Video summary

The upcoming US Open presents significant challenges for several top-ranked players as they face the prospect of losing substantial ranking points, particularly on the men's side where defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic stand to lose 800 points each from their semi-final appearances last year. While Alcaraz is unlikely to drop out of the top three even if he loses all those points due to his lead over Jannik Sinner, the situation is more precarious for Djokoviq and Aryna Sabalenka on the women's side. Sabalenka, currently holding the world number one spot as the defending champion, has 2,000 points at risk, but she also faces pressure to maintain her top ten position if her performance falters. Similarly, Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka could find themselves slipping toward the bottom of the top ten if they do not perform well in this tournament, given that there are only about 1,200 points separating the fourth and tenth positions. On the women's side, the race for the world number one ranking is heavily influenced by Rebecca Sramova's performance, who holds a distinct advantage over her rivals. If Sramova reaches the semi-finals, she will secure the number one spot regardless of whether Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, or Jessica Pegula win the tournament. However, if Sramova fails to advance that far, the title will go to whichever of the other three players wins the event, meaning they must not only perform well but also hope for Sramova to lose before the semi-finals. Other contenders like Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys have significant upside potential; Rybakina, who had a career-best season, and Keys, who lost in the first round last year, could easily climb into the top ten if they achieve deep runs in this Grand Slam. The men's landscape also offers opportunities for players to gain ground, with Jannik Sinner positioned to close the gap on Alcaraz if he wins the title as the number one seed. Additionally, players like Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz have massive opportunities to enter or re-enter the top ten; Zverev lost in the first round last year while currently ranked eighth, and Fritz, who missed playing last year, could push back toward the top five with a strong showing. The tournament is described as wide open on both sides, with no clear favorite for the men's title due to Sinner's potential absence or form issues, and anyone from the top twenty potentially capable of winning on the women's side, making the ranking implications particularly unpredictable and exciting for fans watching the competition unfold over the next few weeks.

We've got the US Open starting in about 24 hours time. And we should talk about the rankings because not only is there a lot of ranking points to lose on the men's side. On the women's side, there is a lot of things to talk about when it comes to who's going to be world number one cuz there's a lot of possibilities. So, let's go have a look at who has the most to lose and gain and then we'll talk about what the women's game is going to look like and who needs to do what to get to number one. All right, let's start on the ladies side with the most to lose. So, starting with Sabalanka, of course, she's world number one and she was the defending champion, so she has 2,000 points to lose. And Nissamova, who's number 10 in the world, has the final from last year, which is,300 points. For Gula, who's number three, has the semi-final with 780 points, and so does Osaka, who made the semis last year. So yeah, Sabang is the big one. But also in Sam over, she could lose her top 10 spot if she doesn't do well here. You know, she might have to make the semis to kind of stay in the top 10, which is a little bit concerning. Over on the most points to gain, you have Noska who made the third round last year. She has a lot of upside if she does have a bit of a run here. Yala, she only made the second round last year and of course she's having a career best season this year. So her possibility of getting close to the top 10 is high. Spedilina, she's number nine in the world. She only lost in the first round last year. So she has so much upside. And on Draver as well, she lost in the third round kind of like Noska. So again, a lot of upside there. On the men's side of things, we got Alcarz. He obviously defending champion. There's a lot of points to lose, but I think even if he loses all those points, it's very unlikely he drops out of the top three. Yanick SA, he will stay number one because he's so far ahead of Zerv at number two. But a lot of points to lose there from the final. And then Oalia at four and Jookovic at five both making the semi-finals with 800 points last year. So yeah, it's a bit more concerning for them because between like four and 10, there's only about 1,200 points between them. So both Jovovic and Oel Seam could be dropping down towards the bottom of the top 10 if things don't go well here. Over on the other side of things, you got Ver at number two, who made the third round last year. And we know that, you know, being the number one seed this year and one of the favorites, he could really gain some points on Sinner at number one if he does go on to win the title. You got Mevadev who lost in the first round last year. He's at number eight currently. Has no points to defend at all really. Feast didn't play last year. So to get into the top 10, here's a massive opportunity. The way that he's been playing, he should gain a lot of points if he does, you know, sort of make the quarterfinals, which wouldn't be a surprise here. And this Shutton's the same thing. you know, he has a lot of points to gain. He only made the third round last year and at number nine, he can sort of push back towards that top five. All right, let's talk about the situation with the top four players trying to be world number one. So, you've got Sabalanka, Goff, Pagoula all trying to be number one at the end of this tournament and trying to catch Rebecca. So, this is the way this this is going to work. So, it's pretty simple. If Rebecca makes the semi-finals, she will be world number one. It doesn't matter if Sabalanka, Goff, or Pagoula win the whole thing. If Rebecca doesn't make the semis, then whoever wins out of those three players will become world number one. So if Pagoula wins and Rebecca lost in the quarterfinals, Pagoula would be number one. Same with Goff and same with Zabalanka. So Rebecca is in the box seat to be world number one by the end of this tournament. She doesn't have to do as much as the others. The other have to win and that's only half the picture because they also have to hope that Rebecca loses before the semis. So there you have it. It's a lot to go through on the ranking side of things. There's obviously a lot of points on the line and last year I mean there's a lot of players that are sort of in that top three, top four or even top five with the men that have a lot to play for this week and and the next two weeks. They really need to do well and we know that it's kind of wide open on both sides of things because you know no sinner means that you know the men's side of things is kind of a little bit more open. On the women's side there's you know anyone from like 1 to 20 could win this tournament. So yeah, it's going to be really interesting to see. Let me know in the comments below though who will be world number one after this tournament. Will it be Goff? Will it be Pagula, Sabalanka or Rebecca? because I don't know if we've ever come into a grand slam, at least not recently, where four players could be number one in the world and uh you know if they if they win or if uh if they do some some stuff. So yeah, we've had like a twoerson race uh at at you know or even a three person over the last you know few years but yeah four people four people it's crazy but there it is. That's the rankings and what's on the line over the next couple weeks.
