bought him. has played games for Everton. So, this isn't someone who's a 16 year old kid and you're not sure can he do it. He's had a couple of cameo appearances or whatever. This is a lad that had played almost a season. Okay. He was at Southampton. He was probably their best player. He was also a player who had come through one of their own and all that. And Russell Martin loved them and allowed them to do have little responsibility. Just get on the ball and make things happen. And that's great when when you you're getting that, but you're not going to get that in a lot of clubs. You know, you don't even get that in the top club. So, if you're going to be a top player, you don't even get that there. You know, we've heard sort of the praise that I and Jai has got for his performance in the Manchester derby at the weekend. And a lot of that was forged not only at Everton. He really had to do it at Everton, but Borum Wood and Sheffield United and stuff. And he's got himself that move to a Champions League team. for Tyler to sort of keep progressing. He's got to do all the other bits as well, but um it's good to see him. He'll feel brilliant tonight. He should do. You know, he's completed the game. Um he's got the assist for the match winning goal. You know, there was a a vote in the ground and he got man of the match and he should feel good about himself and and hopefully we'll see the benefit of that. I think a couple of times tonight in the first half he faced the defender up, knocked it past him and went, "That's what I want to see." He stood one up with his right foot, which I'm I'm really pleased about because I spoke about that um earlier in the week about seeing Tyreek do it. He certainly at Tottenham at the weekend when Tho Barry's Edith, the goalie, um Tyreek just stood it up with his other foot and I remember Andros Townsen doing it really well for us. um when he was at the club and talking about it, you know, how we he had to really work on his his wrong foot just to so it give a defender a problem if he's going to come inside, especially playing on the right hand side. If you're left footed, which Tyler Biblin is, I think it opens up his whole game if he can go on the outside and then chop the ball up or fire it low across the box. So, it opens up the whole thing for him and it means a defender isn't sure is he going to come inside on that left, is he going to go outside onto the right? I think it just gives the defender some more to worry about. So, I was glad to see him do that. He just didn't take the defender on enough. Second half in particular, everything was safe. Everything was pass it back, hold it, slow us down, pass the ball back. I want to see that. I want to see progressiveness from he's a forward player. His his job is to score goals and create goals. Our wingers are going to have to score goals. It's as simple as that. This team doesn't have loads of goals in it. We're going to find goals hard to come by. they were going to have to nick games um and stay in games and so therefore he has to do more. Jack Gish has to do more. Tyrie George has to do more. Brennan Johnson if he's playing out there will have to do more. So, but I think he looked a lot better and hopefully now I mean the manager should have a little bit of faith in him but hopefully David Moyes will start to see him as a viable option to use. his his task has got to be to be an early sub, to be getting brought on the pitch to try and affect the game. But, you know, he I'm hoping that assist tonight gives him gives him real confidence and and we we get to see the very best of Tyler Dibling. I hope so. Um because for me at the minute, he's a bit behind Tyreek George. I think Tyreek George again when he come on changed the game for me really give us that little bit of electricity that we didn't have and obviously Alcaras did as well and took his goal brilliantly. But, you know, good positive stuff for Tyler Diblin. Um, going on from there, I just talked about the performance and the performance was rubbish as far as I'm concerned tonight. Again, just to reiterate it, all that matters was the win. But I was a bit disappointed with the performance, but what it is is what it's done is it's given us another clean sheet, which I think is important. It's always important for the defense to be nice and solid to get clean sheets. You know, we had one at Tottenham at the weekend, we've had another one tonight. Um, and I think that builds that resilience. But it means the opening six games, we've had three wins and three draws, which you know, in all competitions. So, if we could win on Saturday against Ipsswitch, which is a big game now, then I think that's a really positive start. And when you have got a squad that's as small as ours right now and and we're relying on players trying to stay fit and I know we've got a couple of knocks. It's been proven this week, hasn't he? Obviously Merlin roll missing Tottenham. He's missed tonight and there's I haven't seen anything so far that suggests he may well be back for Saturday. I don't know. Harris Nson wasn't in the squad because he took a knock and hopeful that he'll be fit Saturday. So, it's great to build results and build that resilience and get the players feeling good about themselves. And another opportunity to do that at the weekend, you know, beat Ipsswitch and go into that international break unbeaten, I think, uh, will be a will be a really good start and and that will serve us and help us. It'll it'll put us in goodstead for the rest of the season. So, I'm hoping that we can do that. But, it is about winning games of football. Like I said again, I think I said on my match reaction, if we'd have come out the ground, played fantastically well and lost, we'd be devastated, would we? Um, so you can win games when you when you don't you're not at your best. I don't think I think we've been well well away from being at our best tonight. But I think, you know, the win is more important than anything because a you're in the hat, which we know and and we've as a result of that we've been drawn at home again. So we won. we the job the mission was accomplished so to speak and uh in to the next round and then the final talking point is the need to find more goals in this squad and I I don't know whether I get the feeling that Everton have probably had a little look around of the free transfer market I know Maro Accardi there was talk about him there was talk about Anthony Martial um you know others have been mentioned Karen Benzer I imagine They have been mentioned about possibly coming in, but nothing has happened. And I think you look and think we could do it with another body. We really could. But if Everton have have reached out maybe or or had a look the way they do and decided against it, then we just have to get on with that, don't we? So other players are going to have to find that role in scoring goals. But I do think I still think we look like we don't play in any real creative patterns. We still don't take anywhere near enough shots. That's for sure. And we're going to have to come up with ways to score goals. And I don't know I don't know how Everton solved this because it feels like we we seem to know this problem. ever having scored a lot of goals regularly for see for years now and the only solution seems to be going and buying players who regularly score goals or who are really quick and we don't seem to do either. So we've got good players in wide areas. You know Jack Elish is brilliant but he's a prolific goal scorer. Tyreek George I'm hoping will become a good goal scorer. He scored one already this season. Brennan Johnson, you know, we're going to use him right through the middle, but I suppose he could be an option wide, but hasn't scored goals for a while. And Tyler Dibling hasn't scored. So, our the lads who are there to provide and score aren't heavy goal scorers. Our center forward, despite getting better, and I think he has, I think he's come back looking much better player, looking like a proper striker now. um but has missed chances to score and he's missed another one tonight. So we need we need to know scoring goals and then you look at you look at the your midfield you know we know Jbury Hall is a good you know is a good talisman is a good goal scorer but sorry it is late um but we're going to need him on form we're going to need James Garner chipping in. So the creativity I think for me is a slight concern. I won't lie. Um, and that's why I think those those players are going to have to do the bit. They're going to have to work on it at training. They're going to have to do extra shooting, whatever it takes because we are going to have to learn to grab goals from everywhere because creatively we're not I don't think we're amazing either. We We're too pedestrian at times. I think we got to speed everything we do up. We have got to get more shots and crosses into that penalty area. And really when we get a team feeling like they're under a little bit of pressure, apply the pressure. Don't take the foot off the sort of off the pedal like we did tonight because other teams have found goals even with players who don't aren't regular goal scorers because they've just caused that much chaos in the opposition penalty area. And it is through shots, it's through crosses, it's through long throwins, all of that stuff. Our set pieces, by the way, are atrocious. They're really bad. Then we've got a set piece coach now. So more work on the training ground then because even the last one we had tonight, James Garner just kicked it out, you know, and then looked around as if to go, why is no one run? There was no thought. We had a free kick on the edge of the box that we ended up breaking on us and us having to get a a hurried clearance in the box. It was our free kick up there end of the pitch and we wasted it. So, you know, we've got to be we've got to be better on that as well. But there's some observations for tonight.
