Dive into Science with 15x4 Munich Podcast: Episode#2 Trust in the Digital Age with Nicole Lontzek
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The human tendency to establish habits serves as a fundamental mechanism that allows individuals to feel comfortable within their environment and understand their place in the world. Because people rely on these established routines for security, they naturally become skeptical and cautious when encountering new things, often feeling frightened by unfamiliar changes. This inherent resistance means that introducing novel concepts, particularly complex technologies, requires careful consideration of how best to overcome this initial fear without causing significant disruption or confusion.
To effectively introduce something new, especially in the realm of technology, it is most effective to combine the innovation with elements that are already familiar to the audience. By anchoring a new idea to an existing concept, individuals do not have to make massive adjustments to their mental models; instead, they only need to navigate small shifts while retaining the comfort of what they know. This strategy leverages pre-existing knowledge as a bridge, making the transition from the old to the new much smoother and less intimidating for those who might otherwise be hesitant about adopting fresh methods or tools.
For instance, when rolling out new software, one should identify specific aspects that users already recognize and integrate them into the design of the application. This approach ensures that the learning curve is minimized because users can rely on their prior experiences to navigate the unfamiliar parts of the system. Ultimately, success in adopting digital innovations depends not just on the quality of the technology itself, but on how well it respects human psychology by building upon rather than ignoring our deep-seated need for familiarity and routine.

people tend to establish habits
so um so that they can feel comfortable
in their environment
and um this is how they know
their place in the world yeah and if new
things occur people tend to be skeptical
and
careful at first and
new things are very much frightened for
the most of us
so the easiest way to introduce
something new
especially technology for example is
to combine it with something familiar so
um in this way people don't have to make
these huge dress loops but small ones
so for example if you want to introduce
like i said a new software
find an aspect which is already familiar
