Video summary
The group of Halo fans reacting to Season 2, Episode 7, "Thermopylae," expressed a mix of disappointment and frustration regarding the episode's pacing and narrative choices. While they acknowledged significant events like the fall of Reach, many felt that other episodes had become stagnant or failed to advance the plot effectively. Specific criticisms targeted unnecessary bottle episodes and questionable writing decisions, such as removing Master Chief from his armor for extended periods and mishandling character arcs for Jai and the Spartans. The commentary also highlighted major plot developments, including the revelation that Master Chief is alive but missing, the surprisingly early introduction of the Flood, and the mysterious nature of the Halo ring itself.
A significant portion of the discussion focused on the show's handling of Cortana, whose reduced screen time was viewed negatively despite her importance in the game lore. The reaction to Admiral Parangoski was largely hostile, with viewers criticizing her portrayal as an antagonist who recklessly sacrifices Spartan-3s against overwhelming Covenant forces. Furthermore, the group took issue with visual effects choices, such as the mechanics of the hardlight bridge and the decision to show Master Chief's face without his helmet. They argued that this constant exposure undermines the character's mystique, a point they attributed to the live-action format's perceived need to avoid skepticism compared to animation or games where such elements are accepted without question.
The speakers were equally critical of the lead actor, describing his performance as wooden and unskilled, while noting that only the actress playing Perez stood out positively. This poor quality led to deep pessimism about a potential Season 3, with the group predicting the series would be short-lived and dismissively calling it "17 episodes of piss." They asserted that any faithfulness to the source material became impossible after the first episode, labeling the entire series a complete bastardization that creates continuity errors and ignores established lore regarding Reach's destruction and the Pillar of Autumn mission. Using a Jenga tower analogy, they explained how the adaptation removes essential narrative bricks, like the context of the Fall of Reach, and replaces them with incompatible elements, causing the story structure to collapse.
Ultimately, the episode concluded with a cliffhanger involving the Flood and the Spartans approaching the Halo ring, which the commentators felt served primarily as a setup for a future season rather than delivering a satisfying resolution. The segment ended with banter about attending the finale, interrupted by someone bringing sauce, but the overarching sentiment remained one of skepticism regarding the show's direction and quality. Despite these final moments of lightheartedness, the consensus was that the series had strayed too far from its roots, making it difficult for fans to remain invested in the unfolding drama as it moved toward its anticipated conclusion.

Hi everyone. I'm so glad that you're
here because I'm glad that I'm here with
all of my friends and we're here for a
very special occasion. It is the
anniversary get together of the Halo
season 2 watch party crew extravaganza
and we're here to watch we're here to
watch Halo season 2 episode 7. And boy,
I don't know about you, but I'm excited.
I am
>> it's nearly over this incredible. You
sort of look back and you're like, look
how far we've come. You know,
>> so much has happened this season in one
episode.
>> So much hasn't happened, too.
>> Isn't it funny that if you are a Halo
fan and someone was describing watching
the season who is not a Halo fan to you
and they said like not a lot has
happened, Reach got taken, I guess.
>> Yeah, we've we've covered like the span
of one game and like half a book in two
seasons.
>> And simultaneously, we had episodes like
episode five where basically nothing was
achieved. How insane is it that that is
so reliable in these [ __ ] shows where
there'll just be a nothing episode all
the time?
>> Fill up eight episodes. You could make
one less, but I mean there are a lot of
shows that had to do 22 episodes a
season and they managed to find enough
story to cram into 22 episodes
struggling with eight.
>> I'm thinking of the Star Trek bottle
episodes. But what I don't get is this
isn't for broadcast television. So it's
not like there's a contractual
obligation to fill air time. So, why is
there a a strict like episode
requirement if they just don't have the
chops to do a full episode?
>> Well, I guess maybe there isn't because
for season one was nine and this one was
eight. There was so much riveting story
in season 1, but they just couldn't get
up to that number for season 2.
>> And you know the [ __ ] answer they'd
give you, they'd be like, "That
episode's actually very important. It
was for a chance for our characters to
really Yeah, it was that cope about how
Master Chief and uh and Jon and Halo are
like two different
>> characters. Well, that's right. They
made the very bold decision to take Jon
out of his armor for a really long
amount of time to explore his
relationship with himself.
>> You got to have a good
>> It's kind of funny how I I didn't really
see that as being one of the themes of
the show until somebody on Twitter said
it. It's almost like
>> and then it all sort of fell into place.
All of the maybe two scenes where you
could kind of argue that just sort of
coales out of the ether to reveal that
the show is actually deeply profound and
not a complete waste of time. What I
don't get is it's more about Jon having
issues with him being abducted as a
child. It's not absolutely not about his
persona.
>> It's funny that you've said that,
Patrician, cuz I feel in season 2, even
the aspects of the Spartan program and
him being upset about that all. It feels
like that's been dropped because he's
still operating within the UNC apparatus
that was in part responsible for it with
no qualms. Like he doesn't care and
nobody cares. Kai doesn't care. Riz and
I guess Saurin before he died didn't
care either.
>> I miss Saurin.
>> I miss him too. He was the only one that
I was like kind of okay with. He fed
pigeons which was big bonus. But now
>> Saurin that was
>> Oh, not Saurin. I mean uh [laughter]
>> the other black
>> was all right. I I like Saurin as well.
She's kind of
>> There's this woman. She flipped a coin.
She dared me to call it and I did.
>> Oh, remember when John Halo explained
that he called it 11 times the universe
ordained that he is so magical that he
can never die in battle?
>> He did. He did die in battle. And she's
one. [laughter]
>> Oh, yay. My favorite scene.
>> Just beat the [ __ ] out of him and
[laughter] then left.
>> I actually like Kai as a character in
retrospect because she seems a lot more
like what a Spartan is supposed to be.
She's going through the same emotional
arc as the rest of them that lost their
pellets, right? But she isn't going
becoming a [ __ ] crazy person.
>> What is it doing here? [sighs]
What is this place? Oh, the well cowards
didn't show up to the magic well and
they both Miranda and they didn't tell
Miranda that her father died on reach.
>> Well, either that or she does not we
don't get to see her opinion on that
>> when Arbiter decided to fight all of
these other elites.
>> But he seemed to have more people with
him as well, right? Like it's a bit
>> Why do the elites have such weird armor?
It's not anything like
>> strange
odd.
>> Such a coincidence. They both were
touching them at the same time.
>> Listen, they were cold by the universe.
>> It's predeterminism. The librarian has a
plan to make them meet up and have sex.
>> I always thought it was alive. I tried
to understand what it wants from me.
>> Why do they think that anybody cares
about Mackie?
>> I want her to die painfully.
>> She did, but then they brought her back.
[laughter]
>> God damn it.
>> Why me? Why you?
>> Man, this is the most that they've shown
of Halo.
>> Well, we're heading there.
>> This looks very real.
>> GG. Jesus. What? [laughter] What is this
vignette?
>> You couldn't just go to like British
Columbia or something and just go find
some mountains.
>> The Arbiter is a soldier like you.
>> Start to wonder if it would have been
better off just to [ __ ] have like
some guy draw a picture for him in the
background instead of this.
>> You brought the covenant there. Millions
of people gone.
>> Look at this [laughter] blue.
>> If you could burn high charity to
embers, would you hesitate?
>> There's a difference. You're human.
>> No, the difference is that they're the
aggressors in a war of extin. Why would
you say that? I don't understand why you
would I [laughter] don't Why is that
your answer?
>> What if there are no sides?
>> Did the Covenant make you special human
clothes? That's cute. Did all the little
engineers with their tent and their
little arms like
>> one challenge? I've never made something
for a human before.
>> They're just excited to do something
new. They're knitting with their little
tentacles. They got all the little
needle and everything going at it.
>> We are not the same.
>> You don't believe that.
>> I want to see a little friendly engineer
just learning about stuff. He learns how
to make a show and then he becomes
disgusted by this.
>> You can't bring the Covenant here. If
they control the Halo,
>> they will annihilate humankind.
>> You don't know what Halo is.
>> Neither of you actually know what Halo
is.
>> The ring does more than destroy. We
could build a world here.
>> There's already worlds, but you
destroyed one of them.
>> The shot is so disorienting.
>> It really is
>> a place of peace.
>> They're not going to let that happen.
>> They don't decide.
>> Very confused as to her motive.
>> The ring doesn't belong to them. It
belongs to us. Like, so she wants them
to come here and live in peace. Like,
who? You and him? Just the two of them?
>> Yeah, it's a love story.
>> He's very evil.
>> So is he.
>> Yeah, he's not great himself.
>> They to be I guess you're right. They
deserve it.
>> Oh no, they're covered.
>> You need to move. [laughter]
>> There's aliens behind you.
>> What the [ __ ] was that?
>> Remember, shock waves, EMPs, the
keystone does many things.
>> Come on, get it. No. Damn it. the hero.
He's gone.
>> You were so close.
>> Look at this [ __ ]
>> Oh, that was a terrible transition.
>> They gave her a weak elite to fight.
>> You say he's the weak elite. He's the
boss one. He's the only one that has
character.
[laughter]
>> Man, that was some really bad composing.
>> He was jogging like he was on a
treadmill where he was like supposed to
be a Covenant ship.
>> Why is he running?
>> It's not purple enough. It's not purple
enough to be a Covenant ship.
>> Just color correct it. Jesus.
>> What the [ __ ]
He's going to get stabbed in the back
during the scene, isn't he?
>> Mama is one of the Covenant from Halo
4's Spartan Ops mode.
>> Maybe this is his dad.
>> Anybody?
>> Lame.
>> Why did he His arm was still
>> Why did she get
>> Why did she get a little oneliner?
>> That's up in his top right. It's in the
shoulder.
>> He could still have done something.
Listen,
>> shoulder wounds. Shoulder wounds killed
the Spartan in this show.
>> Why did Why do they do that? Why did
they clearly have her stab him in a
non-lethal spot? Why did they They chose
to do that. They chose to That was a
choice they made. But why?
>> So, Cortana was able to find the
location of Halo based on her weird
psychic memory. Even though she has
she's not connected to her brain.
>> And even if she was, it wouldn't even
connect to a brain. It wouldn't mean
anything.
>> Role in this show is [ __ ] wild
compared to [laughter] what we know
>> compared to the games. Yeah. It's crazy,
isn't it? And she's still barely
present, which I is just crazy. this
season. It feels like they forgot about
her and they're making up for lost time.
>> Wow, Rags. It's very in keeping with
season 1. They forgot about her a lot of
the time in season one, too.
>> What's funny is in the games, she has
way more lines than Master Chief. She's
like the primary voice of the player
character.
>> She's the second most important
character besides him.
>> It is the kind of thing where the riers
you just like, how do you come up with
what you keep and what you get rid of?
Like, what what is your system?
>> As a dart board has a bunch of
possibilities.
>> Fine. We'll give him the arbiter, but
not their arbiter. He's our
>> It'll be a weird flumpy orbiter that's
not really, but we'll call him that.
It's just We'll just make a different
alien and call him that.
>> I take it your strike team has failed to
locate Master Chief.
>> THEY WERE RIGHT THERE, MAN.
>> I GUESS HE'LL go knocked out.
>> But then the big the big blue circle
went out and knocked out all the
electricity.
>> If people learn that Master Chief, in
fact, is not dead, it'll lead to
inconvenient questions about Reach,
don't you think?
>> Have they not accounted for the fact
that they're going to have to answer
very awkward questions about Reach?
Surely many people are already thinking,
"Man, we left like 2 days before it
fell." That's kind of like crazy, isn't
it?
>> Good thing you brought those Spartan
armors.
>> Good thing you started the Spartan 3
program just after John Halo died, huh?
>> That's a Covenant battle group.
>> Big old battle coming along.
>> That's the entire first fleet of
>> Yeah, you guys are
>> You're in a lot of trouble here.
>> There's significant energy coming from
the center of that system.
>> Someone had fun just keep adding them to
it. Playing that little plunky.
>> Are they going to suck? Is is [laughter]
the fleet going to get sucked into ready
the Spartan 3s?
>> My Spartan 3s were trained to execute
specialized missions.
>> I thought you said they were ready.
>> Well, yeah, but not to fight an entire
Covenant fleet.
>> I don't think they're ready for this.
>> How many do you have?
>> They're not designed to assault a
Covenant fleet.
>> Your job to prepare them. I decide how
they used.
>> Are you [ __ ] ma'am?
>> Why would you use them in a situation
for which they cannot win?
>> It's not a big deal anyways cuz a lot of
them are just adults who have been like
playing video games for the past week.
Look at that [ __ ] fleet.
>> This is not a black hole.
>> It's a portal to Halo.
>> Ooh.
>> What?
>> Maybe. I don't know.
>> I don't know. Maybe. [laughter] [ __ ] it.
>> Oh, and he's just casually walking
around.
>> Of course he is. [ __ ] it.
>> Is about to
help him out.
>> Wait. So, is Cortana both on the
Covenant ship and here now?
>> She is on the Covenant ship and
communicating, I guess, across many,
many light years here.
>> John 117, stop where you are.
>> Oh, I was wondering if this lady was
going to come back.
>> We have orders to take you. She's a sub
boss.
>> Those aren't your orders.
>> He's resisting. Take him down.
>> I said take him down.
>> They're not going to shoot him.
>> That's Master Chief.
>> I mean, he's getting a little close
there. I don't know.
>> I've been on that side of the gun.
>> We know you've held guns, sir.
>> I didn't ask questions. I didn't want to
know.
>> Pull the trigger.
>> He's very lucky this guy didn't just
pull the trigger. Honestly,
>> he's lucky that none of the other guys
decided to shoot. Master Chief killed a
bunch of your maybe friends in the
holding your
>> gun.
>> What are you doing?
>> I actually don't know why they aren't.
>> All of them have disengaged.
>> Do it yourself.
>> You would just Well, we'll stop it from
doing that. She might. She literally
might.
>> STOP RIGHT THERE.
>> WHAT? WHOA.
>> WOW.
>> YEAH, he just died there. [laughter]
What the [ __ ]
>> We had to have a woman hit her.
>> Why did they decide that
>> I knew I [ __ ] knew Master Chief was
not going to lay a finger on that
character? Why do they think he's good?
>> I actually don't know.
>> No, he's been nothing but evil.
>> Whoever designed this complex built the
Halo.
>> What [ __ ] are we doing here?
>> What is this place? It's a repository
for knowledge. Like a library.
>> A library? Uh-oh. [laughter]
>> With a librarian inside.
>> You said something about a mistake.
>> Has she not told her that her dad's
dead?
>> I don't know if she knows. I don't
[laughter] know.
>> I can only assume that she
>> It would be so [ __ ] insane if she
didn't know. I I have to assume she does
know.
>> It's just easy drama.
>> Yeah. You get to watch someone have a
reaction.
>> The cipher isn't just mathematical.
>> You're moving those knobs as though
she's doing something.
>> So philosophical.
>> In this case, a complex idographic
system.
>> I'm solving this puzzle.
>> Yeah. Someone have to make that for this
show. It probably took them ages. They
watching the show. They're like, "Look,
son. I made that. I know this show.
[ __ ] [laughter] I made that."
>> Whatever you found wasn't in your notes.
Tell me DNA.
>> Ooh.
>> Human DNA.
>> Theirs
and ours.
>> Yay. We did it,
>> man. We're getting there fast, huh?
>> That's cuz we spent so much time on
expansing
catch up with the Halo part
>> cuz they need to get people to want a
season 3, right? So, they got to throw a
load of stuff in.
>> I have the commander of the lead,
Condor.
>> This is Admiral Parangoski.
>> So, they've just sent the Spartan 3s to
go and attack this fleet. Do they
actually think this is going to work?
>> Why have their fleet be so
>> Now I'm wondering if if it will work
just for the the show to be able to kill
them. She wants to kill them.
>> Yes. Yes. That's the end point because
there's a story about the Spartan 3s
about them being wasted just like this.
>> November 2 radio.
>> Why so predictable? [laughter]
>> Well, how all assassin condors is
[music] attack Onyx over.
>> Are you [ __ ] Yeah, look at what you
did. You [ __ ] idiot. You imbecile.
Does she want them? She wants them dead,
right?
>> Deploy the second wave.
>> Yes.
>> Whatever interest there is in wiping out
the Spartan threes, wouldn't you want to
spend them better? Even if you want them
gone.
>> No, she has to be tacitly evil.
>> What is She's evil. She's trying to kill
the Spartans. How many Spartan threes
are you willing [music] to sacrifice?
>> All of them.
>> She has to be an antagonist for the
season's antagonist.
>> He was this season's antagonist, but
[laughter] now he's the one who wants to
preserve human life.
>> If the Covenant takes the halo, we won't
live to fight another day.
>> Oh, so she's justoundly.
>> She's just profoundly stupid.
>> This is what I'm saying. Like if you
want to get rid of the threes, surely
there are better ways.
>> There's too many Covenant ships. They'll
just blow them up before they can even
get close. Obviously,
waste of human life. They're not
achieving anything.
>> Oh, it's also a waste of a force. Like,
they surely have things they need to
achieve. Just throw them at that. Even
if they die, you know.
>> Our trainers told us that the objective
was to defend the pass.
>> Oh, this is back of the polar.
>> No sights on the rifles.
>> Well, they have eyes rags. They won't
need them. It's too expensive. And
they're just good. They're just
throwaway soldiers in the car.
>> That's just That's just an American
quarter.
>> She's imbued with luck.
>> That's just a luck transferable.
That's not even like a space quarter.
It's literally just an American quarter.
>> Abraham Lincoln isn't on it. [laughter]
>> So we stood together.
>> I mean, yeah, we can spend a few minutes
on this, I guess.
>> We lost We lost together.
>> Together.
>> Yeah.
>> Cliches. Woohoo.
>> You need to You need to shave that.
>> What are we going to do about Kesler?
>> He's like, "Oh, well, I was doing some
thing. What? Are we on pl
>> What are we going to do about Kesler?"
>> Nothing.
>> What?
>> Tonight is his.
>> What are you talking about?
>> If we take this away from him, he'll
never know which person he is.
>> What? What is this? What are you talking
about?
>> What's happening?
>> What the hell did they do to you?
>> The people who stood by me no matter
what.
>> I stand by you no matter what.
>> Holy [ __ ]
>> I take them again.
>> No.
>> Oh, she took your Yeah, your wig. You
lost the wig. You lost your power.
>> All that time you were obsessing about
Hoy. You were trying to find your way
back.
>> Oh, is that what is that what they think
they were doing with him? Okay.
>> I'm confused. How How has his story
followed that at all?
>> His story is totally antithetical to
this. It was him trying to forge a life
for himself in about him. He has a son.
>> He was like the most interesting person
because he wasn't a psycho.
>> And he had some agency which was really
uh
>> my era. Don't
>> just stare at that.
>> You're lucky. Don't worry. You're lucky.
You'll be fine.
>> Nice airsoft gun.
>> So, do these Spartan 3s know what
happened to the first set of Spartan 3?
>> I guess they were told, "Hey, look. All
right. They did pretty well. Now, what
sending you in?"
>> They died within 10 seconds of arriving
at their location.
>> No, no, they they didn't arrive. Pretty
sure I'm going to die.
>> You're just scared of being scared.
>> No, I think she's scared of the real
possibility of death.
>> I'm scared of dying pointlessly.
>> When that plasma starts flying, you
won't have time to be scared for
yourself.
>> Holy. It's so It's weird how many women
there are in like these military soldier
positions. That's
>> it. Weird.
>> Remember she was escaping Reach on that
ship and then she was like just in the
Spartan 3 program. We didn't really like
see the
>> connecting pieces for her story at all.
>> Spartan 3 now.
>> You lied to us. You put us in harm's
way. You got us grounded.
>> That's true.
>> True.
>> I tried to help you, but you wouldn't
listen.
>> That's right. And he's not listening
loud. What a rude [ __ ]
>> I had to make a call.
>> You made the wrong call.
>> Is she wearing Scorpio's outfit?
>> How are you referencing that Rex?
>> Because I'm a smart boy.
>> Show me what you found.
>> What are they doing here? What are they
setting up here? What are they going
for?
>> Well, whatever. Is this Quan about to
figure out the the big door?
>> Remember, she's got the super duper
special connection. So maybe she's the
maybe she's just got to touch it.
>> Just move one thing slightly
>> like the ark to me. Oh yeah. So she does
touch it and it has super duper special
properties. What are the odds that John
Halo bumped into her? What are the odds
of that?
>> Well, he's just died easily at any
point.
>> She gets the UI indications of when the
puzzle pieces are in the correct spot.
>> Star system.
>> Wait, what? They can blow those ships up
and that destroys a solar system? I bet
that's how they're going to destroy the
whole fleet. Is that how it's going to
work? [ __ ] off.
>> Actually, [ __ ] off.
>> John, no.
>> Beat him up.
>> Give me one reason why I shouldn't kill
this guy right now.
>> Nothing comes to mind.
>> Wait, why'd she say honestly nothing
comes to mind?
>> So, she's totally flipped 100%.
>> My armor IS BEHIND A BIOMETRIC LOCK.
>> WE NEED HIS FACE.
>> Are you choking him or not?
>> We need his face
>> attached.
>> How are you going to get there without
even if Master Chief got into this
situation? He wouldn't be like, "I'm
going to [ __ ] rip his head off."
>> Yeah, he would. That's totally a chief
line.
>> The virus compresses the ship's fusion
drive, creating a reaction powerful
enough to incinerate everything within a
million miles.
>> What?
>> Okay, so Parangoski is just like crazy
insane.
>> Parangoski's throwing Spartan 3s at the
Covenant fleet in swarms because she
doesn't need all of them to make it.
>> Yeah, I don't remember that being set
up, but I guess that's what we're doing
now.
>> But if this is something they can do,
why wouldn't they make why wouldn't they
make bombs like this?
>> No, I don't [clears throat] remember a
cabinet cruiser to test this. This is
that [ __ ] Last Jedi fleet maneuver
thing over again. Why would you write
the destructive scale at this level?
>> Same with the Rise of Skywalker stuff.
Like when you when you make this many
ships and you know that you have to have
a win button for this problem, it
doesn't really work.
>> What happened to my father?
>> Oh, now she's asking what happened to
her dad.
>> They say he stayed behind.
>> Oh, we're doing it now. Yeah.
>> Feel like we should have done this ages
ago.
>> He lit a pipe and exploded. I don't
know.
>> It was weird.
>> Survivors are scattered all over the
galaxy.
Can't be sure he's not one of them.
>> True. We We blacked out and then Master
Chief woke up on Northern Texas planet.
>> Just [ __ ] accidentally left. I
guarantee.
>> So, she's going to touch it and then
it'll magically open up the door. Oh,
wow.
>> Wow.
>> Nobody tried to pry them off the wall.
>> No, they're not allowed to. She is
because she's a protector.
>> Yeah, it's like a sword and the stone
type deal.
>> Huh? CG.
>> Not just math, not just language. Shut
up. You [ __ ] I hate you so much.
>> These are stars.
>> Oh, you like it.
>> What do you think stars are?
>> What else could they possibly look like
to
>> Oh, it just stays there.
>> Okay.
>> How did she know it would do that? How
did she know?
>> Isn't it so funny? Cuz if you just be
like, "What the [ __ ] is going on?" Like,
>> if you're off by an inch, that's like a
trillion miles. I don't even [laughter]
>> It's fine.
>> Did they get rid of Vatic suit? Do they
just toss it?
>> Hurry up. Show some emergency.
>> That seems like a weird way to store it.
standing up out in the open
>> standing up on these glowy platforms
likely with it.
>> In the games, the Spartan suits had to
be put on by like a team of people.
>> That's suit I guess.
>> Oh, so there's Banic suits, but Rizz's
is gone for some reason.
>> No, they're all there, but Kai suit is
gone.
>> Oh, cuz these are the secure ones. Is
available.
>> Well, I'm glad we solved that mystery.
We did it, everyone.
>> What we going to do? Well, I came here
to punch a hole in your chest.
>> Nice.
>> You're in Master Chief.
>> Your Master Chief line right there. I
didn't give the orders wrong reach,
>> but you followed them and I followed
you. I'm
>> They're trying to do some commentary
here about like blindly following
orders. Feels weird when the enemy in
this case is an alien race hellbent on
killing everyone.
>> We just don't have the money to actually
show them consistently. So,
>> so we need to create on subplots.
>> You are going to tell everybody what
Perangoski did. I don't have proof. I'm
the proof.
>> How are you? What
>> aren't you insane though? Like there's
easier to make a narrative that you lost
your mind. You're going to show the
footage of you in the cell beating up
the UNC guys and everything.
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah. All those people you killed and
the ones in the forest.
>> And besides this guy,
>> psycho weirdo.
>> He's not making it. He's just not.
>> Copy destroyed, too. Somebody always
pays.
>> Yeah. And it's not you, John Hailer,
because you never die in battle.
>> Every time I go into battle, I know I
can lose somebody. I know it's not going
to be me.
>> That's what you people never understand.
You
>> put him in a Pokéball. And Ghost of Onyx
actually does kind of end with him going
into a Pokéball.
Come on, hurry up. Put on the [ __ ]
armor.
>> Yeah, we're dragging. A
>> lot of fat in this episode.
>> That's why it's only 48 minutes.
>> Around the
exactly the right place.
>> Just to be clear, if you want to see a
constellation, you have to be standing
at a very particular angle so that the
stars all match a particular position.
And also, the stars would have changed
significantly since the time of the
4Runners. They would have to use quazars
and neutrinos which have like consistent
pulses to actually map out where they
are.
>> Like you could look at the stars and be
like, "Oh, they've moved this much." So
we could calculate like a particular
time or a particular date. But this show
doesn't [ __ ] know that.
>> No, this show's not smart enough.
>> This show's like, "Oh, if I look at the
galaxy
language puzzles,
>> this isn't their sky."
>> Oh, is she pointing out that they
>> What are you doing?
>> I just So now they move together.
>> Stars, they move over time. How does she
know where to put the
>> Oh, wow. They figured out the base.
>> Oh, look. It's the Halo.
>> How do you know where they go?
>> She just knows.
>> If you're off by even a couple of
centimeters, you're off by hundreds of
millions of kilome.
>> I've seen it before. They're stars.
>> And she's just remembering what the cave
said. And she's being guided by the will
of the halo.
>> And then it's going to show the halo
array, right?
>> They already showed
>> mystical music playing.
>> Why would you open with showing that
there were seven rings? They should open
with just being the one. I know Halo
fans are going to know that there's
seven rings, but
>> Wow. Amazing.
>> Oh my gosh. This is insane.
>> Oh wow.
>> Oh man. It's all been leading up to
this, huh?
>> It's formed to Stargate.
>> Woohoo.
>> Oh, this is so lame.
>> All right, grab your P90s, boys. We're
going in.
>> This is just Halos on the other side of
that [laughter] or something. I actually
it's the show, so who knows what they'll
do. They open this door and they're just
inside the silent cartgraphy.
>> This is what I mean. If you're a fan of
the games, what reason do you have to be
excited for what's behind this door? If
anything, you should be horrified. You
should be absolutely terrified of what
they're going to do.
>> Oh, wait. What if
>> Yeah, she intuitively knew what
hardlight worked like.
>> It does sort of look like
>> I would tap it with a pin.
>> Would be funnier if you jump. He just
jumps really far and then it walks the
bridge.
>> It's a leap of faith. It's symbolic.
>> I can't come with you because
Perangaskki is right. If we lose the
Halo,
>> you heard what he said.
>> You don't know what Halo is.
>> We're talking about an entire fleet.
>> I'm talking about the end of everything.
>> But that's the name of
>> You don't know WHAT HALO IS. YOU DON'T
WANT TO DIE.
>> Never been there.
>> You just believe the crazy alien [ __ ]
when she told you whatever it was. This
is why the Halo game started with them
being at Halo and didn't build up to
them going to the titular place because
it ascribes unearned importance if they
Jesus.
>> Which is what this show has done
massively. They just made big leaps.
They didn't even know that Halo was a
place that existed. Then they did and
then they concluded that it must be a
weapon based on nothing.
>> Sacred ring. Halo.
>> You have some atistic connection to this
thing that we're calling the Halo. The
divine wind will rush through,
propelling all those who are worthy on a
great journey to the sacred ring. The
survival of our species depends on what
it can teach us.
>> If they control the halo,
>> they will annihilate humankind.
>> Halo has more than one purpose, but in
the wrong hands, it is a weapon.
>> But it DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.
>> MULLER, when you play the Halo games we
haven't played yet, it it's not going to
be like this. What?
>> It'll be just like complet it'll be
completely different.
>> I want to press button to scream as John
Halo. I want to be like
>> as as John Halo caves in a man's skull
and says, "I hate the UNC. I hate
humanity.
>> Just get to the Halo no matter what."
>> Kind of crazy that they tried to build
up Silver Team only to have them
separated most of the time.
>> Yeah. And without their suits.
>> What does it say? The central segment is
like the idioraph for growth.
>> God, this is
>> how do you possibly know what these
symbols mean if you have nothing to
compare it with?
>> The symbol at the top usually has
negative connotations.
>> If you have a bunch of symbols, you
might be able to recognize repeated
letters. It could be. It could be
whoever built this place is [ __ ]
Sonic OC's. You don't know
>> exactly. And it's I just find it funny.
It's like Quog, you open this one, too.
Had this next one had this thing.
[laughter] I don't know what the [ __ ]
going on. So,
>> let's walk very slowly.
>> It's a tomb.
>> They said it. They said the thing it's a
tomb.
>> It's a laboratory.
>> Oh my god. Is this flood
stuff?
>> Oh no.
>> Also, this is what an alien laboratory
looks like.
>> The library The library is the the in
Halo, the first Halo. It's the flood
mission. They're kept in the Is this
going to be the flood for real?
>> I figure they would bring in the flood
sooner rather than later because they're
running out of iconography to just
juice. You know,
>> it's a scientist.
>> What the [ __ ]
>> Don't touch it.
>> Obviously,
>> you shouldn't even be in this room. Poke
it.
>> You should have like a biohazard thing
on right now.
>> There's something in his hand.
>> You're You're already dying of super
flood. Oh my god. I can't believe
they're doing this.
>> Why is that happening?
>> We need to move.
Let's go.
>> Are they about to get trapped because
they don't move fast enough?
>> What about all the other researchers?
Are they going to Why is the blast door
closed slowly if it's important?
>> Oh, dude. Running across there. Holy
[ __ ] You kidding me?
>> Yeah. Jeez.
>> Why would that not just turn off?
>> I might not want to stop.
>> Why would you stop halfway through?
>> Uh, what are we doing?
>> I have no idea what that hardlight
bridge is connected to and when it's
going to turn off.
>> Oh, come on.
>> Are they actually going to fall off
because of that?
>> It looks like they should.
>> Oh, this is so [ __ ]
>> How did you know to jump? I guess you
just do it at the end, [laughter] but
you know, they want you to
>> The door closed anyway.
>> Oh, look at that door closing right on
time.
>> Look, the quarantine programs are
They're not great. They're not great,
guys.
>> So, what was all of like Why did the
glass crack?
>> It's beautiful. It's spreading. It's
their history.
>> OH, NO. THEY ARE. THEY'RE doing the
flooding.
>> Wow. They are. That's insane.
>> Oh, look. It's the flood.
>> What's wrong? It's real.
>> It's honestly, it's going to be like the
you want season 3 cuz we're going to do
the flood fully.
>> It really is. It is. I can't believe it.
I'm sorry.
>> They're going to flood BEFORE THEY'VE
EVEN GOTTEN TO HALO. [laughter]
>> Tell me you got it.
>> It's just speed running Halo.
>> I like how there's just three chicks
here and not like human scientists. And
>> they were before.
>> Yeah. The whole team are just not there.
>> I guess they all just left. Yay. Back to
>> Johnny Bunny.
>> Yeah, that was a wild decision.
>> And that's going to get him nothing, is
it? He's doomed.
>> You'll get his little boss fight before
the end, right? Yeah, but he's he's
definitely not making it out of this
season. No way. [laughter]
>> He's going to join he's got to join the
core team. They need a representative
alien on the team.
>> Dude, we just killed a bunch of people
for you. What the [ __ ]
>> I thought he like kind of didn't like
her. Was tolerating her for usefulness.
>> Seemed that way, but I guess not. He
actually really really likes her. Don't
know why.
>> Yeah, watch Mickey have sex with
Arbiter.
>> Why not? Let's do it.
Why' you
>> I was kidding, but now
>> she's giving her the arbiter scar.
It's
>> going to hurt a lot. Wait, what?
>> Oh, that's so gross. She stole Arbiters.
She stole his symbol.
>> I can't believe it. That's so [ __ ] up.
>> I am bound to bound you. Oh my god.
They're going to actually make him like
a pair.
>> Oh my god. Just when you think it can't
get stupider, it does. It's like it's
waiting for you to dare it and then it
does.
>> Meanwhile, Sord's just out here chilling
out.
>> He's been waiting for like an action
scene, I think. Right.
>> Yeah. He's He's here to watch a movie.
>> His son to a fight.
>> You got this, champ.
>> What is this?
>> What? I don't even know what this is.
>> He's saving his son, Rags.
>> I I guess this is weird. So, in Spartan
training is you go into this thing and
there's some guys in orange jumpsuits
and it's misty and foggy and they hit
you with sticks. What's the point of the
fog if you're all blind?
>> It's cinematic.
>> It's me.
>> Hey,
>> why are you He beat up the guys who are
going to beat you up?
>> He's You're too scary.
>> Sorry.
>> What is happening?
>> Why did you grab him when the
>> Oh, no. She's into the fog.
>> Uh, you're not going to beat him. He's a
spot in there.
>> All right. Well, they didn't bait him.
Okay,
>> but they've been taken to the fog world.
>> Looks fake.
>> Nice suit.
>> Yay. He's got a suit on. The fans
rejoice. This is only episode seven of
season 2.
>> How are you alive?
>> I could ask the same thing about you.
>> No, you couldn't. You bore our head on a
ship and fly away.
>> Yeah, you went through 17 layers of
horseshit to somehow be alive at this
point.
>> You're coming with us.
>> Yeah, we're going to get blown up before
we
>> so much shorter than him.
>> He's so tiny.
>> I'm I'm a spot myself.
>> He's like, "Oh, really? It's great."
>> Kai is pretty tall, you know, and
they're fairly tall, but she's tiny.
>> Yeah. I think she's just a small girl in
general, but he's already a huge guy.
When the battle ends, they don't talk
about the ones who don't come home.
>> Uh, excuse me. They do talk about the
people who don't come home. Lest we
forget.
[music]
>> Our victory. Your victory was so close.
I wish you could have lived to see it.
>> Your father's actions were in keeping
with the highest traditions of military
service. His bravery in the face of
impossible odds reflects great credit
upon himself and the UNC. The Navy has
lost one of its best. As we start to
[music] rebuild, this hillside will
remain barren. A memorial to heroes
fallen.
They enbled all of us and they shall not
be forgotten.
>> They just call it a victory and say it
was BECAUSE OF ME.
>> LIAR. SO, IS HE GOING TO TELL HER TO NOT
go on the mission or does she have to
go?
>> She has to join team Halo.
>> That woman made you flip that coin all
those times. Was it lock or did you make
it come up heads?
>> How would he make it come up heads?
>> Did she see that he is telekinetic?
>> Something you can't see, but you feel it
moving through you.
>> To call it correct 11 times is I don't
believe
>> they're not No. Come on, Mark. They're
not actually going to set up the psychic
[laughter] powers, are they?
>> Why not? That slots in the rest of the
show. Is she the one that's been
consistently a pretty good actress
throughout all this?
>> Yes, she's the best one considerably.
>> She's notable. Again, in this scene, you
can tell she's acting.
>> It's a shame to have her spouting
nonsense, but she's [ __ ] trying. If
you didn't know that John Halo was the
main character of Halo, you'd be
confused why she isn't the main
character.
>> I suppose it does.
>> This is something they stolen from that
site. So, is this flood?
>> Did they tell everyone that there was
like a 4Runner body there that was
mummified?
>> You think that they would have mentioned
to a lot of people what was down there?
They have a lot to
>> explanike
body
>> found in an ancient alien city like
underground.
>> It might be the key which activates
Halo. Kind of looks similar to it. Why
would that be here?
>> Why not? [clears throat] Because that's
why that's what it is.
>> Why wouldn't it be here?
>> That's the index. [ __ ] it. Whatever.
>> Shouldn't be here. She's a fugitive.
>> Have you tried moving it slightly?
[laughter]
>> Oh, Hollyy left.
>> Wow, that was Leave in the middle of
this.
It feels like everyone's waiting for the
last episode cuz they can't do anything
this episode.
>> I don't have the money.
>> Oh my god. Master Chief, you're wanted
in like 17 planets for murder and
assault and espionage and
>> Look, it's that guy that killed all our
friends in the woods.
>> No, he only horribly maimed them. That's
all.
>> Hooray.
>> What about the Spartan 3s? They trusted
me. I told them they could win.
>> Yeah, but you knew you were [ __ ]
when you said that.
>> You're both terrible.
>> Wasn't the point of that the whole
section of scenes? remember he gave them
an easy out because he thought they, you
know, was trying to recommend and stuff.
>> It's amazing. The show is making me
actively root for the Covenant. It's
This is wild.
>> Well, they've shown way more of the
infighting and duplicity within the UNCC
then they've just shown the clear and
present threat that is the Covenant.
>> In this case, it's hard to root for the
Covenant because I barely have any
understanding of what the Covenant is
beyond zombies that run around going
pretty much. And we haven't even gotten
the flood yet.
>> I just want this entire universe
destroyed. I'm rooting for the flood.
>> Yeah, let's root for the flood. This is
Master Chief John 117.
>> Boy, finally everything.
[groaning]
>> Get it out of your head. He's not
coming.
>> I You cannot see my expression at all.
Just
>> They love doing the in helmet shot. They
love it, don't they?
>> They've not brought back John Hal. No,
they're not doing the Iron Man one.
They're doing that one. And they don't
do it for John Halo because they're not
allowed to anymore.
>> I was meing, but he really didn't put on
his helmet as episodes, too.
>> No. No. We got to see his face. We got
to see his expressions.
>> Wow. You're right. It's a modern day
quarter.
It's just a coin from 500 years ago.
It's an ancient artifact from Earth's
past. It's priceless.
>> Oh. Um, this might be a bad idea.
>> He's flying directly towards the coveted
fleet. Is he?
328 on
>> Oh, this is so epic.
>> 60 seconds to jump. Good luck, Spartans.
>> Hopefully, we won't get destroyed.
>> Yeah,
>> I'm confused why they would have any
chance at all.
>> There's like a whole Covenant fleet and
they know you you're coming. They
destroyed the first Spartans. They all
died within like 10 seconds.
>> Oh, it's Halo, right? Where is it?
[music]
>> Hey,
he flew there in a pelican.
>> Oh, it's just there. That was bad. There
it is. They're in action everybody. They
>> He flew there in a pelican.
>> Yeah,
>> we did it. No, it isn't.
>> This is embarrassing.
>> This is actually embarrassing. This
truly is embarrassing.
>> One more left. Just one more to go. Just
one more. We're almost there at the
finish line about this episode. It was a
complete waste of time. It was just them
[ __ ] around because they just have to
fill time until they get to the finale
where things can actually happen. It's a
bunch of crazy mumbo jumbo blah blah
lore story. This is how things
happening. Setup flood hope for the
third season to exist.
>> It's like 48 minutes of please don't
cancel us.
>> I now very much get that vibe with the
flood. That definitely sounds like Come
on, just give us season 3. Let us at
least finish it with season 3. All
right, come on. Just give us another
season. I beg you. I implore you. I
insist. Please.
They've committed to keeping his helmet
off. Do you think they have
conversations when making the seasons
like, "Man, this is the right decision,
right?" And they go, "Yeah, yeah, it's
the right decision." Yeah. Yeah. It's
better. They'll realize. They'll
realize.
>> Actually, actually, it turns out it
didn't even fit him. It doesn't fit on
his giant head.
>> My guess is that they would have had
conversations like, "Look, those are
just little [ __ ] video game players,
right? We're the writers who went to
film school. We've read all the books
and this is the way that you do it. You
got to see their face. You got to have
that human connection there." You know,
>> there's a screen actors guild
requirement to have like a certain
amount of facetime, isn't there? That's
why like helmeted characters always have
scenes.
>> Oh yeah, you have exceptions, right? One
of the most commendable ones is Carly
and deciding not to have his [ __ ]
clear star power be referenced in Dread
at all. He kept it on for the whole
thing. That's such a cool aspect. And
this would have been cool to do it here.
I would have had respect for the
production somewhat if they' kept his
helmet on, you know, shockingly
throughout the whole thing. We never see
his face. It would have been really
cool.
>> I imagine it was just never even on the
cards. If it was an animated show, they
probably would have done it. If it was
animated, I imagine there just would
have been less of that thinking we got
to see their face. We need to make sure
the actor gets his face seen and her
face seen. We need to we need to do
that. If it was an animated show, there
probably would have been a lot of
decisions that they would have made
differently just by virtue of the medium
that would have been more in line with
what the games have to offer. They would
have had Covenant POV characters who
were actually aliens cuz they probably
would have thought it's all animation.
It's not like it's any more or less
taxing from a visual effects standpoint
to have scenes with elites or grunts or
anything like that. We can have him in
his helmet the whole time because nobody
like it would just never be called into
question if it was animation. Just like
it's never called to question in the
games, but in live action, there's just
something going on in the big old brain
that like makes people I guess on this
show think we got to see his face a lot.
>> For a very wooden actor, too.
>> Yeah, he's not good. Um
>> yeah, he really isn't good. I mean, no
one really is. A couple
>> except for again the actress who plays
Perez. She's like notably better than
everybody else.
>> Got a good career ahead of her that one.
Yeah.
>> Well, she's tied to this show, so
>> who knows for how much longer this show
is going to last? Cuz now I'm feeling
very much like season if they got a
season 3, that would be the last one
they'd get. They'd tell them this is
>> they're going to do badly again. Even if
they do get a three,
>> why would there be any expectation at
this point when we've had Well, you
know, it'll be 17 by the time the
season's over. 17 episodes of piss.
>> I know exactly what the CO explanation
is going to be for the people that get
excited about season 3. It's just like,
yeah, but now they're actually on
>> Halo. We got to watch this.
>> Finally,
>> they've 1,000% messed up. Even just the
basic premise of Halo C.
>> It was over with Halo season 1, episode
1. It was already over. The notion that
there was any course correction after
that was kind of a pipe dream. Uh, and
certainly by the end of season 1 with
everything that had happened in that
season, there was no world where you
were going to get your faithful Halo
adaptation. It's an impossibility. It
wouldn't make any sense if it was
faithful. If it was faithful, it would
create a whole bunch of continuity
errors.
>> The first episode of the first season
already cemented very clearly that this
is not Halo. This is just [ __ ] to
tell the story that they want to make
up. It's going to be a bastardization
through and through. It's obvious from
the first episode.
>> That last shot reflecting the Halo in
his eyes just being like, "Isn't this
just pure art right now? Look at it.
This is incredible." Like, shut up.
>> This isn't yours. You took it. You took
it and then you put it in here.
Scrambled it. No. The visual
storytelling is very much garbage in
this show.
>> Isn't it crazy to think that three
episodes prior Reach got destroyed and
now they're here with Spartan 3 is going
to Halo. Like right now you got one
episode for the fall of Reach and now
we're already here with a massive battle
between Spartan 3s and an entire
Covenant fleet as John Halo is going to
reunite with Mackie on Halo. The Pillar
of Autumn was supposed to be this like
spec ops mission where it was going to
be one of the UNC's first attempts to
invade Covenant Space and that's why the
Master Chief was on it and they had all
this all this gear on it and then like
right as they were about to take off on
that mission they were going to send
like tons of Spartans in on it. Reach
got invaded and so they had to escape
with whatever they had and they just
ended up at Halo. Whereas here it's like
actually we knew it was a weapon and we
knew about the flood and we're racing
the Covenant to get there. I think it's
a really perfect indication of the
danger of adapting where if you think of
it as like a Jenga tower copying the top
half fully. That would be like the
aesthetics and stuff, but then the
bottom half they've only taken a few
bricks and the whole thing was just
already ready to topple and they don't
understand why. It's like, well, this is
our own version. We're doing our own
thing. It's like, yeah, but by taking
pieces, none of it fits together
anymore. Nothing makes any [ __ ]
sense. So the people who do it well
right are when you adapt and you take a
brick out but you you know understand
why the brick was there and you put your
own brick back in to make sure that
everything is
>> rather than taking the bricks out and
then just putting like a plastic bowl
there instead and then it's just a bunch
of plastic bowls and cutlery like you
got some forks to hold up the bricks
like we're doing it too
>> don't get renewed they're like how did
this happen [laughter]
>> you know what whose fault it was it was
the fans and their unreasonable
expectations
>> well Uh, Halo season 2 episode 7. See
you for the finale.
>> That's right, everyone.
>> I'm so excited to go to the finale.
We'll see you there.
>> Excited.
[screaming]
>> You're okay.
>> SHUT THE [ __ ] UP, YOU YOU DONKEY.
>> WHAT'D YOU BRING ME?
>> SLAM SAUCE. OKAY.
