What actually is Rot to Watts? Our
prototype is an insertable metal tube
lined with thermoelectric generators,
otherwise known as TEGs. These TEGs use
a temperature difference across the two
sides to generate a current. By using
compost, which can reach quite warm
temperatures, and the cooler outside
air, we are able to power a small light
bulb. Some benefits of this include the
fact that it uses renewable energy, and
it produces electricity without any
moving parts. So, it could provide power
during natural disasters or power cuts.
How did we come across this idea? Well,
compost waste is actually a large source
of wasted energy. Through some research
and some practical experiments, we
discovered that the internal temperature
of the compost can reach up to 70°C. We
experimented with lots of different
ideas to make use of this wasted energy,
such as using it to heat up a radiator.
However, this wouldn't work in practice,
so we decided to switch up our ideas.
Before we could start prototyping or
designing, we had to perform some
preliminary experiments. As you can see,
we tested many different variables in
the lab, and also got our hands dirty
testing different kinds of compost and
their temperatures.
Our final product is a well-insulated
metal tube covered in five TEGs, which
are all wired light bulb. In this video,
you can see us using decaying grass
compost, cold water, which we were able
to power a light bulb. As you can see,
our bulb is not very bright on this
sunny day, but it proves that our
prototype, along with our idea, works.
In the future, we would market our
product to households who have a garden,
farmers, or people living in the
countryside, as they often have compost
piles. Our product works best in cooler
countries, as seen in the graph, and
could be used to charge batteries, light
bulbs, weather monitors, or as an
emergency power supply, along with many
other things.
