Oh my god, pew pew pew pew pew pew smoking Aces. Woo. >> Oh my god, I'm smoking out of my Aces. >> Ooh, that's Oh. >> that mean? Welcome to a very random off the just for no reason at all. We're checking out the film called Smokin' Aces. One of the main things is this one of those movies that arrived at the right time for a whole bunch of people to be in it, I guess cuz everyone's friends with each other or something, but also because not everybody is as famous as they're going to be. Those who don't know, okay, this movie it stars Ryan Reynolds, Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Chris Pine, Nestor I think his name's Nestor Carbonell. He's he's the mayor from The Dark Knight, probably known from that. Jeremy Piven, Ben Affleck, uh Common, who if you don't know him, he's he's the he's the guy that John Wick fights in the second John Wick film as an assassin. Uh Alicia Keys >> that are shooting each other while they're walking through the through the train station. >> That's the one. Joel Edgerton, Jason Bateman, Matthew Fox of Lost fame, if you don't know him. Kevin Durand, who's was the Blob in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, that guy, he's in loads of stuff. And then the other guy I assume is less known for a lot of people, but seems Tommy Flanagan. You'll know him because he has the I think it's called the Glasgow smile. He's got a scar on either side of his uh his his mouth. He's in loads of stuff as well. He's in AVP. Remember him? Yeah, you remember you remember. >> Get off. We've been wearing your ass for a hat. >> As well as like some other bits and bobs of people, but it's just like a crazy cast of Oh my god, I recognize so many of these people. And uh the premise itself, I think, is more than enough to just be like, "Oh yeah, that that sounds like fun." So, as long as they don't screw everything up, you know, could be a could be a could be a blast. We're just probably just going to watch the movie and talk about it as we go through. There is a Smokin' Aces 2. Not as good. >> Uh yeah, that era of direct-to-DVD sequels. Oh, no. >> Yeah, you'll see as we go through this, too. It's very much a 2000s film Uh shocking nobody but it's uh It's just It's just been interesting as the years go by how much the 2000s have their own style for sure. We're waiting to discover this conversation's been had is like I wonder what the 2020s will be and the assumption now is that it'll be the decade of no style as in that's what its style will be. It's this this bland sludgy gray mass of nothingness. No one wants to stand out sort of thing and that's the connective piece of it. >> We've only got x amount of time before we're out of the 2020s so >> Just fingers crossed. >> you all enjoyed the 2020s. >> Yeah. >> true? And then it became this thing of he hates Trevor. He hates GTA. Don't call him Trevor. He'll freak out. And it's just people believe So, those kind of comments don't bother me because I'm like, "You don't [ __ ] know me." >> But before I get to one more thing to probably bring it up, Primo wants Israel's heart. >> What did you just say? >> Israel's heart. >> You got to get him some flowers or something if you want to, you know, chocolate. It's going to get a little more complicated. There's some twists. Just they'll sell you on the simple premise, but then by the end of the film they're like, "Actually, it was this this this." He does a good job whenever he turns up, I think. >> Do you ever wonder if the more wacky the characters someone plays, the the harder it actually makes it for people to recognize them? That somebody sort of becomes a character actor. >> I feel like Joel Edgerton, for example, in this movie, no one knows he's in this cuz he's >> Yeah, I guess what I mean is like does that the fact that you're almost more likely or more willing to commit to like a wacky role makes you less recognizable than if you always play sort of the straight man protagonist in everything? >> It's almost like if you're strange enough, you burst back into everyone knowing it was you cuz it's so iconic or something like kind of like Heath Ledger's Joker where it's like holy [ __ ] that was him. >> [snorts] >> He did that. >> Maybe if you play a certain brand of strange character in everything rather than being really >> Well, yeah, I guess that would be a Johnny Depp, right? >> I guess that is kind of an interesting example, actually. >> no, man. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, that would uh that would [ __ ] you up. No matter how long they are, there usually be an action scene right at the very beginning, then you get one about 20 minutes later, 30 minutes later, then you'll get like another one about 40 minutes later, and then 20 minutes later you would get the last one. There's tweaks that need to be made, but this is What's What's crazy is there's enough that works in like every aspect of filmmaking. There's also things that do not work at all in every aspect of filmmaking. >> weird is but like that they chose to make the bit that didn't really work kind of the core of the story. Certainly at the end. >> Yeah, I think they made a mistake in when you make it about that. They thought they were a serious film with wacky elements when they should have been a wacky film. Just full on. >> That whole That whole last bit just get rid of it. Get rid of it. Get rid of it. Yeah, the agent backstory with Sperazza and everything. Just cut it. Just have Israel be the guy they're trying to get the mob informant. You got the feds who want him for this. You got the hit men who want him for that. And you have them all converge and then wacky shenanigans ensue. And that's all you need. No need to complicate it. No need to have Ryan Reynolds yelling for medics. >> [laughter] >> The scene in the elevator that probably gets the most successfully serious like of anything they try to pull off in this movie with the the two fellows and the tension and stuff. But you could probably still put that in a wacky movie. >> You want to have a little bit of a an an up and a down with seriousness, you know, to >> Yeah, like it's okay to have things get a little bit more real. It's just like let's not have like a long extended sequence with Ryan Reynolds having to try and be like a serious like performance and >> [laughter] >> If we switched him out for someone more suited in this era, we'd assume still be asking to cut those scenes. >> but I would prefer yeah, cuz the best parts is when you've got like Chris Pine being like a [ __ ] wacky >> Yeah, he's awesome. >> Oh, yeah. Very entertaining. Just sort of generally having crazy stuff happen and surprises play out rather than getting serious about the plot. >> It's also like it's a huge ensemble piece with a lot of wacky characters, but then for quite a bit at the end it's like oh, I guess he was the main guy. Okay. >> It does it does last a while that ending portion. >> like he was the main guy, but all right. >> [music] [music] >> If you were going to pick one you know, he gets the POV for a lot of the the the audience POV shots rather the the storyline following of of trying to understand what the [ __ ] is going on. It's it is him, but every there are so many people that it gets split down. I think that it probably would have been a better idea to just commit to that concept completely. I like the idea of an a tower and a whole bunch of crazy killers all coming to it to get to the top to kill the guy. >> that's a cool idea. Like the the overall sort of ambition, if it was a little bit more skewed towards the wacky stuff, I think would get me to feel more positive about about the whole thing. Whereas right now it's like, yeah, no, I feel positive about parts of it. >> I think this actually matches as well the whole like So, this would have been the kind of movie that happens to pop out, you see it, and you're like, "Hm, you know, there's there's plusses and negatives, blah blah blah." But the equivalent release of these days can't score anywhere near what this has got, which is kind of crazy. >> No, this it is it's positive, it's unfortunate, right? Cuz you look at this is like, yeah, this is a product of its time, and that's like kind of a good thing because they were more swinging for the fences like wacky [ __ ] Whereas it feels like now something like this, there's not even really a space for it because if it was like an A24 thing, it would take itself a lot more seriously than even this one does. >> Yeah. >> Possibly to its detriment. When I think of the other guy, I go, and then he just has sort of a blank expression. That's almost like how I feel about the way that a lot of movies now were >> Yeah. >> shot. Because it's really bizarre and wacky uh compared to again, I don't know, yeah, I feel I feel like that's almost the strongest impression this movie has made is is just reminding me of how boring a lot of uh >> [laughter] >> specifically like Netflix, Amazon Prime, like straight-to-streaming sort of movies look like where it's just like no style at all, almost by design because a style might alienate people. >> Yeah. >> So, it's better to do something that alienates alienates nobody but makes an impression on nobody either. >> It is unfortunate how much people have figured out, so to speak, of like what we have to do and how things are done, and it's it's killing everything. This this whole having figured it out thing. >> Also an inspired choice for that bit where he's using him like a marionette. Like how long it goes on for really works, actually. It's kind of a risky little thing to do to stretch that scene out for so long, but it's really funny. >> Just seeing some actors in here doing things you wouldn't expect them to do, notwithstanding Ryan Reynolds. >> Well, that also feels almost like a product of its time, right? Of maybe just more of a willingness to participate in something this strange. Where it's like, what what what are you doing, Chris Pine? You're just going to be You're going to be playing like a [ __ ] crazy guy compared to I guess what you know he's been doing lately of the sort of the leading man style. Like, yeah, look at me. I'm like a charismatic leading man as opposed to like a pretty off-putting repulsive, you know, fiend. It's like, yeah, that's fine. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds is just like, yeah, no, I'm I'm like the protagonist, man. Look at me go. >> He is protagonist, but that's the other problem I'd say I'd say to the Ryan Reynolds and the the screen time is the It's like the character is just He's just Goodman. I I will do I will >> he almost stands out paradoxically stands out in the worst way possible in a story that has an ensemble cast of very Like, you know, compared to Jason Bateman, right?
