Video summary

Preparing for the UGC NET June 2026 exam requires a mindset that embraces anxiety as a natural response, similar to what top athletes experience before major matches, rather than viewing it as an obstacle to performance. Aspirants are encouraged to reframe the examination not as a make-or-break event but as another opportunity among many future attempts available in their career journey, which helps counteract panic-induced thoughts of being unprepared. It is important to accept that no candidate achieves perfection on D-Day and that even high-ranking individuals often regret missing certain topics; therefore, relying solely on feeling fully ready can be detrimental. Additionally, candidates should recognize the role of luck in examinations, where questions may come from unexpected areas or lucky guesses might occur, meaning there is little harm in attempting the test despite lingering doubts about one's readiness. In the days leading up to the exam and on the day itself, managing physical well-being and logistics is crucial for maintaining peak cognitive function. Candidates should prioritize getting seven hours of sleep, staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals instead of junk food that can cause digestive issues under stress, and avoiding social interactions with friends who might trigger negative comparisons or self-doubt about preparation levels. On the morning of the exam, it is essential to verify travel routes in advance for traffic conditions, wear comfortable clothing suitable for heat, avoid carrying expensive items that could be lost if lockers are unavailable, and arrive at least forty-five minutes early to settle in, listen to calming music, and address any immediate technical issues with the testing environment before other candidates do. Once inside the exam hall, effective strategy involves managing time strictly by aiming to solve easy questions within thirty minutes while acknowledging that paper difficulty can vary unpredictably for everyone. A recommended approach is to allocate specific slots: forty-five minutes for medium-difficulty sections like Reading Comprehension and Data Interpretation, followed by practical tasks, complex problems, and a final thirty-minute revision period to ensure all answers are recorded correctly without leaving any marked-for-review items unanswered. During this process, candidates should attempt questions one at a time starting with the easier ones before moving to difficult topics such as reasoning or mathematical logic, avoiding the temptation to calculate marks which wastes valuable time and leads to underestimating performance. If unfamiliar or tough questions appear, it is normal for up to twenty percent of the paper to be challenging, implying that all candidates face similar hurdles rather than indicating a personal failure. To maintain focus when overwhelmed by difficult content or overthinking, aspirants can employ grounding techniques like identifying five things seen, four touched, three heard, two smelled, and one tasted to instantly return attention to the present moment within seconds. Throughout the exam, it is vital to avoid starting lazily and instead maintain a steady pace using an available watch if permitted to track progress against the clock, ensuring that time does not run out on remaining questions later in the test. Before submitting answers during the final free period, candidates must carefully recheck their rough work for simple calculation errors like multiplication mistakes rather than overextending themselves in any single section. By adhering to these structured guidelines and maintaining a calm, strategic approach, aspirants can minimize silly mistakes and perform at their maximum capability on exam day.

What will my parents say now? Now I will not be able to clear it. Then what will happen? My friend will clear it. He will get a job. Extremely ecstatic on the day. That's why he is thinking that since he is feeling anxious right now, he should not go. Let Me Not Face the Battle. As big as we have made the exam in our minds, as important as studying is, consolidation is equally important. I think if there is anyone in the world who has the most stress, it would be those aspirants. Because your mind also knows that this is just a mock test and that is the main exam. Reach the exam hall at least 45 minutes to one hour before. If your confidence gets shaken somewhere, then at the last minute your mind will tell you very strongly that I am not prepared and I am not going to give the exam. If you are finding it tough, it means others must also be finding it tough. You will see that your entire world of overthinking comes to an end in a jiffy. There is another chance for you which you do n't get often in life. All the time we felt that if we failed in today's exam then our life would be over. Everything has gone black out. Everything is black, blank, nothing is getting recorded in my mind. Now I am not going or I am going to give the examination. Are you able to quickly gather 6 months of learning in 15 minutes? Do their best on the day of the exam. Hello everyone. Welcome to yet another episode of H Talks. Today we are going to discuss the exam day guidelines. What exactly are we going to follow during the D at the D day ah for the UGC NET exam? Today we have Dr. Arpita again with us and she is going to share some of the insights on what the students should be doing before the examinations. What are the do's and don'ts of the do's before the examination and on the day of the examination. So we will have that conversation with Dr. Arpita. Welcome to the show Dr. Arpita. Thank you so much. Thank you for joining us on this episode. Before I start ah my question to you is that not that the aspirants are ready to prepare for this examination and they are going to take this examination. The D Day is very near. What and they are very interesting. They are very overwhelmed. They must have spent a lot of hours preparing themselves. What are your advices to help them come down and not get panicky? What are your advices to the aspirants? Look, first of all I think it is very important to understand that there will be panic. Many times we have very high expectations from ourselves that we should not be stressed about the exam for which we have worked so hard. Even today I think in cricket, when Virat Kohli would be going inside the stadium to bat for the first time, it is the day of the World Cup final. No matter how many times he has faced the same kind of balls. It's very easy for him to feel that I might not get out. I should be able to contribute to the team. I should be able to do something for my country. And because of that, feeling a pressure is very natural. If people on levels kind of pressure it is very common and very natural for an aspirant to have it. But yes, at the same time as you mentioned that the ecstasy is so much that it might take a toll on your health. So it is also important to understand how we can reduce it. Its first step is that you accept that this is going to happen. Because half the time we are fighting with him as to how is this causing me stress. Yes, why is this happening? Why is it happening meaning? So as soon as you tell yourself this is natural. This is going to be what it is. We can't help it, as we are in Delhi, there is pollution now, whether you accept it or not. You keep worrying about why there is pollution? That will not do anything good. It is first important to take the responsibility and to understand that pollution exists. Now let me see what I can do in order to safe guard myself and how I can make sure that I do not contribute to further pollution. So similar thing we can do there. So first is accepting. Second I think the point here is that we have made the exam so big in our mind that this has become equivalent to you being successful in life. It is necessary for him to break that association once. It is variant. It is going to be a defining moment in your career. But it is still just an exam. And one very good thing about UGC NET is you get more chances. True! You will get it only after six months, but you will get it. So even if you make some mistakes this time, God forbid you are not able to clear it, still there is another chance for you which you do n't get much in life. So we have to be very happy and very you know content with the fact that we will have another attempt. So because of this, the pressure that you are feeling as an aspirant reduces, that you feel that I have to give my best, I definitely have to give it, but it is not make or break that if I don't do this then my life ends, then I am going to probably just go into depression or I might just lock myself in a room and I will be like that now I cannot do anything because after all it is just an exam. Many students in 10th standard who are now giving NET have faced 10th board exams, 12th board exams and college exams and if you remember, at all those times we felt that if I fail in today's paper then my life is over. But everyone's life is going on and it is going well. Life doesn't end at all. So I think this is an approach to start with that is very varied. Well said, well said. But we have generally seen this in most of the children, most of these students. During the preparation they have worked so hard day and night. For this examination. But what happens is that just a day before the examination or on the day of the examination, it feels as if everything has gone black. Everything is black, blank, nothing is getting recorded in my mind. I am not going or I am going to give the examination. And dropouts happen because of this also. Absolutely. What advice do you have for them? Again we start the discussion from there that going blank, these second thoughts come that tomorrow I will not give the paper because I am not fully prepared. Again, that is a very natural thing for your mind to say because your mind is trying to protect you. It doesn't want you to feel extremely passionate on the day. That's why he is thinking that since he is feeling anxious right now, he should not go. Let Me Not Face the Battle. So it's happening a little bit now, so I'll handle it. Why directly enter a big battlefield? Your brain is going to say that it is important for an aspirant to understand this. But here it is very important to tell yourself that never in your life will a time come when you will be fully prepared. It is an illusion in our mind that one day we will be fully prepared. No aspirant not even someone who is All India Rank 1 would say this out loud that I am fully prepared. I did not leave any topic. He also has a regret on exam day that I wish I had revised it more. I wish he had done 500 more PYQs. I wish I had done these two topics that I left out. I wish I had seen Mistake Notebook one more time. Because we are never satisfied. As humans, this is a tendency that we feel that a little is needed, that kind of thing works. [laughter] Right? So it is very natural for this thought to come in the mind of any student that I am not fully prepared. We have to tell ourselves that there is no harm in giving the exam. You have already filled the form. You have paid Rs 1000 as the admit card fee. Right? Right. You have already paid it. Now you go, you do not go , there is nothing that is going to be different that way. Correct. Even if you go with the thought that I am taking this as a mock exam. I will come after taking a look. Next time I will give it fully prepared. Because there will never come a day when you will know 150 out of 150. And many times it happens that luck favors you in such a way that most of the questions come from what you have read. I have seen many students who were very confident that yes, we have covered a lot. But at that time many such questions came which he had left and the topics came from there. So despite being prepared, he could not clear it and many times you come back from what you have studied or at that time many such things happen to you that you even make some guesses which turn out to be correct. They get it right. So we never know. Luck favors me. And that's why there's no harm in taking a chance. It is very important for you to tell yourself that only those 3 hours of my life will go. I don't have much loss because of that. Maybe I could have done something else in my life in those 3 hours. But apart from that, it is not that there is any particular number of attempts that you can give only three attempts. If you give one attempt now without being prepared, then you will be left with only two attempts later. It is not like that either. You have unlimited attempts. So there is nothing to lose. To be honest. And this thought is that I am going blank. This also comes to your mind because you have entered so much data in the last one month. It has not been completely consolidated. Not everyone went to their respective places. You just keep putting it in and the brain is processing it. It is just like when we make something in the kitchen, we put all the ingredients in it once and then it slowly takes the shape of the recipe. At one point you feel that the batter is ready. Now how will this make the final product? But if the batter is ready then when it goes into the oven the final product will also be ready. It takes a minute for that [sound of clearing throat] but you have just entered it now so you are not seeing it at all but whenever you sleep at night all that data is getting consolidated and on the day of the exam, whenever you need it, your brain is so capable as a machine that it is going to retrieve the data good so it is a good thing that there is no point in dropping out, it is a matter of 3 hours at least look at it like a mock test, you will understand, you will be able to overcome the challenge of facing the examination environment and at the same time also understand that who knows maybe your preparation might bear fruit that day, absolutely there is mental stress in children and during the preparation journey they also I have come across many a times where students have been saying that I am having a sleepless night ah I am not able to eat well I am not able to take care of my health. And we have also seen, read and heard such situations that there are students who have actually left themselves from maintaining a good diet and doing some good physical exercise and having sleepless nights? Right. How do they tackle? What would be your advice to these students? What should they be doing in the last three-four days and just before the examination day? So that they feel mentally and physically fit. Right? So that's where they are, they are absolutely on top of everything to go and in a very positive mood and give this examination. What's your advice to them? It is very important to understand that if you pay attention to two-three major parameters of your health in the last three-four days, what impact will it have? Because this happens to many students, they believe that if we sleep less, sleep only for three hours or we do not eat food, we do not take rest, then we will be able to do two extra chapters, correct, but the cost of those two extra chapters will be that you will go with a very exhausted mind and body on the day of the exam and whenever you do some questions, your brain will not support you at the speed that it can, consider it like this, how much work can you get done from a tired machine? That's correct. If I am not given rest to a machine, it can work only at 25% of its efficiency. And a well-rested machine will be able to do things very accurately and with a very high speed. So that is why do not try to study extra in the last three-four days. Because whatever has not been done in six months cannot be done in three months and three days by doing anything. True, we all know this. Even by doing a little extra, you won't get the edge you would if you just slept well. You take care of your diet. If you take some breaks, you will get it properly. And we've talked in previous podcasts about how important breaks are to recharge your brain. It's like how long can you run your phone on 1% battery. You will have to give it some time to get fully charged again. Then you can use it. Then its battery will be depleted. Then you charge it again. Our body is like the mechanism of the same phone. And here comes a very important thing, I think there are three things that students should do health wise in the last three to four days. Number one, don't compromise with sleep. At least seven hours of sleep is very important. And I'll Tell You Why? Because sleep helps your brain consolidate what you have read throughout the day. So, as important as reading is, consolidation is equally important. Otherwise all that data will get mixed and from that data, what we call as raw data, when that data gets processed then information is formed. You cannot do that processing. That happens only in sleep and that processing is very important because you are entering so much data that it is all jumbled up. When you sleep, your brain gets rest and your body is not doing any work, so all the processing is done by your brain while sitting and after that, when you wake up the next morning, you remember things better. You feel recharged. The second important thing is hydration is very important. Because if you do not stay hydrated, I have heard so many students suffer so much stress due to dehydration. I am vomiting. You are not feeling good from within. On the day of the exam, you suddenly start puking , vomiting, dehydration , loose motions. So many health issues can happen. It is important to prevent that. Because the preparation done for six months should not be ruined just because of a mistake of three days and it is very important to eat good food. Because obviously it is nutrition that is keeping your body healthy. This is a very small thing. Many times, after listening to the students, they wonder what kind of tip is this? But every small thing is also contributing. It's like what we say, from one pebble to the story of Thirsty Crow, even a small pebble played its role. So all these things are those little pebbles. So in the last three-four days, don't compromise with rest, don't compromise with hydration and good nutritious meals. Avoid eating any junk food that you feel your body might not be able to digest. So your health may deteriorate. During this time, another thing comes to the fore which I have again encountered many times. Students they keep on calling up to their friends and meeting that. Well, how was your preparation? How are your preparations going? This is not my topic. Wood and Then What Happens? The more they communicate with their friends and colleagues, they start self-doubting, oh friend, he even covered that topic, I did n't even cover it, is it advisable that at this time children should talk more to friends, especially related to this exam, or they should cut off two-three days to spend it on themselves, give space and time to yourself and do whatever you want to make yourself happy. What is your advice on this? This advice I think every student should ask themselves. First of all we should ask him that if I am talking to my friend, what is the benefit of it? Because right now you are not at all ready to put yourself in a negative environment in any way. Because if your confidence gets shaken somewhere, then at the last minute your mind will stingily tell you that I am not prepared and I am not going to give the exam. And it is very difficult to control yourself at that time. Because you will get stressed and your body will take decisions. It may be three days later when your paper date has passed. You realized that you should have given it to me. But till then it is the same. The night passed and the matter ended when the train left. The car has gone. What will happen if you regret now ? So if every student asks himself this question that even if I ask my friend what all he has studied and if he tells me 10 topics which he has studied and I have not studied, will I be able to study them in three days? If he has read it in six months then I cannot read it in three days. And if he tells you something that makes you doubt yourself, then do you know how to heal that doubt on your own and [nasal voice] when most of the students will have this conversation with themselves, then they will come to know that they are not ready for this because none of us are super humans in a way that if someone tells us directly what is lacking in our preparation, then we can proudly stand in front of him and say that no no I am well prepared, that is just your judgment, you are not truly right on those lines. So that is why cutting off as you said, I think that is a same decision to make because there is no chance of you getting anything positive from anywhere. There is a good scope of being negative. There are chances. And if you isolate yourself for three-four days and spend time revising your notes , solving PYQs, and doing mock tests. Plus I always tell students that it's time. When you practice some self-awareness, practice meditation. Because now that time is gone when you can prepare by doing a lot. Now you have to strengthen your mental game. Whenever you see me giving an analogy of cricket, it's always because I think cricket is such a widely popular sport that everybody can relate to it. So it 's a part of our religion. It is a part of our religion to be honest. So in cricket also you will see that whenever there is a World Cup or some such very important match. So Virat Kohli or Bumrah do not sit and practice an hour or two before. Because they feel that whatever we did throughout the year was enough and now nothing will happen by practicing two more balls. In that one or two hours, their coach or their team captain just tries to develop the mindset with them as to what strategy we should adopt and what if things do not happen as planned. So what are plan B and plan C that if we think we will score so many runs by batting and if we are not able to do so because the pitch is not favourable and maybe their bowling side is very very very strong. So in that case what is the other option and in that way they create their mindset so that when they go to the match, their mindset is ready and the preparation is ready for the whole year. So, as I always say for NET, your knowledge and your mental preparation are two different skills. But both of them together complete the preparation for NET. So your preparation should be good. Mentally he should be good. Makeup and thirdly your question attempting skills. That's why PYQs are very important because of how you are attempting the questions. That is another skill that you have to learn. Right, right? Good. So I think I think very correctly said how children should manage their time in three-four days. One should be mentally strong. One should look at the positive sides. Do What Makes Them Happy and Don't Look Out for Anything New. What you have done, you have done enough. Be positive and be confident about it. Let's walk into the D Day. On D Day, I think if there is anyone in the world who has the most stress, it would be the aspirants. Absolutely. We have sailed through those slides. Absolutely. There are so many things in it that because of the stress, because of a lot of us are so overwhelmed. That there are many very basic things which we forget to do. Yes. So at this time, when you wake up in the morning on D Day, what advice will you give to the child that yes, now you are going towards the centre? What are these essential things which are there and you should do it and these are the things which you should completely ignore on that particular day, from D day I will say your D day preparation will start a day before. So [nasal sound] because some things will slip out of your hands on D Day. For example, if you have not seen your centre. Now on D Day, yes on D Day when you go to find the centre, recently a very popular series had come, I think there was a series called Kota Factory, in that series it has been shown that their main lead character, the protagonist, is fully prepared but has not seen the centre and he reaches the wrong centre and then he has to rush to the right centre and reaches late and the teachers of their coaching institute, they all are very hopeful that this candidate will definitely get a rank in life. But just because of that one mistake he panics so much that when he sits down he is not able to perform and he doesn't clear and a lot of other friends who were less prepared they are able to clear. So these few things tell you that very small mistakes sometimes prove to be very costly in life. So a day before is very important. You download your admit card. You should have a physical print of it. If your centre is very far from you. You have never seen that area. Go and check it once. See, yes, because you will get to know the panic time for the next day, you will also get to know the traffic, you will also get an idea about how much time in advance you will have to leave, many times it happens that there are names of two similar colleges, if you go there and ask once, then you will come to know that the college you are thinking of is not that college, it is some other college because very similar incidents have happened with many of my students. That's why from that experience I am able to say this. So that is very important. That your Aadhar card should be ready, your U NOW admit card should be ready, you should have seen the centre, you have to do all this in advance. Now when it is the day of the exam, when you wake up early in the morning , then on that day I would always suggest that you should not study anything now. Because whatever you read has the chance of taking you into a panicky state. Revies. No last minute. Because that is what I think that is panicky revision. That is not last minute revision. It's always a panicky review. That you are gathering the month's studies very quickly in 15 minutes and your brain is automatically getting over stimulated at that time. So you wake up comfortably that day. Whatever your morning routine is, get ready etc. Wear comfortable clothes. I have seen many students, it is summer time now. You did small things due to which you are feeling uncomfortable in the exam. Suddenly your clothes are pricking you or something like that is happening. You are feeling very hot. Because you never know what all facilities will be there in your exam centre. In many places even the fans are not working. So wear very comfortable clothes because you are not going to any fashion show. While giving the exam, your entire body should not bother you at all because your entire focus should be on each and every question. Do not carry any expensive items with you. In many places in the exam halls you get locker facility that you have a guard room type. You can make a deposit there. Not available in many places. And if you are going by cab and no one from your family is with you, then where do you leave those expensive things? You may panic about that too in the end. And these are such things that because of this we can save ourselves from all the mishaps that can happen because it is already a stressful environment. Let us not add two more stressors from our side. So after doing all these things, we will reach the exam hall in at least 45 minutes to 1 hour. You will not be able to do anything new by staying at home, which you will do after going there. Chill there comfortably for an hour, listen to good songs, do whatever you can do to keep yourself relaxed and positive. I would always suggest that as soon as the gate entry opens, you should go inside first because it takes time for you to find the class and see the name on the board. Many times I have heard this from students because it is a computer based test. Your mouse doesn't move. Many times your screen keeps flickering again and again. Meaning because of the loose connection. So you can immediately tell your invigilator there that I need a different mouse. I need a different table. If your table is wobbling because this is very common in India. So many schools or equipments and these small things like if your mouse is not working then your 20-30 minutes will be wasted in the entire exam just by clicking the mouse four times to set that pad so that you can reach the answer. Why do you need all of the things, so it is better that you have seen all that, now you are sitting comfortably in your centre, even if your 20 minutes are being wasted then it is no problem, thank you very much, very very informative things, many children fumble in this. And these small little things actually help and make a lot of difference. Now the children have arrived and reached the examination hall and after that everything is ready. Now the exam has started. Now, as soon as the exams start, such situations arise that children start seeing unfamiliar questions. Hey friend, this is out of the syllabus. I had not prepared this at all. Now all that ashness becomes double , triple. What should children do in that situation? If we encounter this kind of thing, face it, then what should they be doing? A lot of things can be done in it. And I think every student should give mock tests when they give it, as I always say, give some mock tests before the exam. Try to simulate a similar environment. Create a similar environment in your study room. Sit for three hours, set a timer, and then see what things are happening to you during those three hours. Why should you panic because there will be three times more than that in the exam centre. Because your mind also knows that this is just a mock test and that is the main exam. So if you come to know about all those things then you should not do those things on D Day. But if I talk about one common thing that you can do, then number one, as soon as you see an unfamiliar question or a complex question, first of all tell yourself that I will see 20% such questions. This is very normal, very natural. The cut off has never gone above 70-80% in the history of UGC NET till date. That means every year no one is able to attempt 20% of the questions. Otherwise the cut off could have been 96% also. So if no one is able to do it then you are not a wonder. If you are also a child of this planet then you too will not be able to do it. So let us admit that maybe [nasal sound] you might see more than 20. So you also have to keep this thing in mind that if the paper is tougher than it usually is, then the cut off will drop. Too tough paper does not mean you will not be able to clear it. That means if the cut off drops then you will also be able to clear within the lower cut off. Yes. So it is very important to understand this. Many times students correlate this to the fact that I am finding the paper very tough. That means now my paper will not be cleared but others' will be. If you are feeling tough and you have prepared well then you should know this from within. If you are finding it tough, it means others must also be finding it tough. So overall the paper is made tough. So if the cut off used to be 70, now it will be only 55. So you will comfortably qualify at 55. Naturally. Apart from this, some other things can be done at that time. For example, I always say that there is provision for hydration in every exam centre. In many places you are not allowed to carry bottles. Keep drinking water from water bottles in between. Not too much either. But if we take a few sips in between. So if I talk about H2O a little scientifically. So H2O is made up of molecules of oxygen and hydrogen. So as soon as oxygen enters your body, due to our panic our breathing rate gets disturbed a little. And everything is being regulated through breathing. So when you take H2O as in water, you get extra oxygen. Because of that your body automatically works on itself. Because it is very important to get the work done. I think in those 3 hours your only job should be to keep yourself in a working state because after that your mind knows what to do. Your brain is simply not capable of doing this on its own. That's where you need extra efforts. One very interesting thing I have seen working with many students. That is a technique which is known as five four three to one. It is a technique which is mostly prescribed by psychologists to people who have panic attacks and anxiety related issues. So it's a very simple grounding technique. That will bring you to the present. As soon as your mind goes into panic mode, goes into overthinking mode, suddenly it feels like you have seen a question which is not getting solved and the child feels like what will my parents say now? Now I will not be able to clear it. Then what will happen? My friend will clear it and will get a job. And you don't even know it. The one that stream of consciousness runs in your mind. According to you, she completely destroys your world in 3 minutes. You just think this is the end of the world. Now it means that in a way, a catastrophe has come into your world. Because by overthinking he created all the negative scenarios that could happen in your life. Just After Looking at One Difficult Question. There it is very important that you ground yourself back that whatever happens, you cannot change it. All we have to do now is look at each question one by one and give our best and attempt. So this grounding technique says that as soon as you get panicky, you should look at five things around you. Ah. Maybe computer screen near you. Five Things You Can See. Four Things You Can Touch. Quickly feel your clothes, hands, table, mouse, try to feel any four objects that you can touch. Three Things That You Can Hear. There are so many sounds. Fan is running, birds chirping, traffic, someone saying something whispering, maybe AC is running so the sound of AC fan. So just listen to any three sounds consciously. You don't have to evaluate. Just take your mind to three things that you can hear. Right. Then Two Things That You Can Smell. Smell. And One Thing That You Can Touch. May be you can not sorry taste. So there could not be anything that you can test but you can test your own saliva. Right? So, you do that test. As soon as you do this , this entire thing takes about 30 to 45 seconds. You will see that your entire world of overthinking, which had been created, ends in a jiffy. Good. Because you immediately brought yourself back to reality. As soon as you observed all the things in the present. You are immediately in the present. And now tell yourself that let me just look at one question. I don't know what questions are next. What I have solved in the past is right or wrong. I am doing question number seven. [nasal sound] I need to concentrate on question number seven for 30 seconds, 45 seconds. I don't care what is happening in the rest of the world. What a great advice. What a great advice. I am sure this is going to be very useful for the aspirants and they may have to do this 10 to 15 times in the entire exam. Because whenever you face this situation again and again. Will come. Again and again, your mind will suddenly start feeling threatened that those students who have not disassociated the exam from their life will feel that they cannot clear this exam. He will feel a direct threat to his life that now his world is about to end. And this is very psychological. It is not very easy to break it. Because there are many students who come from financially weak backgrounds. They know that my family depends on my job. So for that person it is very easy to feel that if I don't get if I don't clear this exam I am not going to get a job and then how do I, how am I going to manage yes manage my finances. I have so many people to take care of. I am the bread owner of the family. So it's very easy to have it. And at that very moment, you ground yourself and tell yourself that whatever happens, I am still doing it in life. Right now I have to see question number seven only. Right? There is that dialogue of Shahrukh Khan in Ek Chakde, you have 90 minutes. So here you have 180 minutes, 180 yes, you are the king of 180 minutes and this is what you have to look at. I just think well, very well said. There are some other techniques also. You have told a very good technique of bringing reality closer to you and then facing it rather than getting into an overthinking zone. In 3 hours, just keep yourself composed and keep your energy balanced. This is a very difficult task. We as human beings have a tendency of going wired everywhere. Right? Because our mind works in that way. How do you what do you suggest and rather? How does the aspirant actually try to compose themselves for these three hours which is the hour of their life so called very important point in their life. So what are your advices to keep themselves composed apart from what you rightly suggested to sort of tone down their overthinking. Right? I think, first of all, if the student knows with what strategy he has to give the paper in 3 hours. Yes, he gives the paper with his own strategy. Many students are also very worried because they have not given mock tests etc. before and they are giving computer based test for the first time. Because a lot of students are not well versed with computers. They do not know where the options will come, where the submit button will come, how the question will come. Where can I see the options? Sometimes if a question is long then you will have to scroll down to see the options. A lot of people are not familiar with all these things. That is why it is important to give mock test first. All the students who are listening to this podcast two-three days before the exam. I would really advise you to give mock tests in both our courseware book PYQ book and online CBT mode so that you can at least once become familiar with the setup. One very important thing is that in both the books, I have given some articles in the beginning of prelims about what is the pattern of the exam ? When you go to the exam, what things should you keep in mind while attempting the exam? What mistakes do students commonly make? What things do toppers do in order to get an extra edge on the day of the exam. So definitely read those articles. Whoever has these books, make sure you spend at least two hours before the exam reading those exams because that will save you from those silly mistakes that you might make. Right right. Along with this, one very important thing which I think works a lot with the students is that whenever you are giving the exam, when you see the questions, then first of all keep the strategy of one question at a time. Forget about the back and forth. And when you are feeling panicky, do some deep breathing at that time. Deep breathing brings your mind back to the present. Your nervousness relaxes and you are able to handle the questions better. And as we talked about in the last podcast as well. Easy questions have to be done first. Then medium difficulty, then we have to take those questions which are from practical unit. Data Interpretation, Mathematical, Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and lastly we will move towards complex questions so that our confidence increases gradually and not decreases. As soon as we take the complex questions first, our confidence graph will go down. Yes. Good good advice and I am sure again very very insightful. A many times because UGC we know that this is paper one and then paper two. Now what happens is that when a child gives Paper One first, he starts analyzing it and then realizes that I am not able to qualify in this, so I should not give Paper Two. They start creating some sort of dilemma and confusion in their mind. Is this advisable for the students to actually do calculation of marks after giving the examination and just ignore it and focus on paper to what are your feelings about it I think 100% you should never calculate marks during the exam because again we should ask ourselves what will be the benefit? Now it is supposed to happen. Now, according to me, even if I get 10 out of 50 questions correct, I cannot change anything. Correct. If there was a possibility that I could get 25 correct instead of 10, I would have done it in the first place. Because it is not that I have gained more knowledge after 5 minutes. I had the same knowledge 10 minutes back. So using the same brain I did what I could with the knowledge that I had. So it is very important to ensure that we do not try to find out from anywhere how many questions we got right and how many questions we got wrong. Because because of that your time will be wasted. You spent 10 minutes doing the calculations. Instead of that, you could have concentrated more on two questions. And number two it might backfire. Because you might feel that while giving the paper you were feeling that you are easily doing 60-70% correct and when you did the calculations and we always underestimate ourselves a little. We have this tendency that we will overestimate the other person and underestimate ourselves. And as soon as we underestimate, even if we are getting 50 questions right, then according to our calculations we will conclude that 30 were correct, then you immediately feel that you are not going to clear the cut off. So it is always good that in 3 hours your only target should be that I have to concentrate with all my heart on only 150 questions. Now what went right in these and what did not go right. I have a full day after the exam hall. I will sit at home the whole day and check which questions I got right. I might also get into a guilt trip where I tell myself that I knew the first option was not the second option, we will do all that later. I give you full freedom to do that for five days, 10 days. Even that is not advisable because it is the same thing that if the car is gone then what is the use of cursing oneself now ? And within these 3 hours, we must make a commitment to ourselves. When you sit in the exam hall, as soon as you sit, make an intention that I have to focus only on 150 questions in 3 hours and that too not all at once, one question at a time. Now if question five is in front of me, I will solve only question five, I will not look ahead or behind, as soon as I reach question six, I forget what I did in question five, that does not matter to me, now only question number six and my entire concentration will be only in understanding question six, using my knowledge, using elimination techniques , finding keywords. And I'm going to solve it. Because the focus of your mind is such that I remember a very good analogy that even the sun rays, if seen in a natural way, are spread all over the earth. But when you take a magnifying glass and focus it on a page. It Can Burn the Page. That race is so powerful. But because it is spread out, nothing like that is happening. But as soon as you focus it at one place, its energy becomes so high. Similarly, if you focus your entire mind in just one direction, I have to do question number five. I am not thinking about anything else. Nor do I remember anything about my preparation. Now what will happen to me in life ? With me, I remember what I did, I only remember the questions. If you do this, your brain will work with full energy and you will see that many such questions which you could have done wrong, you will get them right just because your brain is working at its maximum capacity. I think you've also covered this in the previous ah podcast time management, elimination techniques, and keywords, all of those things can really help in focusing on your answering the questions. I think all these strategies are very useful. I am sure these aspirants are going to love this and they are going to use it for their examination. A final advice and what would you like to say to the aspirants? I would just tell them to make sure that you keep yourself busy within those three hours. Number one thing that many aspirants miss out on, which I have seen that happens with many students who are not able to clear NET by one or two marks, is that many students make this mistake that they often spend too much time on any question. That is why it is very important that when you sit in the exam hall, you must check this at that time. You have already come 15-20 minutes ago. You check whether you can see the watch or not. Because sometimes watches are not available in some classes. And you have this right that you can tell the invigilator to please make provision for a watch. And it makes it easier for you to keep track of how much paper you are doing in how much time. Because as soon as you mismatch the time, then it will not be in your hands to not panic because if I have to do 50 questions in half an hour, then any person in the world, even if I bring a Buddhist monk, then perhaps he too will panic because you are running against time. You have to solve 50 questions in 30 minutes. You have less than 30 seconds to attempt a question. True. So it is very easy for you to panic. So it is very important for students to have good time management from the beginning. You should not start the paper with a very lazy attitude in the beginning. Many times the student feels that he is doing it leisurely. Then after an hour he thinks, oh I have done only 10 questions. And then he increases his speed and in the process of increasing the speed he makes mistakes. Silly mistakes happen. So from the beginning you should keep an eye on a clock. You have to solve easy questions in 30 minutes. 510 minutes of ups and downs, that is normal. We cannot predict the paper. So we cannot say that it will happen in this much time only. But overall time frame is that's why we have last half an hour as I told you that 30 minutes easy questions. 45 minutes for medium difficulty. 45 minutes for practical questions. RC, DI Mathematical Logical Reasoning. 30 minutes for complex and last 30 minutes for revision. If we go ahead then we will make deductions because in revision anyway you do not have to change some solutions in revision. All you have to do is make sure that you have attempted all the questions. Any question you have submitted should be there. It is not that you have left it after marking it for review. Because many times when you do not mark, its answer does not count. So you have to check these small mistakes in the end. Calculation Error You have to go back once you have done the rough work because you get rough pages. So you check the rough work once again, sometimes we make normal simple multiplication errors. Then when we have free time at the end and the entire paper is over, we should check the calculations once to ensure that we do not make any error in the calculations. So we see all these things and even if we do not see these for once, even then there is nothing to lose, but if you have done the rest of the things well, then I would definitely like to give this one final advice that keep track of the time, do not go overboard with any of these slots that I have mentioned. Your blessings to your rest to the aspirants. [laughs] I would definitely pray for them and I would really want them to do their best on the day of the exam. And I wish all of them. Ah best of luck from the core of my heart. And I wish that they all perform to their maximum capability and they should shine in the exam. Thank you so much doctor. Thank you so much. Always a pleasure talking to you and I am sure you. The aspirants out there would find it very useful for this examination. Wish you all the best for the upcoming exams. Thank you very much. Thank you.
