Oh, uh, something I wanted to make sure I mentioned on one of the catch-ups, so it'll it'll sort of work in, but we were talking about Clayface, uh, in a trailer reaction, and we were asking like like speculate on Clayface's appearances in games and [ __ ] And, uh, I said I remembered him from Arkham Asylum, but other than that, I'm not sure if he turns up in anything. And then I saw a comment underneath it. I was like, "Fucking hell, how did I miss that?" Clayface is technically the boss of Arkham City. He's playing as Joker, right? He does it all the time. He's actually like more media obsessed than most people realize. He kind of implied, you know, he does play a lot of pinball. That's probably There's probably a connection there somehow. Pinball is a form of media. Yeah. >> Fun fact, Angela Del Toro is referenced in a throwaway line in Jessica Jones season 1 as a detective that someone should meet, but season one of this show makes it so that she's a teenager, meaning they indirectly made her the youngest detective in the world. Oh, that's funny. >> That is funny. An hour behind because I was watching Buffy season 1, episode 3, The Witch, recently started from the beginning again. So endearingly bad. Season 1 does have its charm, but yes, >> it's bad. In Project Hail Mary, Rocky has a better grasp of his environment with just enhanced hearing than freaking Daredevil does in this show, >> uh, with all his enhanced senses. Yep. >> Correct. >> Kind of annoying. Uh, what is your biggest criticism you have of Buffy as a show? Probably will building. It's a >> world building is not right. >> It's bad from the moment you start like like significantly like they don't account for a bunch of things. >> Yeah. >> Uh, the watchers never get the world building they need to that it's a bit of a lack I'd say cuz it would have helped the show a lot. And then >> I find the history quite interesting. The nature of like demons, vampires, and how they interact with people. And it's a shame that they clearly don't give a [ __ ] about it. in terms of making it make any sense. The only the only time it's interesting or taken with serious care is when it's going to be reflecting characters and stuff in the plot. And so you can tell where the priorities are. And I'm not saying they're bad priorities, but it's such a shame that not more time was given cuz the Buffy will building could be really [ __ ] cool if you uh spend a bit more time. And it does have repercussions. And they do try to account for some stuff. It is funny as I've been going through with Gary, we've been noting the uh the little moments in the show where they're like trying to fix things. It's just not not great at fixing. Um have to prove there are guns. $50 for scuba rental. No, don't worry about it. Nobody found anything. I legitimately only know like 70% of these characters through Osmosis of the show. So, when you say you know 70% of the characters, do you mean like like are they talking about like Cherry, like people like that? >> Uh, well, I mean, does he 70% of the cast is him? [laughter] >> Just finished watching a night of the Seven Kingdoms for the third time. I like May car more every time. Need more characters like that and more shows like that in general. Yeah. >> Yep. >> Please be Please be good. season 2, you know, a different um Song of Ice and Fire related show didn't end up so uh so wonderful in that respect. Yeah. >> Platoon was hacked. Yeah. I mean I mean like when he hugs the doctor to death. Yeah. >> That's insane. >> That's so dumb. >> Uh so the nostalgia shots are the cameos of this series. There's lots of shitty cameos in the forms of >> That's that's But yes, I think that's a good way of thinking about it. The the nostalgia, you know, like, oh, we shot it and it has like similar lighting and and aspect ratio or something. So that's like you like us. And that worked for people. That worked for a lot. Well, it worked in so far as they said that they liked it even though they'll never watch it again, including like the expected sort of losers. You know who I'm talking about. >> You know who I'm talking about. I've been [laughter] watching only the Matt Karen Bullseye and Fisk scenes and it's bizarre to watch without all the plot dough people. I will say >> a lot of the show by doing that. >> Not only did I knock out a chunk, but it's funny. out of those four, you'll be seeing Fisk like [ __ ] 50% of the total time cuz holy [ __ ] does he have so many [ __ ] The show became his show. It's so weird. >> Yeah. More so than it's a like a Daredevil. I mean, it's I don't know. I feel like that's a not even a surprising almost flanderization. It's like, yeah, man, it's Darevil and Fisk. It's like I mean, Daredevil's got other villains besides Fisk. Um, but yeah, whatever. Well, just think of how reserved Fisk's use in season one was by comparison. >> Well, I mean, you don't even you don't even see him until episode three. >> Yeah. I don't understand. >> I saw everyone posting the Fire Horse on Twitter. The show must be good. Yeah. And those same people don't won't be watching season two or three or whatever. >> Yeah. They won't. No. And then season 3, that'll be the end. And thankfully it'll be over and we'll never see the character again, which uh god, it's becoming increasingly common. Like, yeah, I don't need sequels, man. Like, >> dude, Arcane season 2. Oh, I still haven't gotten over that. >> What's so crazy, I've said this before and it does suck, is that uh had they not released a season 2, I would think about Arcane more. >> I don't think about it ever, um, which uh unfortunately I knew was going to happen. I knew it. I knew that would happen. But like the fact that there's more content and that releasing that more content made the the the current just less impactful. It's like it's the worst [ __ ] scenario. Cuz we've said before certain franchises this doesn't necessarily apply to, but >> like I just I can't deny reality on that one. Uh especially having recently rewatched it. I have not seen Luke Cage both seasons or Iron Fist both seasons cuz I did watch both of those since they came out. But the reality is is that it's it's what we've talked about. Bad then even 10 years ago uh is not the same as bad now. Mhm. >> Um, and I mean, Luke Cage had had its moments for sure. Um, I usually say that it it basically ended when Cotton Mouth was taken out of the storage about halfway through. Then it gets a lot dumber. But, um, yeah, I'd rank all three of those and, uh, better than Born Again. As for ranking them against each other, it's kind of no point in asking me that. Um, I don't care where where each of those words sort of slot against each other, but they're all better than Born Again, for sure. Like, for sure. even having not watched them for like 10 years. >> All right, then. Uh, also, why exactly are people praising Born Again as if it's better than Daredevil when it probably is worse than if and LC? So, that LC Luke Cage if Ironfist. >> Yeah. Well, cuz Iron Fist Iron Fist got criticized hard. >> The reason why is cuz it's Daredevil and it's it's Bisque and it's like like it takes a while for it to settle in for a lot of people, but it will settle in. it'll settle in as one of the worst things that ever happened. And all of those people saying it will be people who on the day said it was the greatest show like ever made and stuff. >> And so never listen to them again in terms of giving you advice on what shows to watch. >> They're the reason why it exists and why it's bad and why it didn't get cancelled after one season cuz they said that it improved >> when it didn't. >> This is almost nuts to talk about cuz this was a powerful bit of I was about to say nostalgia but just whatever you want to call it. They they had people by the balls with this. they they were going to be watching that first episode no matter what. >> They sure were. Yeah. >> Uh you know, people in our sort of sphere said they really even quite liked it, but have in retrospect been like, "Actually, yeah, that was awful." And it's like, yeah, they they they had that power. They could have made you basically people were going to like that first episode almost no matter what. >> Um >> pretty much, >> but eventually they would get it's like the TFA [ __ ] It really there should be a name for it. The TFA effect that we just keep referring to. >> There should be a name for it. But the thing is is that you know come on guys like let's like why what this keeps happening and it keeps perpetuating really bad like things uh in terms of media like constantly sort of getting these things wrong at the start. It's like well yeah that's that's like that's how they get a second and third. If everybody said dude all of that was bad including the corrective episodes we might we probably would have still had a season 2 but that might have been the end instead. Season 3 will be the end and they'll drag in more characters like Electra and ruin her, too. >> I mean, it does it just does take time for fans to car >> twig on, especially when fans are hopeful and we've got the whole thing of like it's better to be positive than negative [ __ ] that fans do. >> Uh, yes. [ __ ] it is probably the most useful phrase in the English language for getting anything done. >> Yes, exactly. I know so many people cuz I went to uni with a bunch of pretentious [ __ ] who really wanted to be writers. Um, but the problem they have was they really really wanted to be brilliant writers and they were so consumed with being brilliant that they couldn't get anything done. They never finished anything in the first drafts for 15 stories were just left untouched cuz they never never managed to get it to the end cuz they got like three or four pages maybe if they were good six chapters in and say no this isn't this isn't the sort of thing a brilliant writer would do and now I'm stuck and can't go continue it. You just have to lose all pretense and and any ego about it. If you're enjoying the story, tell it in a way that you find enjoyable. Um, and even if you get bored for a little period of time, just write and see what happens. Get past that scene until you find something fun to do again. You can always fix that in your second draft. Um, and even if you don't do that, you've learned a huge amount about the stamina and the psychology required to finish. So, [ __ ] it. Don't try and be perfectionist. Just write what's enjoyable to you and don't care about what anybody else thinks. At at the same time, it's like, well, you got you got to like make stuff. >> If you aspire to write the next great American novel and you never write anything, you've just wasted your life pretty much. So like you don't want to do that, okay? [laughter] You got to actually write stuff. [clears throat] And you have to balance it with a degree of selfrespect as well. So it's not like so [ __ ] it is about how you progress through stories. It's like significantly is the written quality as opposed to the quality of language used or how stylistically perfect it is. >> Um it's a really useful thing to do. Obviously if you have an ounce of self-respect, you never say [ __ ] it. Like in answer to the question, why is my main character doing this when in the last scene he did this? You don't say [ __ ] it about that cuz then you've broken the story. the story has to function. It's just about like getting rid of a bunch of pretense if you can. >> Mhm. >> Get get over yourself, but don't don't like give up on on yourself almost. >> And I've found a very reliable thing for any task that's coming across as daunting. Do everything you can to split up the task further. Smaller bitable things. So if you're like, "Oh man, I don't think I can write the whole book." It's like, "Yeah, okay, but like a chapter." Like, "No, I can't write a whole [ __ ] chapter." It's like, "Okay, page H I don't know if I could do a page like a paragraph, man. Just just just throw out a paragraph and then >> yeah, like >> yeah, just do a sentence and then and then of course even conceptualizing like think about more characters. Just do anything. Just add to it and then take your break if you need it and eventually you'll have something >> and try and do it as a routine as well. And like it also like find the right tool to do it with cuz it makes a huge difference. I cannot write with a pen. It's it's horrible. It's so slow. It gets painful after a time. Um, and I can't read it because my handwriting sucks. I can write really quickly on a computer, but actually you don't lo like I you lose track of that physical sense of uh achievement. You don't have a physical page there. There's just numbers in the bottom corner. And also, you can go so fast that you can lose yourself. Um, and you almost you don't give yourself time to think about what you're doing. It's about like finding the medium that you're most happy with. And I weirdly found that the typewriter was the best thing because it's like it's just fast enough that I don't get bored. Also, it gives me a physical piece of paper at the end which is like I have achieved something, but it also forces you to stop periodically to change ink and to change paper which is your time to stop and think. And so it's likely that just unlocked a whole bunch of stuff. >> Do you use a typewriter like now >> if I'm doing fiction? Yeah. Yeah. >> That's that is that is so very interesting. Um >> he's an interesting fellow >> because I uh I I've thought about that sometimes. I've entertained the thought. It's like, hm, would a typewriter >> make me feel more like a writer? [laughter] >> Yeah, something like that almost. Yeah, it feels so um I don't know cuz the aesthetic of it's I mean, maybe that's a bad way of thinking about it, but the aesthetic of a typewriter, it feels like there's something much more potent about that than uh than than writing on a laptop or something. Even though like at the end of the day, I mean it is it is the it is but but then maybe it's something like forcing forcing oneself to commit to putting something down on a page. Maybe there's some >> logic to that that implementing changes when you've t you've typed it out. It's not as easy. And so it's a lot it's maybe easier to get moving cuz you can't just get stuck on a particular paragraph. It's like well you got to put something down. That's an interesting thought honestly. I think. >> Well, what I find funny about cuz I I think I told you before I did I've done recording sessions before where I get drunk just to keep convince myself to keep going. So that that there was that and then the perfectionism and they said also about writing a first draft which I think we've kind of covered as well in that >> kind of covered just finish it finish it finish it just finish it you'll fix it later but that's you know that's just that's the that's a normal one cuz when you when you sort of you know working on like a problem in your head is not >> it's not actually that like great sometimes you know like it's actually better to cuz it's like you're dealing with an abstraction uh as opposed to well when it's finish, you've got very specific like sentences or, you know, structure things to look at that you can start changing and it's already there. So, you can just sort of build on top of it. So, yeah, just finish it. You just got to push yourself to finish it as fast as possible, ideally. >> And it helps if you've got an end scene in mind first. Like, I don't think I've ever written anything where I haven't in my mind got already the beginning, an idea about some bits in the middle, but mainly and the most importantly the end. Because then you know okay this is the scene to which everything is aiming. So everything I do even if I get lost has to be oriented in that direction. >> Agreed. I mean the ending is the ending of a story is often essentially the statement that the story is making. So it's kind of like the meaning and yeah if you know what the meaning of the story is even if that meaning changes to some extent as you're working on it you can at least orient yourself around that meaning as long as you know exactly what it is. Yeah. like starting without an end in mind is pretty I'd say this applies to like script writing for a video as well. >> Um like kind of like if you're making a video that's talking about like a specific thing. I think it usually helps if there's some broader point to it rather than just like analyzing it almost for the sake of analyzing it. Even though that can still yield some good things, but like if there's some sort of statement that's being made with the video, if you know what that statement is, that can help as sort of like a a north star that's relevant to Born Again. Um, you can [laughter] you can have that as like yeah a north star that helps sort of guide the whole the whole process. I think at least anyway. I think that helps. But it's it's not a surprise cuz he was a [ __ ] amazing actor anyway. >> And it was his idea apparently to um when he get you get to season 3 and they start doing all that sort of William Blake, God the Devil, the Great Red Dragon, it was Hannibal's apparently it was Maz Mickelson's idea that Hannibal Lectctor should he kind of is the devil in this universe and he should play him like Satan uh as opposed to like an Anthony Hopkins ripoff kind of version of the character. So like all the people involved were really really passionately interested in what they were doing and um because there's the line in it about he has no ethics, he has aesthetics and then by season 3 the entire show is just it's Hannibal's outlook and worldview is just in every aspect of the artistic production. It is entirely aesthetic. Um and you sort of clamor around looking for where morality is is left to be fine, but he doesn't have that. And so you were kind of put in this weird position where you're like, I really really enjoy him and you and everything in the show and the show itself is kind of so a marvel by the end, but I still kind of love it. And then you've got the entire friendly team and it's like who out of them has the capacity or the uh skill to be able to take him out and who would order it sort of thing. I was just listening to this and I was like you are not the generation that can claim that at all. What are you talking about? I was like getting like almost annoyed and it got even funnier cuz one of them was like yeah and that's the same for video games. You can imagine how I was just like, "What a fascinating conversation from random people right now." [laughter] And they were like, "Um, a lot of people these days are just playing absolute shit." And they were referencing loads of mobile games and just stuff that's like [ __ ] And one of them was like, "Yeah, we got to play Fortnite like when it was first coming out. We got to play Minecraft. Like holy [ __ ] Because obviously I feel like the uh the entire sort of portion of Millennial actually did go from more analog technology to everything becoming digital familiarity with all of the like manual uh engagement and and watching everything depreciate in a uniquely fast way. Um in terms of media, I guess. And then when it comes to games, I'm not citing [ __ ] Fortnite as the good times, like the original version. Like you crazy. He's going to be doing something efficient or crazy. Unfortunately, he did um poison himself, you know, when he fell over. But >> this stuff I like in Plurabus for sure.
