Bourbaki is at the top. If you were a
young mathematician in the 1960s,
you too would have adopted
Bourbaki's language, methods, and worldview.
His influence now extends beyond his
writings alone. The Bourbaki seminar is held 3 days a month in a
packed hall
. It is the great showcase of the
mathematics of its time.
Researchers present the discoveries
that fascinate and excite the
entire world.
For a young mathematician, attending it is like
taking the pulse of the discipline.
It must have come into being. I want to
talk about Nicolas Bourbaki,
whose birth dates back to the year
1935.
Everyone knows, or almost everyone knows
today, that this
mathematician never existed, that he
is imaginary, but that his works that
exist are the fruit [grunts] of the
collaboration of successive generations
of students from the normal school. I think this is
a fairly
specific phenomenon of the École Normale Supérieure.
Bourbakiqui invented a new rule during this period
that may
surprise you. At 50, members
must give up their place.
No wise old man. Bourbaki must remain
young and at the forefront of mathematics.
Henrion, a professor at the École Normale
Supérieure, is the
group's headhunter. Potential recruits, called
guinea pigs, are observed, tested, gently
hazed to check that they have
the right stuff and above all the Bourbaki spirit.
The elected officials then joined the construction site and
took a hand in drafting the
volumes of the elements.
In Impression of a Guinea Pig, the young
Pierre Samuel writes: "And it was for
young minds an infinite pleasure and
an honor to join this
distinguished group where the
highest mathematics and the spirit of the hoax are intertwined.
All in an atmosphere of an
initiatory secret society.
The new recruits are up to the task.
Several will win the Fils Medal,
the highest award in the
discipline.
To advance mathematics, one
needs great audacity. One must
change a whole series of concepts. I
mean, a whole series of
acquired prejudices. It is necessary to be
mentally very audacious and
consequently mentally very young. And
certainly, it is probably
between 25 and 35 or 40 years old that
mathematicians are the most creative.
I just said there are advantages to
having a different point of view and
maybe you know having not yet learned
the standard proof techniques in a field
because you might try to deploy some
different ones that you know but there
are also advantages to experience um you
know there are a lot of areas of
mathematics that I understand much
better Now that I'm in my 40s, I'm
no longer as eligible for the music scene as I was
10 years ago when I was still... I would
say that I'm a
better mathematician today, and I expect
to be a better mathematician in 10 or 20 years.
Bourbaki ensures its succession and invents a
rule that makes it eternal.
But can one truly reign
over mathematics for eternity?
After this group of people who wanted to
shake things up a bit with the old guard,
well, the fate that
befalls all such groups of people would have befallen them. That is to say,
they themselves became,
in a way, the old guard 20 or 25
years later. This meant that in the
60s or 70s, some mathematicians
started to feel that Bourbaki
had a bit too much influence or to
criticize him. But that's just how it is

While French youth were in
the streets, the Bourbaki group was

While some of these former members
joined the student movement,
others felt it wasn't their
place to discuss politics.

still had no women. Some
even recounted
unpleasant experiences with Bourbaki,
like Michel Vern, a renowned
mathematician who wrote about it: "
I have horrible memories of the
Bourbaki seminar where I spoke in
1969. I was very nervous, very
anxious about the impression
I had made. There were two men who
said something. The first one—and
he was nice—well, what a The discovery
that there are sexy female mathematicians
and another rather old one, I quote
her exactly. Ah, it was technical. You could tell it was
a woman
speaking. Lots of precise little calculations
, not a single grand idea.
You have no complex about math.
You end up developing one. I think I can hear you
saying, "Oh, she's
doing math and it seems
extraordinary to many people." So
we end up having a level of lacquer
against that. You are what one might call
an intellectual woman. Do
you think that kills the guys?
Too bad for them. If it looks good, it keeps me interested

I think that
the abstract dimension, in a somewhat
symbolic way, is
still associated with a more masculine pole, uh,
where uh, the feminine would be more
associated with things that are a bit
applied, uh, uh, a bit more
calculating, or at least uh, uh, where
we work a bit more, let's say,
intuitively.
And how many women were in the
ONST graduating class? Uh, well, I
couldn't say the exact number, but I
think there were about 5 of us, something
like that. 5 out of 45, so it
really wasn't much. So it's true
that I was very isolated and when I did
my master's degree in fundamental mathematics, it was also the
most male-dominated field. So this
was almost even worse because it
was a big master's degree. I
think there were 70 students and two girls, so there were probably
five of us again.
