Um, how did you I was I walked out quite frustrated last night and disappointed cuz I thought the level of the game was really poor. >> And I just every year I go with the hope that we'll sit down and we've we've made changes, we'll still be really good. But it always seems to be no matter what happens. It's almost like I've seen this carabal cup game before because it's never it never sort of plays out. That's why Preston was amazing. >> During the game during the game I Googled what is the average round ever can get knocked out of the League Cup. Is it the third? So I was like this is why James asked me on one of the shows and he was like why have we never won this cup? And I was going to walk in today and go that's why we've never won this cup because we always seem at this stage or or even the round before to really struggle not to beat a team but just to look up for the game. Just let's play the football and, you know, beat them and stuff and it was just I think it's just cuz I've seen that game so many times before. We huff and puff and we we have won a lot of them kind of games. We end up getting through, but it's just like, oh, come on lads, please. Cuz it was just slow and yet I've seen James Garner talking about it. you know, we want to win this trophy. And David Moyes, you and I had done the program notes or something talking about, you know, want to win this trophy. >> The two things didn't seem to to sort of match up. Clearly, I haven't wanted to win, but you know, I don't want to go overboard. We won and that's all that matters. But I was I was just a little bit frustrated thinking >> we could have there was moments where we >> like when we scored, we spent the next 15 minutes passing the ball back to keep it instead of going for it. And it was like this this is a bit you know we'll come on to that in a bit but obviously the manager made changes. No Harrison Armstrong he was missing with a slight knock. No Merlin Ro who' obviously missed Tottenham. No such like no information on him either. Hopefully that means he'll be fit for sappy but I don't know but the manager did make changes and know Michael Keane and O'Brien come in. I think everyone sort of sort of expected that Pford was in which was really good. We couldn't change the fullbacks because we haven't got anyone other ones. >> But in midfield obviously Hayden Hackne came in and and there was a staff for Tyler Dibbling which I think we all wanted. Jack Leish minutes and and all that but I thought we started the game so slowly like really put Wolves were for me Wolves were much the better team in the opening 15 minutes just look quicker and move. >> Well maybe maybe that was their plan. Maybe they thought if they could catch it in the first 15 minutes and then stick every man behind the ball, then >> that might be the difference. And it and it could have been um except they just didn't really fashion any chances. They had pace on the way. I thought the lad playing on the left wing was really really quick >> and um >> but they couldn't really fashion any chances. So >> yeah, it always I think you always I think it's always they always take time because it's like like almost like a new team that you haven't really you haven't played in before and it always takes a little bit of time to settle down in these games >> which you just you have to sort of account for don't you? And I think once we started, you know, being sensible with the ball and just keeping the ball, just keeping the ball and getting into the game rather than it be like too quick where you're giving it away all the time. Jackie Elish is fouled. you get a free kick and the players are coming up to get in the box and you think all right let's see what they've got early on whip a ball in that we took a short which ended up eventually losing the ball and having to to stop a counterattack and >> you're like what's going on put it in early and let's see what you know let's see what the junior's got see what they're like at the back and >> you know it is fresh >> I don't understand see for set pieces when you're getting that kind of angle that to me is where you don't do set piece like a magic set piece >> for me where you do like set piece work is corners because they are you know you're going to get three or four corners a game >> and you you know traditionally there's only one way you can do it but you can do it in two ways which is either swing it in that way or swing it in that way >> and that's it. So that's where you do look for an alteration. But I think if you've got a free kick on the edge of the box, you get you get the best the best free kick taker to just whip it in a pace and hope there's a player at the other end of it >> and that's it. >> I don't think that requires any kind of rocket science or special special people like that. Jack Reish had one where he hit it straight at Java Virginia who sh he should have shaved it but he did save it >> you know but Tyler Dibling you know had a couple of little >> moments where he showed that he you know he can he can go on the outside one which is what I've been asking for him to do. not, you know, nothing to over complicate it, but and Alan Irvine actually said it in the uh in the postmatch press conference, like if you do the other thing and go on the outside and put a ball in, then you're putting a seed of doubt in in a defender's mind. Is he is he going does he want to come inside or is he going to go and that gives him that time? And the first one he done it, he went past the lad and stood it up with his right foot, which is what Tyreek did at Tottenham and turn Barry and it's like that opens the whole game up for you then. And then we saw another one where a good bit of pace and he jked along the line and it could have he got a little bit lucky. The leg kicked onto his other foot and it rolled into Virginia's arms. But they were a couple of bright moments where which I think probably did them did his confidence a bit of good to be able to get beyond players. But I wanted to see a little bit more of that in the game >> in the first half particularly. >> I I mean I thought he started slowly and then just started building >> towards you know towards his performance in the second half. I thought >> I thought he I thought what I liked about it was he he did a couple of like you just said he did a couple of different things and that's I think that's what was important >> not just doing the same thing and >> sometimes he gets it in slows it looks like and then he'll give it back and he just like picks his moments and >> I was quite happy the way he built up during the during the game and and got more confidence and >> um >> the one where he pulled it back I thought he was brilliant to nip on the outside and maybe he could have used his right foot to pull it back rather than playing at the outside of his left foot. I don't know. But um it's fallen to their player obviously, but I thought he showed really good signs and as I think he was encouraged maybe by the by the crowd and that's good confidence and >> I thought he done really well and you know grew into the second half. >> We I mean Barry's missed a great our best opportunity of the first half wasn't it? come. We'd had one where a ball come swinging in and didn't quite get a connection and Virginia's pushed it out, but I think the flag went up then in the end. But and then we had a couple in and around the box where we almost got Barry in and he went over looking for a penalty, but don't think it was and Hayden Hackne couldn't get his foot round one when it broke in the sixyd box and he ended up running away from goal with it before going over. But the best chance of the half they thought to Barry it's we've got in. And I think it's Jackie Elish gets in and he puts it back to G. Stands it up. It's a good ball >> and he he does a lot right in terms of he pulls off the defender and the yank, but he's got to ed it down. Yeah, he he has it powerfully enough. It's a brilliant save, but it's at the keeper and and he gave the goalie a chance when he he shouldn't give the goalie a chance, should he? I think he was already celebrating before he scored. It was one of them. You can see with his hands on his head, he's like, "Get it down. Get it on the floor. >> You've got an entire goal." And yet somehow you've hit the goalie. >> Yeah. >> I thought it was I thought it was I thought it was woeful. I really did. I kind of I can't make excuses for that. >> I think from that from that angle got to score. >> You've got to score and and he hasn't and >> he should be walking away with you can people can go he didn't have a great game tonight but he scored whatever. >> That to me is that's where he's got to get so much better. He's got to be the difference maker. Even if he does not, he was okay. He was like pulling wide and a couple of nice little touches, but they're the moments that people will look at and go, "That's a good chance, mate." You he just adds that back because the keeper's running across his goal. If you had it down, the keeper's more likely to do You've seen it where they do the star >> and it's down. >> It's It's It's I know this is a we like a weird comparison, >> but literally that is the difference between him and like a Harland. Harland can be nowhere near the game and anytime he gets a chance like that it goes in the back of the net and he does that >> he does that every game or twice a game and and then whatever and that's why he gets such incredible cuz he never misses those one chances >> and >> he has to start not saying do what what Harland does >> but if he he has to start putting some of these chances in the ones he had look at the ones he had born with >> you know as good a saves as was from the keeper >> he's got to score one of on that one. He's he had to if he just eds that down even sort of like a mis header where it's but it's down. It goes under Virginia cuz Virginia's running back across his goal. He makes it worldly of a save cuz it's it's powerful and he trips it over the bar. But if he heads it down, it's a goal, isn't it? And that should have put us a goal up >> when in at time no changes for the second half. And >> I thought we I thought we started the second half better. Yeah, we were a little bit had a bit more tempo about us and got in a couple of times. Maleno got in. Great little run and Gisha slid him in and if he'd have just took a touch, he he he done it. I think he thought someone was with him. No one was with him and he ends up hitting it straight into the keeper's arms, but he had he could have picked two or three players out, but that was showing when we did run beyond >> they we caused them issues and we did that on a couple of occasions. What did what did you make of obviously Angley mate Laz on the other side cuz he started at Spurs and done the 70 minutes and was in again. I I thought he looked nice and composed on the ball and showed some really nice touches as well. I >> I thought he played really well. I think there was I think one real example of him as a as a defensive player was they played it which ball in the first half and he was a little bit you know he creaked over into sort of like more like a center half position >> and they played a long ball and there was a play behind him and he just you know he just took about four strides backward took it knocked it down to one of our plays and we were away and I just thought that straight away shows he he's a proper right back. >> Yeah. where his roll has been caught out every time that >> he roll and tries to head it doesn't instead of dropping >> and I thought straight away that was like a really good sign that he understands the job he needs to do the positional sense >> and we were away um there was another one where in terms of going the other way >> I think Michael Keane might have had the ball or it might have even been Micheno can't I can't remember and there was a diagonal on and he went >> I don't even remember it and he he made the run the ball never gotten because whoever it was stopped and checked and it was that I don't know that's probably he probably knows that from his Arsenal days of >> the winger's not going to check him the center midfielder's not going to go with him >> and if you just played that ball he's in on goal and I don't think I think that's the difference again about having a a right back who understands playing right back but but also understands the game around him now he might listen we haven't seen early days and I'm not some but I'm just those little signs I think I'm really really positive that he's brought up in a real like in a really good football education that he understands the role but he understands that one ball he was it he was actually if he if the ball had been played he was one-on-one with the goalie >> but we we maybe don't have players who understand that >> he might have cuz that >> yeah he might >> but I thought that that's a really good sign that and then >> he never made it but he had he could just got back into position >> but they're moments aren't they that in some games it's it's tight and then he does something like that you play him in and and you get the goal and it's like you know >> and then I thought in the second half his positional play really helped um Dibblin out because he was given the they've given the wit for Dibble to go on the inside when he needed to and we've been bemoning this for so long about fullbacks >> creating the overlaps or the overloads and I think again it's against Wolves in its early days but I think that really helped >> and also knowing that he's got a fellow behind him a bit of pace as well >> helped them as well. So I I thought I thought he done I thought he done well and again it's he's it's minutes in the bank for him and and let's be honest he's going to be at right back now surely for the rest of the season. It's up to Ro to try to roll once to be considered there. He's going to have to try to get up to speed and do exactly what he's doing isn't he? Um we took Ti Barry off although Tyler Dibling did think he would go and run over and looked a bit shocked when it wasn't him and looked deserved to go well I'm staying on Tiano Barry went off and and obviously be brought on Brennan Johnson into that role he had spoke about it in the week and said that's what we have to do if that's going to be the plan he's got to be brought on at that time in a game >> can he affect it and he nearly did affect it immediately I mean Tyler Dibling >> ever so Well ball played to him. Comes in off the touch and plays an absolute inch perfect. But it's a brilliant run by Johnson. >> And if he just dinks it, it's a great goal, you know, and he listening, but if he dinks it, puts a little bit of height on it, he scored because that's always one where the keeper's got to go with his feet because of the angle. But >> and then in that same move, they clear it and the lads in and then Tyler Dibling when you look at his starting position, the lad's so far ahead of him >> and he catches him unbelievably. That's what answer about want to see it going the other way. I want to see that pace cuz that pace >> it was an unbelievable tackle. It was different play. It was different class. It was brilliant by Dibbling. >> But I want to see that going the other way cuz that's the Dibling I saw a few times >> running at Liverpool and when he was at Southampton and City and that was the one that got me excited when we were getting him. It's like he's going to get it and just drive. We haven't seen that. We've seen a Tyler Dibling slow the game down all the time. Yes, he keeps the ball, but he's got to have effected at the other end. But I just thought that pass was was fant. Brilliant run, great ball. Like I said, if Brennan would have just dked it, it would have been a great goal. >> Yeah, it would have. Um and then the tracking back is superb >> and Moyes should have a look at that. >> We don't we don't problem we we don't get to see that pace because we don't it was like me and Ro last season. We never knew he was fast because we don't put him in those positions to see full full sprinting. But don't you think sometimes for him though he can push it and just go then with that pace? >> Maybe. But he liked running with the ball and he was an instance a little bit later where he picked the ball up and full of confidence at this point >> and um >> he's running towards the south. Um and and yeah, by the second half he was he was very very comfortable, wasn't he? He was like, I've got this. And I think by not taking him off was was was and I don't know whether it was ever in the manager's mind actually, but >> but I'm it was a real boost. You know what was mad though? So I don't know whether they'd sort because he he was he they he had Brennan Johnson ready and he went back to the bench and spoke to must have been Alan Irvine I guess and then he went and spoke to the fella doing the thing. So I don't know whether in that moment he gone actually we'll leave Tyler on tape. He might not. He might have always been staying on. It's a pass he should make and I've seen some people going slightly overboard with the pack, but I get it trying to build them up. But it's a good ball and Charlie does brilliantly. He faints the shoot and comes inside and then does what you want him to do, which is stick it in the corner of the net. And it's a a really good striking and we'd already missed a good chance Michael Ke should have scored for him you'd expect him to hit the target but we got the lead and made up for Charlie cuz he's had to wait hasn't he and he does he does come up with a goal every now and again you know he scored against Mansfield didn't he last year in the car last goal wasn't >> yeah I think so but he he didn't have injuries and things he didn't get you know a lot of game time but he's another one we're going to need him at times cuz look us up but he hasn't started the season brilliantly either, has he?
