Oh my god, Reach. Remember Reach? >> That sounds full of Reach. >> This whole show is a Reach. >> I suppose what's interesting is that there would be greater expectations for this one than there would be for any given regular episode because it's Reach, the fall of Reach. Uh, Halo season 2, episode 4. I'm excited. I want to see all the hubbub is about. Well, not all the hub. No one's talking about the show, but like splatic hub, sporadic discord. What's interesting will be if the perception is, oh, this is the good one. It's like, what does that mean really? Is it that it's absolutely and utterly riveting? Or is it that they will throw everything that they can at you to convince you to like them? Oh, look, there's elites. Oh, look. Jackals and grunts. That's exciting. Brutes. Wow. Hunters. I'm curious about what >> I want to see a suicide grunt blow up a child >> as the midpoint of the season. And then they've also just got that he is the character that I think is the best in the uh in the show overall. What about What do you think about Keys? >> Captain Keys's adopted father. because we we have not seen Miranda Keys at all. She was in season one and she has disappeared. So, I don't know what that's about. But I wonder about him if he's going to make it out. Especially with the conversation that they had in the last episode of like I'm not leaving, you know? I'm not leaving Reach. That feels like they're ramping up to something, you know? >> But he's Keys like he is going to leave Reach, right? >> But remember adaptation. So that they're going to deviate rags. Why would you even say that? Look how much they've deviated already. I'm thinking if they're trying to if they're trying to do the reach thing and the game stuff and the remember this, I feel like they're going to try and keep him. >> Yeah. To support like what is saying like this season feels like it's trying a little harder to be more liked. >> I wouldn't be surprised, but I also kind of would be surprised if they kill him. It wouldn't surprise me if they replace his character on Halo with his daughter. >> They were replaced in totality, including Miranda getting subsumed by the flood. >> Well, I mean, yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah, he he has to die in Halo 1 so she can be there and that that's what they would consider a very minor detail. She can easily survive the events of Halo. >> That's the smoking gun right there. Because he's the captain of the Pillar of Autumn, right? >> We might not even see the Pillar of Autumn because in keeping with the 343 tradition of much worse names for ships, they had a ship in season one that was just called the Gladius. Have a >> They're going to name drop the pillar of autumn. They're going to have Noble Team. I don't think there's going to be Noble Team. The fact that we haven't seen Noble Team so far means I don't think they'll be on the radio at some point. We got to name them. No one's That's true. They'll have a different name for them. >> Really surprised if we saw any of the Spartans from Noble Team. >> That would be weird given all the nostalgia baiting stuff that they wouldn't even have like a correction. Plus, it would muddy things to reference Spartan 3s with the whole Hoy plot line. >> That could make it more complicated because they don't want to deal with that anymore evidently. >> Didn't Hoy not have anything to do with the Spartan 3s cuz they're >> Yeah, but that would confuse people. >> And remember, things are very different even though there are aspects of the Spartan program in the book that have been translated over. There are major deviations still and we've dropped that as a subplot of really dealing with the Spartan program and the ethics of that program and how the Spartans felt about it. that's just been dropped as a plot point. And I imagine that they feel that they don't even have time for it anymore with all of this other [ __ ] that they're doing with the Quan subplot, which I'm guessing we're not going to see them this episode. That'd be my guess. >> Here's hoping, but I I don't know. I I could see them just being like, "And now that we're in the middle of this super tense invasion, here's what Quan's up to." >> That's entirely possible. It was so tonally inconsistent as well, jumping between dramatic high octane action set pieces and like, "Oh my god, this is horrible, too." Oh, just standing around in an elevator having a little chat. Oh, it's a little quiet. Having a little chat here about other unrelated things and then just back to the crazy action again. It's so annoying that the Covenant have actually just been turned into mindless automatons that just run forward into oncoming enemy fire that they don't employ any tactics at all. >> There's no combined arms really. We haven't seen carbines. We haven't seen fuel rod guns. We haven't seen grunts. NO GRUNTS. [screaming] >> We've seen jackals, though. >> No hunters. >> Plenty of jackals. >> No brutes. >> But this is also the in the season that Master Chief has been saved from certain death by McKe just getting there and being like, "No, no, no. He's gone." >> It's because they're still doing the crazy prophecy. I see the future. We need him cuz then it'll Halo and everything and we're part of this grand prophecy. They're still continuing with that, which leads to destruction in terms of this show's continuity because how can you construct a mystery of like, oh, we're magically connected and we're being guided to Halo. We're being guided to the weapon that if we use it, it will kill us. I don't know why they've still got Mackie in this story. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea. >> Yeah, because she is in this. She's not in it as much as season one by a long stretch. >> Guys, you don't understand. He got 11 heads in a row and that means that anything can happen in order to facilitate. Honestly, at this point, I'm starting to wonder if like in the case of Keys, it's just like, "Yeah, can you write me out? Like, I don't really want to do this anymore." >> The thing is, like, especially the [ __ ] fan reaction, like some of the people, I think when they made this, they were like, "We did it, right? This is what you guys were looking for." And I love that all of us sitting here like, "What the [ __ ] was that?" >> This show can never be what I want. There's no getting around that. This season is the proof, even more so than season 1, that it's just never going to be what I would want it to be. >> This season lost the game the second it was clear that they weren't basically treating it as a full reboot. They obviously were like, "Shit, everyone hated season one. [ __ ] We got to do something different." But I guarantee the people who made this are going to be happy to see the reaction to this episode. >> It's kind of muted though. >> Well, that's still more than what they usually get is kind of where I'm at with that. >> In terms of presenting the Fall of Reach on the big screen with all of your money and and of course, we haven't even like production-wise that was rough. There was a lot of bad visual effects in this this episode. >> Yeah, they jangled keys. They didn't jangle as anywhere near as many as they could have or as effectively as they could have. And yet the keys they did jangle has distracted a lot of people. I think >> they had John Halo pick up an energy sword and then instantly get >> to [ __ ] use it. I don't know in the trailer that that's why they wanted that shot but then they just >> they didn't want to have a fight with it. It's like uh Mhler said they could have jangled the keys way more. Imagine if you just had another Spartan shop and it's just like I'm Carter. I'm here. >> Absolutely. That's like it doesn't matter cuz I couldn't even I can't even tell that that [ __ ] elite he was fighting was any different than any of the other I didn't know that a little Yeah, he's a little different. >> I thought that was like a a sub like a mini boss. >> No, that's the arbiter. >> It doesn't look like the Arbiter's armor. We need some drama with Cortana, who for some baffling reason. We don't know what to do with her." And John Halo said that he kind of missed Cortana. So, what we got to have is we just got to find some way to allow her to be captured to enable that to be drama that they can carry through probably until the season finale when they finally go and get her and then they have Halo or something. They made her a damsel >> pretty much. >> I mean, this show's pretty based. >> In my hand, I have the Halo graphic novel, Marvel, Bungie, Microsoft Game Studios. No 343 logo in sight. It's really, really good. For those who don't have it, one of the I think the last one of the four comics that are in here is Second Sunrise over New Mombasa. The main character of this story is essentially a UNC PR guy/propagandist, and it's about him being in the city while it gets invaded. It shows like civilians getting their guns and helping to fight the Covenant and the military out there as well. It talks about all sorts of stuff that he has to do to try and paint a picture for PR purposes of how, you know, humans are fighting valiantly and things aren't as bad as they really are. It shows the panic of the situation of civilians trying to get on boats and trying to escape the city. It's really, really good. And so when I when I remember comics like that that I've read many many years ago and still kind of stick with me as being really cool Halo stories from the perspective of someone who is just a non-combatant entirely. And then I look at what happens when these massive studios with their gajillions of dollars get a hold of Halo and essentially tell a parallel story and how bad that is. It's nothing short of a of a damn shame and a crime that they had all this opportunity to do something with the Halo universe and they have squandered it. It's fun to make fun of, but it I do [ __ ] hate this show. >> It joins the halls of the hallowed legendary franchises in their graves. >> The first five Halo games and, you know, even Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2 to a degree do have this level, this great level of, you know, respect and admiration from people and they'll be timeless classics forever. And this really does seem to just like with the Star Wars, just like with the Marvel stuff, just like with all sorts of things, it's all in the gutter now. >> Hyper incompetence and just a complete misunderstanding of the source clearly. It's just it's it's like we can take this this thing that other people made and use it as our sandbox for our own shitty science fiction. >> They do the thing where you're like are you doing your own thing? All of these things that are really easy to market to try and lure in people who wouldn't be interested in your story were it not for the IP that you were handed to use as a conduit for your own shitty story. He has to press two buttons. >> And and all of the jackals just have to stand there and just let him go. >> They're just so enamored with him standing there and pressing a couple of buttons that they have to allow themselves to get blown up because none of the Covenant have any self-preservation instincts. They don't have brains. >> If you watch the show, you would get the idea that the Covenant are just mindless zombies who run forward to get shot at, >> which is going to be really weird when they introduce the [ __ ] zombies of this world. >> Well, they're going to nail that part. I bet you the gravemind will be like a human as well. The grave sexy girl. But I got to imagine that it is less successful because season 1 had the advantage of nobody knew what it was. Season 2 has the massive disadvantage of everybody hated season 1. And then you've just got the problem that Halo is just in the worst place it's ever been. you have like the onetwo punch of Halo Infinite is a big disappointment and the show sucks and those come together and now it's at a place where like why the [ __ ] why would you expect anybody to give a [ __ ] about Halo at this point and especially now that you have The Last of Us come out as like the comparison of what happens when their main competitor PlayStation has their own big budget adaptation of their flagship franchise that >> ends up hyper successful that show focusing heavily on two characters and they gave us a lot of content for them. this one. Like, [ __ ] me. It's hard to >> There's like 17 half characters. >> I guess they just genuinely didn't think that they could develop enough of a story line with just John Halo, which with how they've characterized him, he can't carry a show. >> The acting is pretty pretty bad. The uh >> there's like a highlight or two in terms of people trying >> occasionally. >> Like I mean, even even John Halo when when Guy dies, he's like, "No, >> I don't get the sense that he's not trying. It's just that trying in service of a vision that is like fundamentally warped. Again, if you separate Halo as a franchise, as an intellectual property, and you strip it away from this show, what exactly would this show have to offer that would be so captivating and riveting that people would be interested in watching it? >> I think by this time, like Halo fans, we're pretty s were inoculated, I guess, against just, you know, the quality of Halo. >> See what you can get. I think that could explain why the reaction to this episode is positive because after like a decade of of misery when it comes to what's been happening with Halo, you're at a point where you can take what you can get. And really, the only people who are left are people who are like quite invested in the series. A lot of the casual fans have moved on. >> I found an image from the episode that summarizes what it feels like to be a Halo fan. >> That's legitimately [laughter] true. >> People say like Halo, the second Halo 2 comes out, people say, "Oh, Halo 1 was so much better, worse, one ever." the second Halo 3 comes out, they say, "Oh, Halo 2 was actually not that bad, but Halo 3 sucks." And then the next and basically people jump to the next one. And there actually is at least a small group of people who have been trying to say that Halo 5 is good. You people are wrong. >> I don't like this like rewriting of history. Yeah, people thought Halo 3 sucked. No, they didn't. A phenomenon like no other. >> Sure. But the idea that it was just a matter of the new thing everybody didn't like, it's like, no, something has changed in the the management of this series and it coincides with the original studio moving on to do something else and the reigns being handed over to 343. I I just cannot unsee the attitude of we're better in terms of our storytelling capacity. Those games, you know, they were fun, but we're the ones who got like the riveting drama. Meanwhile, this game that was made by a team of like what 40 people on the original game with no professional screenwriters working on it managed to craft a more compelling universe than they managed to create with all of the resources that they could ever ask for to realize their vision. >> Well, and I would also say that a lot of it is able to stand on its own as individual pieces of media compared to this show which is very dependent on you recognize this imagery, you recognize this place, you recognize these events. I don't think this show stands particularly well on its own. That's the thing that I want to consistently emphasize. As its own story divorced from Halo, it is absolutely broken to the core, terrible characterization, horrendous world building, an absolute nonsense plot, and incredibly thematically confused. It sucking so much. And then having Halo off there just ripe to be adapted in film or television, live action or animated. It's immensely frustrating. What is the point in even speculating on what's going to happen going forward? Anything can happen. It's just absolute nonsense. You're like, "Oh, oh, oh, this feels like a death scene." It's fallen off a cliff is is what's happened with this episode. I feel like this has collapsed everything. Even all the new stuff that they were trying to build up in this season, it's like, "Oh, now that's gone. Those foundations are gone."
