Video summary
Everton secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town, extending their impressive unbeaten run across all competitions despite a performance marked by inconsistency and nervousness. The match showcased a notable shift in fan sentiment from the pessimism surrounding transfer deadline day to renewed optimism, even though the team displayed sloppy passing and defensive errors throughout the game. Although the squad is relatively small, it proved capable of competing effectively against a determined opponent, with the relief of avoiding defeat being particularly significant after Ipswich Town were reduced to ten men following a red card. This result serves as a crucial step in Everton's strong start to the season, keeping them joint fifth in the league and maintaining their status as title contenders who can secure vital points even when not playing at their best.
Tactical observations highlighted specific individual contributions that defined the match, particularly George Keane starting over Gary O'Neil in the right-back role and Brennan Johnson scoring his first Premier League goal, though both players missed other clear chances. Special praise was directed toward James Tarkowski, who delivered an exceptional display with 88% passing accuracy and numerous clearances, forming a stable partnership with Branley that anchored the defense. While Jordan Pickford showed inconsistency in his goal-kicking and Michail Antonio's attacking limitations were evident, their solid defensive contributions helped hold firm against the opposition. The hosts also expressed frustration over the disallowed header by Barry Douglas, arguing it should have counted given the goalkeeper's inability to save it regardless of Brennan Johnson's position in front of him.
The game was not without its criticisms, as Jack Harrison was noted for a lack of energy and late substitutions were deemed necessary to maintain intensity. However, Tyler Dibling received high praise for an outstanding cameo performance that successfully energized the fans and provided a spark to the team's play. The hosts acknowledged that while the attack struggled to convert opportunities beyond Johnson's goal, with missed chances also coming from Harrison Armstrong and Juby Hall, the overall effort was commendable given the circumstances. With key injuries like Milan Rikić still affecting the squad but potential returns on the horizon, Everton is well-positioned heading into a busy December-January period. Ultimately, the win is celebrated as a testament to the team's resilience, proving that securing three points despite playing poorly is essential for their continued challenge at the top of the table ahead of the international break.

Welcome to Toffee TV. It is the final
word. Uh, this is going to be a little
bit clunky cuz cuz it's me and James and
there's no one else here. So, I'm doing
the cameras and he's doing the graphics.
So, it's going to be
>> Yeah, we got a lot of jobs today.
>> We got We got not just talking to the
camera. We've actually got we've got
we've got we're doing jobs at the same
time. So, um, Everton unbeaten.
>> Yeah,
>> obviously.
>> Living the dream.
>> We're living the dream. We are We're
We're unbeaten.
>> The, um, we're in all the cup
competitions. We've got, you know, we're
we're invinc with the invincibles.
>> Yeah.
>> Goes on, bro. I mean, what are your
thoughts on on that? I think if you sort
of if you go back to what the end of the
transfer window was like and sort of
what the general vibe in this room in
the comments for that 24-hour stream was
everyone was very down talking about
like you know we haven't got a squad
we're not going to be able to really
compete and you know it's going to be
another struggle another maj
if if you would have said to us you know
we'd be unbeaten we' still be in the
cups which is you know being in the cups
we spoke about this loads on the channel
before saying you know Everton
notoriously haven't really taken this
trophy seriously and you know get
knocked out fairly early and so the fact
we're still in that and we're unbeating
in the Premier League and as much as you
know some of the performance haven't
been great I think last season when some
of the performances went great we were
losing the games or we were drawing them
but at least now we're winning them or
getting draws out of them so me I'm
really happy with how the season
>> no I'm listen don't get I'm sitting here
at the start of a 3-we break you know
couple of weekends free well one of
them's free the other one's not free um
and
everything's sort of rosy in the garden.
when you go back to um when you go back
to transfer deadline day
>> and you think of
you know I know the season we'd already
kicked off into the season but when you
look back on that day and when you look
back at that window and
you you just think about like the doom
and gloom you know it's it's a credit I
think to everybody uh in the playing
staff and the coaching staff and the
manager Yeah,
>> that
we've got to, you know, we've got to
essentially
the end of the month.
>> Yeah. I I know I know it's not fully the
end of but we've got to the we've got to
where we are a few games later without
any real drama and you know okay we've
had a couple of couple of injuries and
but
we I think the biggest I think the
biggest service you can sort of say to
to where we are right now and I know
it's still early on the season and I
know
we've only played five games and plus
couple of cup games but what I would say
is all of the noise about the beacons
has sort of gone away. The noise about
like, you know, the the the anger and
everything is is is gone away and and
this and that. There's time for that to
come back. There'll be a right time for
that. There's, you know, we're we'll go
a match and we're all we're all just
behind the team and and all that sort of
drama that
it's important sometimes that you do
protest and it's important that you make
your voice heard. But I think for the
most part, the fact that we're we're
doing all right is is is keeping that
away. And I think that we do want that
away. We we want we want the owners to
be invested in us. And if they're not,
then we want us to we want them to sell.
But also, if they are trying to sell,
>> it's good that we are winning games and
and as a fan base, we are um we're not
making the wrong noises that might scare
anyway anyone away. So from that point
of view it's it's it's it's been a good
few weeks.
>> Yeah. Well, there was them comments when
different people I know some people
didn't like them, some people did, but
he was talking about how you know when
when when everything happened with the
deadline day and you know Ballan and
whatever whatever that like he seen
though people really turn starting to
like turn towards the team saying we're
going to be in a relegation fight you
know these players aren't good enough
and stuff and he spoke saying like you
know we we we're all still going to
fight here. still going to give it all
and we all still, you know, love playing
forever and,
>> you know, they're motivated by the fact
that they're a small squad. And I think
they sort of shown
they've show sort of shown that that you
shouldn't really be worried that the
players that we do have are good enough
to sort of still fight in the Premier
League and still combat it. And you
know, now other players, you know, we'll
get on to it probably in a bit, but you
know, the last game you seen Alare step
up and get the goal. this game you're
seeing Tyler Dib come on and have a
really good game and sort of change like
sway opinions on him and it's all these
like sort of players who on the outside
they're all now getting their
opportunity properly. They've got to,
haven't they? At the end of the day,
they've got to. But I mean, just talking
about the team, um, obviously
he made uh he left Jack Leish in the
team from the cup game and he and then
and but obviously Brennan Johnson stayed
in the scene with with from obviously
the last Premier League game, George um
moving to the bench. I mean, there are
talk there is there is talk that he was
ill. Yeah. Right. So, I'll I'll I will
caveat it. Um if you if you you know
after the game I was well before the
game I wasn't particularly too happy and
if you watch the match match vlog you'll
have seen that and if you watched at the
end the game I wasn't particularly
happy. If he was ill then fair enough.
>> Yeah
>> then fair enough I sort of understand
it. Um but what were your initial
thoughts when you saw that team? Yeah.
Well, so when we when we've been talking
about I've been saying, you know, I
thought Gish would start now cuz I
think, you know, Moyes comments about
him saying, you know, about like he's
probably better with like a ball at his
feet and stuff like that and actually
playing games better and them training.
So, I thought he would eventually like
make it after the walls game though. He
didn't have the best game, you know, he
started his first game and that was his
time. But I definitely was surprised by
George because he's sort of in like
Evans attack has been like
>> the shining bit of it at the minute. you
know, he's like really kicked on this
year and caused him issues and even when
he came on against Wolves the game
before his first touch like sat down the
Wolves defender. So I thought,
>> you know, he's leveled up and I thought
it was too soon for Tyler Diblin.
>> Yeah.
>> Because you know, he had a good
performance and then I think what Mo is
doing now is right, you know, giving him
>> little bits of time here and there now
as the season goes on and, you know,
eventually probably will get starts. And
then Brennan Johnson's weird because
I don't know he's he's been a bit quiet
I think since he joined and I don't know
I was surprised that he start cuz I just
thought it was just assert that George
would be starting on the right and I
don't know if this about him being it
was right or not.
>> Yeah.
>> But
>> yeah and you know we spoke about him um
potentially being like the backup
striker and for that reason you wouldn't
really expect him to be starting on the
right anymore because he just gives that
a different option. I don't know. I I
was surprised and I felt sort of sorry
for George that he never got the start.
>> Yeah. I think George has been
>> our best player this season like in in
attacking. I think he gives us something
no one else play no other player
officers which is a player who's quick
with the ball. He can all be players can
all be quick off the ball but a player
who's quick with the ball. Um not to
finish the article by any means but a
player who's quick. So I was surprised
by that. I was I was obviously Harrison
Armstrong come back into the team as
well because the manager I think he
feels like he gives us something a
little bit different a little bit
devilment. Um, and it was actually
Harrison Armstrong who created the first
opportunity for Brennon Johnson
>> uh down at the the North Stand and
that was what was that about about five,
six, seven minutes into the game and
>> these are the go the these are the
opportunity. I mean it's a great it's
like that ball we've seen we saw this in
preseason Marrison
>> that sort of like
>> it's a straight ball but he doesn't play
he's like almost facing another way when
he plays it and it was a brilliant ball.
was a nice little move and
>> the touch was lovely as well.
>> Everything all he had to do is hit the
target. Well, and and he he goes with
too much accuracy and and drags it wide
and you're thinking Barry in a great
start for us and a great start for
Brennan Johnson to get himself, you
know, get that first Premier League
goal. We've obviously seen him score in
the Caribel Cup, but just getting that
especially after last week missing the
opportunity at Spurs, it was a it, you
know, for me I I thought it was a really
poor miss. Yeah, I think I think you're
right. I think you know when he came on
against Preston and he got that goal and
assist, it was like it uplifted the fans
a bit. You know, everyone was talking
about how like how good he was and
>> you know having a go Crystal Palace fans
who have you know they spoke very openly
saying and same with Forest and Spurs
that you know he is a confidence player
and once like the fans are behind him he
sort of reaches new levels and that's
how he's done so well before and so I
think you're right. I think first five
minutes if he gets that goal I don't
know it lifts the stadium it lifts him
and then it sort of can he carry it on
can he kick on with it now and like
continue to sort of progress and I I
think you're right I think the touch he
done was like was like a perfect touch
it was like a a lovely little move and
the fact he just put it wide was so
frustrating and especially you know one
of his strengths is his finishing and
you know the the Spurs game missing that
one and missing this it's sort of adding
up but
>> yeah it's just it is disappointing
Not really.
>> No, I mean it's it would have settled. I
mean, it it didn't it didn't mean too
much cuz we we it didn't take us that
long to score the goal cuz we'd started
brightly and moving it around well and
and
>> you know, I think every everyone was
disappointed from that. And the best
thing you can do when you have that kind
of disappointment is is get a goal. It
didn't take us that long to get to get
us a goal. Um
ball falls to ball falls to Taki who who
smashes one towards the goal and there
we see Tel Barry adjust his body.
>> Yeah,
>> I think that's all you can say. That's
give him the benefit of the doubt. Just
his body. See, you know, catch it on the
chest and it goes into the corner and
>> give us that lead and it's a again he
hasn't scored
in the Premier League since the first
game of the season. So, it's it was good
for him that they're the ones you need.
They're the ones that we don't you know
you take your you take buy your ticket
to certainly and it hits and goes in and
that's exactly what we needed.
>> Yeah. I think I think this season you
know I was quite critical about it last
season. I think similarly like Betto I
think the situation that they were in
just made it really frustrating for
people like watching it and
>> you know seeing him coming off the 70s
and Betto coming on or vice versa. It
was like it I don't know they were
coming on and need them were really like
impacting the game. So people were
getting annoyed and myself included. But
I think this season now that he's got
sort of the certainty that he's like the
number one striker now I think his game
has leveled up a bit and you know he
obviously started the season off well
scoring four goals or whatever in the
first two or three
>> and then it has quieted down but I think
just his overall players improved like
way more than what it was last season.
you know, things like his touch, you
know, how he use his body, like his
strength, stuff and the runs he's making
and the fact that he is getting into the
right positions. I think if you go on
like stats websites, he's the he's the
>> he's got the highest expected goals in
the league, which
>> I know he he hasn't he hasn't scored
them. He's only scored two goals, but
the fact he's getting in the positions
and the fact,
>> you know, he is getting a high XG is,
you know, the Brenford spoke about Beto
saying about,
>> you know, it's not necessarily about the
quality, but it's the situations they're
getting themselves into and he keeps
getting himself in enough situations,
then eventually he will start scoring.
So, I think that's the biggest company
you can give to Barry is that his whole
his whole game, not just scoring, has
leveled up and given him these
opportunities. Let's have a look at the
goal. You've got the stills there
and obviously you can see balls about to
drop to Taki.
>> Yeah. Drops through and volleys it as a
volley. I mean it's a good if from T be
fair and it does look like it's going
into that corner to be fair. The
goalkeeper's got a good view of it
though.
>> Um which is another thing for the
goalie. H it does look like it's going
in but but it it is quite close to the
goalkeeper. So just coming up to Barry
now
and obviously just that touch
>> sort of shifts his body.
>> Yeah, you can see him leaning back,
can't you?
>> Like he's chesting it towards the other
corner.
>> Like if he was trying to get out the way
would have got out the way, but he's
not. He's he's moving his body. Um
>> it's not a deflection. It's not like
caught his hip. It's like he he's made
the movement towards the ball to put it
to the other corner and it gets to this
one.
>> Goes past the keeper. It's goal. There
you go.
One nil. And everyone, first thing I did
is I did look straight at the lines when
So me and the the fell I was sitting
next to, we both stood up and it was
like cuz it
>> I don't know. It was a weird
celebration, wasn't it? Because it was
like a bit iffy. And I looked at the
linesman and no one really everyone was
looking around. No one really knew where
to like I don't know give into it. But
yeah. No, I looked at the lines when I
seen the lines pointed flag down as in
like it's a goal. Um, so I had no I had
no like once because I thought if this
if there's any chance this is offside
the line there's no way the line
couldn't have seen it. Yeah
>> cuz it was the way the way obviously how
far the ball had traveled. So I just
think
>> we need you need something like that in
a game like that and then obviously
going one but what followed then just
really disappointed me. I I just thought
we were
>> Yeah.
>> I thought we were um
we were really sloppy. Like that's the
best description of it. Like I don't
think I switch played amazing. I
thought, don't get me wrong, I thought I
thought I switch did all right. I
thought the way he played, he played
like a proper 4-33 and within Shishko
playing dropping into like the pocket.
Um,
>> yeah,
>> I thought that he was no one really knew
how to who to pick up and I thought that
was causing us trouble. But the thing
that was causing us the most trouble was
we couldn't pass the ball five yards to
each other. And it was it was so
incredibly frustrating. You're one n up
against a newly promoted team.
You've got better players and your your
you you know your best play your best
players Greishes KDH
G
>> none of them can like none of them can
string three passes together to get us
up the pitch. and it it just led to a a
real frustrating um 25 minutes where you
you know they grew in confidence and I
think that's the worst thing you can
that's the worst thing you can offer an
opposition team especially one that
>> uh has come up who were a little bit
actually are a little bit they were a
little bit fearless to be fair no one's
like I know they went to United a few
weeks ago and they got a bit of a n
there but obviously they've done well
since going to Palace last week getting
the win and I think that's the worst
thing we would have done.
>> Yeah, it it just it was weird because as
you said, we had the Bren John chant and
not long after we scored the goal and it
was like I think you're right. I think
that there was a lot of like nice play
being done by Everton and it just sort
of went off the cliff right away and it
was dead sloppy and you know they just
kept making the same mistakes which was
even more frustrating. And I thought for
the most part the midfield three, you
know, in the match preview me and B
spoke with them. We were talking about
how good we thought the midfield was.
But I thought any of them three you
could have taken off. I thought they
were all really sloppy and you know
miles off what they have been usually
>> and likewise with the wingers I don't
really think they were like too
inventive and Jack wasn't really Jack
Greish even for the whole game I thought
and
>> yeah it just it was really frustrating
and I thought you know in that first
half um it switch did have a few chances
too
>> and um yeah it it was a bit I don't know
just you think a promoter team you know
it's the last one before the
international break and you know we've
done so [snorts] well before
>> that you know Everton would have had a
bit more about it but
>> yeah it just felt really I don't know
>> do you think that that fed into like the
anxiety around the ground of like which
most of it coming to the second half but
you think like because it was coming up
to that coming up to a break and you so
close to having a really good start to
the season and hopefully pick you're
going to go and get another win think
that led to that frustration of like we
should be beating these like but no
one's got a god-given right to beat
anyone I totally understand that. But
it's like we should be beating these and
>> we're making it so hard on ourselves to
to you know to we're given these
opportunities and it's just it didn't
need to happen and that was the mad
thing.
>> Yeah. I think we if you combine it as
well with like the full week of the
Wolves game
>> but Wolves it was the exact same
situation. It's like it's like the
toothless dogs of approaching is that
like we keep doing everything like it
but that the final bit we can never just
get it right
>> and I think having the Wolves game in
this one back to back where it is too
you know as much as as done well it's
like two inferior teams where we should
sort of be in control on the front foot
>> the fact we weren't really in control in
either of them and you know we were dead
sloppy and whatever it it sort of
>> and as I said they grew in confidence
and they had a couple of big moments
they
I think it was well the first one they
had was the corner where Pigford has
gone he's gone out of his goal and I
don't like that when goalie's chased the
ball he's gone out for the and he's gone
to punch it and it's come led fell
straight to there lad who's smashed it
back in and to be fair Pford's made a
brilliant save and pushed it w another
corner but I don't know why Pigford
thought he needed to
>> we had a defender there who could have
dealt with it but he sort of added to
the chaos of it um that was the first
one and the second one just before
Halime is a ball that's come in. Ti's
left it thinking it's just going to
drift out aimlessly and Maitlin Niles
and Brennan Johnson have completely
switched off.
>> Yeah.
>> Leaving Davis who's we've seen him score
goals from that angle against Manchester
United a couple weeks ago. He's had a
good start to the seasoning. He was
involved in all three goals last week
for Palace.
>> Um has drifted into the back post and
now he hasn't hit the target. Don't get
me, don't get me wrong, he might even if
he had, he might not have beat Pigford,
but how he drifted in and and managed to
get that shot off and he put it wide
like even he looked surprised that he
was allowed that and that was just that
just those giving up chances like that
just so uncharacteristic.
>> Yeah, I think I think you're right. I
think
>> it was just sort of the thing of the
whole day really. It's just
>> just that like sloppiness and just not
really looking focused. Yeah, I think it
was
we've seen it in the early part of the
season when Ro was playing there and you
could sort of put it down to, you know,
not being familiar with position, but I
think the fact now that like
with with a few more games into the
season and mistakes, you can't really
just be giving them away because, you
know, if it was a better team than like
switch, you know, Evan Ced and then
whole performance that follows it and
yeah, it just it sort of fills the whole
day. You know, I'm sure we're going to
more with the second half, but it's just
that sloppiness that just followed us
around. We did have an opportunity
ourselves to double the lead. It was a
really good ball in by Maitlin now
showing um showing his his obviously
attacking ability going forward. But to
be honest, Barry's on completely on his
own in the box. Mile puts it right on
his head.
>> And when you look at it, like when you
look at it from close up, it's you know
Barry's in the box, but when they pull
the camera back, Barry's got no one
around him. And I don't know whether he
gets caught in two minds. don't know
whether he fully understands where he
is,
>> but he obviously tries to cut it back.
>> Yeah.
>> And his positioning doesn't really allow
him to cut it back because if he if he
cuts it back, it goes exactly where he's
where it's where it ends up, which is
out.
>> I mean, so I don't know whether he could
have if he'd stayed still and just gone
back across goal.
>> But he had so much time. He probably
could have even hook it down on his
chest maybe. But again, it's another for
him. It's another big opportunity. We
saw the one um couple of weeks ago that
he put over
>> um that he that he put the header that
he put over against Man was against
Manchester United
in the first half from a similar
position, but he's put it over and
you're thinking someone someone with
that aerial ability should be doing a
little bit better on that.
>> Yeah. Yeah. cuz obviously when he signed
for Evan that was like one of the big
things is that like in the air he's
unbelievable and stuff and that's what's
frustrating you know talking about him
before that like the xG sort of done it.
It's like,
>> you know, he he'll miss chances like
that where he has loads of times, but
then he'll get ones like the goal, the
first goal he scored where like
>> it comes on in off him or, you know,
you've seen it like last season was
Newcastle he scored falling over and
stuff. It's like it's them moments and
>> I think you've just right now, you know,
you've just got to sort of take it where
at least he's getting in the right
positions and at least, you know,
hopefully, you know, he'll turn that
round and he will get a bit more
confidence and start converting them.
And I think you you see sort of the
second goal and how amazing he does for
that one
>> and you hope that you know these chances
where he is getting these eders he'll
eventually start finishing like he does
with the the second goal.
>> But yeah it is frustrating but hopefully
just sort of something he grows out of.
>> Yeah it's just it's just getting better
isn't he's just got to he's just got to
get just got to be a little bit better.
We got into halftime. There was a bit of
bit of a sigh of relief because as I
said that Davis effort was just on
Halime and you know that was one of them
where you know come on what you know the
whole crowd is like what are you doing
and people are looking around and
pointing fingers.
>> We got in at time there was a relief
that it was that it was that it was 1
nil. We hadn't played particularly well
even though we'd had good chance even
though even though it was just I just
thought the way they played I I like the
way they played with like a proper 433
but it felt like every time
they needed to defend
they got the men back and back but when
they attacked they attacked in like
almost like that front three as that
prong went together and I I did enjoy
you know obviously they haven't got the
quality but we got in at half time and
thinking Right. Get in. Get in there.
Make the adjustments. Sort out whatever
the issues are. You know, everyone needs
to kick up the ass because it's been
that kind of hard. Stupid
>> stupid passes, things not coming off,
>> which it happens. That happens. It's
football. So, and and and it does happen
of like if it's one or two, it becomes
three or four and then five or six. It
was one of those halfs.
We've come out second half and almost
instantly we've allowed in the Cisco
more space to run and I think he ends up
it they end up in our box and he gets a
shot off and I think Pigford's got to
make a good save down to his right to
keep it one nil and you're just like oh
my god what did did did nothing stick
nothing that got told at our time stick
>> yeah I know in Cisco as well you know
he's sort of shown ever before what what
he's like capable of and you know me he
was the player me and B sort of pinpoint
in the preview you you know he's still
only 22 which is mental cuz it seems
like he's been around for ages but yeah
it's just
because of how like big sort of Evans
team is and whatever with like the
center offs and you know how many goals
you see like with like deflection and
stuff going for everything he was like
my main worry that like he would get on
the edge of the boxing and you know
going off at Tar Bran to whatever and
it's just
>> there was the the occasion with like
Bran giving the ball away and like
coming in it's like he was a threat
throughout the whole game and you know
you combine it with like Fatimu who was
on the left who eventually get sent off
and stuff like that.
>> Them two together it was just it was
unnerving and for them to get it right
away into the second half I said I
thought you know maybe the tempo would
go a bit down. It was
>> was worrying.
>> No it was but we all felt like those
worries had had been had subsided when
Everton got a corner. Um
>> great ball in
>> Yeah. from Jbury Hall and Barry just
rises and it's an absolutely
fantastic header. We'll have a look. We
can see the still there. Obviously,
everyone's everyone's seen it so many
times, but it's a great ball in
Barry's just pulled off, got into the
space
and he's headed it right into the
corner.
>> See, even if you look in this photo,
look how much just spaces between like
the keeper.
>> Yeah. Like Ben Johnson isn't blocking
anything for him to see it right now.
>> Well,
>> it goes it goes right in. The goalie the
goalie couldn't have done anything about
that. It's so everyone's everyone's
everyone's celebrated. We've had the
full celebration
and I'm looking at the screen at the
goal and at the honest it was like the
last literally the last thing they
showed on this on on it was Bren Johnson
standing in front of the goalkeeper and
I was like, "Oh no."
>> Yeah. like literally before the referee
even made a sign and
I was like, "Oh no."
>> Yeah.
>> And then the referee just went like that
and I thought he's going to disallow
this
and there was I think everyone was a
little bit beused why why it would be
disallowed. Um but I just thought
straight away he's going to disallow
this.
obviously goes over,
he uh looks at it and then the you know
the mic comes out and but when you when
you look at it when when you when you
when you got stills or not this is just
common sense isn't it and I think this
is the difference between football
players football fans people in football
and referees is that to a referee
I mean don't get me wrong this rule
isn't black and white but to a referee
And certainly following on from what
happened last week at the at the
Manchester derby.
>> There is no gray area in this
>> this week is that he's standing in front
of the goalkeeper that they there was I
mean they're saying that he touched the
goalie but it's more like the goalie
touches him
>> and because of that the goal should be
disallowed where football people look at
it and say well
remove Bren Johnson from that.
>> Yeah.
>> And what's the goalkeeper going to do?
The goalkeeper is taller than him
anyway, so he can see the ball.
>> Yeah,
>> he can he can see the ball go in. He
can't save it. He can't He hasn't been
rugby tackled out the way. Hasn't been
pushed out the way.
>> There's not a chance on earth anyone
saves that ball. It's such a good
header.
>> Yeah.
>> And we've been denied a good goal. Uh
Barry's been denied a good goal.
>> And a game that has been very very nervy
up to that point.
>> Yeah. is made
not only extra nervy but there's a
there's a the frustration now has has
gone a different way. [clears throat]
>> Yeah. I think it so just before that it
was like everyone under loads of
pressure and then obviously we scored
the goal and it felt like it came out of
nowhere and that like everything sort of
was diffused right away
>> you know
just because of how good the ed was it
just it was it was a nice atmosphere and
then I I didn't see it at the time when
I was watching it like the keeper being
in front of it and the VR course seemed
like it came out of nowhere but as you
said once it was like sort in front of
the keeper you knew that especially like
the Man United stuff and all that that
you know the keeper I mean the refere
you, you know, too scared to make a
mistake. So, they were going to disallow
it anyway. But
>> I think you're right. I think you look
at where the ball goes and where the
keeper stood and he's like reaches the
spot anyway. It's not like he makes a
move forward and it's not like Bren
Johnson affects the keeper at all.
>> No.
>> And it just it just seems so backwards
and I feel like it's one of them if it
is subjective. You look at as you said,
if Bren Johnson's not there, how's the
the match affecting and it doesn't
change anything about what happens to
the keeper. And I thought what was most
notable was when the the goal initially
went to V I was none of their players
seemed to like go up to the ref and be
like can you check this or whatever or
the keeper never said anything about it.
So I think that's a huge tell that if
the keeper doesn't feel like it was a a
file or that he you know he was offside
or whatever then then
>> I just don't I just don't understand it.
And it just seems like every week
there's like a new sort of thing where
until it's like Man United or someone
will really properly be addressed or
whatever. No, there's no common sense
applied. Like literally no common sense.
Like the mad thing is if that goes in on
Wednesday, that's a goal.
>> There's no V and everybody's happy. And
no one I don't think ever comes out
afterwards and queries that.
>> They look at it from the point of view
of
>> would the goalkeeper have saved it and
he wouldn't have saved it. And I think
that's that's the only question you need
to ask yourself is would he have saved
it? Yeah.
>> Um
>> and it it was a it was it was poor. It
was poor. You said before that we were
we were under a little bit of pressure.
We we we were we couldn't get ourselves
going. Jack Jackish I I was like you've
got to take him off because he
>> just didn't want to run at all.
>> He didn't want to run, did he? Like like
I know it wasn't it wasn't a case of
like he started the game and and I you
know I told me starting 11 and I said
start him. But obviously it's all down
to fitness isn't it's all down to how
fit you are. But he's it's a it's an
hour into the game and he's getting to
he's he's he's playing left back. I know
that's what there was occasions where
like we were countering or whatever and
it was be like
>> he's shouting at Michelenko to make the
run while he's like slowly walking back
and it was like
>> I understand why I don't know it's it's
a one the lead and David Moyes might be
inclined to keep him on just because
doesn't lose the ball keeps the ball up
and you know everyone can get up then
>> but I felt like at that moment where
he's shouting at Michelango of all
people to get forward and he's staying
back and it's it's like he doesn't want
to run at all anymore when you have got
you know a tidy George on the bench who
similarly can you know cause a bit chaos
and you know has got that piece. It just
felt I don't know it felt a bit backward
>> and the mad thing is he left him on for
another 20 minutes.
>> Yeah.
>> Like I thought as just I know we're
going to subs a bit more but all the
subs could have been on way earlier.
weird that no one was playing
particularly well.
>> No one was playing well and but he sent
out the subs quite early
>> because he was obviously frustrated
>> and honestly after 50 50 minutes after
55 minutes we should have made
>> like at least two subs. I should have
brought two wide men on because Brennan
Johnson and and um and Greish were not
doing enough for me um for one reason or
another.
And it was it was actually Brennan
Johnson who went off first and actually
it was probably just after our best bit
of play of the second half. It started
with Greed. I think he put it into into
Jewsby Hall and then Jewsby Hall put a
ball across and Bren Johnson slid in
there and and and has put it off target
and then Penny Johnson straight off and
he obviously brought
>> really frustrated didn't he? Yeah, he
brought Tyler Diblin on at that stage
and um I mean before we get on to Tyler
Dibbon cuz but three minute literally
sorry a minute after Tyler Dibbon comes
on they get a player sent off um fat
through for what was clearly when you
watch it again it's it's a terrible bit
of stimulation you know it's an awful
dive he does that thing where he tries
to he hooks the he hooks the player's
leg and then does the the like the the
jump.
>> Yeah.
>> And luckily the I mean you can say what
you want with the referee, but at least
the referee's caught it. I mean, right
in front of him, he hadn't have done
something about it.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh and they've gone down to 10 men. And
again, it's that relief.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Of Well, at least if we're not two nil
up, at least they're down to 10 men
because I honestly did I know this might
sound negative, but I
>> I just thought these are going to score
at some point. and I and and can we
react if they do score? Um so that that
that was just pure stupidity, wasn't it?
From him from him
>> felt like the pressure was really
mounting up, you know, the stadium was
feeling nervous and like
>> you know the fact that the goal got
disallowed and stuff. It was like people
getting on each other's like backs and
stuff and I I was thinking the same. I
was like I was I was worried that this
and I was saying you know swap the
wingers and a midfielder at least should
be coming off for Hackne or whatever.
And then the fat we would to do that I
don't know it sort of like burst their
bubble a bit and everyone everyone just
felt a bit more at ease and then I
thought you know having to kick on then
you know we would sort of take control
of the game and apply a bit more
pressure obviously didn't really happen
but I think you're right I think it was
so silly from Fatu just purely the fact
of
>> they were they were sort of in control
there and the pressure was all on Evan
>> we were making like when you know you
can look at it both ways there the stats
don't necessarily back up that they
they were like doing anything impressive
or anything like that. But obviously
when you're in a stadium
>> Yeah.
>> And you know there's a general feeling
around of anxiety cuz people just want
to get the game one.
>> We know we're playing poorly. There's
some kind games you can't snap out of
playing poorly. We know we know we're
playing poorly
>> and all we want to do is just do the
basic things but we couldn't do the
basic. That's what I'm saying about like
Gish. the manager's looking at and he's
going, "Well, every time he gets the
ball, he we slow it down and we make
something happen." And I get that, but
then there's the other side of of like,
"Well, if you put George on, George can
leg these."
>> But I suppose it does come down to that
thing of, well, if George is if George
isn't fit
and he's only got 10 minutes in in him,
then you've got to be careful what you
do. And the manager didn't look to be
too worried about it, which I mean
that's just classic David Boys when it
comes to making subs. But he brought
Tyler Dibblin on and if there was a
bright spot again from this game, it was
Tyler Dibb and I thought I thought he
was so positive from the start. He
carried on from where he left off on on
Wednesday night and had his best
performance in an Everton shirt in the
Premier League by far. He was, you know,
he was getting on the ball. He was
slowing it down. He was speeding it up.
His footwork was really, really good. He
looked to go one way and go the other.
He's so deceiving in the way he plays.
He's got that little bit of quickness in
him when he needs to,
>> you know, at the shot the keeper saved.
Um,
set up a couple as well. But I think the
most important thing was he gets he gets
fans excited. fans fans were like we
talked about we talked about in Jai and
we talked about why people go to
football and if you if you're going to
be like an average team at least that be
an average team with a with a couple of
players who get you on the edgy sheet
now we know Gish is one of them and we
know he's not fit at the moment
>> and we know probably George is a
different kind of version of that but
now with the emergence of Dib
I think we're all starting to feel even
though it's only small sample size we're
all starting feel there's a player
there, there's a player who can start
games, come off the bench and as long as
that lab believes in himself and believe
and understands what the manager wants
from him, then we've got we've got a
real player there.
>> Yeah, I think that sort of cameo and I
think the the Wolves game as well, he
had he had a few moments, but I think
the cameo when he came on for me, he was
besides maybe at Tarowki, he's probably
Evan's best player of the whole game.
>> I thought that the few chances he did
have, he looked a lot more like
clinical. Yeah. Yeah, you going for the
shots, beating his man. And it was sort
of it was weird towards the end of it
because he had beat that the fullback so
many times. I was confident that when he
get he beat him again and like make a
chance for himself and you know he made
the keeper have a make a amazing save
which I gutted for him that never went
in because I think he did deserve a
goal. And I think what for me it's it's
definitely changed now is that you know
me and Baz speaking in the match preview
saying you know he hasn't really had the
reputation of he can come on and change
a game for evidence since he joins us.
>> Yeah.
>> And when he has came on he's always you
know it's things like body language but
like how he how he plays the game you
know passing and not really like having
his head up and not making the runs. But
I think this game when he came on, you
know, he's shown that, you know, if we
are if it is the 70th or 80th minute and
you know, you need someone to come on
make a few chances or even just take the
shots themselves,
>> he can be the one to step up to do it
now. I think that's so different to what
we've been used to with Tyler Dibling
and why he probably hasn't had the
chances that
>> he probably should have
>> and so it's only positive for me now
that he can and you know David Murray
saying stuff like something along
smiling talking about him now and stuff
like you know he's he's firmly in his
mind too. So hopefully this is like the
next level now where he can kick on and
we can see why we paid that 40 million
for him.
>> Yeah, absolutely. And
his uh stock has gone up so much this
week. Um because we have had two home
games and people have got to see him in
the flesh and I think
>> that's what gets Evertonians excited is
having a player like that. You know, we
we we appreciate working like players,
and we know we're not going to be
blessed with lots and lots of players
who are who are
amazing, but you've got that. I mean,
look look how much people loved enjoy.
Look, you know, people people idolized
them, adored them. Kids got his name on
the back of the shirt
because of those reasons. That's all we
want. We just want players. And you
know, he got he had three shots and as
you mentioned, one the goalie makes a
great save. Maybe it's a side net with
another one. I I just thought he was so
positive, but everything he did led to
something. And I think that was the
other thing that's really important is
like everything he did was and he should
have had like he he got dragged down.
the lad holder of a shirt and he got
dragged down and it's like it should
have been a foul to us in a really in a
really good area and yet the referee's
completely missed it and they've gone up
the other end of the pitch and nearly
created something from would have been
an absolute travesty that um but I did
love that positivity and of him doing
that and obviously George come on
towards the end and uh he give us
something a little bit different as well
and
there's there's so many even even in
like a not a great game There's so many
there are positives to to call upon. But
I I you know I go back to what
>> if George is fit I'm disappointed that
him and George didn't come on at the
same time to have a like to change
things up. But but but if he but if he
wasn't fit if he was ill because you can
never never know how players react. You
know when players are injured what they
can and can't do. When players are ill
it's different. You don't know how how
their body is going to react. So if he
if he got 10 minutes because he was ill
and fair enough I can't you know if
that's if that's what it is that's what
it is. Um but I think what sometimes you
need the momentum changed in a game now
obviously if a goal goes in or a player
gets sent off. Now of course he comes on
when they're down to 10 men but they
just brought a couple of like big lads
on up front and just start to kick the
goalkeeper kicking the ball out of their
hands. You won't have seen much of that
in your lifetime. That used to just be
what everybody did. That was the number
one way of scoring goals. But they just
started going long. And to be fair, we
did we did deal with most of it. They
did get a couple of opportunities which
we we we dealt with. But they just
started going long and it was a
different way. But towards the end,
>> you didn't wouldn't have realized they
had 10 men because again, it's that
nervousness of just not getting that
second goal. And we did have big chances
and it's the and that nervousness comes
because you don't score from those big
chances. Harrison Armstrong does the big
one for me where it's him and Juj
running through
>> and I don't know if he just like sees
his name in like the lights or whatever
but JB's just right there. He can just
lay it off
>> and he takes the shot and it's just it's
a poor it's very very poor.
>> It's poor isn't it? I mean Harrison
again he he was sloppy at times but then
again was done really well at times.
That's fair enough. He's a young he's a
young lad and out of the three
midfielders I thought he was probably
the best out of the three. I thought
Ghana and JB Hall were were quite poor
all day, but that is one where you Yeah.
If you care bottom corner, then you can
go, "Wow, but
>> you miss it.
>> If you miss it,
>> he's right there."
>> And we've seen him miss other chances
this season. Juby Hall is in a brilliant
position. He's, you know, you slip him
in and he'll score from there. Even if
he's having a bad game or not, I expect
Juby Hall to score from there. And
you've made it 2-0 and you've completely
put them to bed because don't forget,
seven minutes go up as well and
everyone's like, "Oh, fuck." you know,
cuz it is it's that builtup anxiety that
you've mentioned numerous times. I
appreciate that.
>> That builtup anxiet anxiety of
[laughter]
>> if we win this game three weeks, great
position. This is a game we should be
winning.
>> We haven't played well, but we can walk
away and say we've won the game and
everyone's happy. And everyone knows
that in their head. Everyone knows that.
Yeah. And it's just get the game won.
Seven minutes. All it takes is a dodgy
set piece. Ball flicks off someone's
head, ball back, whatever it is, that's
all it takes to score a goal.
>> But luckily enough, we got through it
and the defense, let's be honest, the
defense this season, you know, the clean
sheets have been brilliant. And in James
Takoski, it's
he I think he's rated actually the best
defender in the entire Premier League at
the moment. So, let's just have a look
at his numbers.
So obviously you got an assist in the
game. Nice.
>> Fair play.
>> 80%
>> 88%
>> 88%. Sorry to my eyes.
>> You want me to read?
>> Go on, you read them.
>> 88% passing, seven clearances, three
header clearances, four interceptions,
five recoveries. He won four out of
four. So 100% of his grounds, won five
out of six of his aerial drills, only
losing one. And obviously his heat map's
there.
So
I think um you know a lot of people had
to go with him sort of at the start of
the season. I think he was a bit iffy
you know like the Palace game that like
first half an hour you know he's he's a
bit sloppy but I think since then
in all all of the games really he sort
of really built on built on it and
>> there's the few things people having a
go at. He's definitely
>> he does have his moments and I think he
had a moment I think he had a moment in
this game. Um which yeah I mean
Brandweight early on was dodgy on the
ball givea and I think there was there
was I think there was definitely one and
you could even look at taki maybe for I
mean don't get me wrong I don't think it
was his fault but
>> the one where Davis nearly scores should
you know should he just deal with it you
know but then again it's the trust of
your defenders you you expect your
defenders to be maring behind you you
can't you can't let you've got to have
trust in your defenders but this is What
this is what we know about him is that
he's a him next to Jared are like it's
like silk and silk and steel, isn't it?
It's like you know what you're getting
from Taki and as long as he's fit um and
I know people were desperate desperate
for Jake. Oh, it's got to be Jake.
Taki's finished. But that time will
come.
>> Yeah.
>> Now, will it come quick enough for Jake
O'Brien? I don't know. But this Taki
gives you this is what he gives you.
This is what why you know he's in my
start 11 every single week because
he is just an absolute solid defender.
He's you know people moaned when he when
when he was given the captaincy. Of
course he was going to give be given the
captaincy because he is a he is a
leader. He leads by example. Yeah. And
you've got to get the most I in my
opinion you've got to get the most out
of those players while you whilst you
can. There'll be a moment where Taki
starts dropping. I don't believe that
moment is yet. I think it will obviously
come, but I don't think that that
moment. And I think every week he
illustrates because Jake could come in
and Jake could have the odd mistake in
him. But I think the thing about Tark is
is that he's got that experience of how
he deals with those mistakes and doesn't
let it worry him. And you know, again,
yeah,
>> he's not someone that is always happy to
have the ball at his feet when he's
under pressure. And I thought they
pressed us really well because I
actually thought that was one of the
things we were bad at is we couldn't get
out of their press. We we we struggled
to break down their press. We kept on
going into like the corners with the
defenders and then not switching the
ball. But Tak's had a good season so
far. But he has had the odd mistake, but
I think he's had a good season so far.
Yeah, I think a big part of it as well
is the fact that he paired up with
Branley. I think, you know, a lot of
last season it was Michael Keane and,
you know, I think that I don't know
they're very similar in like the the
ways that they are and like the speed
they play at that I don't think it was
good for either of them playing with
each other. And so now I think that he's
got Branweight back who I think they
complement each other quite nicely.
>> You know, you've seen them sort of step
back up again. And um obviously Brantley
very different you know bit more with
his feet and bit quicker and stuff but
Tarowski
>> sort of as you said like the steel of
the defense and
>> yeah I think as much as you know people
want Jacob Bryan to come in if Tarowi
continues playing like this then Jacob
Bryan's not going to get that
opportunity just because of how good
he's still playing and he's just got to
sort of take his moments where he can
but these two defenders you know when
they're together there's a lot I'm a lot
more confident Yeah, just as a whole.
>> Yeah. I mean, and with Jordan behind, I
mean, Jordan, some of his kicking this
season's been absolutely a bit I think
he had another one in this game, didn't
he?
>> Where he's kicking his 32 and there was
one in the first half where I think it
went he kicked it right down the middle
and somehow it did get to Barry, but it
was like a bouncing bomb and it's like
[snorts]
his kicking has been for whatever reason
>> his kicking has been poor this season.
>> Um, he's been getting like doing that
getting dead excited and just swiping at
the ball. Yeah.
>> Um,
and he has to calm down with that. Um,
but but listen, we dealt we dealt what
they threw. I think he had a a late a
late opportunity which we again we dealt
with it. Um, it was nervous. It wasn't
it wasn't great.
But in that back four, what we've found
is now that it is a proper back four,
you know, I think
Nile since he's come in has been really
solid. Again, you could look at the
moment when Davis scored, should he be
more switched onto that, but also going
forward, like we were saying before, the
cross, which Barry should do better for
in the first half. But I think he's made
that position his own now. I can't see
him not playing right back for the rest
of the season cuz we finally got a unit.
Michenko on the other side is, you know,
solid
>> for the most part. And I think he knows
he has to be solid now because he knows
he knows how we all know how important
our back four is to us because we don't
score a lot of goals. That's that's the
frustration is we should be scoring more
goals and we're not. So the defense is
going to come under a lot of scrutiny.
>> Yeah. I think you look at sort of mate
now and the4 million pound or whatever
they spend on him like an absolute
bargain for like the the the levels of
performance he's put in
>> and you know both attacking and
defensive wise and I think the same with
Michelenko. Obviously, he has his
criticisms and I think attacking wise,
he's probably not as strong, but I think
for the most part, he's been one of
Everton's probably better players this
season. You know, there's been a few
games where he's probably man of the
match as well for Everton. And I think,
>> you know, we know attacking wise, he's
going to have his sort of his issues and
that, you know, when it comes to
crossing or whatever, he's not, but I
think
>> he's doing everything defensively is
sort of right and, you know, he's making
the blocks, he's really he's putting the
effort and stuff. So as as much as you
know people talk about right back and
you know the mail ro and stuff Micheleno
doesn't have anyone sort of as a backup.
So if he doesn't perform there's no one
else really unless you're playing like a
James G or someone out of position. So I
feel like there's a lot of pressure sort
of on his back and I think he's taken it
well. I think for the most part he's
having a good season.
>> I think for the yeah I think for the
most part he's having he is having a
good season but I feel like he's someone
who faces
>> a lot of criticism.
>> Well I think cuz he is and then he wants
to take his space. I think you're
absolutely right. I think the fact that
there's no one to take his position
makes almost his position even harder
because if he has a bad game, he has to
bounce back the following week and have
a good game. Yeah.
>> And there's no there's no hiding from
that. You're playing every single game
whereas other some other positions face
criticism. And that's where it doesn't
make it easier for anyone else. But it
it's it keeps your levels up when you've
got someone fighting with you for your
position. And I think that's why Taki
has responded well this season. I think
cuz I think he knows he's seen like he's
probably heard and seen
>> the situation with Jacob O'Brien. He
probably understands Jacob Bryan wants
to start. He knows Jacob O'Brien's got
like got like seven six or seven years
on him. So he's got to be at his best
and that can only that can only produce
that competition is what we were always
talking about. It's the same way that
you know I think probably Hayden Hackne
could have come on this in this game a
little bit earlier. Now you've got four
four wingers.
>> Yeah,
>> that might the manager might look at it
and go, "Well, actually, now that we've
got another winger, that means
>> I can use um Johnson more as a
>> striker
>> striker. That means he doesn't start as
many games oddly." But
>> um
>> it's the same with like when Norard's
going to come back like James G. I don't
think he had his best game for Everton.
I think an old guard when he comes in
because it is more of his position. You
know, he's going to f give him that
competition and then he can either play
a bit further forward where he's
probably better or he'll level have to
level up his game together.
>> And I think the next couple of weeks I
know we've got play and Jame James
Garner has been called up for England,
but we've got we've got players there
who can go through a little bit of a
mini preseason offrey. There's there's
apparently there's a friendly arranged
um who goes in goal, I don't know. Um
but there's call up. Yeah, there's a
friend there's there Baz might get a
game. Um there's there's Yeah, there's a
there's a few weeks to get it sorted and
and you know the real even like the real
hard work starts then when when the
Premier League returns and there's
tougher games to face and
teams have started to gel and all that
kind of thing. So it's been a it's been
a fantastic start. I think it really
really has and hopefully we get
>> Milan roll back from his injury.
hopefully no guard is near there or
thereabouts by the time by the time we
come back as well another three weeks I
mean you know that is a that's what this
three weeks at least is good for is to
>> patch up all anyone who's got an injury
and get that squad back and then we've
got have we got four games till the next
international break
>> and then it goes and then obviously we
go into that that period where it's
going to get very very hectic over over
December and January and February so uh
where Hopefully we'll be in two cup
competitions. Who knows? Um but listen,
we won 1 nil.
>> Yeah,
>> and that's all that matters. We got the
win. We're still unbeaten. We're we're
joint fifth in the league. Uh it's a
really one of our best starts for a
while. Obviously, I think like in recent
times, Carlo CO year was better, I
think,
>> but then that was that had it
circumstances. So, you can't ask for it.
You could have asked for more. We could
have beat Spurs last week because
they're rubbish. Um but but we've got
through it and and yeah, as bad as the
game was,
it's gone out me mind now. It's
>> Yeah, we've drawn a line under it and it
was it was three points. So
>> there was a lot of games last season,
wasn't there, where we play well, but
then we'd still lose or draw and you
know, we'd sit on the we talk about like
have we lost that game or look back and
be like that was a real opportunity. At
least now even if we're playing badly,
we're still getting the three points
which is massive. Yeah, we can, you
know, on the DVD at the end of the year,
we can just skip through this one goals
when we get our when when we're, you
know, league champions DVD the end of
the year. We just skip past this one.
>> We just got that was one of those games
that won us the league.
>> Yeah.
>> You know what I'm saying? Know what I'm
saying? Right. Uh, we are carrying on

>> or I haven't done it and you've seen it.
